July 1st 1:00 AM Kane was sitting in the kitchen alone currently eating rewarmed pizza, because of his powers it tasted like it had just been cooked which was something that he was happy about. Sure his life hadn't been the best recently but he could look after himself, he was in some of the best shape of his life phyiscally. This all linked back to Jo's death though he had gone from being Mr civilian to being Titan, a cold heartless mutant. it still hurt him now that Jo was gone but he wasn't going to break like they had wanted him to do so. the mansion was quiet tonight, it normally died down quickly as the kids had curfew, he had kept himself to himself when he could, not that he had a problem with that, the X men were a nice group of people, he was sure you could bottle their happiness of some of the kids and keep the planet running for years, sure he was a cynical, depressed bastard but he embraced that side of him and knew that it was a part of him now. He got up from the table and opened the fridge, he needed something to drink, there wasn't enough beer in this house, sure they had a lot of it but there were a lot of adults in the house and he was sure that the kids where sneaking it out of the kitchen and into their rooms. He took a bottle of coke out of the fridge and uncorked the lid as he turned back to his seat and sat back down. |

Rahne, as she was wont to do from time to time thanks to her lupine nature, was having a particularly nocturnal evening. Sleep didn't want to come, and it was something that she had been used to for years by now. She tended to walk the hallways, like a silent sentry, taking advantage of her superhuman sense to "check in" on people while they were asleep, to make sure they were safe and sound, another reflection of the canine aspects of her personality. As she was making her rounds, a noise in the kitchen caught her attention, and, acting on near-compulsory instinct, she headed over to investigate. Her rational side was certain it was nothing to be worried about, just another faculty member going through a restless evening, but instincts refused to rule out any possibility, be it an actual threat or someone who may have been hurt and in need of assistance. "Oh," she said as she made her way through the doorway, only to see their most recent guest, a man whose name she couldn't quite remember. She hadn't had much, if any, real contact with the man, and so she didn't know him all too well. Still, he almost radiated a sense of melancholy, perhaps even anger, underlying hostility that she'd have been remiss to overlook. She couldn't help but wonder what was behind that, but it wasn't her business and she wouldn't go snooping. "Evenin', sir. Or rather good morning, I suppose," she said with a chuckle. "Havin' a wee bit of trouble sleeping?" |

"I don't think I have had a good night's sleep in a long time," Kane said with a chuckle before taking a drink of coke. This was true, since his wife had died Kane had been plagued with dream after dream and nightmare after nightmare watching that house go up in flames again and again. This was one of the reasons why he didn't stick around in a group with the X men and was more of a loner, after all if he wa friends with them if one of them died he would not handle the loss well again. When he had arrived he had lose affiliations with some of the members he kind of got on with Banshee who had brought him to the institute, he didn't really know much about anyone else. Kane had taken to staying in his room or just sleeping in late, there had been times he had been in the danger room, he was sure he could have overheated the room with the amount of time he was in there but the system was able to hold up with his powers. "What about you?" he asked Wolfsbane a he looked at her curiously "trouble sleeping?" |

"Oh, that's too bad," Rahne said with a shrug of her shoulders before gesturing with a tilt of her head towards the bottle of Coca Cola in his hand. "That surely won't help ye any, though." She opened the refrigerator and began filing through it, opening up the meat drawer and pulling out a bag of sandwich meats - honey-baked ham, to be precise. Shutting the door behind her, she pulled out a single slice and rolled it up tightly before taking a bite off the tip. "Ye know, ye may want to have a visit with Dr. McCoy or Nurse Doyle. They may be able to, I dunno, at the very least give ye somethin' to help with the insomnia. They're very good with what they do," she sat leaned up against the countertop and observed him with a slight curiosity. There was something to him, something about his demeanor that was... she couldn't quite put a finger on it. "Oh, no, I'm a bit wolf, and sometimes that means some nocturnal evenings, is all," she said with a shrug of her shoulders. She didn't look it at the time, though, maintaining her red-haired, fair complexion as opposed to her more hirsute half wolf form. "Terribly sorry, I dinnae think we've been introduced. Name's Rahne Sinclair. I teach the wee ones here," she leaned forward, and extended her right hand for a handshake. |

