August 3rd 4:45 a.m. Fitful sleep was better than none at all. James had tried it all. He went to bed early, then later, then made sure not to eat too much at night, then tried eating right before trying to sleep. Every little thing he tried ended up with him in the exact same position. Tossing back and forth in his bed, staring at the ceiling for long hours before drifting into a shallow doze for at most a few hours at a time. Then he would wake up earlier than he wanted to and pound his pillow in frustration. This morning was no different. Sighing in acceptance that it was going to be another sleepless night, James rolled out of bed and dressed quietly. He slinked through the halls of the school silently, a feat which was made possible for the mammoth mutant because of the years of traditional Native American training. His feet hardly made a whisper on the carpeted floors of the hallways as he ghosted down to the kitchen. Here, he finally did make a little noise, as he was still struggling to master the fickle coffee machine. It was especially hard in the dark, as James did not want to wake anyone by flipping on a light so early. Still he supposed he was getting better. When he had first started this morning tradition, he could never get it right. He either made the mistake of making expresso or decaf when only wanting to make a regular cup of java. But this morning was one of the better ones, he surmised as he took a sip from his coffee. He had actually managed to make a decent batch. James trudged out to the patio as the touches of light began to play out across the sky. At leas there was some benefit to bad sleeping habits. He got to watch the sun rise every morning. James sat on a table with his feet on a chair, letting the warm liquid caffeine awaken his numb mind and staring pensively out at the orange glow that announced the sun's arrival. |

Normally, a man fighting in the front lines in the wake of a global crisis would be a little too stressed to have a good night's rest. But for the ever resilient bumpkin, it just had not seemed to affect his sleep schedule. Sometimes, Sam believed there to be something wrong with himself. But if he was getting his 8 hours and waking up before dawn, as he would back home, then he was not going to be the guy to complain. Whatever kept him healthy, he supposed. On a normal morning, the young mutant would engage in a Danger Room session at this hour, but he had noticed that his teammate Titan had stolen his tee time, and settled on a different time of day to fight off holograms. It being early in the morning, regardless of how much sleep he had endured the night before, Sam found himself trudging along the corridors of the Xavier Coed dorms. Surely when he got his faithful cup o Joe his body would respond with the necessary amount of energy to keep a brother smiling and gamboling across the front lawn. Having finally reached the coffee machine, which always seemed further away to Sam with his eyes half-open, he noticed shortly after resting his hand on the adjacent counter that someone else had already brewed some java. It could have been anyone, really, but he also happened to notice that they had left the lights off. The mysterious coffee brewer had either returned to their dorm room, or been antisocial enough to drink their pick me up outside. Being the friendly guy that he was, Sam had a nagging investigatory feeling, and took to the patio to search for his fellow early bird after putting java, a splash of half & half, and a handful of sugar into his way-cool coffee mug that read "I ♥ Mondays". Shortly after a few sips, the bumpkin began to feel revitalized, as if he had been injected with a hard-hitting stimulant. During this process, the weariness in his eyes and visage transformed into that of the Sam that everybody else in the Institute saw on a daily basis. Coffee just made things neater. Stepping outside in his bare foot, the faint rays of sunshine met his wife-beater and basketball shorts, just as his eyes met the body on the patio, that which unmistakingly belonged to James "Warpath" Proudstar. "Hey man, how's come I ain't the only one up this morning? Ah don't believe Ah recall you being one of the early risers 'round here." |

Max woke up in the barn, still around 30' tall. Last night he'd gotten into an argument with one of the younger students after she'd spilled grape juice all over one of his shirts. Max didn't have many shirts (clothing that both looked normal and was made of unstable molecules was hard to come by) and in his anger started to grow. Luckily he'd been outside so he didn't break anything, but Max wasn't able to calm down before he wanted to go to bed. Therefore, he simply went to sleep in the makeshift Giant Room in the barn. The sun hadn't quite come up yet. Growing up on an orchard in the Northwest made you an early riser. During the summer, one had to wake up in the morning as soon as possible. That way you could get as much work done in the orchard before the afternoon sun made it miserable to work. Even after all these years away from Hood River, Max still woke up early. He didn't mind. He loved the smell of the dew upon the trees. Well a deep, bellowing yawn, Max rubbed his eyes. His "room" in the barn was bare, but it still had everything he needed; a giant mattress made of hay, multiple foam pads, and a ton (almost literally) of blankets; a few lamps wired together so that they could be turned on with an over-sized switch that fit Max's giant fingers; a heater in case it got too cold; an air conditioner in case it got too hot. Honestly, Max kinda liked it in the barn. It was just a hassle more then a discomfort. Max quickly brushed off the loose hay from his clothing (he'd gone to sleep wearing his stained t-shirt and jeans) and walked out of the barn. He had to duck down to leave the door, patting one of the horses in the barn on the head very lightly. Quickly, Max crept his way to the Mansion. To those awake, it was a strange sight indeed: a 30' tall mutant actually tie-toeing his way around the lawn. Finally reaching the back patio (which he knew was usually unlocked), Max saw two people already there. James "Warpath" Proudstar and Sam "Cannonball" Guthrie. Great. Another Guthrie. Max almost said hi, but covered his mouth just in time. The larger Max was, the deeper and louder his voice was. He didn't want to wake up the rest of the Mansion. His huge feet stopping just before the patio, Max closed his eyes and concentrated on shrinking. Small. Tiny. Ant-like. Slowly, the mutant shrank down. Seconds later, he was back to his usual 6' form. "Hey." Max said, walking onto the patio. He smelled coffee, and decided that coffee might be a higher priority then changing out of his stained shirt. "There enough for a third cup?" |

Thoughts interrupted by the arrival by the melodious southern voice of his teammate, James raised a hand in greeting to the blonde man. "Morning Sam," he grunted, taking another swallow of coffee. There were not that many people that James would welcome to interrupt his solitude, but Sam was one of them. James rather liked the man. It was easy to write him off as just a country bumpkin, but James knew that he was a powerful mutant and appreciated his goofy, disarming manner. He made him laugh, which was something James needed to do more these days. Today was no exception and James found himself chuckling at Sam's bed head and t-shirt. Though he doubted he looked much more awake. "Mmm, well I haven't slept that well since..." Since he had seen his own brother go on a murderous rampage? Since finding out that it wasn't even his brother but some otherworldly person trapped in John's body who destroyed both of their lives in route to dying at the hands of SHIELD? It wasn't something that James had figured out exactly how he felt, exactly who he was mad at. He just knew that he was angry at someone and the hard feeling in his gut wouldn't seem to go away. "Well, in a long time." He finished his statement lamely, easy to see that he was holding back. The sun had just peeked over the horizon when James' enhanced hearing began to pick up the sound of footfalls. Something was coming there way and it was huge. If he was anywhere else but Xavier's he would have shifted into battle readiness instantly. But such things were commonplace at the Institute. His suspicions were confirmed as the unmistakeable figure of Max aka Giant rounded the corner and blocked off the sunrise, casting Sam and James into shadow. Only at Xavier's, James thought to himself. As the boy shrank down to his usual height, James waved him towards the kitchen. "Yeah, there's plenty in there. Help yourself. Just don't make it too much of a habit. You know that stuff can stunt your growth." The corner of James' mouth twitched slightly but he managed to keep a straight face. James stood and stretched before downing the rest of his first cup in a gulp. He flipped Max his cup. "Pour me another while you're at it." He yawned and rubbed at the dark circles underneath his eyes. It took more than one cup to get him going these days. |
