Late morning: August, 8th: All he wanted was to spend time alone, or did he want to unload his woes onto someone? Either way, Keren was never truly alone, and he always had someone to talk to. For some reason that wasn’t enough at the moment. Confliction seemed to be the theme of this day. For instance, Keren’s mood was…damp to say the least, but the sun insisted upon blazing a cheerful globe in the clear sky. He couldn’t decide if the universe was mocking him or not. Mal, for one, was trying to enjoy the day but even her feathers seemed drab in the sun’s light. She flew with abandon, as if trying to escape Keren’s worries. Making herself corporeal and chasing other birds. Of course, he could sense this within her, which only soured his mood further. “You don’t have to follow me if I annoy you so much!” he snapped. But she didn’t answer, opting for a loopty-lou instead. The source of this foul mood was his Aunt’s condition. It seemed that the cybernetics in her arm didn’t take….again. She was in great pain, something to do with the “nerve couplings” or whatever. Keren didn’t understand the jargon, but it didn’t matter. Rachel’s pain was his fault. If she hadn’t felt the need to protect him they never would’ve crashed in Egypt. This was the fourth time her body has rejected the mechanics in her arm, and he doubted it would ever take. SHIELD would continue to try of course, especially since she was officially a part of their roster. A precog would invaluable to them. This was yet another source of ambivalence. Keren was grateful of all the care SHIELD was putting into his Aunt, but he was nervous of their true intentions. He continued to run through the forest, in an attempt to burn off all of his anxious energy. He tried to concentrate on his run, leaping over fallen logs and darting through branches. It would work for a few steps, but then his worries would return. Step, step, why does the pain affect Aunt Rachel’s powers negatively? step, step, how are the twins handling this? step, step, when will SHIELD ask for a favor in return? As usual Keren was letting his dark emotions consumed him. He could feel all his concerns around him, like wading through gelatin. This was dangerous for him, since his powers were directly related to his feelings. Mal however was focused on the form in the distance. A girl was flying about, coming in their direction fast…blonde hair blazing in the crisp morning light. The raven didn’t think anything of it, of course, for there were lots of students who flew at Xavier’s. “Maybe I should just head back to campus.” Said Keren breathily in defeat. “I want to call Aunt Rachel anyway, and the jog isn’t giving me the ‘desired effect’.” He was stopped on the pathway hunch over with his hands on his knees. He was tired, and wanted a shower. The woodland smells coursed through his nose as he tried to catch his breath. Again he tried to concentrate on something outside of himself, this time his intake of breath, and the various noises around him. It had been a year and a half and they were still feeling the trauma of Apocalypse. Rachel would feel it forever, and all because of h…. “Clearly it is going to take more than a hot shower for you to shut up.” Mal interjected, venom coursing through her words. “What you need is a fistful of Lexapro.” |

Empathic Metamorph / Flight / Concussive Blasts
|
It was one of those days where it was just impossible to stay inside, although Meggan often found it impossible to stay inside anyway. The air felt nice and cool as she rose up into the air against her bare arms, face and feet as she flew, a bag slung over one shoulder that had her drama book and art book and a few pens, pencils and of course snacks in. Snacks were very important. The bag was also roomy, in case she found anything pretty while she was in the woods such as a nice stone or feathers, that she could take inside to her room, to remind her of the woods when she couldn’t go out. Her dorm room occasionally looked more like a woodland cabin than a room in a school, but she liked it that way and Doreen didn’t seem to mind and of course Monkey Joe loved it. Rising above the trees, she twirled a little in the air, pushing higher before dipping down, spinning around and around, holding her arms out. Her bag nearly fell and Meggan stumbled in mid-air to catch it, slowing down a bit. It was safe to fly above the school, as there was no one about but people who went there and she could pass unnoticed, so she knew every patch of the area, having flown around most of it, usually with Melody. But today was a quiet day, or so she had decided anyway, and she was going to do some drawing and maybe some reading, which was why she had her drama book. She still struggled with a lot of the words, but Mister Wagner had marked out some easier speeches for her to learn and practise and she worked on those when she didn’t have any other school work to do. As the young metamorph sailed over the trees, she felt a sudden sinking sensation in the pit of her tummy and it was like something had hid her, hard, something unpleasant. She was all…Sad and lonely and worried and…Was she lonely? It was strange, that sort of feeling where you told everyone to go away but you didn’t really mean it, as you wanted to see if they’d be nice and stay….Meggan’s lip wobbled slightly and she looked around, spotting one of the other students on the path that snaked through the trees, down on the ground below her. Oh… Changing her direction, she flew towards the ground, her bare feet silently hitting the grass by the side of the path, as it was much easier to land on, and she quietly trotted up behind him, a nervous, but genuine smile on her elfin face. “Um…Hullo? Are you alright there?” she asked in her lilting voice then rummaged in her bag, pulling out a rather squashed Milky Way. “I sort of felt that you sort of felt like you might want some chocolate…It’s only a tiny bit melted,” her smile widened in her face as she tried to block out the feelings that were coming off him in conflicted waves. “Would you like to talk about it?” |

