Date: June 15 Time: 12:30 His name was Paul Robertson. He was an average human male with one wife and two children. Twin daughters. Went to church every Sunday and paid his tithes. What set him apart was that he was independently wealthy from the trust fund he had inherited and several wise investment choices. To the naked eye he was a clean man with a spotless record and impeccable sense of charity. The truth was he was a huge contributor to the Friends of Humanity and the Purity Movement. Paul Robertson was a staunch mutant hater and Rogue wanted to break him down. It had seemed that the Brotherhood had been especially violent lately. There were more murders and assassinations. With members of various cells experiencing strange episodes of memory loss and irrational outbursts things had taken a slide in the negative direction as well. Rogue wanted a mission that could prove their point but at the same time not seem like an outright act of violence. She wanted to ruin Paul Robertson’s life, career and livelihood. If they could put him in some sort of legal trouble it would be possible for the authorities to freeze his assets and shut off some of the funding for the anti-mutant groups. The problem was that most avenues that the Brotherhood had used led to absolutely nothing. Rogue took it upon herself to get up close and personal. She would find out his dirty little secrets directly from the source. The striped mutant was in a disguise. It wasn’t much of a disguise. She just tried to look as casual and discrete as possible. She wore jeans and a light long sleeved shirt. A baseball cap sat atop her head to help hide her distinctive white streak. It was a Yankee’s cap. Rogue didn’t care for the team but how many young women were there in the city with a Yankee’s cap? They had tracked Mr. Robertson’s routine for a week. Everyday he would head out of the office with a couple of colleagues for lunch a few blocks away. The plan was simple. Rogue would stroll in the opposite direction and give the bigot a little touch and download as many memories as possible and find the dirt they were looking for. The Southern belle checked her watch. It was time to get the plan in motion. Rogue stepped from the doorway of a small boutique and fell into the crowd. She trained her eyes forward, trying to look casual. Ahead she could see Paul. He was talking with his colleagues and laughing. He may not have been directly responsible for crimes against mutants but he was just as culpable through his funding, she knew it. Her bare fingers itched inside the pocket of her shirt. All it would take would be one touch and that slimeball would be swimming around in her head. He kept laughing as they approached each other. Rogue pulled her hand from the pocket and kept it curled against her thigh. Paul was within three feet. His bare arm was exposed. Rogue angled slightly and dragged her fingertips across the man’s forearm. At the moment of contact Paul stumbled and his friend put a hand on the shoulder. Rogue walked along mechanically as she felt the added presence in her mind. Paul didn’t have a particularly strong personality and it was easier than most for Rogue to push into the background. His memories were falling into place. The more recent events were freshest but she dug into his past. There she found the sins that he had worked so well to hide. Unfortunately, Paul couldn’t hide from himself and he was inside Rogue’s head at that moment. Got you, you bastard, she thought. Rogue stepped onto a side street. She pulled a pack of gum from her pocket and held it closer to her mouth. The cellophane wrapper concealed a radio transmitter that had been designed for discretion. “Ah’m ready, Sugah. Beam me up,” she said to Ariel who was on the other end of the transmission. Rogue kept her eye on the door farther down the narrow street. It was the position they had agreed on for the teleportation. Soon enough, they would be planning the ruin of Paul Robertson. |

"Okay seriously there is no way you could have liked that movie. I'm sorry but no. I'm actually a little offended, yes there I said it I'm offended. I fully intend to write and demand my twelve dollars back." Kitty adjusted the strap on her over sized purse as she and Doug emerged from the darkened theater into the light of a hot New York day. She considered herself no great movie critic, but she knew a bad movie when she saw one and "The Last Airbender" was most definitely a bad movie It had been his call though she wouldn't be telling the truth if she said she hadn't been a bit curious to see it as well. It was the pull of the sci-fi and the bitter sting of disappointment that few times did expectations ever live up to what was presented as actual product. Doug answered her back in typical Doug non-committals, pointing out things like the cinematography or the action scenes, but that was how Doug was. He never wanted a bad experience, even disappointments could be polished up into meaningful events if he just tried hard enough. It was one of the things she loved best about her sandy-haired Cypher, he really was too much a sweetheart for his own good. "And correct me if I'm wrong.. No, lets walk a bit we'll catch a taxi at the next corner. I really want to stop by that espresso place down on third, they make the BEST lattes, but what was I saying oh yeah okay so I'm no lover of the