Time of day: 2 am
Place in the time-line: September 15th, Wednesday morning.

Melody was uncomfortable. The fifteen year old Guthrie girl woke up slowly. SHe was confused. Why wasn't she in bed? Instead of being wrapped up in her comforter, she was cold, sitting at a table... using her history book as a pillow. It was a crappy pillow, of course.

The dark room around her had to be the study lounge. Sitting up and stretching, she wondered how late it waws. How long she'd been asleep. Her eyes widened slightly at the time she saw on the clock. Oops. Way past her 'bed time'. Past curfew, that was. Way past. Gathering her books, she quietly headed back to the girls dorms. It was quiet and she didn't come across anyone on her way to her room.

Success!

Or not. The door was locked. And she couldn't find her key. Did she forget it in the study lounge or did she even bring it with her this morning? She couldn't remember. And there was no way she was going to go back to the study lounge to find it. If Anne Lee was awake she could summon it, but then again if Lee was awake she could just let her into the room.

Now what to do? It was like... really late or... really early. Melody just wanted to go back to sleep. She'd probably end up waking up half the dorm if she tried to wake her roomie. Even if she could find her window from outside, she'd be so dead for flying outside at this time it wasn't even funny. And with her luck today the window would be locked too. What to do?

After several minutes of standing around, tired and undecided, she finally just walked to the girls' lounge and curled up in one of the big arm chairs. Maybe she could get some sleep before she had to get up for the rest of the day. Today was going to just suck. So bad.

She sat straight up in bed and looked wildly around the dark room. Initially, her thoughts ran wild about where she was. The faint blue light of her laptop charging on the desk across from her bed was what brought her to reality, as she realized that she was in a new place. Sally laid back in bed, her heart racing and her breath rate heightened. Taking a few deep breaths, she tried to calm herself while staring towards the darkness above. After a bit of effort, she sighed and rolled over in her bed, scrunching the pillow up so that it would support her head more comfortably.

Several more minutes passed as she laid there awake, but what started as a small pain in her back grew into the urge to use the restroom. Knowing that she would never be able to ignore it away, Sally sat up and kicked the comforter off of her and walked as silently as possible towards the door. She tripped up only once, hitting her toe on a desk chair that had wandered too far away from it’s desk, which caused her to bounce on one foot while silently cursing the rest of the way to the door.

Once in the dimly lit hallway, she walked to the restroom. The tiles were cold on her bare feet, and she really didn’t think about the fact that it might be gross to walk on a communal bathroom barefooted. After doing her business and washing her hands, the sixteen year old walked back out to the hallway. Now that her eyes were a bit more adjusted to the light, she noticed that there was a light or two still on in the lounge and a drink of water would be nice before she returned to bed.

Her bare feet padding along down the hallway, Sally walked into the lounge in her pajamas. She was wearing blue Sponge Bob pajama pants and a faded old t-shirt that used to belong to her father that said “Welcome to McMinnville Tennessee!” on the left breast. Still not totally familiar with the layout, Sally stopped at the end of the hall and looked both ways in the lounge, deciding which way would be the best way to go to acquire a glass of water. Finally, her brown eyes came to the couches and large chairs where she saw another girl curling up, appearing to choose that as the spot that she slept for the night.

Sally looked at her for a moment and then looked around the room again. She hadn’t counted on running into anyone and truthfully, she hadn’t wanted to. She had just woken up, after all. Unsure if she should say something to Melody or just continue on her way, Sally stood there awkwardly for a moment and then turned towards what she thought was the exit that would lead her to the kitchen. Opening the door as quietly as possible, she glanced back at the Guthrie sister to make sure that she was not disturbing her as she walked inside a closet. Expecting to be moving down another hallway, Sally walked into shelves that was full of board games and other activities. Startled, she back peddled out of the closet and shut the door back, slamming it unintentionally.

Slowly, the girl turned back around face Melody, raising a hand up to move a strand of blonde hair out of her eyes. ”Sorry,” she said quietly, not totally sure if she had disturbed her.

She trotted down the hall lugging her old beat up laptop with her that was covered in surf company stickers. It was early....way to early. But it was the only time they ever showed surfing on TV and she found out she could stream it to her laptop so as the dutiful fan she was she woke herself up and dragged herself down to the lounge about two to three times a week. She had on her normal early morning pj ensemble of baggy black sweats that were far to long for her. As she walked they devoured her feet and made nifty built in slippers or at least that was how she saw it. On her top she had on her over sized quicksilver baby blue t-shirt that hung to right above her knees. Had it been a warmer time of the year the sweats would have been gone and she would just were her tiny boy shorts under them but it was getting a built chillier in the fall then the Hawaiian liked it. Her hair was a mess pulled back in a sloppy ponytail and her bangs were falling every which way. She looked special...

