It had already been a few days since Eli had suffered from an embarrassing situation in which his powers refused to cooperate. In those three days, the new student had dedicated his time to studying while minimizing the amount of time he spent around other people. If he gave it enough time something else was bound to happen to focus the attention of the student body away from his recent mishap. Due to the fact that he had been spending so much time in his room, it was very easy to locate the teen. When the word arrived that he would be moving, it hardly took any time at all to gather his things. Everything he owned had been provided to him by the school. Moving was simply a matter of gathering his school supplies, clothes, and hygiene products. All in all, it had taken him about ten minutes to move into his new room.

As he had done when the news arrived that he would be changing rooms, Eli continued kept his attention solely on his homework. Doing so served two purposes. First, making sure he was occupied prevented him from thinking of the past few days. Secondly, it was bad enough that he had been caught naked in the hallways. It would be almost as embarrassing to have to repeat sophomore year simply because he had spent so much time making his way to the Institute.

Eventually, Eli ran into a problem. Having spent so much time with his attention focused on books and taking notes, Eli reached the point where he simply couldn't pay attention anymore. With a sigh, he stood and popped his back before putting his things away. He looked at his side of the room; it was bare. Some people would have probably called it utilitarian. But to Eli, it was awesome considering he had spent the past year hitch hiking across America. Turning his eyes to the other side of the room, Eli realized for the first time that he hadn't actually seen his elusive room mate. He walked to the door, and checked the name on the outside.

Jeb Guthrie.

Although he had been at the school for a little over a month, Eli hadn't actually met enough people to know who anybody was. Everybody on the grounds were still strangers to him, and despite recent events Eli found himself wishing he had at least met some people by now. Closing the door, he wandered back into the room and fell backwards onto his bed. Staring at the ceiling, he sighed, "So effing BORED!"

Having a new roommate was as great as things could get. The best part being, NO FEATHERS. Who cared if his brother got a nicer, one person, room. Jeb had been switched in with someone who didn’t shed, molt, or ooze, so who ever he was, was jim-dandy in Jeb’s eyes.

Eli Grant was whom the slip said. Better known to Jeb, as naked lad. Not that he was going to call him that to his face, but it did seem fitting with the schools recent events. As with all teenagers, news never stayed secret. So at the likelihood Eli had already gotten crap for his hallway exposition, Jeb would keep his knowledge of the incident to himself.

He hadn’t even met the guy yet; Jeb he left early and came in late, and never really spent much time in the room either. Come to think of it, he wasn’t even sure he knew what his roomie looked like. Though, he was pretty sure he had seen him walking through the hallways, and that Eli was that guy with the headphones and the music powers. Which he was also ok with, so long as he didn’t play Metallica at 2 am when he was trying to sleep. It didn’t really matter what he thought he knew, because in a matter of minutes, everything would be either confirmed or disproven.

Jeb padded down the hallway, wistfully thinking about football standings as he moved. He had just had a long debate over what team would be dominating the NFL, an argument that neither student would win. So rather than dwell on the debate he decided to cut out early and head upstairs to his room. Rounding the corner just in time to see his room’s door shut.

Oh goody, Eli is around.

Getting in was no issue, he always kept his key in his left back pocket, a silly quirk that was just another of Jeb’s many. As he unlocked the door he could hear his roommates exasperated sigh. With a snicker he opened the door and walked, curious as to why exactly his new roomie was so bored in fact.
“Language, Grant, you want someone to think we are bad kids in here?”
He said with a chuckle, throwing his empty backpack into the corner as he crossed the room towards his desk. Turning his chair around and straddling it backwards so he faced Eli.

“Naw, ah’m just joshin’. Not like the X man though, ah can’t heal any one or nothin’.” He smiled at his own lame joke before continuing. “Ah, don’t know that anyone can even think we are bad kids. The whole bible names and all. Heh, pretty ironic. We should put a sign on the door that says ‘welcome to Babylon’ or somthin’. Then people might think we are bible freaks.“
Jeb went on not waiting to see if the other boy wanted to speak. When he started, Jeb could be the most overly friendly and talkative person in the world.

“Then again, Denzel Washington wasn’t very goody goody, in Book of Eli. He effed a lot of people up. Awesome movie. You ever seen it? Maybe they will make a sequel, Book o’ Jeb. Ah’d caste Dicaprio, cuz he was the shit in Inception. Well, it would probably be pretty bad come to think of it.”

He stopped with a cheeky smile, realizing that he had been rambling to the other boy. He sat quietly for a few moments looking around the other boys side of the room, taking note of how empty it was.