cartoon series but like isn't all the cast supposed to be Asian. Why were they all played by white actors. No, Doug. I'm telling you that was the final straw i have OFFICIALLY worked off my punishment for making you sit through 'The Bounty Hunter'. We are even stevens buddy, even stevens." She fiddled in her purse for a moment searching for her shades as Doug continued on, acknowledging the merits of her opinions but still not willing to relinquish his stance that the movie wasn't that bad that they both had in fact seen worse. "Yes, but that doesn't make it any better. This isn't a by comparison argument Doug you can paint it with any brush stroke you like but that was one shi..." The dark haired girl walking looked so familiar. Kitty knew she knew her from somewhere, and then as she watched the girl's smooth gesture, the "accidental" touching of the man she passed by, his subsequent weakening as though he'd been sucker punched, it dawned on her. The dark haired girl with the flashy white highlighted streak in her hair was no everyday New Yorker, she was one of Magneto's followers and most definitely bad news. She grabbed Doug by his wrist and darted after Rogue stopping to check on the weakened man. Rogue had done something to him. What was her powers again? Damn-it she knew this it was some touch based thing, she had seen it in the files they all saw on the Brotherhood. Touch based absorption if she had to bet money on it, though why Rogue would be targeting this Joe Nobody in the middle of the day was a complete surprise to the young phaser. Unless he had something she wanted, which probably meant something the Brotherhood wanted, which probably meant they better figure out what it was and fast. She turned to her friend catching the look in his eyes that he knew what she was thinking before she had chance to say it. "I have to go after her Doug, and you have to stay here. Find out who he is. What he knows. Obviously she targeted him for a reason, and having already gotten what she wanted she's one step ahead of us. I gotta go." She pulled away from Cypher leaving him to the dazed victim. Adrenaline started pumping in her veins. Okay, Kitty she said to herself as she stalked the stalker. You can do this. You have the advantage here. she can't steal what she can't touch, right? She spied the Brotherhooder speaking into a gum wrapper, obviously a transmitter in disguise. magneto and his lackeys were nothing if not on the up and up when it came to the latest spy gadgetry. "I'd ask you for a piece of gum, but well my mother always warned me against the taking candy from a stranger. You can forget about going anywhere. Consider this a citizen's arrest. You brotherhooder's just keep getting more brazen every single time we see you. Well it stops. Now." Kitty's voice was all authority enough so it would surprise even her. But in that moment as she stared at Rogue all she could see was the hurt Magneto and his like had done, and here was her chance to make it right. "You want to do this the easy way or the hard way? Personally I'm game for either." |

Rogue lowered the false gum packet from her lips. She gave a small smile. See, she could further the mutant cause without actually hurting anyone. Sure, she might’ve sapped a bit of Paul Robertson’s strength but it wasn’t a big deal. He’d recover. His career and livelihood, however, would be shot to hell. Suddenly there was a voice from behind her. It was young but full of authority. Rogue spun around to find another young woman trying to look tough a few feet away. The Southern Belle hadn’t been as sly as she thought she was. She had picked up a tail or had been seen. In the old days Mystique would have tanned her hide. Being spotted or noticed in their line of work usually led to a failed mission or getting shot through and through. That would go over well, yeah right. But Rogue had the information in her mind so as long as she could get away, it would be okay. The striped mutant recognized the woman as one of Xavier’s people. Her name was Katherine and she used a codename that sounded like it would be punctuated with smiley faces and hearts in the heading of some instant messenger service. Rogue only remembered that she wasn’t one of the heavy hitters like Cyclops, Phoenix, or Logan. The Brotherhood member did know that looks could be deceiving and you had to be careful of the little ones that hung back in battle. Sometimes they could pack a surprise to turn the tide. Rogue glared for a moment at Kitty. “You wide-eyed kids always think everyone is so innocent. That just ain’t true, sugah,” Rogue replied acidly. “The Brotherhood isn’t the monster under the bed. Most of the time it’s just regular humans and you X-Folk can’t pull the covers over your head forever.” Rogue had seen firsthand how cruel humans could be. She was just a little girl when she was driven out of her home. It wasn’t her fault that Cody got hurt but the people in town just wouldn’t have it. She was different and had to go. There was no room for anything strange. Then when she joined Mystique, Rogue saw the labs and the weapons that they tested on mutants. She saw the pictures of vivisection and dissection. She knew that the world wasn’t filled with butterflies and unicorns. She took off those rose-tinted glasses and stomped them under her boot a long time ago. Rogue gave a glance over her