She plodded her way down the hall to the lounge and the normal quietness of the lounge area. She stopped in the door way and scanned the room. She recognized the young Guthrie girl. And the blonde looked familiar but names were not clicking for her yet. Her lips puckered as she let a soft blow of air out of her lips to knock the bangs to someplace better then her eyes. “Wow...people.” It was the best she could muster in her half asleep daze. Her eyes danced from one to the other and she chose her seat and placed her laptop on a table and rested her chin on her hands which had curled into small fists to support her. “So did I miss the invite or this a super secret mutant sorority party after mid night bash.” It didn't really click to Lani that one of the girls looked like she was trying to sleep, if you looked semi-alive and around her she had an internal compulsion to make small talk and be friendly to people. It was part of her charming personality or at least she felt it was.

Melody could fall asleep pretty much anywhere.

The armchair was a lot more comfortable than the chair she'd crashed in at the study lounge earlier that night. It wasn't long before she started dozing off. It didn't last long. She didn't wake up at the footsteps through the room. It wasn't until the door slammed shut that she startled awake. She looked around in confusion, and stared in a blank, sleep-dazed way at the blond girl for a moment.

"Yeah.. no, its fine, Ah wasn't sleepin' that well anyway," she said, shifting to a more comfortable position. Maybe she should stretch out on the couch instead. But curling up was warmer.. The teenager was definitely not taking this interruption of her nap as a wake up call. She was going to go back to sleep and that was that. She did not want to be all zombie-ish in the morning.

However her chances of getting to sleep again looked to be slim, as another student stumbled into the girls lounge. Melody yawned and tried to sink further into the cushions. The girl.. she thought her name was Alanna or something - that couldn't be right but whatever - decided to start chattering anyway. How anyone could be so bubbly this early was beyond her. It was like.. hours and hours before dawn.

"Ah just locked myself out of my room," she mumbled, looking between the girls drowsily. If they were staying up she wanted to steal one of their beds or something.

Sally nodded as Melody said that she wasn’t sleeping well anyways and then turned to look towards the other girl that was entering the room. She shifted uneasily as Alani walked across the lounge, taking a seat and setting up a laptop. Glancing towards the hallway that she had come from, she considered leaving out as quickly as she had came in. ”No sorority here… that I know of anyways,” she said in reply to Alani’s comment, not really appreciating what she thought was a sarcastic amount of energy for this time of morning.

She then looked back to Melody as she walked up behind the nearest chair, placing her hands on it’s back so that she could lean upon it. Tilting her head slightly, she raised a brow. ”You are locked out of your room? Why don’t you just knock on the door? Or go get whoever is on the security detail to open it for you?” Sally asked.

True, she was new to the place. She had only arrived on Monday. But since she had kept to herself so far, she had had plenty of time to read over the policies and rules for the school. She was probably more familiar with them than they were, since she had just read them. Right? Or was she just a nerd? Ugh.

”But… yea… I didn’t know that we could hang out after our curfew in here,” Sally continued, walking over and choosing a seat that was to the left of both Alani and Melody. ”I’m Skids. Just got here two days ago. So sorry if I haven’t said anything to either of you before now… I’m just trying to learn my way around here and get used to the schedule. I haven’t ever really been in a place like this before.” Sally explained, offering them both a small smile.

Her eyes darted back and forth as she leaned back into her chair and placed her arms behind her head. She was use to being up at this ungodly hour it looked like Melody was not though. The blonde seemed to miss her joke a bit, but it was like two AM so it was what ever. She smiled and went with it letting it slide without much of a comment at all. The girl went over about all the things they could do by the rule book to get her back in her room, but Lani felt like that would be a lot of work at this hour of the morning. “I phase...sort of. I could swim through and let you in, I just have a minor power flaw. I'm great at taking objects apart to get through them, it's the putting them back together that I kinda good up on and tend to leave ashes in my wake. So if you hate your door...I can play lock and key for you.” Lani offered a half serious and half playful smile. She wasn't sure how the staff would feel if she did that, and sadly it was kind of hard to blame someone else when destroying stuff is the MO that followed her around.

