11:00 AM

Yawning, Mark threw his arms up in the air. Still lying in bed, he looked at his digital clock to find out that it was already ten in the morning. Rubbing his eyes, he stood up and tried to blink away his blurry vision. Pulling the curtains open of his window on his side of the room, he saw that the sun was rising high in the sky, but it did not look too hot at all. Scratching the back of his neck, he walked over to his small trash can. There, he pulled down his boxers, almost peeing; until he realized that this wasn't the bathroom. Quickly, he pulled up his boxers and ran out the door.

Coming back to his dorm from the bathroom, he looked at the calendar. Today was the twenty-first of September, and it was also his.... birthday?!?!? "I'm eighteen! Oh, wait.... nineteen." He shouted, not caring if he woke his roommate up. He turned back to see him, but his side of the room was all clean, and no one was there. Well, Mark did wake up late, Kevin was probably out and about at this time of day already. Anyway, Mark now had the room to himself for the morning. So... he started dancing around his room like a little kid on their birthday.

Just a few moments after, he found a white piece of paper on the floor next to the door. Someone must have slipped it under. Going over to pick it up, he read that it said: "To DJ, From Magma." Oh, it was the girl that he met on the very first day of arriving at the school. What was her name again.... oh, Amara. That day, they told each other to be called by their code-names. Magma was very simple, yet powerful. DJ just sounded so... musical. Well, he decided to read the letter now. On the other side of the note, it said:

Happy 19th Birthday, DJ!
Be at the beach by 11 AM.
That is weird, Mark was expecting maybe twenty bucks or so. He's just so used to getting money for his birthday, but it was probably different here. Birthdays probably had sentimental value, and was about the inside, not what was on the outside. Looking at the clock again, it was already 10:45 AM !! All he did was pee and dance, how did it already pass forty-five minutes since he had woken up at ten? Quickly, he ran to the bathroom and took a three minute shower. In his room, he threw his towel and dirty clothes onto the floor, going through his closet for something, at least, nice.

Rushing out the door to the back of the mansion, he was thinking about the beach. He had been there for two months, but has only visited the waters only about once. Even then, he didn't really stay for fun, just to see what all the commotion was. Finally reaching the entry way for the beach, he looked at his clock to realize that it was already 11:15 AM. Fifteen minutes late wouldn't hurt anything, would it? There, he saw Magma sitting at a bench. "Oh, hey! Am I late?" Did she just want to congratulate him happy birthday?

Kallen wasn’t one at all for big celebrations. Normally, he would be sitting in the corner concerned with one hand on a drink and the other in his pocket. For some reason, however, Kallen felt like it would be a good opportunity for him to break out of his shell a tad bit, while celebrating the birthday of a new student he had just really started to get along with. It was Mark’s birthday after all, and it was the beach. Who didn’t love the beach?

He collected what he needed for the beach, including a volleyball. It had been a while since he played beach volleyball, something he really enjoyed when he had leisurely time with his old friends. For a minute it depressed him, thinking about the group he used to spend most of his time with, laughing and playing. It was only after they found out about his mutant abilities that they turned their backs on him quicker than a child gets tired of new toys.

Still, he knew this was a new life with new experiences. The people at Xavier’s had been nothing but friendly to him in the past four years. Perhaps it was time for him to forget the feelings of rejection and begin a life anew with the people that didn’t care about anything but who he was on the inside. That sounded nice.

Upon packing his things in a woven duffel bag, he cringed at almost forgetting the small brown bag he had carefully wrapped for Mark as his birthday present. He wasn’t very good at guessing what people would like, and he hoped that what he had gotten Mark would be somewhat useful. A good book, a sudoku pad or a subscription to Science Magazine would be something he would normally get someone, he figured that not everyone would be into what he liked. Instead, he bought something relatively close to what he read on Mark’s student profile.

Kallen had just picked up his yellow Jeep from his parents’ house. He had left it there thinking that he wouldn’t need it in the school, but found out quickly that he missed it more than anything he had possessed before. Not necessarily for the sake of just having a car, but for the good memories it gave him and as well as the good ones he knew he would have later on.

Besides, what better way was there to get through the sandy beach than running through it in a Jeep? He parked his car in a spot he thought was fitting and jumped out of the door-less car. He picked up his duffel bag and a picnic basket from the back of his car and headed over to the others who had already been there. He had arrived early to make sure that he would be there for Mark’s arrival.