“Pretty barren dontcha think? “

From the moment Jeb Guthrie entered the room and began talking to him, Eli hadn't been able to answer a single one of the questions he had been asked. The other occupant of the room, it seemed, had the mutant ability of never ending speech. While Eli was far from being anti-social, there was a certain amount of quiet time that he required. At the particular moment, however, he was thoroughly fed up with quiet. He'd had plenty of it the past few days, and therefore Jeb's ramblings were quite amusing. In fact, Eli was rather impressed that the other teen was immediately so friendly.

Sitting up to face one of the many Guthrie's, Eli simply looked at the guy as he talked. When the opportunity presented itself, he took a deep breath. He had paid attention to the somewhat unfocused rambling, and attempted to respond to each subject. It would certainly prove to be an impressive feat if he were able to manage it while preventing Jeb from having a chance to speak in return.

"First, bad kids. While it's not good to be known as 'bad', per se, I'd say it's always good to have something that sets you apart from the typical good guy, boy scout. I have no idea what you mean by joshin' me like an X-Man and healing and whatnot, so . . . yeah. As for our names, well, I'm pretty sure we were the good guys in the Bible, so the whole 'Babylon' sign wouldn't work so well. You know, cause it's like the city of evil- the scarlet whore, and stuff. Also, nothing wrong with being a Bible 'freak'. At least, not as far as I can see. Probably ain't much that could change my mind about that, either. Yeah, The Book of Eli kicked ass. But, I wouldn't call Denzel a bad guy. I mean, God gave him a mission. If he's doing the Lord's work, and evil men get in the way of that, I can't say that it's wrong for him to do whatever is needed to accomplish his mission. By the way, Inception was awesome. I had no idea what was going on for, like, the first half hour. Totally. Freakin'. Awesome." With that said, Eli gestured to the room. It was true. It was sorely lacking that homey feel. But, that could be easily explained.

"Yeah. It ain't much to look at, but I can't complain. Everything I own comes straight from the school. I guess personal laptops and iPods and stuff aren't high on the list of things to provide students," he stated with a chuckle. "So, where are you from? Not many folks talk proper up here like we do south of the Mason-Dixon."

Well he wasn’t the music guy, but he still seemed cool by Jeb’s standards. It was always a good sign when the people you speak to, humor the gesture and respond in a pleasant manner. Especially when that person is the least mature of the Guthries. Which made Jeb all the happier to see his overly friendly demeanor had not been a turnoff as with so many people.

He listened quietly as the other boy spoke, grinning and leaning his chin on his arms, which were resting on the back of the chair. Thoroughly impressed that Eli was able to catch the entirety of his mindless drabbles. Paying particular attention to his response on the two movies, making mental note of what to suggest in the future. After all, every one loved a good action movie.

"I guess personal laptops and iPods and stuff aren't high on the list of things to provide students,"

“Ptth those pesky teachers. They can pay for a stealth jet, but our daily dose of Shakira goes completely ignored.” He replied shaking his head in dramatic shame. “The poor, poor students. ”

Demeanor flipping almost instantly, when Eli asked about his home state. Sticking his nose in the air and sitting up strait his chair, Jeb replied proudly “Cumberland, Kentucky.” Putting unnecessary emphasis on the ‘Ken’ syllable. “Don’t be too harsh. Them yanks can’t help it if their professors can’t teach ‘em how to talk right.” He jested, even though he did believe Northerners sounded silly at times.

“You must be from somewhere close. Ah’ma take a shot in the dark and say Missouri. But, Ah don’t really know, Ah’m not good with that kind of stuff.” He forced himself to stop, making sure to keep from rambling again.

“But, anyways, what this room needs is a splash a’ color. I think I have a poster of Sue Storm somewhere around here. You can have it if you want.”

What he didn’t mention was that the reason he never put said poster up, was the fact that it was a scantily clad drawing of the Invisible Woman, which he didn’t want Jay to see when they were still rooming together.

Once Eli had been given a chance to establish the conversation as a back-and-forth type of event, he found that Jeb's overwhelmingly friendly demeanor was actually pretty awesome. Given enough time- and Eli was sure there would be plenty of time here at the school- he was fairly certain that he'd become pretty good friends with Jeb.

Upon the mention of a stealth jet, Eli's jaw dropped. "There's a stealth jet? Here? Dude! First, I've gotta see that thing. Second . . . WHY is there a jet here?" Although Eli was vaguely familiar with the mutant team known as the X-Men, he knew little aside from the fact that they were the good guys- the folks that were fighting the bad guys that kept on giving peaceful mutants a bad name.

When Jeb's whole attitude seemed to change at the mention of where he was from, Eli couldn't help but smile. It was good to see a little southern pride. When the other teen took a shot in the dark, guessing where Eli was from, he was almost surprised. With a shrug of his shoulders, he said, "You were sorta close. Mississippi. Mathiston. It's about a half hour west of Starkville."

