Kitty Pryde believed herself to be accomplished in far less strenuous definitions of the word. Her room back in Deerfield had been lined with ribbons and trophies, merits of achievement, praise filled report cards that her parents showed off with glee to Kitty's unending embarrassment. Because to Kitty they had never been great fetes of triumph, school had always came easy to the girl. She simply had a knack for retaining information, of doing well on tests, of being a model student. Things taught from books over desks held interest to the young Pryde and she had enjoyed learning but she had never struggled for it. When she had had her IQ tested shortly after entering JR high, just before discovering she was a mutant, it had been no surprise to anyone except for Kitty that her IQ measured that of someone who was considered a genius. Her, a genius? It seemed unfair somehow, undeserved. How and why should she have something that she didn't have to work relentlessly for? Her brilliance had never been a source of pride for Kitty Pryde, rather she viewed it much like she did her brown hair or hazel eyes, just a fact of who she was. Later on Kitty knew being smart was not a hindrance but a blessing it was when you threw in real world applications that often you ran into trouble. There were some things that Judy Blume just never prepared you for. And Kitty had learned a deep irony of life, things that came easy in a classroom still did little to prepare you for the world outside. There were several definitions of smart.

She bustled through the school, canvas bag with books and notes over her shoulder. It only made sense that with her love of teaching, the pride she carried for her education she had received here and well just her lack of anything else to do she would take on a 'mentoring' position. Those that couldn't do teach and those that could do still well... taught. Kitty hadn't given world of thought to the future, what she wanted to do when she proverbially 'grew' up. She had always imagined something like this, reaching out, inspiring others like those that had taught her had inspired her. She didn't know where exactly she would fit in the grand scheme of things but she knew she had to be a part of it somehow. She was Xaviers, it was in her blood now and it nourished her as much as it hindered her. She needed this place but she wasn't for certain how much it needed her back. Kitty knew she still had a lot to learn, the question was did Xavier's still have more to teach? Or had the X-man became comfortably in a place where she was cared for and loved, a place that she now knew as home.

Sun broke through the trees as Kitty sought out her mark. She soon found herself at an opening, in a place where the trees parted open revealing a sky so luminous it would call out to anyone. She had a pretty good idea where Jay Guthrie would be on a day like this.

"Jay Guthrie!!" she yelled out, her head searching out the blue sky for the red winged mutant.

"You got five minutes to get your red feathered butt down her or I'm getting your mother on speed dial!"

Joshua Guthrie, the winged red headed musical soon to be twenty teenager, was no genius. Academically he had always been kind of average. There were never any special awards for him, no special IQ test telling him that he was super smart. The only thing he ever seemed to do good was taking care of people, and music. Even as a little kid, when the school had those little holiday recitals, the music teachers always thought he was gifted with his voice and wanted him to some group or another, the choir club or something like that. Then as he got older and started playing a variety of instruments after his father's death, those same teachers and faculty wanted him to join some group or another, usually the school band. Josh always declined, somewhere along the lines he got it into his head that those groups for girls or sissy boys. So he just went on in school more or less doing what he needed to pass with a C-Average while he helped take care of his family. Maybe he was a genius in his own right. He was able to do something his brother couldn't (or Sam didn't try to do at least), and that was manage to help support a family, go to school, have a job, and still have enough time to do things he wanted. There had to be some reward for that eventually, right? There wasn't, just shackles of responsibility that Jay didn't mind wearing most of the time. But he didn't have those shackles anymore. His mother had finally got him to go to the institute after many years of already having his mutation. He finished up his last semester of high school here and since then he was taking a few online college courses while he stayed. And in a few days, he was going to be out of his teens officially and turn 20.

But at the moment, at this very moment, he more or less was exactly where Kitty Pryde expected him to be. In the sky free as a bird. It was his release outside of music. The quiet serenity of the wing grazing against his body, face, through his hair and feathers. At times like these he wondered why people weren't just born with wings all the time. If they could just experience this sensation things could probably be a lot better in the world.

And then some feminine yelling broke his serenity and included a threat to call mama. And that was a scary thought. So the teenager flew his 'red feathered butt' down to see who this person was who had the balls to threaten him with a call to his mom. And well, she didn't have balls in the literal sense, or at least Jay really hoped not. He flapped his way down to where he was about 5ft from his feet touching the ground. Those mighty red wings flapping along in the air to support him.

"Uh, hey Kitty...what'cha be wantin' so badly that you wanna go an' threaten me with a call to ma. You sure you ain't looking for Jeb? He's the one usually getting threats with calls home."

In descending motion with flapping wings Jay Guthrie began his return to the ground. It was a majestic sight, something Kitty had seen Warren do on a few occasions but it still in its own way demanded appreciation. There were several people at the school gifted with the ability of flight, but with Jay and Warren there was something all together different about it. Maybe it was years of Hebrew school still playing in her head but the imagery of angels brought a lot to mind, a lot of sentiment, a lot of emotion.

Kitty smiled, hands on her hips, as he challenged her on why she was out there demanding his presence. A simple answer with a complicated answer, but the young phaser was by definition overtly helpful and maybe just the slightest bit pushy.

"I've been around here long enough to know my Guthries, Jay. I'm actually quite fond of your mother, bet you didn't know that. I've been here a long time, started even before your brother Sam. So quite hoovering and get those feet on tera firma pal we have some work to do."

The brunette reached into her over sized canvas bag and pulled out her notebook, full of pamphlets, memos and the like.

"I want to talk to you about taking some online college courses. I've seen your transcripts Jay and there is no reason why you can't take College courses right here. Maybe it won't be the whole experience but an education is something, I mean vital. You just need a little, polishing off around the edges and the helping hand of a great tutor of which your in luck because i am such a tutor."

She did a little mock bow before getting serious again.

"I know you have your music and I know school hasn't always been a priority in your life but there is no reason you can't have that now. If your willing to apply yourself, work hard, you can do a lot more than just help save the world Jay you can save yourself. The question is, Jay Guthrie, what do you want? This whole world out there, full of endless possibilities, what do you want for you?"

Hazel eyes looked deep into his prying an answer out. In some ways it was easier to be like this, pushing others kept her from turning the mirror on herself. And Kitty Pryde believed or maybe she hoped if she could find a purpose benefiting them then it wouldn't be so hard finding one for herself.

He soon landed much as she asked. She was more or less the same age as him, a month or so older than him, least that is what he has heard around the campus. Yet she seemed older than him, much older, or at least perhaps have gone through more. She seemed like an adult, and he felt a bit like a big teenager, it upset him a bit. Why was it that she had her life in order but he didn't? She just seemed focused or had direction at least. And she knew Ma...which was scary.

"No, no I didn't know that." Jay commented back at Kitty when she made the statement. "So what you want to talk about?" He asked curious. It wasn't entirely usual for people to be actively seeking him out. He was Jay Guthrie, the quiet angelic musician. And then she brought it up.

He listened as she started talking about college, and his future. Where was she months ago? Was she like just reading his mind the past few weeks or something?

"I uh...." Jay stuttered a bit trying to figure out how to properly answer the series of questions Kitty was asking him. "Well I already signed up for some courses at the local community college, not much though..." Jay said in his defense, he knew it was a half ass attempt mostly just to keep him at the school.

"You think maybe we could talk about this over lunch or something?" The red head asked her. "You haven't eaten yet have you? I got some money from a gig I did recently it could be on me, since you've been so kind to go through the trouble of trying to help me with my future."