Kane couldn't help but smile at Rahne as she introduced herself and actually showed concern for him because of his insomnia. The truth was Kane was in a way happy with the fact he couldn't sleep, it made him remember Jo, he saw it as his fault and he would never forgive himself for what had happened to his wife, he shouldnt have been allowed to sleep whilst she was laying in a ground rotting somewhere, Kane wasn't a religious man but he believed that people got what they deserved and he deserved to suffer. Jo had been an innocent and being with him had been what had gotten her killed, if she had stayed away from him she would have been safe but the stubborn girl that she was didn't allow him to distance himself from her and she ended up dead. "I'll pass on the good doc's help," Kane said "i deserve these dreams, this insomnia it stops me from fogetting what i am and i what i have done. i am ok with the lack of sleep now a days, it was more a pain when it first started." Then he finished the coke and threw the bottle into the bin. "I'm Titan," he said extending his hand to shake hers "Kane Tate." |

"Oh... I... I see..." Rahne said, tilting her head to the left at his explanation. Deserved it? Had he done something? Hurt someone? Perhaps worse? Was it intentional? Or perhaps one of those incidents that tend to happen when a mutant's abilities first manifest - an accidental outpouring of energy that results in injury to innocents? He would find her grip surprisingly strong considering her overall petite size, her handshake firm, assertive. She wasn't one to go for that limp-wristed greeting where the hand and arm just hang there like dead weight, making the other party do all the work. She had enough confidence and comfort with herself to feel just fine in letting people know that. "Pleased t' make yuir acquaintance, Mister Tate," she smiled as she spoke, her expression giving off a certain warmth of personality, an overall pleasantness to her entire being. "So... with the code name I'm assumin' that means yuir interested in takin' up active duty with the X-Men? I'm sure that whatever skills ye bring to the table are more than welcome. Of course, I cannae speak for Mister Summers, but anyone willing to help out, savin' the world an' whatnot, is a good egg in my book." |

Kane could see she was confused at what he meant by he deserved it and he wasn't itching to tell her but he guessed it was best it come from the horse's mouth. "I hid during the apocalypse," Kane said not really proud of it but that was what he had done he had hidden to keep Jo safe "me, my wife and my family all moved to Ireland to get away, I was open about my abilities i wasn't ashamed of them, some humans however didn't like that there was a mutant around, especially when things got really bad, they tried to burn the house down and kill me in there, of course because of my power i was safe from the fire, Jo my wife and our unborn baby sadly, didn't have the protection and i couldn't control the fire enough." Kane had tears in his eyes at this point, it hurt so much with them being gone he felt empty, like a broken man and there was nothing that anyone could say or do that would change that feeling in him. "And as for me being a good guy?" Kane said "naw, i am just helping with the brotherhood, imagine the humans and Magneto around without us it would be hell for the good upstanding folk" |

"Oh, dear," Rahne's smile quickly turned to a frown, her brow furrowing slightly. She had a bit of first hand experience with that kind of fear becoming hatred becoming murderous intent, but in her case, she was the lone target and rescue had come just in time for her to be spared an agonizing death. But something like this? His demeanor made perfect sense. It was the kind of thing that could break even the strongest of hearts, erode even the most stalwart of souls. "Ye cannae blame yuirself for that, though," she said, shaking her head. "Ye did yuir best, you acted to protect yuir loved ones, and ye simply cannae fault yuirself for such a horrible calamity. It was beyond yuir control." She took a deep breath, and let it out slowly. "An' while I'd never met yuir wife, I am certain that she'd nae want ye to allow yuirself to be consumed by what happened to her, nobody would want that, most especially not of the people they love." She knew it was more complicated than she was making it out to be, that there was no simple "off-switch" for depression, but she hoped that maybe, just maybe, there could be a small part of him that would take to heart what she said and someday grant him the ability to move on. The way he spoke, like he deserved to be punished for the death of his wife and child, suggested that he was beating himself up out of guilt. And that simply was not right. |