The other girl offered up her name was Skids and that she was new to the Xavier Crew. Lani flashed her a friendly smile, was never to early to be friendly she figured. And who knew this Skids could be the next cool thing, or just a friend worth having. She offered a hand to the new girl. “I'm Alani or just Lani. I've been here a for a second or two. And I promise you will never get use to this place. One moment it all seems like a normal high school. Then some kid burps a fireball and you need a new tree out front. It's an adventure.” The last part led to a huge grin to sprawl across her face. Lani was all for adventure if she couldn't surf, then she wanted to go on adventures. And in up state New York the surfing sucked... “So Skids. That your real name? What do you? Where from? All that good stuff.” It had become her normal new kid meet and greet, find out who they are, where from and what cool things they can do. New powers could mean new exploits, and who knew where those would lead too!

After listening to Alani’s explanation of her mutant powers, she looked to Melody for a moment to gauge her reaction to that, and then she looked again to Alani. She then reached out to Alani’s hand and gave it a single shake before retracting her hand back to her lap. ”Good to meet you… uh… Lani,” she said with a smile, looking away from the girl for a moment as she decided which one to call her. She then looked back to her as she explained that it was hard to get used to this place because of all of the off the wall things that were happening. ’Well… it sounds like I’m going to meet plenty of interesting people. Present company included."

“So, Skids. That your real name? What do you do? Where you from? All that good stuff,” Alani asked.

Sally shifted in her seat a bit at the questions before raising up a hand to move that annoying strand of hair out of her eyes. It fell right back into place as she began her answer. ”Well… My dad always called me Skids… and my friends back home picked up on it too. But my real name is Sally,” she explained, glancing at Melody. She hoped that she wasn’t intruding too much on the Guthrie sister. She was trying to get some sleep after all. Also, she had never really explained her powers to anyone other than her mother and her guidance counselor. ”I can create a force field around myself. When I do, it is ultra-slippery and I slide around,” she said, shifting in her seat once again. ”Usually it just makes me fall down a lot when it comes up when I don’t want it to. But hopefully… people here can help me control it… or find a way to make is useful. I don’t know..”

Sally looked down to her lap, bringing her hands together in order to pop her knuckles. She wasn‘t used to being around new people that were so curious. But she would make it through it.. ”And I’m from a town called McMinnville, Tennessee. It is a little farming town on the west side of Tennessee, close to Alabama. It was hit pretty hard by the floods from all of those hurricanes not too long ago. Which, I guess led me to being here.” she explained, looking up from her lap back to the other girls. ”What about you? Your accent sounds familiar,” Sally said, looking to Melody. ”You’re from the south too?”

"..." Melody stared at Sally in sleep dazed confusion. "If Ah tried to wake Lee up to let me in I'd end up wakin' up half the dorm.. and... Ah didn't think about goin' to security," she admitted honestly. So what? She was half asleep. No one could expect sense out of her.

"We're not supposed to hang out in here after curfew. Ah'm only in here 'cause Ah couldn't get into my room," the fifteen year old explained, sitting up in her seat unhappily. She would not be able to nap in here if they insisted on chatting. She sorta wanted to throw something at Alani, her chipper voice was grating on Mel this early in the morning. Maybe her shoe.

Despite her thoughts, the young Guthrie girl just frowned at the chattering girl. The joke on turning her door to ashes was lost on her; the brunette just shook her head. You would not get a smile out of a sleep deprived Melody.

There was slight interest while the girls were introducing each other and their powers, despite the annoying perkyness crowding the room. They were different than what she'd heard of so far in her year at Xavier's.

"Yeah... Ah'm from Cumberland County in Kentucky. And Ah fly." A quirk of her brows. Maybe her power wasn't flashy but it was the coolest in existence in her opinion. After a few moments she realized she hadn't introduced herself. "Melody's my name. Ah'm sure you'll get a grip on your powers soonish."

Lani gave a wide grin as Skids called her interesting company. She did very much like the sound of it, and she tried to always be interesting. She hated the idea of wasting her life away being boring. She made a few mental notes about her real name being Sally, Skids was a whole lot more exciting though and the whole from Tennessee thing didn't excite her much either. Land locked states sounded like prison to the Hawaiian. But her powers, now those sparked the curiosity of Lani. She leaned forward on the table looking at Skids.

“So you have like a built in slip and slide system? Like you can just surf across the ground... that...that...that...that..is the coolest thing ever! I would give anything to be able to surf anywhere... can I see?” She looked over at the new girl hopeful. It was an odd request but she was legitimately excited about the prospect of seeing what this force field did...and if it could extended to others then well Lani may have found a surfing buddy! “Curfew...pftt. I haven't listened to those since I was like five.” She said with a shrug. The idea of curfew and being told when she could and couldn't leave her room drove her insane. She wasn't a rule breaker...she just normally chose to ignore the ones she found stupid. And curfew was one of them. Melody chirped in that she could fly...more cool powers! “I've always wanted to know this. With all the fliers around here do you just like wake up floating one night or did you just randomly jump off a building? How do you find out that you have the ability to fly? Like that most be so awesonlycrazycoolness!”

