September 1st Lunch Period Class over. Lunch time. Get going. Surge zipped past the students in the halls, blue static trailing from the heals of her sneakers. She was heading for the cafeteria. She was burning off a little extra power before lunch. She didn't like standing in line when she had a full charge going. The dangers of playing with electronics in science class were minimal to most, but not when you forget to adjust the settings on your regulator gauntlets to minimize electrical absorption. It took her three seconds to get to the dining hall from the second floor. She grabbed her tray and headed off. Nori set down her tray full of food and plopped down into her chair at the customary table. Leaning her head back, she closed her eyes for a second. The first half of her day was over. A few more classes and she'd have some downtime. She looked down at her lunchtime spread. A cheeseburger and a few fries, plus a bottle of water. She didn't have to eat much, her body gained energy off of the electricity she absorbed, and so lunchtime here at Xavier's had never really been about enjoying a midday feast as much as it was gossip and chit-chat time outside of the prying ears and eyes of the faculty. She dug in, chowing down on some fries as she waited for the others to arrive. Her thoughts passed to the latest subject of school-wide discussion. Josh Foley had done a number on Julian Keller, supposedly in return to a similar treatment that Keller had visited on Foley's room mate. Just the thought of Keller being battered and bruised, finally paying for some dickheaded move he'd made brought the slightest of smiles to her lips. Keller had it coming, had it coming a long time before this. She had sympathy for the kid, not that she would ever admit it, but really. All that breeding and not a thing to do with it. He'd resorted to being your typical cookie cutter spoiled rich kid. She had her own reasons for wanting to plant a boot firmly up his ass, but she was happy to see that somebody had beaten her to it. It was just too bad Elixir had to get into trouble for doing what she considered a favor to the world. Continuing on her food, she wiped her gauntlets on her pants, having forgotten to grab a wad of napkins on the way to the table. Looking around with a mouth full of food, she must have looked comical to anybody creepy enough to be sitting and watching her eat. She cracked open the bottle of water and had it half gone in a matter of seconds, placing it back by her tray and continuing her midday refueling. |

Ah, lunch time. Quite possibly one of Laurie's favourite parts of the day. Honestly, the girl loved food. Lived for food. Sandwiches, spaghetti, tacos, cheeseburgers, cereal, fruit, anything. She loved it all. And because of that, she generally ate large meals. Breakfast was usually always cereal, toast and a fruit of some sort, mostly apples, pears or strawberries. Lunch probably involved either some sort of fast food meal, like the classic burger and fries with a milkshake, and a salad. But dinner was the largest meal. She always got the main course, some sort of massive side dish, and a desert. And of course her late-night snacks of chips or sandwiches. When thinking about it, Laurie was actually surprised she was as thin as she was. Thank heavens for fast metabolisms, or she'd probably be in the 200-pound range by now. So, when the bell rang to signal the end of class and the beginning of lunch, Laurie hopped up from her chair and bolted out of the classroom. Her stomach had begun to growl about halfway through that last class, and Laurie absolutely hated the feeling of hunger. The minute her stomach started to make angry noises at her for neglecting it, she wanted to satiate it. She wanted her stomach to be happy, not angry or sad. When she reached the cafeteria, she breathed a sigh of relief. Even the smell of food was making her mouth water at this point. Waiting in line was hell, especially as hungry as the girl was. She ordered quickly when it was her turn, and painstakingly waited for her meal to be prepared. Why did she have to order something that wasn't pre-made? Dammit girl, stop prolonging your hunger. When it was finally ready, she eagerly grabbed the food and looked around the cafeteria for a place to sit. This part was always awkward. She never really had any idea what to do - sit by herself, ask to join someone, or what have you. So, she walked around and looked around awkwardly, until she noticed the familiar blue hair of her friend Noriko. She smiled in relief and headed over to join the girl at her table, where she knew she would always be welcome. When she reached the table the plopped down her tray and sat across from her friend. "Hey friend," she said with a small smile. Of course Nori had already reached the cafeteria and dug into her food, she was probably one of the first students out of class aside from speedsters. She laughed a little as she caught Nori with a mouthful of food. "That's attractive," she said in between chuckles. laurie looked down at her tray, excited to dig in herself. She had accumulated a grilled cheese sandwich, some cream of mushroom soup and a caesar salad with a bottle of water. She rubbed her hands together, quite excited for the delicious feast that was only a bite away. Being kind of picky about her food, Laurie had to eat the different parts of her meal one by one, deciding today to begin with the grilled cheese - it would take just long enough for the hot soup to cool down just a bit. "So what's on your mind?" she asked conversationally after taking a bite out of her sandwich. She knew that, while her favourite part of lunch was the actual food, Nori's was the opportunity to gossip. Laurie wasn't really the gossip type, but she did enjoy humouring the girl every once in a while. That being said, she knew that at some point during this lunch conversation the situation between Josh Foley and Julian Keller would arise. After all, it was the latest scandal making its way around the school. Quite frankly, Laurie was on Josh's side of the argument. Keller deserved everything he got for what he did to her best friend. She would have done it herself if she had the balls. Which she didn't. |