shoulder. The edge of the doorway down the alley was glowing pink. It was telltale of Ariel’s power. It wasn’t the least conspicuous way to get around but it did the job just fine. “Easy way or the hard way? Sugah, a wise man once said, “You gotta know when to hold ‘em and when to fold ‘em. Know when to walk away and when to…’” With that Rogue turned and ran for the grimy door with the pink light emanating from the cracks. This was a situation where she knew it would be best to cut and run. There was no need to fight. Rogue had the information she was after and she needed to get away. Her boots gripped the alley pavement and propelled her forward. She pounded along the asphalt. Her hand reached for the doorknob and jerked the door open being bathed in pink light. Rogue never looked back to see if Kitty had followed her or if she had made a clean getaway. |

Kitty Pryde was not exactly known for spontaneity, but sometimes you just had to follow your gut. That wasn't to say she disregarded the benefits of having an actual plan but if her time with the X-men had taught her anything it was that the best plans often fell apart. You had to have instinct and guts and sometimes just run right out against the wind. As she and Rogue traded verbal barbs Kitty realized that at this moment though some kind of plan just might come in handy. She had only thought as far as catching up with Rogue not exactly what she would do once she got there. So Kitty was playing a game that was all bluff and she was waiting for that flashing light bulb to go off in her head and tell her what to do. What she knew was this : Rogue was a criminal and criminals needed to be stopped. Vigilante justice maybe wasn't Kitty's trade in arms but she knew enough to know that when things like this happened you couldn't turn a blind eye. The Brotherhooder was up to something and whatever she had learned from draining that guy back there it was important that she not get the information to her boss. Magneto had claimed enough victories and done enough damage in the name of his cause to set them all back for a lifetime of suffering. Maybe Kitty couldn't stop them but she could damn well slow them down. "You wanna try and white wash all the blood you've spilled under that banner flag of mutant superiority mumbo jumbo is that it?" she said angrily when Rogue tried to defend her cause. Like any true terrorist the life stealing mutant was so subscribed to the notion that the ends would justify the means that she was deeply blinded to all the flaws in the manifesto. A life was still a life. X-men didn't kill and they valued both mutant and human alike. What the Brotherhood did was evil by definition, they broke laws and murdered for a cause that only they believed in. The system for mutants was flawed but it was what it was. No one race. be it mutant, human, or martian had the right to rule over another. They all bled red in most cases anyway. "I sleep well every night sugah." Kitty spat out at the southerner. "Which is more then I bet I can say for you. Tell me do you see the faces of the people you've helped kill, the lives you've left in ruin before you go to sleep. There are no monsters under my bed, but there in the mirror looking back out at you aren't they?" Kitty knew that no one was solely good or solely evil. Each person made choices and each person had the potential for building and for destruction. But the road to peace was the only just road, Violence beget more violence and hate more hate. Maybe Rogue didn't see herself as the villain in this piece, but the Southern girl sure as hell couldn't paint herself as the good guy either from where Kitty was standing. If Rogue was blindly devoted to her cause then Kitty was blindly devoted to hers and hers meant stopping the Brotherhooder by whatever means she could. Then with a few witty words Rogue was off darting for her escape. In that moment she didn't think she only felt, and what she felt was compelled. Compelled to stop Rogue, to not sit back and let the BH steal another win for their deranged cause. So as Rogue ran to the door Kitty in blind faith that she was doing what she had to ran after her. The second Rogue stepped through the door Kitty's hand latched on to her clothed shoulder. "Stick around." she said as pink light over washed the two of them. And then she was gone. |

The last thing that Rogue heard as she rushed headlong into the glowing pink doorway were the words of the X-Men’s resident ghost girl, “Stick around.” Rogue didn’t feel the hand on her shoulder. She didn’t feel anything except the sensation of falling. The striped mutant was expecting to tumble into a room at Murder World with Kitty close behind and perhaps Ariel staring down at them with her wide eyes and her ridiculous pink hued hair. Sure, having the X-Man fall into the Brotherhood’s lair would have been a black spot on her record with the terrorists. But then again, any hurt they could dish out on the X-Men by torturing one of their members could probably bring a sadistic smile to some of the group. That wasn’t entirely Rogue’s plan, and honestly she would have hated for that to have happened. She didn’t want anyone to get tortured. If someone had to die, Rogue wanted it to be quick. It turned out that Rogue and Shadowcat did not barrel into Murder World. Rogue had no idea where the hell they had ended up. Rogue was