Wednesday September 29th 1:00pm Danger Room ---------------------------- About an hour ago Everett Thomas woke from an enjoyable slumber to the sound of an annoying clock. He rose from under the covers with a big yawn and scratch to get the day started. His left hand found its way to the clock to stop the persistent buzzing that filled the room. With that thing shut off he dragged himself to the bathroom to freshen up before doing anything else. After that was taken care of, he slid on over to the closet to pick out something to wear for the day. His outfit of choice was predetermined by a conversation that was had just last night. Picking it off the rack, he slipped it on over his boxers and exited the room. It was one in the afternoon now; students were going about their daily lives in the Xavier Institute. Some were studying others having a little fun, all enjoying themselves. One kid with butterfly wings flew passed Everett causing him to smile and nod in greeting. It was always nice to have these sorts of days when the world wasn’t in peril or lives didn’t need saving. Then again people were always in need of saving all over the world. But the X-Men were only one team; they couldn’t help every single person out there. Despite that little fact, they still tried which was something to be admired. It made Everett happy to be a part of such a great group of individuals and to help shape the minds of future saviors. Not only did one need a strong mind, but a strong body as well. The best way to do so was to have training sessions in the institutes own Danger Room. He was on his way to said location to help out a few people with a session that he’d thought about the previous night and develop a stronger bond with them that would be beneficial in the future. It was by chance that all of them would end up in the same place at the same time to carry out the discussion. But in a facility like this, it wasn’t hard for something like that to occur. Everything happened for a reason they say. Everett entered the elevator that would take him to the lower levels of the school that held the most important rooms. Whistling a little tune, he made his way over to the control panel that would allow access to the Danger Room. He entered all of the necessary security measures and grinned as the doors slid open. The first thing to do was entered the program into the computer. Once that was finished, he would wait for the other participants to arrive on the scene. This session was going to be a fun one, maybe even a candidate for top five in his book. |

To say that this month had been... difficult for Rahne Sinclair was putting it mildly. But through both strength of will and the support of friends and loved ones, she had come out of it, she had recovered, and had finally started feeling like her old self again. She got back on to active duty, resumed teaching her class, and had regained her pleasant demeanor once more. Things were starting to look up again.* This was to be her first true training session since then, and she felt... ready. Eager, almost. She needed to do something constructive for once, and this was as good a place as any to start. As Everett made his way down the hallway, Rahne was there waiting outside the door. She looked more well-rested and refreshed than she had in some time, the grey circles that had been under her eyes the past few weeks gone. It was a wonderful thing, being able to sleep once again. She was in her X-Men uniform, yet not in her half-wolf form. She leaned up against the wall, arms folded at her chest, toes tapping idly on the cold steel floor, watching Everett as he strode down the hallway. "Good afternoon t' ye, Mister Thomas," Rahne said with a slight nod of her head and the barest hint of a smile on her face. She followed him inside, quickly adjusting the small flap on the back of her uniform that allowed her tail to grow unimpeded. Can't have anything indecent showing, after all. That would be improper. She glanced over the computer terminal as Everett began programming the session in. She was mildly jealous at the ease with which he managed to do it all - she had required fairly extensive instruction and then re-instruction and still struggled with all but the most basic of scenarios, or ones that were pre-loaded and all she had to do was scroll down the menu and choose. "Well, I'm ready whenever you are," she said, clapping her hands together. Yes, she was most definiteiy ready. [* - To find out more, True Believers, stay tuned for "The Proteus Saga", coming soon! Keren was older than many of the students here. Since he’d already graduated high school that meant he had a lot of extra time on his hands. What to do with said free time was the question, and Keren didn’t have an answer yet. There were three obvious paths her could take; find a job, take online University courses, or all of the above. The job part was the easiest for he’d heard a few students talking about X-Corps, some type of charitable institution for mutants. X-Corps was located in the city, and it would be perfect for a weekend type job. He didn’t know if it would pay or not (doubted it would in fact) but that didn’t matter, he had all he needed. Either way he knew that training himself was his first priority, and that whatever road he took it wouldn’t travel too far from the Mansion. One thing Keren did use eat up some time was work-out in the mornings. When he got out of bed Keren conducted his normal routine, but instead of his usual work-out attire he threw on his training uniform. After a light trot to the training ground Keren assumed the position. He didn’t push himself as he usually would, figuring he body would go through enough rigors today. Instead, he focused techniques that calmed his mind and energized his body. He even practiced splitting his focus while using his powers. At the end of his session Keren felt good, rejuvenated. The anxiety he was feeling was still there, but it dispersed a bit as if he was also stretching his resolve. The nervous stone in his stomach was no longer present, just the indention it left. Unlike most of the people who came to the mansion seeking help, Keren did have some experience with his powers. The issue was not controlling his powers, but controlling his emotions for the former relied on the latter. So the fact that Keren was nervous about his training session with teachers and X-Men didn’t help his situation. He wanted to stride into the Danger Room full of confidence, and show his elders what he was capable of. Maybe “elders” wasn’t the right word, for they weren’t that much older than he. However, he felt compelled to prove himself; much like a kid brother, trying to hang with the big kids. As the elevator descended Keren planned out all of the insanely awesome things he would do. Many ninja flips and godlike displays of power emerged in his mind, and Mal’s rude snickering played as the soundtrack. “Honestly, let’s just go and have fun. Don’t take every single thing so seriously. They invited you because they think you can handle it, so relax.” She was excited too. This would be their first taste of what the Danger Room is really capable of. His previous forays were much like robot target practice (which was still cool), but this time they would be going to the Savage Land. Some sort of Jurassic Park…or something. Keren still didn’t understand it, but apparently there was a hidden island inhabited by dinosaurs and junk. And the Danger Room could be made to simulate it perfectly. Excitement wasn’t really a big enough word to describe his feelings. Keren poked his head out of the elevator after it opened on his floor. Two of the members were already waiting. Their little ragtag band formed quite randomly. Keren just happened to be passing by when he name was called by Everett. Synch was one of the many X-Men he looked up to; he seemed like a genuinely nice guy. He was personable and confident, and had an easy smile. Next to him was Ms. Sinclair one of the staff members that Keren bumped into the most. A few things had recently transpired that snuffed out her otherwise surefooted stride, but she was slowly regaining momentum. The last person was still missing, Lucia, a student/teacher who arrived the same day Keren did. From what he knew of her, the blonde had energy to spare. “Hello.” He said through a nervous exhale of breath. “soo…just waiting on Lucia?” He suddenly wished his suit had pockets. |