“A chibi Galadriel is coming up behind you.” Mal was circling down now, wanting to see firsthand what was going on. Keren uncurled his back and haphazardly slathered a smile on his face. The blonde girl before him seemed to mirror him, she was also smiling but it was tempered with discomfort. Her bare feet were light upon the path as she approached, simultaneously digging in her bag for something. Having just landed her hair was looking rather disheveled; it gave Keren the impression of a lion’s mane. He didn’t recognize her, not that he should, for he was still new and the mansion was a big place. As she spoke she brandished a squashed candy bar. It became clear that she wanted to help Keren sort out his issues, and all at once Keren felt confused and violated. Is she a telepath or something? he thought to himself did she invade my privacy?. The smile on his face began to feel even phonier and he dropped it. He stared at the girl, wishing she would explain herself further, but instead she looked at him with innocent eyes and asked if he wanted to talk about it. That was a question he’d asked himself only a few moments ago, and he decided that he didn’t want to ‘talk about it’. Forgetting about it sounded better at the moment. “Don’t be rude dear.” Said Mal as she landed on his shoulder. “Answer the child.” “No not especially, it really is no big deal.” He took the chocolate she was wielding, but didn’t open it. “I’m Keren by the way; I just moved slash enrolled here…thanks for the candy…” He lowered his gaze, as his voice trailed off. “Curious child…” Mal said. She flapped her wings and flew toward the girl, her silver beak centimeters from her nose. Keren’s heart raced as the bird’s feathers shivered into reality. He didn’t know what to think, his jaw hung loose a bit while Mal continued. “What are you?” Keren wanted to forget about his woes, and he got his wish. There was no room for anything but marvel at Mal’s actions. The sensation he was feeling of a stranger looking at his Mal’ach was unsettling. “I…um…well.” This girl was only the second nonfamily member to see Mal. And it took Sabra a year. Clearly the bird was out of her mind. “well that there is Mal. A…uh…guardian angel of sorts. And yes, she is always this uncouth.” |

Empathic Metamorph / Flight / Concussive Blasts

For a minute, Meggan wondered if she had said the wrong thing. Such was her desire to help other people and make them smile, she occasionally forgot that not everyone liked talking or having their feelings read, even if it was perfectly by accident, like it usually was with her. Sometimes she just couldn’t help but feel what other people were, especially in such a big school with so many emotions swirling around. He took the bar and just held it, saying whatever was the problem wasn’t a big deal and the fey girl bit her lip. “Well…If you would like to talk, then I really wouldn’t mind…I’m Meggan,” she grinned as he introduced himself to her, returning the gesture. “I’ve been at the school for, oh, a year and a half it must be now…” she stared off into space as she worked it out in her head, before giving herself a little shake and looked back at him properly. “I’m sure you’ll get settled in and feel at home very soon. The school is nice like that, because almost everyone is friendly, which helps a lot. I was very nervous when I came here, I wasn’t used to people, but I’m okay now. If you would like to talk I really don’t mind listening…” she explained with an endearing smile, hoping to make him feel a little better. He could be feeling nervous and unhappy about being new…Oh, yes, she should probably explain. “I can tell what people are feeling, a little bit like Missus Grey-Summers reads peoples minds, but I just tell how they’re feeling. Oh, and I change my shape as well. And fly, but you saw me flying already…” Meggan trailed off, about to veer on to another subject when a bird appeared, right in her face and started to talk to her. Meggan’s blue eyes turned wide with amazement as she stared, open mouthed, then her face blossomed into the biggest grin and she started to laugh in wonderment at what she was seeing. “I – I – are you really an angel?” she gasped, still giggling, a glow about her cheeks. She felt she was seeing something special, something different. Her hand went back into her bag and she started to scrabble around. “Um, would you like something to eat too? I might have some crackers…I think you could eat a cracker? Because I don’t imagine that birds like chocolate very much…” “Mal. That’s a nice name and I don’t think she’s uncouth…” Meggan hazarded, hoping she was thinking uncouth meant what she was thinking it did. She wasn’t so good with words still, after all. The blonde pulled a packet of pretzels out of her bag and held it up towards the bird, still entranced by its sudden appearance and how it spoke. She had seen all sorts of things while being at the school but this was really one of the best things. It was like something out of Narnia, talking birds… “It’s very nice to meet you, Mal. I’m Meggan.” |