She paused and took a deep breath as she took in all the new information. She knew of the young Guthrie girl but the two had never really spoken much so this was her first time really getting to know a bit about her.

Skids nodded to Melody and then motioned one time towards Alani once with her head. ”Well, half the dorm might get woken up anyways if we keep at it in here,” she said with a smile. ”Kentucky is a nice state. I’ve been through it quite a few times when I used to go visit my grandmother, but I’ve never really stopped to see the sites…”

She stopped short to listen to Alani, who seemed to find both her and Melody’s powers super cool. Skids raised a brow as Alani chose to describe Melody’s ability as “awesomelycrazycoolness,” glancing once again to Melody with an amused smirk. Nodding to Alani, she agreed. ”Yea… flying does sound like… that. But I don’t really see anything special about my force field. Like I said, I usually end up falling, but I guess I am getting a little better. Never had anyone ask me to see it though,” Skids said, standing up from her seat. ”So I guess I can… just don’t laugh at me if I fall.”

Moving a few steps away from the other two girls, Skids activated her force field. Since her mutant powers had spawned a couple of years ago, she was beginning to get the hang of making the force field appear when she wanted it to. It still sometimes came up when she didn’t want it to, but hey, she couldn’t always have what she wanted.

Almost immediately, Skids began to slid across the floor, attempting to keep her balance as if someone had just put her on an ice skating rink while wearing bananas for shoes. She slipped a few times, catching herself, and then her body spun around. Sliding towards the couch she had leaned on just a minute or so earlier, she reached out to catch herself. However, the frictionless force field prevented her from doing so and she fell behind the couch with a resounding “THUMP!”

A second later, Sally got up from behind the couch, throwing both of the girls a sheepish smile. ”See? Jeez… I still don’t expect it to be as slippery as it is, and I can’t grab anything to keep myself up. Ugh. It’s a stupid power compared to flying,” Skids said, silently wishing she could do that instead. Actually there were a lot of other mutant powers at this school that sounds cool. At least they didn’t have a problem with busting their ass when they activated it.

Yeah...

They just weren't thinking. And besides her energy level, Melody was definitely feeling a dislike for this Alani girl. Mainly for her blatant disregard for rules... regardless of the reasoning behind a rule, if everyone else had to follow it and you just refused to, it was like you thought you were better than everyone else. Honestly Melody wasn't sure whether they were really allowed in here or not during curfew, but she knew that if they were out here they better be quiet and not wake people up.

Even if they didn't get in trouble, it was just terribly rude for them to be so noisey. Melody was used to living with a lot of people. If you woke everyone up in the middle of the night, not only would you get in trouble, everyone'd be pissed off. So much. It wasn't like this was the weekend. People had to get up in the morning. Ugh. Morning. Soon, much too soon.

The young teen rolled her eyes at the excited comment about her powers. "Well... my brothers and sisters have cooler powers. And Ah tend to, not land on my feet," she said, mostly for Sally's benefit after the girl admitted to her slidey problems. Frowning at Lani, she shook her head. She didn't need to get grilled about her powers at two am. Seriously. Mel stood up and stretched. "Ah'll talk to you 'bout that in the mornin'. Maybe. If you take some sedatives."

"Ah'm just... gonna see if Ah can't get someone to let me into my room," Melody said quietly. It hadn't been so bad just dozing there, but a few hours more of sleep would be necessary for her to function at all the next day. She'd probably fall asleep during a class or something as it was.

Before she reached the door, Sally's display of powers ended in a crash. "Oh, are you okay?" she asked, turning back to the girl wide eyed. It had been pretty loud. Sounded like it hurt. The girl's sheepish smile caused a smile to tug at Melody's mouth. "Ah crash a lot too... less now, but Ah still do sometimes."

Late night or early morning, which term was correct? Jayson looked at her alarm clock. Some time after 2am definitely fit the bill as too early. If her mind worked this early she would have compared the question to someone asking whether the cup was half empty or half full. Really a matter of perspective, wasn't it?

It took no more than a minute for Jayson to reach the girls' lounge from when loud voices and a thump woke her up. Being the RA meant she got the lovely room right next to the lounge. Being an X-man meant she was trained to get up and get ready in a moments notice.