Lucia had had something of a restless night. It had started off nice enough. Having conquered her weekly work assignments and class-project marking, Lucia had rewarded herself. A tub of English toffee-flavored ice cream, a bubble-spa foot massage and pwning noobs in Halo Reachon her new TV were apt salves. Sometimes life was just awesome, and the blonde couldn't think of many sounds that were sweeter than the endless weeping of the Halo fanboys she shot in the head on a weekly basis. Die bitches! That was until she had been invited to devise and participate in a Danger Room exercise. Could her night have gotten any better? Not unless poker was involved. And so after congregation, cooperation and accommodation, Lucia had returned to her room a very happy woman. So happy in fact, that her attempts at sleep were mired with difficulties, as the blonde could barely stay in one position for more than a few seconds and all her attempts at burning off excess energy were in vain. With no need for an alarm clock and knocking over her 4am exercise easily enough, Lucia had then counted down the hours until 1pm. When she wasn't preoccupied, she pulled out her guitar and hyped herself up some further. Danger Zone from the Top Gun soundtrack was a particular favorite of hers. The only thing that had stopped her from sprinting to the Danger Room were the in-mansion rules against traveling faster than a brisk walk. But it ultimately didn't matter, as Lucia went back to her room to change clothes anyway. Unlike some lucky others she didn't have an X-suit. She didn't even own any proper fatigues, as she never went paint-balling, and though she secretly believed she'd look pretty spiffy in a beret, she couldn't see herself getting much use out of owning some camo gear. Instead she just rocked up in some trainers. 'Briskly walking' out of the elevator and into the expansive basement, Lucia's amazement at this part of the mansion never cease. If it wasn't the facility itself, then it was the technological wonders housed within, and the staggering price tags each one had. The jet alone must have been worth almost a billion dollars just to build, let alone fuel and maintain. Being a rubber-neck and taking in everything she saw, Lucia eventually happened upon the three others she'd be working with today. Rahne, whom she had already met and liked. Yantra, who had been one of the first people she'd interacted with at the school. And Synch. She didn't know much about Synch. An omission that would undoubtedly be remedied very soon. 'Hallo all!' she grinned during her approach, rubbing her hands together as she did so. Consciously, Lucia had to restrain herself from greeting them further in another language, out of fear it'd just make her look like an idiot. |