Suddenly Keren felt bad at the sight of the elf girl’s face. His confusion/revulsion must have been apparent for the girl looked taken aback. Unsure, she introduced herself as Meggan and when Keren did the same she gained more confidence. In a whirl she was talking on all sorts of subjects, all the while flashing her innocent smile. Finally, she explained herself; Meggan wasn’t a telepath apparently, but an Empath. That was something new. So she can feel what I am feeling? he thought silently, still slightly creeped-out. After finishing his inner question, Mal’s voice rang an answer in his mind: Yea, we probably should get her away from you…we don’t need you damaging Xavier’s resident Disney Princess. “That is really interesting, a shapeshifter huh? So maybe I’ve already met you?” He gave a feeble smile, which was precisely when Mal chose to revealed herself. As stated before, the sensation was odd. It wasn’t painful or pleasant; only vulnerable. Like the feeling one gets while taking a leap of faith. Mal flapped around the girl head, much like a Hummingbird flitting around a particularly juicy flower. The two were utterly entranced with one another, and Keren was all but forgotten. Mal wanted Meggan to turn into a slobbering dragon, and Meggan wanted to feed Mal. After diving yet again into her oversized bag, Meggan came back up with crackers. Keren wondered if that bag ever belonged to Mary Poppins. She is going to make a good grandmother one day. thought Keren randomly. He was remembering his own grandmother, and the way she was always stocked with snack and sweets. During temple Keren would sneak into her purse for a candy, and she would pretend not to notice. ----------------- Mal flew around the young girl's head in fascination. First impressions to the black bird were everything; it was easy for her to sniff out good people from the bad. In truth it was a talent available to anyone with instinct or intuition, but often times the human brain (always over thinking) would get in the way. Time and time again people try to fool themselves into thinking someone was something that they weren’t, but Mal didn’t have this problem…she wasn’t human. The first impression Meggan gave was an excellent one. “Yes I am an angel…Heaven Sent from Yahweh himself.” She flew in closer and in a mock whisper said. “Keren here can’t take care of himself and God felt bad for making a defective.” Ignoring Keren’s venomous thoughts Mal continued. “And the only thing I eat is knowledge dear. My charge is looking a bit peeky though.” She got nearer to the girl and, rather pushily, raised a lock of blonde hair. “Were you born an elf, or is it a fashion statement?” True to form, Mal disregarded Keren’s audible objections as she inspected Meggan’s ear. |

The boy gave a little smile as she explained her powers and asked if might have already met her, which Meggan gave a small laugh at, the smile still wide across her face. “I’m very sorry but we haven’t, I’d remember you! You have nice eyes,” the elfin girl grinned a bit wider, her expression sincere. She wasn’t always good with names but she remembered faces very well and she would certainly have remembered the bird…not everyone had a guardian angel after all! The bird told her she was sent by Yah….someone Meggan wasn’t sure she knew, but that made her feel like she believed Mal even more. The story about being sent to look after Keren was pretty and it gave the fey girl a warm feeling deep inside, bringing a subtle glow to her cheeks as the bird continued to flit around her head. “Oh. Well I don’t really know very much so I think you might as well have the pretzels,” she grinned, a little embarrassed, but opened up the bag and dug out a pretzel, nibbling on it before holding it out to Keren as suggested, despite the fact the Milky Way remained unopened in his hands. “Oh, although, did you know in England, those are Mars bars, sort of, only not as sweet. I think that counts as knowledge…” Her words trailed off into a giggle as Mal gently took hold of some of her hair in her beak and lifted it up to inspect her delicately pointed ears. The girl continued to laugh as Mal asked her question and Meggan shook her head. “Oh no, neither really…When I was born it was winter and the caravan was stuck in the snow and it was ever so cold. Mum said how when I was just born I grew a furry coat in seconds, so I wouldn’t get cold. I couldn’t really control my changing when I was very little. My ears are pointy because…Well it feels like they should be cause even though I’m a mutant people always thought I was a fairy or something so when I look like this, my ears are pointy. I like it though, its pretty I think…” There was a moments pause as she continued to watch Mal, before taking a breath and looking at Keren, a more serious look on her face than before. “Um, well, if you would like to talk about whatever was making you sad I really don’t mind. Talking about things sometimes helps you feel a little bit better or you could tell Missus Grey-Summers. She’ll listen to anyone, she’s ever so kind and helpful.” |

