Genetic Duplication Through Manipulation Of Self
Time of day: 4:30pm, Mall in North Salem
Place in the time-line: October 15

This was so much better than the city. Shopping in New York City was simply too hectic, too push-and-shove, too much ‘oh-my-gawd-does-this-make-me-look-fat’. Like these idiots can’t figure out for themselves whether they looked fat. At least once during her last attempt at shopping, Cat had morphed into one of the friends, and flat out said ‘yes, and ugly – or is that just you?’ A rather interesting fight ensued after Cat changed back and the real friend returned. In fact, it had kept Vanessa mildly entertained all the way up until the group of girls was escorted out by security.

A smaller, more intimate shopping mall was just what Vanessa needed for her shopping requirements. It had all the good stores that didn’t cost a fortune, and lacked the screaming masses of shoppers. Especially on a Sunday afternoon; the quiet stores had only a few end-of-weekend shoppers, all relatively boring. Already, Vanessa was laden with a few bags, each containing a different essential item of clothing or care. The young woman didn’t stick out too much here, even with her dark hair curled, vivid amber eyes lined in eyeliner. The dark jeans and short sleeved lavender sweater blouse were curve hugging without being overly snug, the black boots adding half an inch to her height.

She had almost covered half the mall, when the sight of glowing, blinking lights caught her attention. The arcade was like a beacon of entertainment in the quiet mall, and her eyes lit up at the sight. For such a small mall, it was an impressive array of games, and the grinning Vanessa quickly changed a ten for a lot of quarters.

The first game she picked was a driving game – one that had horrible responses to her attempt to drive, and ending with her purposely driving the car into everything she could, just to see the explosions. Chortling to herself, she switched this time to a rather intriguing first person shooter game. It was called CarnEvil – pictures of zombie clowns and dead carnival workers littered the screen to a backdrop of an abandoned carnival. The fake shotguns were charged by pulling back the barrel loader, and her quarters were well spent.

Laughing to herself at each zombie, and vocally egging the killer carnival folk forward, she lost all sense of time, shooting away happily at the army of evil carnies. It quickly became apparent that she was pretty good, and her stack of quarters stayed pretty tall as she shot and laughed and reloaded.

Today was just another ordinary day for the brunette. She got up at seven or so and got ready for classes, got dressed, showered, made sure that she didn't take too long in the bathroom so that Sally and Kimmy didn't want to kill her. She did that some times. Even though, it wasn't very often. Today's classes just seemed very... Slow and boring, admittedly. She had a bit of an exciting weekend ahead of her. Later in the day, she was going to help Mittens pick out Anne Lee's birthday present in town today. It just sounded a bit.. Exciting to her.

Survival? Flew by. Calculus and all that other math stuff? Aly wasn't even paying attention. Science? Pfft. The only subject that Alyson really listened, read, and payed attention to was history. She didn't know why, but that was her favorite subject. So much so that she would pay attention to it, even when she was thinking of what she was going to get Anne Lee for her birthday; even if it was still two months away. Shopping ahead was always a good thing. Unless it was for a child, then the child would probably change it's mind in about a week or so.

At lunch time, Alyson ate something very simple. Something that she was known to eat when she was in a hurry, and really just wanted time to fly bly and school to be over. This wasn't the first time that Aly had done this, oh definitely not. There were of course the special occasions that she returned home, like she would be doing tomorrow. Even if it was only for a day - her birthday, for that matter - she was still psyched. She was going to see her father for the first time since.. What, Christmas? Alyson wasn't sure, but she knew it had been a while!

After about another two hours, classes were finally over and Alyson returned to her dorm room, got changed, and did a bit of her homework until it was around three thirty, and it was just about time to leave for the mall. Quickly, Aly went and got the feline mutant that was known to more than three quarters of the school as simply Mittens, and soon enough, they were in Salem Center - and the mall. "So... What kind of stuff does Anne Lee like again? Or is it really not known?" Aly said, laughing a bit. She didn't know Anne Lee very well, but she wanted to help the best she could.

"Um, computers?" Robert answered without sureness. "What can I buy her that she can't summon already!?"

OK, now that was loud. Random shoppers stopped in their fast passed walk to stare at the catboy in disguise. What was up with the teenager, they asked each other. What did he mean by summon? Was he a mutant? Naw, he couldn't be because he looked too sweet.

Robert's enhanced hearing caught the last statement made by a grandmother to what looked like her daughter and grandkids. Sweet? Did she mean innocent? Robert hissed under his breath. Sweet?

"Think we shouldn't stay here," he told Alyson. Not waiting for an answer he began to walk in a random direction. His outburst totally was due to frustration. What couldn't his sister get? A laptop? Anne Lee already had one. New notebooks? She summoned the ones in lost and found. A pony? Like she would take care of a pony. Though, if they were allowed to keep pets Robert would get his sister a puppy. He liked dogs way more than cats (just don't tell anyone that.)

