Vic had recently found that reading was a pretty spiffy boredom-deterrent. He was currently on a minor addiction to the fantasy genre, and Brisingr made him happy. He’d tried to sleep, but had only managed to remain unconscious from two in the morning to six before his subconscious forced him to rise and continue his literary adventure. And what a grand adventure it was.

He was still reading, in fact, when he heard a bit of shuffling around outside his door. For a moment, Vic was confused. The only sound he normally heard outside his door were footsteps, sometimes followed by a knocking. This sounded like somebody was trying to get in. Oh, wait! Vic was getting a new roommate today. On an impulse, Vic dropped his book beside him on the bed, and climbed up on the wall, seeming to melt into it as he did.

He didn’t know the new kid, or anything about him. Vic could very well be the reason some new kid blew up half of the mansion. Or at least, he might end up forcing the kid to blow up in his face. Of course, the only response that Vic thought of was the amusing, momentarily-frightened kind. The kind where the new guy jumped about a foot in the air and uttered a girlish squeal.

Vic positioned himself just above the door, breathing lightly and still as stone. He would have his entertainment, and it would be priceless. He would laugh about it in the years to come, and tell stories to his children and grandchildren, and they would laugh as well.

With an invisible smile on his lips, Vic awaited his moment.

Keren’s first day at Xavier’s was finally drawing to a close as he approached his dorm room. After arriving at the school earlier that morning, he was treated to a tour of the grounds by a handful of friendly (and odd in some cases) students. After the grand walk through he was taken to a faculty member’s office where they filed papers, asked if he had any known allergies, and let him pick out his courses. Currently Keren was taking almost all physical classes ranging from Acrobatics to Self-Defense. The only none physical classes he was taking was Flight Training and Business. All and all Keren was enjoying his day; he got to meet interesting new people and he was looking forward to the start of classes.

As he and Kel, for the blonde was showing him to his new room, walked up the boy’s hallway Keren’s head swiveled on his neck, searching for room #M103. He hadn’t much of anything to move into his new home just yet, only a satchel containing some clothes and toiletries. That didn’t matter him at the moment, for he was too excited and nervous about meeting his roommate. Ahead of him, Mal was flying, also searching as she wove in and out of passing children’s way. She stopped at a door on the right and hovered in the air saying:

“Found it! Come on hurry up! I wonder if our roommate is already home…I do hope he tidied up. And what if there is a stench?”

“Mal.” He said aloud, completely forgetting that he was the only person aware of the bird. “You don’t even have a sense of smell…”

“I do too!” She replied, affronted”I smell what you smell.” It was a touchy subject… As Keren advanced upon the door he shuffled for his key, not remembering which pocket he put it in. When he finally found it (back left pocket) he smiled up at Kel and unlocked the door.

The room, he thought, was quite nice. Though it wasn’t the NEATEST place in the world, there were no potent smells. As Keren looked around he saw that the room was empty. Across from the door was a bed that looked as if someone had gotten out of it in a hurry, with crumpled sheets trailing the floor and an overturned book on top. Keren stepped into the room, his head turning this way and that as he soaked it all in.

“Not too shabby.” He pronounced.

It had been a long morning, but not a particularly taxing one. The walk around the school and the grounds had been pleasant enough. It was a nice day, the company wasn't bad, and Kel liked showing off his favorite places to new people and seeing their reactions. There was still plenty of places the new kids had yet to see; it was a big place, and he figured the new kids would probably rather settle in a bit before learning every inch of the grounds.

He'd left the other new student in the staff's capable hands - there was more in the way of paperworky details since he had been a surprise unlike Keren - and led the way to the dorms.

... it was a good thing that Kel couldn't hear the things Mal was saying. Honestly, just from Keren's side of things, he didn't want to hear what she was saying. He could easily answer most questions about their new roomie though some he'd leave to Vic to answer, or choose not to. They'd been friends for a while now, despite everything that had happened since they met that could have ended their friendship before it really began. And before that, they'd been roommates.

While he could have led them right to the door, Keren was focused on finding the room. Considering the room numbers were in order, it would have been a simple matter of finding it.. but he could let the boy figure that himself. He was going to have to figure out the layout of the school eventually and there might not always be someone to point out the obvious. Though the folder he'd been given had, among other things, a map, the rules, and pretty much anything else a new student would need to know upon moving into the school.

Not to shabby, Keren stated upon opening the door to his new room and getting his first good look. And, well, yeah. Considering that the rooms were meant to fit about three our four students, with just Vic and Keren there'd be plenty of spare room as long as they had it to themselves.