The look on Meggan’s face was nothing short of wonder. Clearly she believed all the garbage Mal was selling. The bird rambled on about heaven and god, all of which were lies. More often than not Mal was great to have around, but everyone once and again she was more trouble than she was worth. The thrill of being seen and conversing with people seemed to diminish her vocal filter. “Mal please stop lying!” Keren scolded. “We don’t really know what Mal is, but I am positive she wasn’t sent by Yahweh…You can’t always listen to her Meggan, she fancies herself a comedian.” But the blonde girl was too busy with a bag of pretzels, brandishing them toward Keren. Sighing, he took the crinkly bag and added it to his uneaten candy bar. Keren was awful at placing accents, so when he heard the girl speak for the first time he didn’t presume to know where she came from, but apparently she hailed from England. “We had Mekupelet chocolate in Israel. They were good, but I definitely missed American candy.” In fact, Keren hadn’t eaten anything kosher since returning home, and he planned on keeping it that way. “I guess I should explain, I lived over there with family for a few years. I moved back stateside about a year and a half ago.” Again Mal distracted the girl, brazenly pulling her hair. It was all very odd, for her to be so enamored. At once Keren felt a dark sense of jealousy and anxiety. Mal was his after all, and what if she left him? It was an agonizing feeling that happened naturally. An example being if she flew too far away; the pain wouldn’t be physical, but the anxiety would threaten to tear his heart in two. It would feel as if his body would implode in to nothing if she flew so much as an inch further. If someone were to ask Keren to explain this sensation aloud, he would be at a loss of words. As it were, Mal was only a few feet away and yet it hurt for her to be so focused on someone else. Keren watched as Mal gently let go of Meggan’s hair, and flapped her way back to him. As she landed on his head she said softly. “Go on and talk to the girl, it can’t hurt. And eat your chocolate…I meant it when I said you are looking peeky.” Keren’s heart slowed his bird’s touch, and her voice comforted him. He opened the chocolate bar and asked: “Can we go somewhere more comfortable?” ----------------- “Ooo a fairy!” Mal exclaimed, a chuckle in her voice. Being noticed by a person other than Keren was a wonderful feeling for the raven. She was elated at having a chance to speak with a different being, she loved Keren unlike anything or anyone else in the world…but the boy was often very trying. “A fur coat!? Can you still do it?” she asked, her silver beak clicking excitedly. In the back of Mal’s mind began a sort of tugging sensation. It was like she was tied to a moving tank, and trying to fly in the opposite direction. She looked up and toward Keren, and she knew the feeling was him beckoning to her. His ache washed over her, and she understood. He was only a few wing pumps away, and when she landed atop his head his ache vanished and took the pressure in her mind with it. Still, Mal wasn’t quite ready to see her specimen go, so she encouraged him to talk to her. After all, maybe she can convince Meggan to turn into a unicorn! |

“Oh…” Meggan looked a little disappointed as Keren informed her that Mal wasn’t really telling the truth, but the bird was far too interesting and special to be mad at about it. It wasn’t a bad lie…well, not really anyway, and it didn’t seem that Mal was making fun of her, so the little empath didn’t mind so much. “I actually miss the sweets back home…” she commented in her lilting tone as she remembered the various treats she was occasionally allowed. “They were sweeter, well, most of them. I don’t like twizzlers very much, they taste like wax,” Meg crinkled her nose up with a little grin, her expression changing as he said about how he had moved and she pushed her hair back behind her ears, listening curiously as he spoke. “Do you miss them very much? My clan lost me. The X-men found me and I’ve lived here since…I don’t know if I’ll ever see them again,” for a moment, her shape blurred, colours and features darkening and turning dull as she almost retreated into the sorry, shabby little batlike shape she often took when she was sad or afraid. But, she had stopped to cheer Keren up and not be sad herself so the girl concentrated hard at keeping her sorrow at bay, her focus turning to Mal who seemed excited about her fur and Meggan smiled dreamily at the bird, nodding her fair head. “Oh, of course I can. I can turn into lots of various things, it’s called being a metamorph…which is basically shapeshifting but I can do shapes and things that some shapeshifters can’t do…The fur is a little bit itchy sometimes though,” she explained and was about to ask if she should change to show her, when the bird returned to Keren and then vanished. The girl blinked her blue eyes in surprise, her mouth hanging open for a second, as Mal had disappeared almost as abruptly as she had appeared. Her disappointment was forgotten for a second as the boy asked if they should go somewhere else. “Oh, if you like. I was only going to do some reading or drawing. There are lots of lovely spots out here you see, and I know most of them…This way!” Meggan looked around the path for a moment, working out where everything was, as she was used to seeing the forest from the air, then started to walk towards a spot between the trees that lined the path, taking a tiny trail through the trees, expertly making her way through the half hidden path until after about ten minutes, they came out in a small, nature made clearing with a number of large mossy boulders and a grassy knoll, surrounded by the trees, one of which was bowing with age, several of its ancient branches hanging low. Dropping her bag down on one of the lower boulders, Meggan scrambled up and took a seat on the one above it. “Here we are! It’s nice, isn’t it?” she grinned widely with a slightly proud expression on her soft face. |