falling for a couple of moments. The sky was blue above her and she could see that it was obscured by trees and their greenery. Gravity got the best of her and she slammed into something rough and prickly. Rogue groaned loudly and gasped as the breath was knocked out of her. The Southern Belle had landed in a bush and the limbs tugged at her hair and clothes. With a great inhale, she was able to catch her wind. Immediately afterward, she let out a long low wail. Rogue whipped her head around trying to take in her surroundings. She was in the forest. Definitely not Murder World. She could have been miles away from civilization. Why had Ariel’s portal opened up midway through the jump? Why had she not appeared in Murder World? Rogue reached into her pocket and pulled out the transmitter disguised as a pack of gum. “Ariel! When I get back Ah’m gonna whup you like a red-headed step-child! Bring me back!” she yelled into the transmitter but there was only a shriek of electric static in return. Rogue rose to her feet from the bush and inspected herself. She was just bruised up but there were no serious injuries. The mutant shoved the transmitter into her pocket. It was useless now but she didn’t want to just toss it to the dirt. She looked around again and saw the other young woman gaining her bearings. “This is your fault!” Rogue shouted angrily. “Ah don’t know how, but Ah’m betting it is!” Rogue looked around and put her hand on top of her head. She realized the Yankee’s hat had come off and was lodged in the bush. “Ah don’t know if we’re even in New York anymore. We could be out in God’s Country or something.” Rogue then whirled around with a pointed finger, and her accent flaring more than usual as it normally did when she grew agitated, “And if you make any cracks about me being able to get us out of here because Ah talk like Ah’m outta Deliverance Ah’ll punch a turd out of you before you can say ‘purty mouth’.” Rogue took a deep breath and dusted off the ball cap. She sighed. "Sorry. Ah kinda snapped there." |

Bravado was a good thing, but not necessarily a smart thing. As her hands grabbed onto the sleeve of Rogue's shirt and she was aglow in pink light Kitty realized she had messed up. Even as the sensation of being moved through space and air took hold and she muttered out a very audible "Uh Oh" Kitty Pryde knew that she had went one step too far this time and crossed the line from bravery into foolishness. Soon she found herself falling, the feeling of no gravity causing the weird sensation and then with a resounding thud the X-man found Terra firma again. "Oww." she muttered, sitting up and rubbing what she was sure would be a noticeable bruise in a few hours on her back. "Haven't you guys ever heard of smooth transit." she muttered to the Brotherhooder who clearly seemed at a loss as to where they had ended up as well. Kitty turned her head taking in the surrounding. They had ended up in some sort of forest, or wilderness definitely of course considering how angry Rogue was as she yelled into a pack of chewing gum. Kitty really hoped that was some sort of disguised walkie talkie, if not she was stranded with someone who was crazy as well as evil. "Me?!" Kitty yelled as Rogue attempted to but the blame for their marooning square on her. "News flash sweetie, I'm not the one who was running some sort of covert, mind swap and grab back there. You gotta problem with how it ended take it up with management, or better yet file it in the suggestion box 'of things I really couldn't care less about'. Now where the hell are we? And as for the Deliverance bit, well if the shoe fits." Kitty stood up feeling the weight of the small satchel purse awkwardly hanging around her neck. Quickly she dug in it pulling her phone out. Wait till everyone back at Xavier's heard about this. Wouldn't it be a tale to tell. "Damn it" she cursed as she opened the flip phone and shut it again. "No service. Wherever you got us dropped off at it's in the middle of nowhere. Way to go Ace. Please tell me how we haven't put a stop to you guys yet because obviously your operating like a real top notch institute." Kitty Pryde rolled her eyes and gathered her long brown hair back into a ponytail and clasped it. If being an X-man had taught her anything it was to be a realist and the reality was Kitty had gotten herself into a mess and now she had to get her own self out of it. Doug by now would have alerted the others but as Rogue pointed out there was a reasonable chance they weren't even located still in the state of New York less alone the city proper. What have you gotten yourself mixed up in Pryde? She wondered to herself as she prepared to get her walk on. If she could get somewhere, to someone who could tell her where she was, she could call the others and start getting out of this mess. "Well we better start walking. Unless of course you'd rather keep yelling into your pack of Juicy Fruit, who knows maybe it will send you a cab." Kitty sighed as she took in the situation, stranded with no phone, no one even knowing she was really missing and trapped with a terrorist member of the Brotherhood. Yep. You've done a swell job today. "We better get going. It'll be dark in a few hours and while I have no problem with you getting eaten by some sort of Brown Bear I have too much respect for mother Nature to wish eating on you on the bear. I mean, he's never tried to destroy the world before by joining up with an evil coalition. I actually respect him." She took a few steps before looking back to see whether or not Rogue was going to follow her. "We both want out of here. We can work together or you can sit around and wait for Scotty to come beam you up. As for me north is this way, and you have yourself to suit." |