"... Vic's not here...?" Kel asked, halting at the door while his friend's new roomie entered the room. There was no sign of Vic, though that didn't really mean anything. He had a good eye for signs his friend left, but he also tended to point those out to him to improve his stealth so.. it was getting harder to be certain. "Oh well. Is there anything else you needed, Keren?" he asked leaning against the door frame, trying not to sound disappointed. Wasn't like they never saw each other around the mansion, living here as they did.

Vic patiently waited as Keren entered the room. He almost revealed himself, then he noticed Kel, and held his position. If Kel was here, then Vic would have to take this a bit more seriously. The blonde was pretty good at noticing Vic’s camouflage. Vic blamed this on some manner of secondary mutation on Kel’s part, rather than the fact that he did tend to forget a few things here and there. Right now, though, he hadn’t left any tells as far as he knew.

He just had to keep things this way.

Moving along the ceiling and walls, Vic moved to a portion of the wall in front of Keren. His lips tugged themselves into a smile as Vic envisioned his shenanigan in action. Rotating himself so that he could stand, the lizard-boy spoke in the deepest and most booming voice he could muster. “Who dares enter this realm?” As he spoke, he flashed what were supposed to be flame-like waves of dark and bright reds and oranges across his body, becoming visible for a few seconds, then readopting the texture and color of the wall behind him.

Even with his camouflage, Vic was certain that he was pretty easy to spot now, having revealed himself. Still, he stood there and maintained his texture with a barely discernible grin.

The longer Keren stood in his room, the more he liked it. The dorm was giving off a college feel that he relished; it was a new chapter in his life after all. This was an opportunity that he wouldn’t squander. He strolled to the nearest nightstand without junk on top and set his bag on it. My nightstand he thought as he took out his alarm clock and personalize his area with it. As he sighed contently a smile tentatively spread across his face as he turned to face Kel. He was going to share how he felt about Xavier’s so far but was interrupted, first by Mal.

“Must everything be so meaningful and esoteric with y…” but before Mal could finish teasing him, a disembodied voice rang through the room.

“Who dares enter this realm?” It said. Even as Keren heard it, he knew it sounded put on and more than a little lame, but he couldn’t help himself. He visibly jumped as rolling flames flashed in front of him. Reflexively he sent out a pulse of super heated air into the room. He’d been working on his control in Israel, and in Brooklyn while his house was being repaired, but his powers were still tied to his emotions and state of mind. Keren was red-faced as he looked in Kel’s direction to see if the blonde was ok. Keren was acting as if he just passed gas, instead of singing the bed clothes. He figured it was he who scared him anyway, though the boy seemed more sensible than that. Embarrassment blinded the novice mutant to the shimmering form suspended in front of him.

Oh... well. It looked like he was wrong.

The blond put a hand to his face in a classic pose called 'smacking yourself in the face because someone's being an idiot.' Kelrian wasn't sure whether he was amused or annoyed with the little prank, as it began. Of course he recognized the voice, but he hadn't expected Vic to use his camouflage like that. Well, quite like that. It was cool, actually, but hopefully it wouldn't freak out the new student.

While he knew a little about Keren's powers, he didn't know ... well enough to actually matter. Kel certainly hadn't expected him to be jumpy with them either, though there were plenty who were to start with. Maybe if he had, he'd have been more prepared for the sudden heat. Or at least would've moved back faster.

"What the hell, Kere-" he started, stopping speaking abruptly, because he realized something important. His jeans were merely singed like the relatively distant bedding, being of more durable material, but his shirt was pretty much the opposite of heat-resistant. Half smoldery and half melty from the blast of heat, it was not an ingredient for a happy Kel. The blond grimaced. Not so much because of pain, which had faded instantly, but because he'd liked the shirt.

"Vic... could I borrow a shirt?" he asked the camouflaged teenager, glancing where he was last. Shadow, shadow.. there it was. He glanced up to eye level. And a thought occurred to him. How close was he to Keren, how intense had the outburst been? His expression shifted to something almost blank. "Are you okay?"

Vic’s smile didn’t last very long. Suddenly on autopilot, Vic leapt away, landing on his bed against the wall. His camouflage had been lost, returning Vic to his default green, with a few slowly darkening spots noting minor burns on his face and arms. Yes, he had thought of the possibility that he might accidentally prompt the kid to blow something up, but in his entire prankster career he hadn’t actually had anybody blow something up. Abruptly, he noticed the smell of burning, and noticed the damaged sheets. Spotting a few places that were still smoldering, he reached out and patted them into ash.