Well, today was his birthday. The red winged teen finally got out of the teenage years and hit the big two-oh. That's right Jay Guthrie was finally 20 years old, not that he was making a big deal out of it. He enjoyed peaceful things, even though most of the last few days have been rather great to him. He started his online college courses which so far were rather easy, he began writing a new song that was coming out nicely, he and particular someone were getting very close, and heck even the mandatory classes that the school had to help deal with their mutant problems seemed to be going better. Everything had just been great, and he couldn't ask for a nicer birthday gift. Mostly because he hadn't asked for a birthday gift from anyone. Come to think of it, he wasn't sure if he has really told anyone it was his birthday today. Heck if it weren't for ma calling him this morning and sang 'Happy Birthday' with the twins for a wake up call, he probably would have forgotten. Not that Jeb seemed to forget cause he was immediately ready to give Jay 20 birthday punches, the red head gave him one in return and that kind of ended that for the morning. Over the last few hours Jay had been in the library working on some of his classes online, since he didn't have the traditional schedule like most of the high school based students here. It felt kind of odd, he wasn't really 'one' of them anymore. Though that didn't stop him from enjoying the free lunches, despite the fact that he got a peanut butter and jelly sandwich today rather than some sort of hot meal like most of the students got. Nothing beat a good PB&J, especially with chips and a soda pop. He took his little meal and looked around to find seats. Luckily he found some, and they happened to be at the same table two people he already knew were sitting at. Laurie and Noriko. "Hey ladies, don't mind me sittin' here do ya?" Jay asked as he took a seat and set his food down, feeling a bit weird since they both had nice big hot lunches, and he had something he had been eating since before he even started school. Jay was more or less all smiles, and was partially irradiating his good mood. Luckily he didn't have Laurie's powers, or half the school would be smiling like they were high on something. Not that Jay was high... "So how you two doing on this first of many fine September days?" He asked. |

She nodded to Laurie as she sat down, trying to talk through a mouth full of food wasn’t her thing, though, so she gave herself a second to finish and then looked at the blonde sitting across from her. “Whats goin, on Laurie?” asked the electrohead. Sitting the burger down, she leaned back in her seat, slouching down, brown eyes shooting across the room for a second or two. It was obvious she still had copious amounts of energy built up. Thoughts of her previous class were still eating holes in her brain, too. Her thoughts passed to her homework, how much she despised biology at this point, and the test they were supposed to have before the week was out. Base pairs, which ones were which and how they hooked up, they all just confused her lately. ”So whats on your mind?” Laurie asked through a mouthful of grilled cheese. Nori let out a sigh and sat forward in her chair. “My mind? I hate uracil.” She finally barked out at random. “I think it only exists to confuse me into thinking DNA should have it.” She took another chomp off of her burger, chewing away and washing it down with a chug from the water bottle. “Bio test before the weekend.” She tapped on her head with her free hand. “Not ready by a longshot.” Surge had known Laurie for perhaps the longest out of any student at the Institute, save for Julian Keller, who she met first but would ultimately claim last when it came right down to it. She liked Laurie, she saw her as level headed and kind hearted, something the world could always use more of. Laurie lived up to her name, Wallflower. It took her a long time to get close, and indeed it had been the same with Noriko when they first met. Surge usually did the most talking when the two came together to hang out, and whether that was due to Laurie simply humoring her or not, she probably never even thought about. Surge liked to express her feelings on pretty much everything she encountered, and Laurie was a really good listener. Perhaps that’s why they got along so well. “What about y-“ She cut herself off when Jay Guthrie arrived at their table. She smiled to him and waved him on down towards a seat. “What’s up, Jay? How goes it?” He replied, asking them how the day was going. “Biology is hurting my brain. I was gonna ask Foley for help, but, well…ya know.” |