Even though it wasn't against curfew to be in the lounge, it was against the rules to be loud. Not everyone slept or could sleep so the lounges provided a few of the students a chance to get out of their dorms so they wouldn't run the halls and spend late nights in the kitchen. However, that number of students was small. Most were now sleeping or real quiet at their computers in their dorms.

One of the loud students, Loa Jayson thought due to the markings, skipped by her in the hall. If there weren't more students in the lounge she would have stopped her. Crossing her arms, Jayson stopped in the doorway behind Melody Guthrie. Part of the door and wall right next to it were in ashes. Being in too much of a hurry Loa had run past Melody after a power cord. She suddenly remembered about the surf tournament but her battery was dying and the cord was in her dorm. Once Jayson started to speak to the others in the lounge she was sure Loa wouldn't return lest she got in more trouble.

"So, what is important that you couldn't wait until morning to share it?" Jayson asked. Her arms were still crossed across her chest. She wore an over-sized light blue t-shirt and shorts. Not wanting to appear threatening Jayson pulled on a pair of half-gloves which covered her fingers and matched her pyjamas in color. Her feet were bare.

"Miss Guthrie, Miss Blevins, is there an issue I might be able to help solve or will you keep trying to wake-up your fellows?" Jayson continued in an even voice. Lights flicked on in the dorms closest to the lounge. A door opened to a crack. It was then that Jayson saw Sally on the ground.

"Here let me help you up," she said walking around Melody. A gloved hand was extended. She hoped Sally wouldn't touch her skin. Jayson would be sure that wouldn't happen. "Are you hurt?"

Ugh. She had done it again. Sally sat up and looked around, glad that she hadn’t hit and broken anything as she fell. Besides the loud thud, she didn’t see anything wrong with the room. Her shield was a nuisance that made her fall but thankfully, it also kept her from getting hurt when she hit the ground. She nodded to Melody as she said that she crashed a lot. ”Well, thankfully I haven’t gotten hurt yet,” Sally started, but then stopped short as the light suddenly came on in the room.

Jayson was suddenly standing over her with her arms crossed, looking imposing whether she meant to or not. Sally peeked towards where Loa was sitting, seeing that the girl had disappeared. She then looked back to Jayson. ”So, what is so important that you couldn’t wait until the morning to share it?” Jayson asked, looking at them both. Sally glanced at Melody. ”Miss Guthrie, Miss Blevins, is there an issue I might be able to help solve or will you keep trying to wake-up your fellows?”

Jayson then approached her and held out a hand. ”Here, let me help you up,” the X-man said. Sally took the hand and stood. ”Are you hurt?”

Sally shook her head as she came to her feet. ”No ma’am, I’m fine,” Sally replied, casting a glance towards the cracked door, Melody, and then finally back to Jayson. ”I think that Melody was locked out of her room and I went to the bathroom… and when I came out I walked down here to get a drink and saw her asleep… and then we just kind of started talking and then I slipped and fell,” Sally explained in one breath. She had always tried her best to not get into any trouble and hopefully she wasn’t in any now. However, now it was a little different since she didn’t have a dad to take the news home to.

”But it was me being loud… Melody was trying to go to sleep. I’m sorry if I woke anyone up,” she said the last part just a little louder, turning to look towards the cracked door again. The door abruptly closed and then Sally looked to Jayson again. ”So yea… sorry…” she said again, looking down.

Melody's arms crossed. She frowned at Jayson. While she knew that they shouldn't have been making noise this late, and the RA had every reason to be upset about being woken up, her words set something off.

"No 'is anyone hurt?' just straight off into lecture mode?" she snapped back at the woman. Okay, she was tired, and that made her grumpy too. She probably shouldn't talk back. But she was peeved at the woman's assumption that they were getting into trouble. And the fact was that Sally had fallen down and she could've gotten hurt. Jayson seemed to have honed in on that the girl was on the ground however and went to help her up.

"Yeah. Ah just couldn't find my key, so Ah thought Ah'd nap in here. Skids just slipped and fell. Ah don't know why that.. other girl ran off like that," she said, as the blond girl explained their presence out of their rooms. Looked like she was trying to make sure Mel didn't get in trouble for what happened. But Melody didn't think either of them should get in trouble.

Skids shouldn't have let the other girl convince her to show off her powers at this particular time and place, but it wasn't her fault she fell like that. It wasn't like she did it on purpose.

"Ah'm sorry we woke you up, but we weren't tryin' to do anythin'," Mel added. Her arms were still folded. She just wanted to go to bed, but hell if she was going to put up with someone accusing them of something that wasn't true. It wasn't like they were blasting the TV and jumping on the damn furniture or something. "If you can get me into my room Ah'd appreciate it."