“I’m sorry.” He finally spoke, “I didn’t think that one through very well.” Keren seemed fine, but Vic could see that Kel had been caught in the burst. He’d apparently healed already from what were probably minor injuries, but that didn’t seem to fully register in Vic’s head because regardless, he asked, “You okay?”

The fact that Kel’s shirt had been rendered unusable had been lost on Vic until he asked for one. Getting to his feet, Vic sifted through until he found one with a fire hazard symbol on it. After he handed it to Kel, he turned to Keren with a hand outstretched; an attempt to start over. “My name’s Vic.”

When he turned back to face Kel, Keren was both shocked and scared. Immediately he thought he’s burned the blonde mutant very severely, but the only thing damaged was his t-shirt, which laid in smoldering strips. It was like the burn were there one second, and completely gone the next. Keren’s confusion kept the panic at bay for a few moments, but Kel looked more annoyed than injured. Mal flapped around the room in a tizzy. She was still invisible as she inspected the boy, check to make sure he was ok.

“Uh, I am sooo sorry! Are you alright!? I didn’t mean to hurt you? Are you burned? I was just surprised, was that you?” Keren’s apologies and questions all ran together, but Kel was more concerned with the air, for he was asking if it was alright. No not the air, Keren finally focused and detected a visual disturbance in the middle of the room. In his peripheral vision a green boy popped out of nowhere, bouncing on the bed in shock. Again, already frazzled, Keren jumped, this time with no heat pulse. The boy had a giant scaly arm and non-severe scorch marks on his face. The boy introduced himself as Vic, and Kel asked for a shirt.

The level of embarrassment Keren was feeling was indescribable to him. He was wishing he had more control over himself, and he suddenly felt dangerous. “It could have been a lot worse.” Said Mal. “We really need to get a hold of this. But for now relax, and be glad no one was hurt.” Keren looked at the two boys in turn, he face red with mortification.

“I am so sorry! Honestly I didn’t mean to.” Vic threw Kel a t-shirt and stuck out a green hand. Keren almost didn’t take it, but the panic was wearing off. He placed a shaky hand into his palm and shook. “Uh, my name is Keren. Do you need to go to a nurse or something…?”

Kelrian probably should have been reassuring Keren that he was fine. He was just a little distracted though, just waving him off. The blond wanted to make sure Vic wasn't caught in the blast before fussing over his less than severe problems.

Vic reappeared and Kel realized he'd been looking in the wrong spot. Close, but he definitely had been staring at the wall. Yeah. Not important. A glance at Vic, he didn't really seem hurt... and he wasn't acting like he was hurt... so when Vic handed him the shirt [which the regen took with a mumbled thanks], Kel focused on getting the melty t-shirt off. It wasn't easy. It was still hot, and... parts seemed sorta burnt onto him. He turned away from the others slightly while getting what he could off, and tugged Vic's shirt on. Maybe Avery could help him deal with that mess later, it wasn't like it hurt.

The new roommates were introducing themselves. The focus was off him... which allowed him to check the others out more carefully. Keren didn't seem affected by the outburst. Except severe embarrassment. Vic however...

Kel had been wrong. His friend had gotten some burns. They didn't look too bad, but still. Kelrian grimaced. "I'll get the first aid kit... no need to rush to the infirmary but should still get that taken care of.." he said, walking out of the room. A few doors down, the nearest bathroom which sure enough had a first aid kit - with burn cream and band aids and stuff - and he was back in mere moments. Yeah you just had to know where this stuff was here.

He wasn't sure what to say to Keren about this. He obviously needed some training with his powers and it was unnecessary to state the obvious. "I'm fine, Keren, I'm a regen," he said belatedly, his description of his powers disinterested. He didn't really care his powers weren't flashy.. "Basically, I heal fast."

Sitting on his friend's bed, he waved Vic over. "So, do you feel like me dragging you down to the infirmary, or putting up with some band aids for now?" It was one or the other. If Vic wasn't going down to get patched up by Avery or Dr. McCoy his burns were going to get smothered with the burn stuff and bandaged.

As Kel went about changing shirts, Vic made a conscious effort not to watch. He didn't want to make Kel uncomfortable, and he wasn't sure he could help with picking off the melted shirt without causing further pain and injury. Best to let Kel do what he did, and heal. Vic's untrained and nervous hands would likely do more harm than good.