“When do you think he’s going to get here?” he asked the beautiful blonde girl in his thick English accent. “I hope I’ve got enough time to set this fast before he arrives.”

Kallen quickly opened the picnic basket and laid down a big plaid blanket. Luckily the winds weren’t too strong (for a beach breeze anyways) and he managed to put a shoe on at least two of the corners, the picnic basket on one and his duffel bag on the other. He had brought some soda, mineral water and some chips and dip. As far as he knew he wasn’t in charge of any of the important parts, but he sure would have those just in case.

Without even thinking he took off his linen shirt, leaving him with his white linen pants and bare feet. He took out the volleyball he had in his duffel bag and began to practice setting while he waited for the birthday boy. The present wrapped up neatly in a box with a tag simply reading ‘Happy Birthday Mark! Hope it’s a lovely one with more to come. Sincerely, Kallen’ was placed next on top of the blanket. He couldn’t wait to see the reaction on Mark’s face when he opened his present of a new Ultrasone Eiditon 9 headphones that were sold out everywhere. Kallen at least knew that he was into music, and he hoped that Mark would enjoy it.

He saw the birthday boy, fifteen minutes later arriving to his birthday celebration. Kallen put placed the volleyball on his hip, holding it with his left forearm as he handed out his left hand to the boy who was celebrating his last year as a teenager.

“Happy Birthday Mark!” he said, with that English grin he was so famous for.

It seemed like it was just yesterday that Amara had met Mark Sheppard, DJ. He was one of the newest students at the institute, and his power was to manipulate energy into force fields, bolts of energy.. And anything of the sort. And even though he had only been at the institute for a month, give or take, his birthday had already came. It felt like it was just so.. So quick. Though, Amara's first few months at the institute before her birthday flew by as well. She turned sixteen the year she came to the institute, and that was also about the time that she was beginning to come out of her shell.

One of the things that Amara was known for at the institute was that she was one of the earliest risers, and that she always had the same morning routine. Provided that it didn't rain anyway. And even though the sun had been shining on this day, Amara decided that her routine should be different. She decided that today, the birthday of her young friend Mark, should be celebrated. She remembered that a few times that she had her birthday at the institute and she was around Mark's age - a little younger, probably - they had thrown her what was known as a birthday party. Well. She would do the same for Mark.

That wasn't really surprising for the Nova Roman, she always protected, respected, and definitely tried to please her friends when it came to that stuff, that wasn't doubted. At least, Amara didn't doubt it. She wasn't sure if others did, but she didn't at the very least. Early in the morning, probably around eight or so, Amara had went into Mark's room bright and early on this Tuesday. His roommates were gone to classes for the day, but Mark stayed planted in the bed. That wasn't really surprising, to be honest. It was his birthday. Amara expected him to skip. She couldn't think of a student who went to classes on their birthdays, yet.

And then throughout the day, Amara went through planning phases of a birthday party. It would all happen at eleven, around lunch time. Okay. The formal word for it was "Brunch", but that really didn't matter. At about 10:50 AM, Amara was at the beach and waiting for the birthday boy. She expected him to at least be a little late... And not wake up until the sun shone in his eyes. That just seemed to be the type of person that Mark was, lazy to the core and could probably sleep his life away. Unless he was awake anyway, then he was as active as possible.

At 11:15, she finally heard.. "Oh, hey! Am I late?" The blond turned and faced the dark haired boy and nodded her head. "Perhaps just a little."

To be honest, she felt out of place. As Sally looked around the beach, she could honestly say that she didn’t know most of the people that had gathered. She knew a few of them by their face, having a class or two with them, but she was still working on names. All she knew is that a girl in her last class said “free cake” and she followed, since it was lunch break. Sally knew the birthday boy about as well as she knew everyone else here. Mark, she thought his name was. At least, that is what she saw on the cake before he arrived.

She stood near where Kallen had laid out the blanket and had put some of the food. She wasn’t wearing anything special. It was just a light blue shirt with the words “McMinnville Marching Band” on the front and a picture of her old high school’s mascot on the back, along with the names of everyone who was on the marching band in 2009. Had she known she would have been attending a birthday party today, perhaps she would have worn a little bit better outfit. For now, she had kicked her flip flops off and stood barefoot in the sand, enjoying the heat.