Kitty was no slouch. She was giving as good as she got. Rogue had railed into her with a verbal assault and the X-Man shot right back. Kitty was acting as if being stranded in the woods was Rogue’s fault. If the Brotherhooder hadn’t been out on a mission this would have never happened. That was probably true in a much broader sense but that wasn’t the way that Rogue saw things. In her mind, the fault was squarely on Kitty’s dainty little shoulders. As exasperating as the situation was, it wasn’t the total end of the world. They were still alive and after all, it could have been just the two of them against a Horseman or Apocalypse. As Kitty pulled her hair back into a ponytail Rogue took a couple of deep breaths and tried to assess the mess. It was something that Mystique had taught Rogue. Remain calm and take in everything around you; you can master most any situation. They were in the forest in an undetermined location. Rogue could deal with woods. Trees were no problem. There was still some daylight left so hopefully, the pair could find a road or something before sunset. Rogue didn’t want to have to be in the forest after dark. She had no way to start a fire and they had no food. “Well, that is something that we can agree on, sugah,” Rogue said to Shadowcat’s offer. “We might have miles to go.” As they walked, Kitty made some long winded remark about feeling sorry for a bear if it ate Rogue. The bear had never tried to commit genocide after all. Then Kitty went on to say that she was walking in the direction that she felt was north. They might as well stick together for the time being. Rogue fell into step behind Kitty. “Ah don’t want to get stuck out here after dark. No tellin what is out here,” Rogue replied. “Besides, stickin with you might scare all the animals away, with all your yammering. Do they have a class on Unbridled Pep at that school?” Rogue and Kitty walked in that direction for a while. Rogue kept her ears open to listen for the sound of vehicles nearby that could indicate a road nearby. They could flag down a ride. The women could either hitchhike or carjack. At that point, it didn’t matter to Rogue. All she needed a car and she could get where she was going. They continued walking maneuvering through brush and bushes. Thankfully there were very few mosquitoes out. While the sun was up and possibly into the early night it would still be warm. Neither of the women were especially dressed for inclement weather so Rogue counted it toward their good fortune for the good weather. Not that Rogue would say, “What a nice day to be stranded in the middle of nowhere.” After a lull in the conversation to break up some of the silence Rogue told Kitty, “You know not all of the Brotherhood is like what you imagine. We’re not all the same. Take Spitfire. Or Voght. They’re not hardened murderers. Or that man you saw me with? Do you know he is guilty of? He’s funding anti-mutant movements and Ah hijacked some of his memories to bring him down…legally. I can ruin him with what I know now and nobody has to get hurt, let alone get killed.” Rogue wasn’t sure why but it just came bubbling out of her. It was strange. She was used to people judging her. They had done it all her life and it had just made her tough. She wasn’t going to back down from a fight, but Rogue didn’t understand why she felt like justifying herself to this young X-Man. “We’re not all that bad. Just like Ah’m sure there’s plenty of skeletons in ya’ll’s closets at the school.” |

There were a lot of things Kitty Pryde was thankful for. In this moment as she trudged through foreign wooded landscape the young X-man was thankful that in her life she had never held a fundamental desire to dress exceptionally girly, all frills and high heels. She sent a silent prayer to heaven in gratitude that she was comfortably in her Nike Shocks and blue jeans. Otherwise the set up of two debutantes stranded in the middle of nowhere just boobs and stripper heels would scream out in her mind. Hollywood never did get it right, why were women always presented as helpless, always scantily clad running from the big bad psycho in four inch stilettos, doing okay and until they take that nasty tumble, twist that ankle and then are road kill. Kitty hated such notions. She hated the thought that all women were just short skirts out to be psycho killer bait in those movies and she hated that so many of the villains were identified by their frightening mask or scarred faces. Kitty knew real evil seldom wore masks like that. It was often beautiful faces that hid fiendish minds. Case in point the Brotherhooder beside her. What made the whole situation so appalling to Kitty was not so much who Rogue was but rather that this person, this woman would so easily try and defend the things she had done and the people she had stood behind. Kitty had hoped she would make it through this evening without losing her temper but the feminist X-man was far too opinionated to stand idly by and let someone try and