The blonde settled herself into the chair comfortably, preparing for a long lunch session. She had a lot of food and she much preferred to eat slowly rather than just wolf everything down. If she took her time she would be full for a lot longer, and would therefore be able to make it through the rest of her classes without her stomach interrupting her work. Oh sure, they were only allotted a certain period of time for lunch in between their classes, and Laurie intended to make use of every single minute. She munched on her bit of grilled cheese very slowly as she listened to Nori, and begrudgingly swallowed when she had to answer. "Not much actually, I've had a pretty slow week," she said conversationally. "I just had a Chem quiz, think I did pretty good," she said earnestly before taking another bite out of her grilled cheese. She chuckled as she listened to her friend go on about uracil and other such biology nonsense. Laurie had always enjoyed the subject, personally. She had the same Bio test as Nori, but she had prepared herself a little better. Hours of studying paid off - after all, she didn't do much else but sit in her room and read, so she had figured getting a head start on studying would be very proactive of herself. She even gave herself a little pat on the back for coming up with such a novel idea. "I'm sure you'll do fine," Laurie encouraged with a smile, leaning back into her seat. "Just think of Biology as the bad guy and how badly you're going to kick its ass and you're golden," she said with a bit of a chuckle. Good ol' Laurie, always dependable and encouraging. She tried to be as optimistic as possible, whenever possible. Granted, she could also be a bit of a Debbie Downer if things started going wrong and she didn't have the solution. The solution to Nori's problem was easy though. Study. The positively-charged teenager would probably find this difficult to accomplish though, with so many volts running through her body. She was turbo-charged almost constantly. "If you need to borrow my Bio notes or anything, go for it." When Jay made his presence known at their table, Laurie turned and smiled up at him. He was definitely welcome to join them. She had recently made a new friend in Jay Guthrie, through some general small talk and, you know... him saving her from being squashed and stuff. "Heya Jay," she said with a smile. "Yeah there's always room for one more," she offered with a smile before taking a sip of her drink. As Laurie examined Jay's chipper mood, she could tell something was up with him. He hadn't struck her as the overly cheerful type before. "I'm doing pretty well, thanks. A bit tired, but food will refuel me," she said with a chuckle. "How about you?" As she continued to eat slowly, Laurie sat back in her chair and simply enjoyed the company of her two friends. She was alone a lot, shut away in her room doing work or fussing over Tommy regardless of how well he was doing in his recovery. As much as she loved Tommy's company, it was nice to hang out around other people every once in a while. It had been a fairly good day so far. Change of scenery, great people, fresh air, some gossip and light-hearted chatter. She had needed a day like today - calm, relaxing and fun. She smiled to herself as she sat back in her chair, content to watch her two friends converse with each other as she listened in. |

"Things be going good...great even." Jay beamed a smile. He always just had one of those 'content smiles' whenever he was happy or in a good mood, but here he was beaming and showing his teeth off with his smile. His seat was next to Noriko, not that there was anything wrong with Laurie, but the particular seat was closest. "Sucks about the Bio, Noriko, I'm glad I don't have to take it anymore...yet. Just started my online college courses today, did all the online orientation stuff and got a decent start on this weeks homework. One of my classes wants me to write a poem or a song, so I just had to dig through any one of like a bajillion notebooks filled with both." He chuckled though it died a bit as he remembered what he heard around the school, as well as what the teaching staff had told him (which wasn't much) about the situation. "It sucks with what happened, on both sides...though Julian has probably had it coming for years...I still need to be at least a little impartial until I hear both sides. One of my new duties as the newly appointed Resident Adviser of the boys dorm is to try and keep them out of trouble but also give'em all a ear to listen to." Jay said smiling a bit up again. Though from what he heard about the whole thing, he was on Josh's side. Tommy may have cheated on Kimmy, but despite that...Jay knew he was still a decent guy in the end. But Josh was a guy who, pun intended, had a heart of gold at one point, he really didn't think Foley had it in him, or at least the lack of sense to let it out. He opened the top of the can of Dr. Pepper before taking a drink and giving a refreshing sigh from the taste. "But other than that unfortunate situation...things are pretty good." Jay said back to the girls. "Wonder if if it has anything to do with finally being twenty." Jay smirked, dropping the hint of it being his birthday. "Not that it is like a big deal or anything." He admitted. |