Everett looked back over his shoulder upon hearing the voice of the second arrival. “It is a good one huh?” he smiled. Rahne Sinclair was a nice young woman despite recent events. He enjoyed her company whenever could so having her here to train with would be enjoyable. Heck training with just about everyone in the building was a joy for the kid, except maybe Logan. Things could get pretty damn intense when taken that powerhouse on. “Alright cutie pie, almost done setting everything up.” Hehe, cutie pie. You could blame the classic movie and one of his favorites, Friday, for that one. After typing a few more keys, the program was set and ready to be launched. Why exactly did he choose a game of capture the flag? Well it was a game that demanded teamwork and without good teamwork, negative things could happen out in the field. And it was a pretty sweet game that he used to play all the time with his friends back in St. Louis. “Now all we have to do is wait for the others to arrive.” He ran a hand across the top of his smooth, trimmed hair letting out a small sigh of anticipation for the mission. The elevator doors parted allowing the third competitor to enter the area. It was the student named Keren. The kid hadn’t been at the institute too long so Everett was a little vague on him. He didn’t know what the boy was capable of, but was sure that he could probably handle himself when the time came. “Hey, Keren. And yep, everything’s set and ready. Just need the fourth player.” And wouldn’t you know it. The fourth player was making her way down now. Everett crossed his arms and smiled as he watched her walk toward them. “Hey Lucia,” he gave a short wave. Though she hadn’t been at the institute long either, he was a little more familiar with her due to her position on staff. Everett pushed himself off the dash and clasped his hands in front of him. “Alright now that everyone is here, let’s recap. This is a game of one round Capture the Flag. The goal is to retrieve the single, white flag from the center of the field before the opposing team and return it to your safety zone. But remember, this is no ordinary grab and run. We aren’t playing in the middle of Central Park or Disney Land.” Everett took a moment to take in a breath before continuing. “Our playing field is the infamous Savage Land. Erase any and all thoughts of an easy win. Not only will you be competing against two other great competitors, but the harsh terrain and ruthless wildlife. Oh, but not just any wildlife.” He smiled. “The Savage Land is like Jurassic Park off the hinges with a sprinkle of mutated bugs straight from a bad SyFy movie. If something looks like a harmless shadow, it probably isn’t. So keep your eyes and ears open at all times.” Everett looked at all of their faces as his hands rested at his sides. “As for the teams, I suggest Lucia and I against you two.” |

"C-cutie pie?!" Rahne's eyes went wide and a slight blush came to her cheeks. "Mister Thomas, I'll have ye know I've got a boyfriend..." Clearly, flirting wasn't something she was particularly familiar with or well-accustomed to. After all, guys don't tend to flirt with girls who could fully well rip their throats out, disembowel them, and feast on their innards. Not that that was something Rahne would ever ever do, but it was well within her physical capabilities. One at a time, the other two participants arrived, neither of them X-Men, neither of them having been at the school for terribly too long. "Hullo, Lu, Keren," she greeted as they entered the room. She took a short breath and let it out slowly, the blush heat slowly fading from her face. The two were ready in their own way, and that was good. This was going to be a good session, she knew it. "Oh, Lu, we simply must get ye some tights of yuir own, ye know," Rahne said with a light shake of her head. It was always interesting to her, the different priorities each person had. In her case, she had a suit designed almost immediately upon arriving, having all but grown up with stories of super heroism from the first class of X-Men. The details of the session brought a big, genuinely pleased smile to Rahne's face. The Savage Land. Despite the hardships they'd all faced there, there truly was a beauty and magic to the place, a primal wonder that spoke to her wild side. Plus it didn't hurt that put of the four of them, Rahne was the only one who had actually been there, and on two separate occasions at that. That gave her an advantage. And there was no way she wasn't going to take full advantage of that advantage. "Sounds good," Rahne said, folding her arms at her chest. "Losers buy the winners ice cream." First things first though, she was going to need to know what her partner was capable of. "Keren an' myself, we'll head down first, give us a moment to strategize before we start up," she said as she gently yet firmly led him to the lift that took them from the control room to the Danger Room proper. "Alright," she said once the lift doors had closed behind them. "First things first, I need t' know exactly what yuir capable of." |