sell her on such blatant delusions. "And on the day hypocrisy reached a new level, we stood in awe and watched." She responded after Rogue tried to white wash what she had done and what she would do now. Kitty stopped and looked at Rogue, her hazel eyes bright as she turned to look the life stealing mutant squarely in the face. "Talk about your 'Twinkie' defense? Really?! Your going to justify an array of murder, destruction, mayhem, chaos and just about every other troublesome thing under the sun with 'we're not all bad we're just misunderstood' bull. Spare me, alright. You wanna justify what you do, whatever, fine, whatever helps you sleep. But sell your crazy someplace else, sister. We're all stocked up here." Kitty took a few steps on infuriated as she thought of all the implications. Sure what Rogue said was feasible, no one was truly evil nor truly good. Kitty had seen and lived long enough to know that. But trying to shade all of her misdeeds under an umbrella of 'I'm not as bad as some others, was something that was simply not going to fly with Kitty. You were who you kept, the company you stood by and stood up for. Maybe Rogue told herself she was free from the harsher tolls of what Magneto had done simply because she hadn't participated in those crimes, but the fact that she commended, that she could follow such a man who could do such things was enough to stir Kitty's judgment and contempt. "I swear it baffles my mind really." she started up again gesturing emphatically with her arms and hands as she talked and walked unaware if even Rogue was following let alone listening. Kitty was lost in her debate, and when it came to making her point the phaser rarely cared if she missed the forest for the trees, no pun intended. "I know what we'll do since we are sooo superior judging by your bosses definition of the word., lets round up all those lesser beings, cause surely they're not people, I mean not like we're people and we'll barter them off as labor and property. Put them too work cause they should serve us, cause we're SUPERIOR! Or no better yet. I HAVE IT!" She turned to face Rogue again snapping her fingers as though she had just come up with the most original, brilliant idea ever. "On second thought lets round them all up and we'll put them in containment camps, cause people who aren't like us, who aren't superior, hell if they deserve to live. They'll only pollute our race, with their less than status. Because we can't have that now can we, not if we want that great Magneto stamped dream." Her words were drenched in sarcasm and her face reading of disgust. It was hard for her to even think of such things, such bias and not get a sick feeling in her stomach, and here she was arguing about it with someone who had justified a new spin on such old hateful teachings. "Look in your history books, it's the same story just a new dictator. One race being swapped out for another. One mad man's vision and fervent supporters desperate to believe in something. Cause it's always easier to burn then build, always simpler to hurt than to heal." "What makes you think mutant kind is fit to lead a society, let alone rule the world? I know some truly beautiful people who have no more mutant gene then a fish in the sea and I know people with powers that I wouldn't trust to put the right shoe on the right foot every morning and I'm simply supposed to accept that because of genetics that person is worth more than the other?! Well excuse me if I don't! I'd rather know a person for who they are then rather what they can do. And as far as how great Magneto is supposed to be well you know what who asked him to save mutant kind?! Who appointed him the lone voice crying out in the darkness?! I may not like my President but at least I got a vote! What did you get Rogue, besides a command?" They were starting to come into a clearing, or what Kitty hoped would be a clearing. All the arguing was only making her feel each step more and it was wearing to be so enraged. "I'm not so blind as to think everything's perfect. I know whats out there, I know how many people hate us simply because of how we're born, but I also know that an eye for an eye leaves everyone blind. Tell me, when has war every accomplished anything? I wanna believe in better, that we can live in peace. I know that your earn respect and trust but you can only instill fear. And you can take this to the bank cause its certifiable, let Magneto get everything he wants, let him achieve his dream of power and domination over the races and see how quick he starts segregating from there. 'Only mutants with powerful gifts are worthy, only non deformed mutants special enough to be in his 'Sanctuary. Psssh, power corrupts. You wanna believe in something Rogue, start with yourself. It may be harder but at least you'll be able to look in a mirror. Oh but thats right, you're really just good people. Funny, huh, sure are a lot of people dying around so many good people." She had arrived at the cleared glade and saw a ramshackle house in the clearing with a beat up truck sitting in the yard. Hallelujah Kitty thought We're delivered. "Let's see if they have a phone we can use. So we can both get the hell out of here" |