Kane was both consoled and angry at the same time when Wolfsbane talked about Jo, how Jo would want him to be, this woman didn't know Jo she had no right saying what Jo would want but at the same time he knew that she was right, Jo wouldn't want to see him drunk most nights of the week and the other nights laid up in the infirmary barely alive, she would throw a fit that he would drink and then go and train with his powers, he knew he could hurt someone else or himself but he didn't really care at the time. At the same time he was consoled by what she had said he had been beating himself up for too long about what had happened and maybe that was where his own problems had been stemming from, he wasn;t sure but he knew that if he was going to be a fully fledged member of the Xmen for this war he would have to make changes to himself. "Your right," he said sighing "she wouldn't want this for me, she would be on my ass for drinking and the risks i have been taking i am being to reckless, is there some way of me finding this Hank McCoy where is he normally?" |

"Well, I'm sure he's asleep at the moment, but he's usually down in his laboratory in the Sub-Basement," she said, a small smile coming back to her face. She wasn't certain if he was just saying this to get her off of his back or if he genuinely meant it, but she had to believe that he meant it. It wasn't really in her nature to distrust people, especially if they were here at the school. "I'm sorry if I spoke out of turn," she said, nodding her head. She hoped she hadn't offended, hadn't made him feel too ashamed or hurt. That wasn't her intention, though in hindsight, she understood that it was entirely possible that what she had said could have been construed as butting into his business when she had no right to. She walked over to him and carefully placed her right hand on his shoulder, giving a light squeeze as a show of support. "We'll help you out," she said with a nod of her head. "Really, I hardly think ye could have found a better place to come. I truly am sorry f'r yuir loss, an' I'll keep you in my prayers. Yuir gonna be fine. It'll take some work, I know, but I know ye'll be fine in the long run." |

Kane knew he should have guessed that Hank would be asleep after all it was past 1 am and just because Kane was awake that didn't automatically mean that everyone else would be up as well, of course Wolfsbane was the exception to this apparantly which caused Kane to smirk. "You didn't speak out of turn." Kane told her truthfully "you just said to me something that i should have realised a long time ago and i didn't Jo wouldn't want me to be like this, i have to get my head on straight otherwise i am going to end up being dead." Kane knew he was right, he had made mistakes, some he wouldnt be able to fix, some he would have the chance to fix but what he had gone through, losing Jo and not being able to deal with her death, he would get over this, the Xmen seemed to want to help him which was something that he hadn't expected and he realised him being isolated from them not only affected him but it affected them just as much. "Thanks," he said as she put her hand on his shoulder "I am not really one for praying myself but i appriciate the thought Rahne." |

"Well, that's quite a relief, then," she said, giving his shoulder a light pat before stepping back and returning to her little late night snack. "I tend t' speak my heart sometimes, whether or not the people around me might appreciate it." She couldn't help but feel good about this little exchange, a slight swelling of pride in her chest. Being of assistance to those around her was a good feeling, be it through taking action to prevent harm or teaching a new skill or talent or even simply through talking to someone and helping them get a new perspective on a problem. "Oh, I understand - not everyone is," she said with a small laugh. "I consider myself on fairly good terms with the Big Guy Upstairs, though - I think I can ask Him f'r a wee bit of a favor on yuir behalf." She finished her rolled-up slice of sandwich meat, and returned the bag to its place in the refrigerator. "Well, it's been an absolute pleasure meetin' ye, Mister Tate, but I think it's about time I moved on. Ye ever feel the need to talk or whatnot, feel free to stop by m' classroom 'r even my room up in the faculty hall." That urge to roam pushed her a little further - she had more people to check up on, more of the grounds to roam to make sure that everything was in its place, after all. She headed back towards the doorway to the kitchen, making her way outside, where she'd continue her walkabout. [Exit] |

Kane considered what Rahne had said and it had to be said that Kane and the big guy upststairs she had had called him didn't particularly get on, after all if Kane didn't blame himself he could blame this so called higher power that had taken his wife away from him, however he knew it wasnt the way to go. Kane had been down this darker path for too long, he understood that now, if he was going to stick around with the xmen he would have to focus on moving on and forgetting about the past. "It was nice meeting you two Rahne," Kane said with a smile as she turned and left after putting the meat back, Kane decided that maybe it was time for himself to try and sleep again, it had been a long time since he had actually slept a good amount of hours and he had long missed the pleasure of that long sleep. He looked out of the window and made sure that there was no one out there, not that he had like supervision, then he turned and turned all of the lights off in the room before leaving the room himself.