“Now look what you did…you made her sad.” Keren felt confident in talking to Mal aloud, now that the cat was out of the bag. Meggan looked a bit hurt when Keren called Mal out on her lying. “She really didn’t mean anything by it, only joking.” The black bird hadn’t thought the girl would take her so seriously, otherwise she wouldn’t have fibbed. The flaxen girl’s disappointed expression made her feel a bit guilty. “Anyhow, she apologizes for leading you on.” He finished. “Do you miss them very much? she asked, in regards to his family. “Actually, they moved back with me and live in Brooklyn now. I try to visit them often. My parents are gone though…dead.” And he left it that, simply because he wasn’t sure at all if he missed them. Listening as the girl explained a bit about her past, Keren noted how very forthcoming she was. Her history flowed easily and, by the looks of it, she was saddening herself. “Yes well, I am sure you have a new family out of the people here.” He worked a smile onto his face and tried to make it genuine. As they strode along the forest Keren ate his flattened candy bar. The blonde head in front of him looked to and fro as Meggan led the way, dodging fallen logs and jutting boulders. Finally they took a path he hadn’t noticed before and arrived at the grassy clearing. “Yes it is very good, I bet you find all kind of crannies such as this.” He replied, adding “With your flying and all.” to his statement. Finding a good cushy spot, he lounged along the ground. As he pocketed his emptied candy wrapper, Keren noted how strangely the day had turned out. He certainly wouldn’t have guessed that he’d end up voiding all his problems onto a girl who looked suspiciously like an elf. In fact the effect was somehow magnified by the old trees, moss covered stones, and green hills. It was as if he’d been transported to Narnia. Under normal circumstances, Keren would not have been so free with his words, but Mal’s little display encouraged him. Still, he didn’t divulge every detail. “I supposed it started a year and a half ago…when all of those mutants tried killing everyone.”He opened the bag of pretzels, took a few, and offered some to Meggan. “I was passing through Egypt when an earthquake hit, my Aunt Rachel lost her arm in the resulting crash. Since then we’ve gotten it fixed, but the technology used isn’t taking. I am just scared that she will have lost a limb because of my actions. It is stupid and pointless to think that way I know, but I can’t help but worry about her and the twins.” |