When Lucia arrived they all huddled together to talk further about the planned session. After much exclamation over Lucia’s lack of a uniform (typical girl stuff) Synch went over the theme once more. They would be searching for a flag amongst vicious giant reptiles and treacherous terrain. Slowly Keren’s nervous knot became an excited one. He had a touch of “daredevil” in him, and the chance to thrill seek was giving him a natural high. However, the Savage Lands sounded like something out of a fantasy novel to Keren, and he was beginning to doubt the room’s ability to replicate it. As stated before Keren’s previous Danger Room experiences have been filled with robots. He has heard of its other capabilities and even got a little taste (a demonstration with a classroom), but the Savage Lands sounded like a complex place. Surely a computerized…whatever the room is, can’t render a lush, prehistoric jungle with all of the sights and smells. Keren kept his skepticism to himself as Synch finished his spiel. He was to be with Rahne, which was ideal. He’d seen her change into a hybrid wolf lady, and it wouldn’t be a huge leap to assume she had the nose to go with it. After the stakes were raised, (free ice-cream was hanging in the balance) Rahne pulled the younger mutant to another room. When the doors finished closing she said: "First things first, I need t' know exactly what yuir capable of." In truth, Keren didn’t know how to answer that question. Hoping she meant “What is your mutation?” Keren replied: “Really all I can do is zap/heat things. Though I can scout as well, but that would leave me powerless.” He brushed over the whole talking bird thing (much to Mal’s chagrin), that just seemed to confuse people. “I’m thinking that you can take the lead, and I will try to fend off opposition from afar. But if you want a bird’s eye view, I can give you that. You’d just have to protect me. And should we need a fire…I’m your guy. Now let’s get serious…we need a team name. I vote for the ~GAMMA STARS~” |

Joining the group as they congregated about the flashy computer consoles, Lucia listened quietly to the scenario of today: hi-ho to the the Savage Land! She hadn't been in a jungle since she'd left Sierra Leone roughly half a decade ago. From the lush, humid jungles to a well-to-do house in Massachusetts, the change had been radical to say the least. "Oh, Lu, we simply must get ye some tights of yuir own, ye know," Rahnes said. Perking up her ears, Lucia rose a slender, yellow eyebrow in amusement. Tights? In the jungle? The humidity alone would be murder! 'I'll pass on the tights.' the blonde responded, trying to hide her smile, 'But I could go for some jungle camo that breathes easy. Wouldn't happen to have any?' The last thing Lucia wanted was to be sweating away inside a pair of 'tights'. She was, however, rubbing her hands together at the explanation Synch gave for this Godforsaken place. It sounded titillating and adventurous, the idea of giant bugs and dinosaurs speaking straight to the stimuli-seeker Lucia kept bottled up inside of her. This was going to be grand! Lucia didn't care right now exactly how the computer and room managed to generate such holographic trickery, she was only interested in that it did it flawlessly for the experience-to-come. “As for the teams, I suggest Lucia and I against you two.” Lucia's head cocked to the side slightly by the promise of ice cream. This would be a sweet victory indeed. An ice-creamy victory! The best kind of victory. Turning to look at her partner for the event, Lucia clicked her tongue in thought. 'So...what's the plan of action?' |

If Rahne was single, she sure as Hell wouldn’t be. Everett would have hopped onto her a long time ago that was for sure. The woman wasn’t the most endowed of the bunch, but she was cute and had a great personality. Those were the only requirements in a woman for him. But enough thinking about a taken woman, he had other things to contemplate like what sort of strategy was needed to win against the other two. Everett had yet to see Lucia in action so her skills were a mystery. That made it more fun to work with her. He smiled when Rahne upped the ante with the promise of ice cream. “You got it.” As their opponents went off ahead of them, Everett turned his attention to Lucia. Hm, the plan of action. What would be the most successful strategy against a kid and a chick with the senses of a wolf? No idea. “First thing to do is make sure that the area around our base is free of any unwelcome guests. Once that’s done we proceed cautiously through the jungle to the flag. Plain and simple.” For now he wouldn’t go into much detail. The rest would be thought up once the exercise began. “Come on, let’s head down.” He made his way over to the lift that would take them down into the Danger Room. Everett stood on the opposite side of his opponents, stretching out his legs and arms. Once everyone seemed like they were good to go he spoke out. “Initialize program: Savage Capture.” He momentarily glanced over to Lucia with a slight shrug. “Yea, not the best at naming.” He couldn’t think of some cool name to call the program like Scott probably would have. Savage Capture would have to do. The once large metal room soon began to shift into a cauldron of color and flora, lush greens, blues, yellows, and reds. His eyes glanced upwards for a moment as the roof turned into night time sky. His eyes returned to the area in front of him. He couldn’t see anything but thick bushes and trees. Rahne and Keren were no longer in sight. Everett smiled to Lucia. “I have the ability to synchronize with other super powered beings. Putting it simple; anything you can do I can do slightly better.” He smiled again to let her know that he wasn’t trying to sound cocky, it was simply the truth. |