The conversation continued on. Upon the mention of a poster, Eli sat up. The room was painfully bare. Putting something on the walls would definitely give it a different feel other than the 'standard issue' that it currently had. "Dude, Sue Storm is HOT. That poster goes up as soon as you can find it."

When he first heard Eli was going to be his new roommate, Jeb was almost afraid he was going to be a boring, stick in the mud, individual. But as it turned out Eli just had a bad over his head. Which, being Jeb, was digging it.

“Dude, you know where you are right? This is Xavier’s man of course we have a stealth jet! I don’t know were they keep it exactly but they have it.” He beamed, now standing and straddling the chair. Proud that he knew something the other boy didn’t.

”How else would the X-Men get around? Walk? Well unless you are Mr. Worthington of course, but that is a different story.” Specifically leaving out the part about his siblings being apart of said group, despite wanting to brag. He would save that for another day, boasting was no way to make a first impression.

As he spoke he began to pace around the small room, planning out in his head exactly how Eli should decorate his side. At Eli’s mention of Mississippi, Jeb broke out in a loud laugh.

“Mississippi? Ah was way off. That is nowhere near Missouri. All the way on the other side of the big river. Where all those alligators are and such. Cool stuff man, cool stuff.”

He stopped his pacing, looking at Eli as he sat. Too jittery to stand still in one place for long. Even after spending an entire day of running around and hanging out, Jeb still had excessive amounts of energy.

“Heck yeah she is! Ah swear if Sue Storm was an X-Man, Ah’d never get any work done around here.”

On the move yet again, Jeb started digging through a mess of papers on his desk in search of the poster. Yet it seemed like he was just making a mess at the piles of papers were thrown haphazardly to every direction while several spilled over the edge. Jeb didn’t care though, it was homework that he wasn’t planning on doing anyway.

"So wait, rewinding, you been at Xavier’s how long an’ you didn’t know about the jet? You know about the danger room right? An’ the X-men“, Calling out from over his shoulder. Pretty curious as to just how in the dark Eli really was.

The fact that he didn't know there was a jet at the school seemed to surprise Jeb. His roommate talked like he was supposed to magically know all the things about the X-Men. Eli felt as if he had to explain his situation.

"Well, I've been here about a month. I just recently found out about the Danger Room, but I haven't been there yet. And, about the X-Men . . . well, I know they were the ones who were fighting Apocalypse from the beginning, but I don't know anything about them- other than the fact that they're obviously the good guys." Eli paused here. As he explained why he didn't know anything about Xavier's, he began to remember that he had never heard of the school before. A bit of a defensive edge worked it's way into his voice. "And besides that, the town I grew up in had never had any mutants in it. I was the first. I didn't even know there was a school for mutants up here until I actually made it to Mutant Town. So, how was I supposed to know all this stuff? I don't even know WHO the X-Men are."

By this time, Eli had moved from his bed and began pacing slightly. Talking to Jeb was nothing at all like talking to his own brother, but he could definitely feel the same sort of frustration beginning to build. Running a hand through his hair, Eli took a deep breath. He'd almost had to go see the headmaster for being naked in the halls; he didn't have any desire to see what would happen if he got into a fight. Eli decided it was was time to quickly change the subject.

"Hey, man, do you like football? Is there a place where we could get a ball?"

Jeb could hear the annoyance rising in his roommate’s tone, and stopped his pacing to look Eli in the face as he spoke. His defensive tone concerned Jeb, suddenly aware he might have hit a nerve. Coming from a family that consisted of a plethora of mutants, Jeb often forgot that mutant affairs and news was not as readily available to others.

“Oh. Well yeah. The X-Men are the best of good guys. Ah mean, those other super teams are pretty cool an' all, but Ah like the X-Men best. They did some cool stuff durrin’ apocalypse.”

Jeb waited, not long enough to let Eli speak in return but, in time to let him gather his next few thoughts.

"First in your town eh? Ah was like... number five, that ah know of, and they were all mah brothers an' sisters."

He paused yet again contemplating his family's genes. Now that he thought about it, his family were the only ones in Kentucky with mutant births. There had to be others though, no way the six of them were the only mutants in the whole Bluegrass State.

"Yeah, they all came here before me. Except Liz o' course, even though she is older and stuff, late bloomer as they say. You might know some of 'em."
Hearing Eli's dislike for the subject, Jeb did not object when he went to change the subject. Not to mention the subject Eli wanted to change to one of Jeb's favorite of all topics, football.

"Do Ah like football? Heck yeah Ah like football! Titans man, Titans are where it is at. Two words. Vince Young." He beamed, excited that Eli potentially like the sport as much as he. "Ah lost my football, but a lot of people have em'. You play?"