A smile crossed her face as Keren explained that Mal had only been teasing, as she was sure the bird had only been doing it in a nice way. She didn’t get the sort of feeling from either of the two that would mean she was being mean to her. Very occasionally some people had teased her a little because she didn’t know so much and said some things that weren’t quite true but well, the blonde girl thought they were just very silly and that she was lucky to have a nice roommate like Doreen, who’d never dream of doing such a thing. “Oh, that’s nice!” she brightened up as he said his family now lived in Brooklyn, which was really quite a lot closer than living in another country, but her face fell as he said about his parents. “Oh…I’m very sorry,” stopping for a moment she felt a little awkward, getting the impulse to take hold of his hand or to throw her small arms around him in a big affectionate hug, but apparently not everyone liked that, so she refrained and instead carried on her meandering way down the path. The smile came back as he said how she must have a family here. “Oh, yes, it is like having a new clan. And you’ll feel like you’re right at home with another family here as well, if you stay for a little bit longer. People look after each other here – well, mostly! Some people do fight but I think that’s normal. It is on the telly anyway!” Her blonde head bounced as she skipped along, her bare feet barely touching the ground. Sunlight came through the trees, catching her pale blonde hair and making it shine, forgiving the fact that it was a messy tangle that could likely do with a good brush. “Oh I find all sorts! I don’t always fly though, sometimes I come out with Doreen and Monkey Joe as well and we go exploring! She can talk to squirrels and they tell her all sorts of interesting things…Like…well, squirrely things. But it is very interesting.” As they settled down at the spot she had led them to, Meggan took in deep breaths of the air, looking up to the sky for a few moments, watching the tiny wisps of clouds that had swirled up high in the sky. For a moment, her skin seemed to glow with a soft light as the elfin young girl was utterly at home within the woodland surroundings. When Keren started to talk, she looked back at him, her inquisitive eyes fully focused on the older teen. When he offered her some pretzels, she reached forward and took a couple with a little thank you, before settling back, a sad expression growing on her face. “It was a very terrible time…I hadn’t been at the school for so very long, it was a very strange time as there were all sorts of other people who were staying in the grounds, and then we had to leave the school to go to a safe place. Greymalkin One, it’s very nice. Only on the trip on the Quinjet we had to stop on this platform, only there was a hurricane and the platform started to break and then someone fell off the platform – Jason, he’s very nice, bit funny – so I had to jump off and save him before he smacked into the sea – we were above the ocean – which would have hurt an awful lot…” Nibbling quietly on a pretzel, Meggan swallowed nervously, wiping a crumb from the corner of her mouth. “I’m sure the technology people will do everything they could to help her get a new arm…But maybe someone at the school could? There’re some very clever people here. And I’m sure she’s not angry at you too bad – she’s your auntie…I’m sure it wasn’t your fault, it was the Apocalypse person’s fault if anyone.” |

There was no denying that this elfish girl lived in a world of her own. She moved from topic to topic at the blink of an eye, and her emotions shifted just as fast. Keren wondered if she was always so…unguarded. A teeny part of him wished that he could be as carefree as Meggan, seemingly without a care in the world. The blonde girl’s peculiar behavior was enough to distract Keren from his troubles, if only momentarily. He knew if he let himself brood he’d only sink deeper and deeper into a depression, but he couldn’t help himself. Now, however, he was too perplexed to think of the gloomy future. “Wait, she can talk to squirrels?” It wasn’t the first strange thing she had said, but it made Keren’s brow furrow…or furrow more. As it were Keren was imagining Meggan’s unseen roommates as a character in one of his favorite childhood cartoons. In it, one of the super-powered kindergarteners has the ability to converse with squirrels. “That is an interesting and unexpected mutation…” The girl’s face grew dark as she regaled Keren with her own Apocalypse experiences. It was odd to think of those days in terms outside of his own troubles, even though he new millions of people died his problems always seemed so isolated. It was childish to think he was the only person affected, but he supposed that was the self-absorbed nature of humans. “That is because of your obnoxious internalizations.” Mal quipped. “Maybe if you came up for air every once and again you would not feel so secluded.” But Keren was listening to Meggan. Apparently she saved someone during the hurricanes. Everyone had their own adventures during that time, but not everyone was a lucky as he. That thought helped him a little; at least his Aunt was still alive and vital. Their fate could have been a lot worse, but in the end they made it out. “I know he is really the one responsible, but we would not have been fleeing the country and wouldn’t have been on that road were it not for me. She was scared for me, scared that the Mossad would try to enlist me. And I wouldn’t’ve even been there…” but he didn’t finish his thought, which was too much of himself to share to a stranger…or to anyone really. “It’s just impossible to blame some faceless man I’ve never seen or know anything about. And I need to blame someone, and feel something.” The effects of his mutation threatened his very humanity. It was terribly frightening, so Keren sometimes forced himself into thinking painful thoughts. His guilt was reassuring and comfortable; it reminded him of his compassion. “But what can they do for her here that SHIELD can’t? I thought this place was only a school” |