Before too long, the scenery sprung up around them. It never ceased to amaze Rahne how thoroughly immersive Danger Room programs were. Sure, they couldn't quite replicate the full range of sensory stimulation that the real place had, but it came incredibly close. The sights, the sounds, the temperature, even the texture of the ground beneath her bare feet as they crunched on fallen leaves and twigs. Sure, the place didn't smell like the real thing, but that was difficult or maybe even impossible to replicate using hard-light technology, something Rahne admittedly had no understanding of just how it worked. "Alright," Rahne said to Keren, nodding her head. "We advance together, keepin' a careful eye out for outside threats an' our opponents. Now, as ye may know - Lucia manipulates gravity. Everett does whatever mutants nearby can do. So odds are almost a hundred percent that he'll be pullin' her tricks. Which means we may find ourselves suddenly pinned to the floor or floatin' midair. If an' when that happens, I'll need ye to disrupt 'em. I point 'em out, you give 'em a burst of zap-heat. Nothin' that'll hurt 'em too much, but it'll break their focus and force 'em to drop us." She wasn't a field leader, but she had some practice in the matter - actually, in the real world equivalent of this very place. She had partaken of a "leaders in training" course alongside Bobby Drake, Doug Ramsey, and Joshua Foley some time ago. She had some experience making decisions like this. "So we stick together - seek out the flag, fight off any dinosaurs or other prehistoric critters along the way - once we get to the flag, I'll take it into mouth and change the rest of the way - I'll be faster, a smaller target, hopefully able to lose 'em in the underbrush, bring the flag back here to our home location an' win the course. During that time, I'll need ye coverin' me. They start gettin' close, ye knock 'em right on back. Workin' together, we can do this." She smiled, nodding her head sharply before a shudder ran down her spine and she shifted half of the way into her wolf form. She extended her right hand to Keren, that universal gesture for "handshake". "Yuir ready for this?" |

Keren’s jaw unhinged a bit as the program sprang to life around them. What little doubt he had about the limitations of the Danger Room were very efficiently extinguished. Bending down, Keren picked up a twig and snapped it. It was bizarre, he felt like Billy Pilgrim…ripped from his own time period. The trees were lush and close together, so he couldn’t see the horizon. But the sky certainly looked a hundred miles away, and yet they were in a subbasement. It was as if Keren’s body wanted to be disoriented, but couldn’t because everything was so life like. To his side, Rahne was giving Keren the lowdown on their opponents. Lucia wielded gravity, and Synch could do whatever she did. Getting caught within their power would spell trouble for his team, so the best strategy would be to avoid them. Beat them to the flag, and run like hell. Rahne looked capable in the speed department, and Keren was light on his toes. He would take using Mal as a look-out in shifts, knowing where the other team was would be most beneficial for the “evade tactics”. It would be a risk, but a warranted one. Listening to what Rahne was saying Keren nodded his head; she was the X-Man after all. He would follow his orders to the best of his ability. Mal, for her part, was making it extremely difficult to concentrate. She flew with abandon, corkscrewing dangerously within the air. At present she was trying to find the ceiling but the foreignness of it all was disorienting, so she quickly gave it up. “I can’t even see the other team.” She said, her avian voice full of marvel. “And they are probably right next to us!” She swooped around like she was mad, trying to tell if they were close by, but it was all in vain. She switched from finding the opposing team, to scouting pterodactyls. At this point, his concentration was broken. Mal was having too much fun, and the lines between their separate minds were blurring. For brief glimpses it was he who was flying in the trees, searching for raptors. After a mental shake Keren refocused his gaze on Rahne, who was actually now Wolfsbane. In the moment Keren looked away she had transformed into the werewolf creature she’d been when they met. Her paw like hand was extended and Keren took it, giving it a firm shake. “I’m not 100% sure,” he replied. “But we are about to find out.” Team Gamma Stars for the win! he thought. |