Mark came down from the school and entered the beach area, causing everyone to pull their attention away from what they were doing and focus on him. He asked if he was late and Amara answered him. Kellen approached Mark holding a gift, which immediately made Sally feel self-conscious. She turned to the nearest student and whispered, ”I didn’t bring anything.” The other student said that she had only a card. At least that was something.

After Mark was greeted by his closer friends, she decided to approach him and wish him happy birthday as well. ”Happy birthday, Mark. I’m Sally… and I just wanted to say sorry for not getting you anything. I didn’t know it was your birthday until about… oh…” Sally looked down at her wrist. There was no watch there. ”Ten minutes ago or so.”

Arriving at the scene, Mark noticed that Kallen was also there. The older student was standing there in some board shorts, nothing else. Looking up at the sun, it was reasonable, they were at the beach anyways. Mark looked down at himself, noticing that he was wearing some green shorts and sandals, with just a white, wife-beater covering his torso. He wasn't really sure if it would be the hottest day ever, since it was the end of September, meaning that autumn is pretty much arriving now. Taking his dark-tinted shades off, he waved back to Kallen. "Thanks, dude!" Mark decided that he'll maybe play some volleyball after he greets everyone else.

However, there was one thing that was bothering his mind. Why was Kallen still a student? Sure, he wanted to get the most knowledge, doing so by still taking classes. But if Mark was him, he would have wanted to graduated immediately. Once graduated, he could have probably been an X-Man by now. That was Mark's dream and main goal here, to become an X-Man. Not just to have that title of being worthy, but being able to go out into the community to help problems, fight bad guys, feel... good. Kallen probably just wanted to be really experienced before taking the next step.

Looking back at Magma, Mark laughed when she said that he was a bit late. "Late to my own...." By observing the cake on the picnic table, he realized that it must have been a small party that Magma had put together. "...party?" Mark knew that it was a party, just wanted to make sure. "Thanks, Magma." He approached her, with his arms out for a hug. Giving hugs was really good, it meant that you were comfortable enough with a person. After their hug, a girl, that Mark has seen around a few times before, had approached.

Mark has only been here for almost two months, but he knows who everyone is; he just doesn't really know everyone. She was blonde, looked a bit younger than himself, but was still rather cute. "Oh... hey, Sally. Yeah, I've seen you around before. I just don't understand why I've never spoken with you though." Mark sweetly smiled at her, "It's fine. I'm just glad you came." Going over to the picnic blanket, he noticed a present of some sorts. Reading it, it was from Kallen. Opening it, all he could do was gasp, eyes opening wide.

Without looking back and still staring at the Ultrasone Eiditon 9 headphones, "Kallen!"

That was all he needed. The look that Mark had on his face when he opened the present, even if his eyes kept locked on the gift was priceless. He didn’t know much about musical equipment, but he did know what was selling high on the market. It cost him a few pretty pennies to get the goods for the young man, but the money wasn’t what mattered.

Since Kallen was young, he had always been taught to work for what he had. Sure he was a full-time student and was on the X-Men team, but Kallen somehow still found time to drive over to his parents’ lab in New York to help out with whatever new devices or genetic discoveries they may have come up with. The job pays fabulously, and even though Kallen didn’t need to work because his parents’ financial backup, they made him to teach the valuable ethics.

He found that the advice his parents gave were always wise and beneficial. Another thing they taught him was to never expect anything back when he decided to give something. Except, in this situation, he had already gotten what he wanted back in return: Mark’s birthday to get off on a good start.

“Like it?” Kallen asked almost sarcastically. “I was hoping you could find some kind of use for it but I wasn’t sure.”

Once again, that infectious smile. In the back of his head, however, he hoped that he didn’t make the other students that were around feel uncomfortable, especially Sally who had apologized for not having brought anything. He glanced over to her direction, and walked a little towards her, putting a hand on her shoulder and another ready to take in hers.

“Hi, I’m Kallen, by the way,” he said to her. Kallen had read her file, but he hadn’t introduced himself yet. There he hoped that her first impression of him wouldn’t be arrogance. Oh how he despised that.