Empathic Metamorph / Flight / Concussive Blasts

The boy seemed a little surprised at Doreen’s ability and Meggan’s face broke into an even wider grin as she nodded insistently. “Oh yes, she can talk to squirrels. It’s quite a useful power, I think, as animals are very important to the world and they can give you all sorts of opinions on things that really matter, because they’re not distracted by silly sorts of things like video games and buying lots of clothes…Though I do like playing video games, especially with Robert, as it’s fun,” she commented, rocking back on her mossy perch a little, she balanced perfectly, not in any danger of falling backwards should she tilt too much. The blonde, fey girl was right at home amongst the trees and rocks; an extension of nature in herself. Not really sure what to say when it came to the subject of blame, the girl instead got up on her knees and leant forward, throwing her little arms around Keren and giving him a big hug instead. Everyone liked hugs and if they didn’t, they were either silly or lying. After giving her hug, Meggan settled back once more. She still wasn’t too sure what to say about blame and things, but then he asked about what the school could do and she felt that was a much safer topic of conversation. “Well for one thing, SHIELD are sort of mean. I don’t like them very much. I remember back before Christmas something happened in the city and everything went all sort of loopy and I started glowing and everything and it was raining pennies, but then SHIELD people turned up and the lady was horrible to us and…Well, the lady who flew us to Greymalkin was nice…” she took a small break to eat another pretzel, before swallowing the mouthful and continuing. “But anyway, there really are some clever people at the school and in X-Factor. They don’t really come to the school so much but we all help each other out, as we’re all mutants and we look after each other…We’ve got lots of amazing things, like the jet and the Danger Room and there’s all sorts of stuff around the place that you’d never find in a normal school. I do think there would be someone in the school who at the very least would know someone who could help out, because that’s what we do for each other here, we all help,” the little blonde gave him her biggest, brightest smile, hoping very much that there was someone who really could help his Aunty get better, because she was sure if that happened, then he’d be happy and Mal wouldn’t need to worry. |

“Hey, buying clothes can be fun too…” replied Keren playfully as they strolled through the foliage. When there were things to be had, one could count on Keren to buy them. The teen was dreadful with money and he loved spending it on a variety of items, some more practical than others. If it weren’t for his Aunt, he’d probably already have blown his entire inheritance. Money never really matter to him, for he’d always had it. With his parents gone he would have to begin making smarter choices. With a feeble attempt at a wry smile he continued:“Video games might not distract them, but I bet acorns do. Teasing aside, I think that is neat. If she ever feels lonely all she has to do is stroll into the woods.” Keren was taken aback when the girl gave him a hug. He’d been babbling about is 'feelings' before she leaned over and squeezed him. At first contact he tensed, unsure of what was going on. As the embrace continued, however, he relaxed into it and awkwardly patted the blonde elf on the crown of her head. “Thanks for that, it was nice.” He said when it was over. Settling back into his previous position, Keren decided that Meggan wasn’t offbeat or odd…only childlike. He could tell that the world was simple to her. When his cousins fall and hurt themselves, all it took was a hug to make them feel better. Meggan also seemed to think in those terms, and her methods did produce the desired results. The topic finally moved away from Keren’s woes. The chat with Meggan really did help to lighten his grim mood, but he was beginning to feel like a moaner. Currently, Meggan was at it again, explaining her experiences without ever actually explaining it. She often left Keren more confused than when she started. There was no way he could follow, but he nodded politely and indulged her. “Yea, you probably know more about them than I do…those people just seriously creep me out. But, I probably shouldn’t say that since they’ve helped my family so much…but there you have it.” The pretzel bag was officially empty, so Keren crinkled it up and stuffed it into his pant pocket. A soft breeze whistled through the trees as Keren listened to Meggan talk about X-Factor and other topics. He’d received a rundown of most of these things already, but he was still in the “is this real life” stage, which seemed at odds with Meggan’s nonchalance. The Danger Room, for example, made absolutely no sense. It was magnificent and spooky simultaneously. “You are right. Maybe I can convince her to shop around for help. Thanks for listening by the way…you’ve been a big help, and I really appreciate it.” “See I told you.” Piped Mal. “If you just stopped isolating yourself you wouldn’t feel everything as hard.” And she was right. Just sitting with another person lighten his burden. “But that’s enough about me, I feel like I’ve been hogging the conversation. Was there anything on your mind?” |