Noriko scooted over a bit to make room for Jay to sit. He seemed pretty spritely today, but it didn’t take long for him to pick up on what they’d been talking about. “Its bull, Jay. We should all thank Foley for what he did. I mean he’s down in the sublevels, isn’t he? Julian did just as bad and he’s sitting cushy in his bedroom.” Surge had a special dislike for Julian, considering their first meeting. He was a spoiled, rich little brat. That was her general view of him. It may have been an assumption, but the kid did nothing to prove her otherwise. Maybe she was wrong in not trying to squash the problem between them, but as things stood now, she had even less of a reason from here on out. Maybe Tommy deserved some cold shoulder or a stern talking too, but what Julian had done to him was inexcusable. And what was worse, all he was doing was getting a love tap from the staff. Null cuffed, basically grounded. What a sham. She realized gossiping and talking behind wasn’t good, wasn’t cool, but she couldn’t really help it. She had a voice, and sometimes, more often than not, she made it heard whether her opinions were wanted or desired. “I realize why they didn’t toss Julian out of the school, they want to help him, but I get the feeling that he’s beyond helping. He’s too damned bitter, too much of a spoiled brat.” She took a sip of water. “I for one hope Foley knocked some damned sense into him, but I doubt it, now he only has more ammo to whine about.” She stuffed her mouth full of fries in an attempt to shut herself up, and when she was done, she turned to Laurie. “I mean, you know, Tommy’s like your bestie, and he might have screwed up but he’s not a bad person. Really though, I feel bad for Julian, it’s like he doesn’t want friends, but that’s no reason for him to think he can go around doing whatever.” Jay mentioned something about being…oh yeah! She remembered reading about it on the bulletin board in the student lounge. Her rapid fire trashtalk of Julian forgotten for the moment, she clapped him on the back with a gauntleted hand, careful not to whap him too hard. “Happy birthday, Jay! You get assaulted with birthday punches yet?” She let off an evil grin and chuckled a bit as she took a bite of her burger. |

Laurie sat quietly as she listened to both Jay and Nori discuss the incident with Josh and Julian over Tommy. She nodded along with everything that they were saying, but she was inside her own head, thinking - something she had been doing way too much of as of late. She considered both Josh and Tommy friends. She had known Tommy much longer than she had really known Josh - she knew him only vaguely, a few conversations here and there but nothing like the kind of friendship she had developed with Tommy. Not to say forming a tight bond with Josh would be a bad thing... a little voice in her head snickered, and Laurie blushed accidentally in response, trying to hide the reaction from the other two. Shut up, I hardly know him. And besides, back to the topic at hand... she redirected herself, having clearly gone on a tangent. The point was, she would take Josh and Tommy's side over Julian's any day. She didn't know Julian personally, and had never had any desire to even become his acquaintance. He was meaningless and worthless to her, especially after what had taken place. Granted, Julian didn't start the fight with Josh, Josh had. But, Julian had begun the fight that had led to Josh's outrage, and therefore, he deserved every single punch that Josh had dished out. Personally, she wished she could have been there to witness it. Her inner conscience would have obviously wanted her to stop the madness and the violence between fellow students, but her irrational and angry side would have shut that conscience up, tied it to a chair, and stood behind the doorway to watch as Josh kicked the living hell out of that - excuse her language - shithead. When Nori started addressing her she was pulled out of her thoughts and back into the conversation at hand. "Tommy's the farthest thing from a bad person. Everyone screws up but that doesn't mean they're inherently bad," said Laurie in response. "Tommy would never intentionally hurt a fly. Unless it's an evil mastermind fly plotting to take over the universe. That being said, Josh kicked ass and Julian got what he deserved." And that was all she was saying on the matter. She could trash-talk Julian as much as she wanted to - and oh, how she wanted to - but, in the end, what would it accomplish? Especially is said trash-talk wasn't even to his face. She desperately wanted to steer the subject away from Tommy. Once it was on her mind, she started to worry and pretty soon she'd want to excuse herself to go see if he needed anything. Hell, she'd even bring him food. She was like a servant to all of her friends in need. Too loyal for her own good. When Jay brought up his birthday, Laurie grinned. She loved birthdays! Birthdays were great distractions from life. You know, you celebrate the day you were brought into the world, and are momentarily distracted from whatever shit may have got you to the age you are now. "Happy birthday Jay!" said Laurie. She almost wished she had balloons or something she could give him in order to commemorate the occasion. No wonder he had been so chipper when he sat down to join them. "How's it feel to be a another year older? Got any gray feathers?" Laurie smirked at Nori's evil grin regarding the birthday punches and scooted closer to the other side of Jay, ready to assault with said punches on command. "But seriously though, how's it feel? Does being twenty feel any different than being a teenager?" This was a serious question - she only had one more year to go herself. |