Rogue rolled her eyes as Kitty went into her tirade. She spoke of hypocrisy and that Rogue was just trying to justify her own actions to help her sleep at night. Rogue could care less. She had been judged and hated her whole life. She had been chased from towns for not fitting in so she decided never to look back. Sure the violence was wearing on her and she had begun to grow weary of the brutal and bloodthirsty practices. That wasn’t what was keeping Rogue awake at night, though. It wasn’t the faces of dying victims with their final breaths caught in a gag in the back of their throats. Rogue couldn’t sleep because of the voices. The voices of everyone that she had imprinted hovered in her mind like specters. They were faint and floated around to haunt most of Rogue’s waking moments as well. She could feel them but she could never quite grasp them. If her life were a stage, they were behind the backdrop walking to and fro whispering lines to her that weren’t in the script. The curtain billowed and Rogue could just barely make out their fingertips, reaching desperately, through the cloth. Kitty continued talking, which she seemed to be very good at, as she walked. She stopped abruptly and turned giving a snap of her fingers. Her lesson was now comparing Magneto to Hitler saying that history was simply going to repeat itself and those that didn’t learn from it were doomed to repeat it. Just the same song and dance. Rogue crossed her arms. “What did Ah get besides a command? I got a place to live. People who accepted me for being me, for being a mutant. They didn’t chase me from town and threaten to kill me. They gave me a chance,” Rogue explained. They came to a clearing and Rogue could almost feel the bile rising in the back of her throat. Little Miss Sunshine admitted that she knew things in the world weren’t perfect but still continued to preach. Rogue was about ready to just plug her ears and ignore anything else she said but the southern belle was open. She wasn’t going to shut someone down just because they disagreed. Besides, there was an old saying about sticks and stones. But she went on to say that Magneto’s dream would quickly become corrupted. He would close the doors to Sanctuary against those that he didn’t deem worthy. Rogue scoffed. Magneto wanted nothing more than all mutants to find their place in the world, and usually that place was on the top of the pecking order. Magento was a lot of things but Rogue couldn’t imagine him segregating mutants. The clearing opened up and there was an old cabin and truck that had seen better days. Despite her company, Rogue let a smile grow across her face. Even though the truck looked like a rattling heap it was the most beautiful thing Rogue had seen in a long time. Rogue gave a look around. It didn’t seem like anyone was around or had been around for a long time. Kitty said that she was going to take a closer look and ask for help. “You go ahead and do that,” Rogue replied. “God helps those that help themselves, sugah.” The striped mutant walked over to the truck and gave it a good looking over. She pulled the door open with a creak from the hinges. She pulled down the visor looking for keys. She felt around the dash and under the bench seat. “Looks like Ah have to do this the old fashioned way,” Rogue said. Not finding a screwdriver in the cab Rogue leaned over and kicked downward with her heel against the steering column. The casing snapped open to reveal the wires underneath. Rogue shifted around so that she was hunkered under the dashboard so she could reach the wires. Hotwiring a car was something that Rogue had learned early on from Mystique. It was a skill she could rely on without her powers. It had helped her out in several situations. She leaned up as she pressed a pair of wires together. The engine made a grinding noise as she peered over the dash. Kitty was walking toward the house just as a man appeared in the doorway. He was joined by several others that were still disguised in the shadows of the house. He had a shotgun in his hand. “Watch it girl!” Rogue yelled out. She found the right wires and the engine gunned to life. Rogue righted herself quickly and slammed the door shut. Rogue hit the clutch and shifted into gear. The truck bounced along toward Kitty. She didn’t think about it. She could have left her there to fend for herself. Rogue should have after the sermon that the X-Man gave. Without even thinking she barreled the truck toward Kitty to offer up a getaway. She couldn’t exactly think of a great reason not to, either. "Jump in darlin'!" she yelled. |

She had only made a few steps to the door when Rogue squealed up to her, opening the passenger door up and told Kitty to jump in. There were a hundred reasons why she shouldn't do it, but strangely in that moment Kitty couldn't pull up any. So far today she had broken so many of her own rules what was another one? "When in Rome.." she mumbled to herself before hoisting her body up into the beatup trucks cab. She slammed the door loudly shut and with no other word spoken the two strangers were off traveling down the road. She lowered the window down, allowing the wind to blow in the vehicle and stir her hair up. So much about this was wrong but at the same time exhilarating. Twelve hours ago Kitty could never have imagined such an adventure nor would she have ever thought she would have been craving one. And yet trouble had fund her and somehow she had survived, so far at least. Each spin of the tires was a strike to rebellion and maybe even