Still, he moved away from his new roommate to search for something helpful. He thought he had Vaseline around, but it was apparently playing hide-and-seek, even at the most inappropriate of moments. He was in the second drawer when Kel pointed out the minor burns he himself had sustained. They hadn't even crossed his mind, so fully had Vic concerned himself with handling the situation he'd created.

"First Aid kit? It's not that bad..." Vic stated, but Kel had already gone before he finished. Responding to Keren, Vic shook his head. "It's really not your fault. I knew you were new, and I just went ahead anyways." A rather stupid decision, Vic had to admit. Surprise a mutant who may have little to no control over abilities that may be highly destructive. That was somewhere in the top five things on most sane people's 'do not' lists.

"Besides, with my catlike reflexes and ninja skills, anybody would've had the same response. Except Mr. Summers. My training is still incomplete."

Kel returned, and Vic could see that his friend was serious. Something in his eye said 'Yes, I will indeed drag you all the way to the infirmary if you refuse to comply.' So Vic complied.

"Dr. McCoy would heckle me, I think." Anole considered out loud. "Band-aids, it is." Anole sat back on the bed, legs crossed under him, facing Kel.

When Keren made to approach Kel, he was quickly waved away. He hadn’t meant for this to happen, but the blond was (very) obviously annoyed with him. Keren stood rooted to his spot, feeling a little more than dejected as Kel turned his back to him. Vic had just handed him a shirt, and Kel busied himself with switching it with his ruined one. The unnerved mutant would not have noticed Kel’s stomach were it not for the birdy on his shoulder.

“His shirt melted inside of his torso.” She said. “I think he is trying to hide it from you…” At first that made no sense to Keren. If anything the shirt would’ve melted on him, but he didn’t act like he was burned or hurt in anyway. Keren reflected on the events that transpired a few moments ago, when he thought he saw Kel get burned. “Are you sure you aren’t hurt?” he said to the room at large, but with furtive glances to and fro. Both mutants said they weren’t, and Vic tried to take the blame for their little mishap.

After, rather awkwardly, tugging on Vic’s shirt Kel left to find a first aid kit. "It's really not your fault. I knew you were new, and I just went ahead anyways." He was saying while they were alone. Keren understood that he was attempting to be reassuring, but it only made him feel worse. This time, however, Keren was only feeling sorry for himself. He hated that everyone would have to walk on eggshells around him. Vic was only trying to be fun, doing what teenagers did, and Keren had to come along and ruin it. Besides, with my catlike reflexes and ninja skills, anybody would've had the same response. Except Mr. Summers. My training is still incomplete." Yea, thought Keren bitterly, anybody would have set the bed clothes alight.

“Stop that,” Mal said simply. “I won’t have you dwelling.” Kel returned with the first aid kit and took out some ointment and bandages. As he did this, he explained his mutation…healing. So Keren had burned him as badly as he thought; only it healed right away. It dawned on him just how dangerous, and lucky he was.

“So your shirt did melt inside you! Why are you just sitting there? Doesn’t it hurt!?”

“Shh, Keren obviously the boy is fine. Hush now.” Said Mal, but he didn’t heed her. The last time his powers got out of hand, two people died. And this time someone could’ve sustained permanent damage, all from being startled.

“But they could’ve been burned badly, one of them was!” He forgot to reply to the bird silently. “Hurry up with that!” he snapped at Kel, simultaneously snatching the ointment from his hands. “We can do this on the way over.”

'For now' meant that Vic would be dragged down to the infirmary anyway, but the regen's friend seemed not to realize what he'd meant. He shrugged a little at the comment about Dr. McCoy heckling him. He wouldn't be surprised, but there wasn't really any fault in this. Just a mix of good and bad luck.

Vic sat beside him, and Kel was ready to help him apply some of the ointment. However, he paused a moment because he knew that it was probably going to be cold and would most certainly hurt. But it meant that the burn would heal faster and wouldn't get infected or anything, so he was going to do it anyway regardless of squeamishness.

“So your shirt did melt inside you! Why are you just sitting there? Doesn’t it hurt!?”

Kelrian just stared at him for a moment. How did he... never mind that. The blond was a little embarrassed for being found out but that was it. "No, its already healed, and-"

“But they could’ve been burned badly, one of them was!” Keren continued. That was a little confusing, but then Kel remembered him introducing Mal. That was who he had to be talking to, right? Then to Kel, he snapped, “Hurry up with that! We can do this on the way over.”

Honestly Kel was startled; he didn't move. He was still more concerned about Vic. Even minor burns really hurt. "I'm fine, and yes I was going to go down to the infirmary to see about getting the burnt plastic off.. I'm not sure what you meant about it being melted inside.. its just like.. superglue." Only a little too hot, but he wasn't saying that. It wasn't like it was that melty anymore, and underneath he was healed. Except it was going to hurt like hell getting that burned on plastic off.