"I'm not really the type to encourage violence. There are better ways to solve things than what Josh did. Not condoning anything Julian has done either, they're both in the wrong with how things were handled in my opinion. I like Josh, he's a good guy, and I understand why he did what he did, and in someways Julian maybe deserved it. And trust me, Julian is not sitting comfy in his room." Jay said to the both of them, he was the advisor of the boys dorm after all he knew more or less what was going on in there. Or at least he was trying to get things that way. Some of the male students at times could be less than reasonable. It was unfortunate, but most of the time Jay was always hearing things second or third handedly, he couldn't really give any real judgement or anything like that on anyone for their actions, he was never there to see it. Outside of cheating on Kimmy, Tommy never seemed like a bad guy. Josh always seemed like a good guy. And Julian was...complicated, at least from the impressions Jay got. They never really talked much at all. "The school is here for learning, not just to learn how to use our powers properly, but how to interact and all that with each other and humans. The past few incidents with Josh, Julian and Tommy is just showing that even some of the most experienced students still have a lot to learn in a variety of departments. Julian belongs here just as much as any of us despite his actions, he's just a slow learner apparently." Jay smirked. "I really hate to play the impartial pacifist role especially since I've gotten into a bunch of fights back in Kentucky to get my little bro out of mess. Heck my family has a multi-generational feud with another large family in our county. All the Guthrie's know a lot about fighting instead of trying to make peace." He states giving some personal experience and background. "But there are a lot bigger threats we should be dealing with that don't involve in-fighting with other students and future team mates. Just think its best to try and just figure out how to get the issues on a path to being fixed so we don't have it happening again in the future. You know, without someone spending a night in the infirmary or someone getting slapped with null-cuffs and thrown into the brig." Maybe he was just seeing the world through rose colored glasses, maybe it was maturity finally popping through, but Jay truly believed that the squabbles between students needed to stop. Violence wasn't the answer, especially among friends. Well if one was using the term 'friends' loosely. "And yes, Jeb took care of the birthday punches quite early this morning. Need to remember to lock up my new dorm room..." he sighed but laughed anyways. "Thanks gals." The angel smiled at both of them before taking a drink of his soda. "Well...there's been a lot happening recently, so yeah it feels different. Started college, got a new room, been appointed as the boy dorm RA, more or less got a few steady gigs at clubs and bars all around the city to make money. Also recently started getting private lessons with Mr. Worthington given that we have similar mutations, he's been teaching me quite a few new moves for combat if I need to use them." He summarized the rather suddenly busy life of Jay Guthrie quite quickly. "And despite all that, I admit, I still feel a little lost with what direction I want to go in life. Kind of feels like I've been waiting in line at a fast food restaurant for years, and I finally got up to place my order and I don't even remember why I came here..." |

She listened to Jay drone on about being impartial and thinking everyone deserved a chance at redemption, but she had to admit, she really didn’t see it. Maybe Julian could be a good person, but it just seemed to her like it was a battle between nature and nurture that Keller had all but lost. Surge cursed herself for being so narrow-minded about it, but he had really hurt her when she first came looking for help here. He’d made no attempts to hide his dislike for her in their subsequent interactions, and the same went for her. In her mind, he had it coming, and he was just lucky that was all he’d gotten. Jay continued going on about his past tribulations and how violence was never the answer, Surge huffed and rolled her eyes. Violence was never the best answer, but somebody would be hypocritical and naďve if they said that nothing ever had to come to blows. Look at Apocalypse. The only way to end his attacks was to strike back at him, heavy and hard. Surge wasn’t a violent person. She didn’t like that sometimes, force was needed to put something down, but she wasn’t so idealistic as to say there was always another way. Maybe somebody could get through to Julian, but it wasn’t them, at least no any time soon. Noriko debated bringing her opinions up to Jay, but she bit her lip. Laurie was obviously eager to jump into another topic, and she understood why. It was a sensitive subject for her, the reason behind Josh’s blowup on Julian, and she didn’t like pressing the issue when it was obviously making her friend skittish and antsy. So she listened to Jay talk about his birthday and what he’d been up to lately, finishing her food and pushing her tray back a little bit. Casting a side-long look at Laurie, she switched up her expression, showing her a smile that seemed to say ‘Sorry I brought it up’, and she scooted away from the table. “Well, Jay. Happy Birthday. I gotta go burn off some zap before next class, or I’m never gonna be able to sit through it.” Putting one foot up on the chair, she fumbled for a few seconds with tying her shoelaces, something that was never easy when your fingers were clad in armored steel. Dang, I should invest in Velcro, but Velcro shoes never look cool. She smiled at her own thoughts, picking up her tray with one hand and smiling to the two of them. “Happy Birthday, Jay. See ya later, Laurz.” She used her free hand to fire off a little wave to the two of them and moved through the dining area, dumbing her tray in the garbage and setting it on top to be collected, then, slipping bulky gauntlets and lean arms through the straps of her bookbag, she was gone. |