Like the others, Lucia was swept up in the grandiosity of the danger-rooms transformation. The dazzling display of hard-light sculpture was irresistibly beautiful, and the physicist within her was awestruck by the degree of advanced understanding required to construct such a machine. In the wake of the holograms materialisation, Lucia was confronted by the familiar scent and mild humidity of a jungle. The Savage Land. It had been years since her last involvement in such forestry. Where once she had witnessed children with automatic weapons, now she had been assured by her colleagues that the umbrage was alive with prehistoric nasties and reptilian monsters. Folding her arms over her tummy, the blonde rubbed her sides absentmindedly while taking in the scene. Seemingly immersed in her thoughts, she barely paid any attention to Synch's comments until he spoke of powers, and how he could do whatever she could do. “I have the ability to synchronize with other super powered beings. Putting it simple; anything you can do I can do slightly better.” Blinking away her thoughts, she turned her head to look at the fellow, her face eerily neutral in contrast to her usual jubilation. 'Is that so?' Lucia responded, forcing a smile as to not appear rude 'Well, I've got a lot to develop yet - so don't spoil it for me.' bringing herself back to the present, the blonde peered around the surroundings, taking note of small things and thankful that there were no large footprints embedded in the earth. Just in case the Danger-room ha decided to be cute and throw an early surprise their way. 'Well,' Lucia started, drifting off the ground a few feet in flight, 'I don't know what Keren can do, but I'm going to assume he cannot fly. Rahne has a wolves instincts; they're pack hunters. She is unlikely to proceed on her own, and Keren's foot-based speed through the thick undergrowth will slow them down considerably. So...' Lucia turned herself towards Synch, looking down at him from a few feet up. If he really could do all that she could do, only better as he had so charmingly put it, she wouldn't have to carry him. 'I think it would be best to fly at the roof of the jungle. Just below the canopy so we aren't seen by predators in the sky, but out of reach of whatever lurks on the floor-bed. Should we engage Keren and Rahne, our task is to capture the flag - not destroy the opposing team, so neutralising them from a distance would be our best bet.' she finished, hovering in wait for Synch to either add to her comments, correct any of her mistakes or follow-suit should the X-man take to her suggestion and fly off. |

It was always amazing to witness the Danger Room in action. No matter how many times he’d been in it, the place always put him in awe. He was a technical guy by a long shot, so to see this place operate the way it did was nice. He wondered how hard light and projections and other tech things could produce such life like scenery. A small bird flew over head squawking. If you didn’t know this was a projection you’d think that someone had let their pet loose in the room. He looked to his partner. “Ooo, sounds like fun. I’ll try not to go insane with power,” he joked. Hm, so she could fly or at least levitate. That would most definitely come in handy here. Instead of fumbling around through all of the foliage, they would be able to fly over it. “This is true. Rahne can probably smell us coming a mile away so we have to keep an eye out for her.” Everett found it kind of sexy how Lucia was taking up a leadership role. A smile touched the corner of his mouth as he nodded. “The flag is our focus. If and when the others spot us, we waste no time trying to defeat them.” He closed his eyes for a moment as the rainbow colored aura escaped him. For a moment, the boy paused. “Oh… wow.” The aura surrounding his body vanished as he began to lift off of the ground. Lucia wasn’t actually flying or levitating, but distorting the gravity around her. This woman had quite an arsenal at her disposal that now belonged to him as well. He nodded to her with an eager grin. “Let’s do this thing.” Everett began to float forward about seven feet off of the ground, his arms at his sides. It had been some time since he got the chance to fly. Yea, this was going to be awesome. They’d have that flag in no time. |