Meggan nibbled her lip, twisting her fingers in the hem of her shirt. “Well I suppose so. Almost anything can be fun, if you make it fun…I just prefer doing other things better than clothes shopping but if I went with friends then I think I wouldn’t mind too much…” she mused. “But some people really do spend too much money on things like that. If I could read better, I’d buy lots of books.” As he thanked her for the hug, the elfin blonde settled back down, crinkling her turned up nose in amusement. It was such a silly thing to say thank you for, a hug, as everyone should get more hugs and not have to ask or say thank you for them. But she remembered her manners and nodded enthusiastically. “You’re welcome. Hugs are nice, aren’t they?” she made it more of a statement than a question as she watched the older boy settle back and in turn got comfortable once more on her own moss covered perch, looking upwards to the sky, feeling very content and at home as she gazed into the blue above, with the forest all around. It made her feel warm and pleasant inside. “Oh, I probably don’t know more than you. I just know different things. Really my head is all sorts of empty,” again she grinned at him broadly. “But the people from SHIELD I have met weren’t very nice, but I’m sure there are a few nice people there, else no one would like them at all, would they?” the girl hoped there was more than a few nice people in SHIELD, else that really would be a shame, especially since so many people thought they were the good ones and you couldn’t really be a good person, if you weren’t very kind. Birds were singing in the forest and the leaves rustled in the trees around them as they hopped around on branches or took flight into the sky. Summer was quite possibly Meggan’s favourite time of year and she was enjoying being outside about as much as she was enjoying the fact she had made a new friend. Keren was almost certainly a friend by now, she told herself and grinned at the thought. “Oh you should, really. Talking to all sorts of different people makes it easier sometimes, because everyone knows different things, so someone here or at X-Factor might know things that people in SHIELD don’t, but even then, getting help from all different places is nice. I have lots of people who help me with my homework, which is good because people are better at different subjects. My favourites are art and drama, but I only really need reading help in drama and Mister Wagner is ever such a good teacher, so he doesn’t mind me getting help as he thinks I’m very good at it. And don’t be silly, you don’t need to thank me for anything at all. Except maybe the pretzels, as I was going to eat those…” Meggan paused here and began to rummage around in her bag, arranging everything so it wasn’t too disordered, which she was quite prone to but trying to get better. Her books were colour coded, which made things easier for her, as although she had progressed marvellously and the teachers were very happy, she still got muddled and colours were sometimes the easiest for her. Lifting her head out of her bag, she looked at him with her wide blue eyes as he asked if there was anything on her mind, as he’d been hogging the conversation. “Oh. Well, no…No, not really,” the fey girl rocked back on her heels, closing her bag and fastening it up. “I think all sorts of things all the time, and feel all sorts of things but that’s usually what other people are thinking. I sometimes miss my parents but…” her face fell for a brief moment. “But…I’m sure I’ll see them again some day. I really do think I will.” Meggan’s voice was tinged with a distant, hopeful edge to it and a little uncertainty. Sometimes she wondered if she would ever see her parents again or if they had really lost her, but she always pushed this to the back of her mind. Lost her or not, she had a nice life now and a good school and she was learning to do good things…so her parents had done a very good thing for her in the end, hadn’t they? Blinking away a fat little tear, the blonde looked at Keren and gave him a smile to show she was fine, her round cheeks lighting up. |

“You’re welcome. Hugs are nice, aren’t they?” “Uh, yea…sure they are.” He replied. It wasn’t a lie either per se. Keren enjoyed hugs from his Aunt and nephews, but when it came to contact with peers (and new peers at that) he was iffy. His body almost always tensed into them, and he would have to force himself to relax. A hug was just too affectionate, which wasn't not something he was us to. Not to mention the vulnerability in it. “Which is silly, considering you just divulged all of your deepest, darkest, and incredibly pressing secrets.” Mal finally felt comfortable enough to leave Keren’s side. She was currently darting through the trees, beams of sunlight flashing on her beak. “It’s true though, I know very little about all of this. It is still so new to me. Though I will be learning more about S.H.I.E.L.D. I guess, since my Aunt will become an agent. They pay well, and she feels like she owes them...they can’t all be too bad if they are will to help my family. I guess I’ll just have to trust her.” The realization came to him just then. If Rachel felt anything amiss with those people, then she wouldn’t cooperate with them. She didn’t flee her job and home only to risk danger here. Keren would simply put it out of his mind, and believe that his Aunt knew what she was doing. No matter how much it worried him. “Well if you won’t let him thank you…let me. I was doomed to a whole day of his moping before you came along.” “She’s right, however facetiously she chooses her words. You really have brightened my day, made me feel like I have a friend here. As for the pretzels…” he said, grinning at her. Finishing off a candy bar and bag of pretzels seemed to only make Keren hungrier. His stomach grumbled hungrily as he sat on the forest floor. “You will be handsomely compensated, how about pizza…or cake and ice-cream.” But Meggan was too busy diving into her bag. When she came up for air she told Keren about missing her family. Her eyes were tear filled, and tinged with lonesomeness. Keren broke his comfort zone and gave her an awkward hug. “Come on, let’s go get some pizza…you do like pizza don’t you? I have a scooter we can ride into town.” He helped Meggan up and handed her the book bag. Before leaving the clearing, Keren challenged her to a race, and as Mal flew beside the running children she said; with a hint of whine in her voice: “Hey wait a minute…you never did turn into that dragon!” [[END]] |