Realizing he'd ignore one of Alyson's question, Robert stopped and looked up at her. "What she likes she wears on her crazy smiling face. Cupcakes, computers, collecting information. Anything! It's impossible to pinpoint what she doesn't already have or what she chooses not get. Guess she could always need a new toothbrush since she tends to summon used toothbrushes when she needs a new one."

Trying to keep from pacing as his frustration increased, he leaned against the railing that separated the second floor from the first floor view. (So people wouldn't accidentally fall one story while being distracted by sales.) "What would you get her? You're, well, a girl." Great, Robert, some people did not like that being pointed out. The automatic assumption that all girls knew what other girls liked.

As he waited for her to answer Robert decided to people watch. Due to his physical mutation he wore an image inducer in public. Thankfully, his hearing wasn't blocked by it since the inducer was more holograms than power nullification. The noise from a distant arcade made his ears twitch. A full tooth grin appeared on his face. Alyson wouldn't know why. She could not hear what he could hear.

"So, how about we hit the arcade? We got a couple of hours and it's not like Anne Lee's birthday is tomorrow." In a little over a month his sister would turn nineteen. He had plenty of time to go shopping. So, knowing the fastest way to get to video game land was by staying together, Robert grabbed Alyson's hand.

Once there he pulled out a roll of quarters from his pocket (Anne Lee had a knack of summoning quarters. Whenever he asked for money, she would give him rolls of quarters.) "Which game would you like to play first?" he asked Alyson. However, Robert's eyes already found the best gamer in the joint. He could not take his eyes off of... the zombie game.

"I'm going to play that," Robert said as he walked over to the game. How long was she going to play? No one noticed as the catboy disguised by an image inducer joined the crowd gawking at the girl shooting at zombies. That was until he tripped over his shoelaces... and fell.

Vanessa, despite her distracted concentration on the game at hand, still managed to notice each time someone paused in their shopping to stare at her antics. Considering the people that were in the mall, quite a few of them took a moment to stare at her vigor. It didn’t bother her too much, often glancing over her shoulder to grin at people who gaped for too long. The bags of bought items were tucked closer to the wall and watched carefully from the corner of her eye, untrusting even in such a small, quiet mall. There was one moment, when a little kid was watching with such wide eyes, that she smiled, kneeling down to give the child the toy gun for a few moments, letting him shoot the zombies a few times. The kid giggled and started laughing, and the mother gave Vanessa a smile.

Sure, it costed a life, but she had plenty of quarters left. Picking up where she left off, she heard a few mutters from behind her, ignoring it until the game paused for a moment. Glancing over her shoulder, she saw one guy aiming for her game – she’d put his age at late teens, maybe seventeen or so. He looked a bit young, but Vanessa was pretty good about ages. Noticing the rather reluctant girl being dragged along behind him, Cat chuckled a bit. At least until the boy took a sudden nosedive towards the floor.

Startled as the crowd suddenly turned, Vanessa put the toy gun down, ignoring the fact that she had died, and was on a fifteen second countdown to restart. Glaring at a few people in the crowd, she stepped over to the kid, offering her hand to him with a grin.

“Don’t tell me you did that just to end my game, so you could play?” Copycat teased with a bright grin, brushing dark curls out of her amber eyes. Behind her, the countdown slowly ended, ending her long lasted game at last. The pile of quarters was still there, and no one touched them as they dispersed. The game itself, while fun, wasn’t worth just letting the kid be embarrassed. Well, maybe – but she wasn’t mean enough to just let other people laugh. Once her game ended, most of the people walked away, showing little concern for the fallen boy.

“Well, since the crowd’s gone, care for a gun?” Straightening with a smile, she pointed with her thumb over her shoulder at the game, before glancing at the girl who was obviously with the fallen kid. “I can switch to something else, if the two of you want to play together.” After all, there were plenty of other games in the arcade. Driving, shooting, even a Dance Dance Revolution game, which Vanessa was staying far away from. Making an idiot out of herself with a shooting game was fine – but there was no way she was throwing her limbs in all directions for that game.

Jeanette hated shopping malls. She hated having to walk through them even more.

While others might enjoy such hubs of style and interaction, Jeanette felt more like an attraction in a zoo. Rarely harassed, but never ignored, she walked through the North Salem shopping mall in the tunnel of a parting crowd. Times like these conjured gratitude in Jeanette for not being on any wanted list.

Clenching her jaw and ignoring the distrustful onlookers, Jeanette swiftly rode atop her long legs and covered ground quickly. Though she was positive she would not be calling upon their services, the mutant took some solace in the variety of metals she could detect in her immediate proximity. Anything from ear-rings to pockets filled with nickel coins, it was all there should anyone become hostile.

In actuality however, Jeanette just couldn't wait to leave. She was only here at the behest of one of her contacts, whom had informed her that some merchandise she had ordered had finally arrived. To pick it up she had to drive out here and meet the middle-man at his drug store.

After ascertaining its location from a public map Jeannette was soon standing in front of Mom and Pa's Remedies. Behind her she could hear the sights and sounds of an arcade, and was secretly thankful that it seemed to be drawing the publics attention away from her. She wasn't sure what could cause this, but was pleased with its occurrence nonetheless.