Then he did get up. Keren was obviously really upset. He walked over to him and put a hand on the boy's shoulder. "Its okay. This is nothing compared to what happens in my training sessions let alone anything actually serious. I appreciate your concern though." He smiled reassuringly. "You need control, but everyone needs to learn control when they first come here. That's what we're here for."

Keren said something about Kel’s shirt melting inside him, and Vic’s focus immediately shifted over to his friend. Kel wouldn’t have hidden such an injury, he didn’t think. If it was that serious, Vic was sure that Kel would’ve worried about that more than the minor burns that he himself had sustained. Or maybe he wouldn’t have. Regardless, Vic was now unconcerned with his own minor injuries. “Wait, that stuff melted inside you?” He wasn’t entirely sure how Keren knew it, but this was a development that required Vic’s attention.

His shirt covered the burns, so Vic couldn’t see them. Tugging the ointment out of Keren’s hand, Vic started smearing it on his burns, wincing a little at the sting and possibly missing spots in his urgency. Once he was done, he capped the ointment and returned his attention to Kel.

“There, I’m fine. Now, you sure you're okay?” This needed to get figured out, and Vic wasn’t about to let Kel nurse serious injuries because he’d been too distracted by a few minor burns.

Keren still seemed on the verge of hyperventilation, and so Vic tried again to calm him. “Really, try to relax. Nobody's seriously hurt; It's just a few burns. No reason to get overly excited."

“You really are reacting ridiculously dear, you need to calm down. Center yourself.” Both boys looked utterly bewildered. Keren knew he was overreacting but when things like this happened, he was always reminded of how dangerous he could be. However, it was more than that for it also reminded him of some of the mistakes he has made. When he thought of those, he often lost control of his emotions. The first few months in Israel Keren often had to be isolated. It was hell, but he made it through with no causalities. Then he comes here, someone pranks him and he blows up the place.

Over the years, the two natured mutant had grown quite efficient in the “lock it away deep, deep down and cover it with feigned forgetfulness” department. Repressing the past, however, was extremely difficult when it kept popping up at the most inopportune times. But thinking about that wouldn’t solve the problem at hand. Taking deep and exaggerated breaths, Keren slowed his heart rate and (as evenly as possible) addressed the room:

“Ok…ok I am sorry for freaking out on you.” The burn ointment was wrenched out of his hands. “So it didn’t melt inside…but you definitely heal with gunk in your abdomen.” To his side, Vic was making faces at the stinging pain as he lathered the medicine on his green skin. “Honestly if you both just let me escort you to the school nursed I could stop panicking.”

They were all standing now, and Keren guiltily noticed how everyone was sudden reassuring him when it should have been the other way around. “I know you said it didn’t hurt, but it can’t be comfortable being plastered with all that material. And you need to get someone with experience to bandage those. Just ointment won’t do” Bossy mode was better than crazy mode he decided. He would have to do something to make up for this.

When Vic questioned him about what Keren had said, he responded with something that sounded like 'not exactly' mumbled under his breath. The regen was a bit embarrassed with the focus on his... well, not injury anymore, perhaps predicament would be a better word for his situation. After all, he wasn't hurt. It was just uncomfortable and something that had to be dealt with. That is if his body didn't reject the foreign substance on its own. That had happened soon after any attempted piercings, pretty quickly, and he wouldn't have been surprised if that was normal for him. Not that he was going to wait for his body to rid itself of the ruined fabric.

Despite his discomfort with the situation he smiled at the repeated question, was he okay. "I am, really. It'd take a lot worse than that for something not to heal instantly.." or that same level of heat, for an extended period of time. Something to seriously not think about, because does one really want to think about roasting alive, yet healing, for some indeterminate period of time?

"No need to apologize... its a pretty normal reaction I think," Kel said to Keren, grimacing at the way the teenager put his predicament. At least Vic was taking care of the burns. Those didn't need to get infected.

"I was going to go down there anyway, even though its not entirely necessary..." he said grudgingly. He didn't like being down there, even though he liked both Dr. McCoy and Avery. Spent way too much time there a few years back, when his powers had decided to fail him at a very bad time...

"If you want to come along, I don't mind. Vic?" Kel glanced at his friend. While he knew that his friend didn't want to head down there, and would have more excuse not to go what with the ointment... "If I'm going you're coming with me," he said with a half smile.