stupidity but it was thrilling even if it was dangerous. They traveled in silence for a bit before Kitty spoke again this time calmer and more rationale. "Was it really like that for you? People chasing you, threatening to kill you?" She looked out at the passenger mirror again, seeing them make distance from wherever they were to wherever they were going. It's funny she thought, places never change their position only people change where they are in regards to them "It doesn't have to be like that you know." she said turning her head to look over at the Brotherhooder driving the truck. "Whatever loyalty you think you owe them you don't. I'm sorry you went through what you did I can't imagine what that was like but it doesn't give you a pass. People can be awful, they can be cruel and wicked but revenge doesn't answer anything it only validates their hate. Do you think what Magneto is doing is making the world better for anyone? All that killing and destruction is that really helping? Is it sparing one child the nightmare of growing up and being treated like you were for being a mutant or is it stoking the fires giving more cause for hatred instead of acceptance." She brushed a wind tossed set of dark curls back behind her ears. Kitty knew she lacked the eloquence of Jean or Scott on speeches like this. She wasn't as practiced in explaining their cause but what she lacked in description the X-man made up for in sincerity. "We don't turn people away because of their pasts. Trust me on that one, You can't help who you fell in with but you can now. You can be better Rogue but you have to want it for yourself. It's not the worst thing in the world to do like Lennon said and give peace a chance, you might even surprise yourself." It was then that Kitty heard the unmistakable sounds of sirens coming from in behind them and blue flashing lights appearing in the rearview horizon. The moment of sweetness had passed as the reality of being in a stolen truck with a wanted fugitive terrorist became abundantly clear to the X-man. "Great!" she exclaimed, "fan-friggin-tastic!" "Well what's your brilliant plan now and it better not be some Thelma and Louise type cliff jump. I'm not going out in a pseudo-lesbian dare devil stunt! Maybe we can just, I don't know, explain we borrowed the truck?" She looked at Rogue and then realized the stupidity of her own response. "Yeah, we're screwed." |

When Kitty leaped into the cab of the truck and slammed the door, Rogue jammed on the gas pedal and spun the tires to kick up gravel as they sped away. Rogue drove through the back roads in hope of finding something that would lead them to the hardtop and toward civilization. Kitty rolled down the window to let her hair blow in the wind. Rogue couldn’t help but smile. It was exhilarating to be on the run, living on that edge with everything in jagged clarity due to the adrenaline. Kitty looked over and asked if Rogue’s life was really like that. The smile eroded from Rogue’s face with the memories that question brought up. “Yeah. There were several times Ah had to run out in the middle of the night because folks found out Ah was a mutant. It was really lonely until Ah met up with,” Rogue almost said Mystique but she didn’t want to divulge that information but instead she inserted the word, “momma.” Kitty then went on to explain about loyalty and that Rogue didn’t owe the Brotherhood loyalty. Did Rogue actually think that what Magneto was doing could help anyone? “This is a war, Kitty. Mutants are abused and persecuted. Look at Genosha. They’re slaves. War ain’t pretty but,” then she stalled slightly, “It’s all part of the program.” Rogue tried to think about it. What was keeping her with the Brotherhood? They barely offered her a semblance of family. She was about as well off on her own. There was a handful of the mutants that she might miss. Mystique held a place in Rogue’s heart. She was like the mother that Rogue never had. Or as close as a murderous blue shapeshifter could be to a mother. Rogue followed Kitty’s gaze in the mirror and looked. The flashing blue lights of the patrol car reflected onto her face. “Plan?” Rogue asked. Most of her life had been learn on the fly. “Ah think you need to hold on tight.” Rogue slammed on the gas once more and sent the truck flying forward. It jerked forward and fishtailed slightly as it caught traction. Rogue sped along curves and through the road. She grimaced against the steering wheel. She didn’t want to get them killed after having saved Kitty from those guys in the woods. Every few seconds she would give a look into the rearview mirror and the police were still there. In her mind, at any second they would open fire on the old truck. Ahead, the area opened up into a clearer path. The road was straight and in the straight patch the cop car could ease up next to them and force them from the road. The old clunker truck couldn’t outrun the police in a dead race. Ahead the arms of a railroad crossing lowered slowly. A train was coming across the tracks. Rogue wished she could press the pedal through the floor for extra speed. She wanted more distance between them and the police. The railroad arms were down all the way and the train was going across. They were headed right for the blocked railroad crossing. “Time to work your magic or we’ll wind up worse than Thelma and Louise!” Rogue yelled. |