Entering the store, Jeanette went straight to the counter where she was presented with a teenager whose face was hidden behind a book.

'Excuse me,' the mutant started, waiting until the clerk looked up from her literature. When she did her face tightened nervously and fear calcified in her eyes.

'Um, yes?'

'I was told to pick up something here from the hands of one Mr Blue.'

The clerk's brow furrowed slightly. 'You mean, Daren?'

Jeanette pretended not to hear that. She didn't want to know the mans real name.

'Is he here?'

The clerk chewed her bottom lip while eying the luminescent mutant before her. The seconds of silence seemed to drag on into minutes.

'No.' she finally answered. 'Please, if you could just - '

Jeanette ceased paying attention and instead pulled an elegant device from inside her jacket, a mobile phone. Dialing up a number, she activated its speaker-mode and confidently set it on the desk that separated her from the stubborn clerk.

'Y'ello!' a male voice picked up the phone. His accent was notably foreign, most likely British.

'Where are you?' Jeanette asked.

'I'm inside luv...where else would I be?'

Jeanette raised a slender, purple eyebrow in expectation towards the clerk. The human teenager looked down shamefully at her desk, her cheeks flushed with crimson.

'Oh good, so I can come right on in?'

'Sure thing, by the way where are you at the mo -'

Jeanette hung up, and pulled herself away from the desk and its humbled inhabitant. Tucking her phone away as she moved through the isles, Jeanette opened the door that was marked for 'Staff Only' and vanished into the back.

Alyson blinked a bit and grinned, eying the disguised cat-boy. "Something that's alive, I guess." She commented. This was true, Anne Lee couldn't summon objects that were alive, or living things. This included a lot of things. "... What does Anne Lee think of Venus Fly traps?" Alyson said, getting a bit of a devious look on her face as she eyed her friend. It would be funny, to see Anne Lee with a Venus Fly trap. She could use it to do her bidding, have it bite someone's finger and never let it go.. Of course, the brunette was getting ahead of herself.

Though, something that Alyson hadn't noticed were the people that continued to stare at her. Aly blinked her eyes and looked down at her feet once she did notice, and she could overhear what they were saying. All were pondering to themselves if the two were mutants, just because Mittens had blurted out that Anne Lee could summon things. Though, Alyson sighed out of relief when the ladies, girls, and occasional male of the groups decided to shrug it off because 'he looked too sweet'... Which, admittedly, Alyson agreed with. If it weren't for the cat ears and tail back at the Institute, she wouldn't know herself.

Then, Robert had said something about not thinking they should stay here. Alyson frowned a bit as he began walking away. "Okay, you go ahead. I'll just wait here until you realize I drove us here, 'kay?" Alyson smiled politely, only to notice him stop and turn to look at her to answer one of her prior questions. The one about what Anne Lee liked. He basically said a lot of things that she could summon on her own, or things that were virtually impossible to get on the budget that the two teenagers had. Then, he asked her opinion on what she would get. "Well... I..."

Alyson began, walking up to Robert and looking the shorter boy in the eyes. "I mentioned one thing earlier, but I think she'd get a tad too sadistic with that. Otherwise, maybe a goldfish or something? I don't know, can you even keep any type of pet at that school?" Alyson inquired. She'd been there for more than a year now, and she didn't know if you could even keep pets that were kept in a cage or a bowl or something. She figured that they wouldn't mind plants; Miss Munroe had an entire garden in the attic. She shrugged her shoulders. She hadn't been around Lee much.

"I really don't know. What did you get your sister last year?" She blinked, maybe it was something that would wear out over time. But; with their luck, it wasn't. "Or maybe we could get her a Ferby." Alyson began to trail off on her own, in her mind, and then Mittens mentioned an arcade. She blinked her eyes, not sure if now was the right time. Sure, any other time she would be thrilled to go hang out in an arcade, but right now they were on a mission; their mission - to find Anne Lee a birthday present. Even if they didn't know what to get.

Though, Robert had a point. They were going to be here for a few hours, and Anne Lee's birthday was in December, the first day of, actually. They could make it. "Eh... Sure, why not?" Alyson said, smiling a bit. She did enjoy her games when she actually had the time for them. Suddenly, Robert grabbed her hand and she blinked a bit, her cheeks flushing temporarily. It wasn't that long until they actually got there, and Robert asked her opinion of what she wanted to play. She blinked a bit. She wasn't very sure.. Though Robert already had his eyes on the zombie game. "That looks fun."

Then, Robert was dragging her over to it. There was already a girl playing it, who had a stack of quarters that looked like they had been untouched. Alyson's eyes were temporarily fixated on the game, she was a real pro.. That is, until Mittens tripped over apparently untied shoe laces and fell. "Mit-- Robert!" Alyson said, blinking into reality as she looked down at her friend, and then the girl that was playing the game offered to help him up. The crowd had dispersed, and she offered him one of the guns. Alyson blinked a bit. That would be a very interesting match up. "Go for it."