The two treaded through the jungle growth at a relatively quick pace, all things considered. The trouble with searching for a flag in the jungles of the Cretaceous era (that somehow, through alien technology, exist in the modern day in Antarctica of all places) was that there were plenty of competing scents, sounds, sights that threatened to not quite overwhelm, but rather... distract. There were too many variables, too many things, and it made focusing on one particular scent difficult. Not to mention there was no real physical flag so to speak. It prevented someone like her from having an unfair advantage in a simulation like this. The flag didn't have a scent, as it was hard light rather than nylon or cloth or vinyl. She had just as good odds of finding the flag as anyone else. But still, she had a vague sense of a direction - towards the middle. This wasn't the real Savage Land, but a simulation, set up like a course. Rahne paused as a series of clicking "chhhrrrr" sounds softly resounded through the brush. A sound she knew all too well - compsognathus. "Keren..." she said, her voice a hushed whisper. "We're about to be swarmed. Stay close, and do not hold back. They may be small, but they are many, and they are dangerous. But they're also pack animals, an' if ye can obliterate enough of 'em, the rest may scatter. Be on yuir guard..." The "chhhrrr"s suddenly snapped up into a united "HISS" as nearly twenty of them leaped up and out of the brush, attacking in unison. They were indeed small, maybe about the size of a housecat, bipedal, with tiny mouths full of razor sharp teeth and claws on hand and toe to match. Solo, one would not be much more threat than sad housecat. In a pack like this, they could be deadly. "RRARRRRR!!!" Wolfsbane roared as she threw a wide swipe of her claws, catching five of them across the midsection. Were this the real world, their entrails would have splatterd, wide splashes of deep crimson staining the landscape. Here, in the Danger Room, the extent of the carnage was polygonal globules of light, sparkling as the artificial dinosaurs faded from existence as they "died". One landed on Wolfsbane's shoulder, and she crushed its head in her right hand before throwing it off of her. The display of brutality was possibly enough to make one wonder just how sweet and innocent she really was. |

High in the sky Mal flew, scanning the air for any signs of trouble. So far it was smooth sailing; she hadn’t spotted the other team or any birds of prey. Below her, Keren was breathily following his partners. Clearly he misgauged her abilities because the girl was quicker than he originally thought. So far he could keep up, but it wasn’t easy. As they leapt across fallen logs, Keren began to wonder just how they would find this flag when a shaft of light very briefly flashed. The canopy was too thick for Keren to see it himself, but he saw it through Mal’s eyes in the sky. “Hey Wolfsbane, I think we should veer a little to the left. Did you see that light just now?” But Rahne was focused entirely on something else. She had her canine ears swiveling like satellites, trying to locate some far off sound Keren could not hear. Closing his mouth, Keren let her focus. Finally she whispered his name and said: "We're about to be swarmed. Stay close, and do not hold back.” And that is exactly what he did, huddling close and almost tripping on her heel. He called out to Mal and she immediately dove out of the sky, ready for a fight. Slowly the tiny noises came to his ears, loud in a chaotic unison. When the minute creatures burst out of the shrubs Keren’s eyes went wide. The reptilian creatures were too lifelike. Part of him wanted to pick one up and examine it, and the other, more intelligent, part wanted to run. “Well that is no good.” Said Mal excitedly as Rahne tore through the first row of dinosaurs. “She isn’t sharing any with us!” Wolfsbane viciously ripped and slashed the creatures. Keren suspected some pent up frustration was being released. Expecting gore, Keren watched as the reptiles simply flashed out of existence. That unnatural occurrence calmed him, and steadied his nerves. This was just like a video game, only more realistic. “Let’s get in there!” She continued. “RAHNE!” Keren shouted over the mingled hissing and roars. “DODGE, QUICK!” ferociously the werewolf disposed of a stray dino that landed on her shoulder, and dashed out of the way. There is only one thing for it, thought Keren, Rahne told me to take out a chunk and the other would scatter. Haphazardly, Keren ran straight toward the oncoming assault, his body radiating fierce heat. All around him the dinosaurs were bursting into sparkling light and fading away. In his wake the surrounding leaves and grass all wilted and withered into blackened ash. About ten or so dinos ran straight into his heat, the rest halted in midstride and turned tail. “Not the most graceful attack, but well done.” Said Mal as she reappeared. Keren’s skin seemed to resonate with energy as he tried to catch his breath. Turning to address Rahne he said: “I saw the beacon go up; we were going the roughly right direction.” He pointed coolly, not wanting to appear as giddy and excited as he felt. But the sloppy smile on his face ruined the effect.“I think we need to head left just a touch.” |
