CF:Clean Up On Aisle Seven

Stealth Kitty believed was one of her strong suits, the ability to move amongst a crowd undetected, unobserved, just another face in the crowd. She may have been giving herself more credit than was rightfully deserved but she needed the justification to boost her courage. She technically wasn't breaking any laws, though ethically she knew she was crossing way too many lines. But if she was doing the wrong thing she told herself it was for the right reasons. Sometimes you had to operate in shades of gray to look after those you cared about. Sometimes curiosity was a good thing, right?

One hour earlier

Xavier Institute: Doug Ramsey's room.

"You do realize that we are breaking more rules than I care to think about." Doug said as he typed away at his laptop while Kitty changed clothes behind his closet door. Her usual attire would probably do well enough, but the last thing Kitty needed to look like tonight was Kitty. Stealth, that was the objective, see but not be seen, channel out her inner spy and find out just exactly what Piotr Rasputin was up to.

"It's really best if we don't think of it like that. Somethings going on, Doug. Something bad, but right now all I have is speculation and my gut instinct. I need to find out whats going on before Piotr gets hurt."

Or hurts someone else. she thought but didn't add. She had kept a few details of the vague threats and mentions that Piotr had told her about on that awful night when she had ran down to his room from her best friend for his own good she had told herself. In a flash of mental images she was there again, feeling the way her pulse raced when she had kissed him, feeling the joy she had felt when he had kissed her back and then the devastating let down as he brushed her off and dropped more bombshells down on top of her than an air raid over Baghdad.

"Still, I'm not really comfortable with this. People's email accounts are private Kitty. It's like snooping through their medicine cabinets, some things should be sacred. And your not exactly giving me a lot to go on here. Your asking me to crack into the e-mail account of a guy that could smash my skull like a rotten banana with one closing of his steel hand."

She sighed out loud as she pulled a dark pair pants on. Getting Doug on board with this had been a lot harder than she thought it would be. The expert hacker had a strong code of ethics that Kitty was finding hard to convince him to breach, especially only under the "just trust me" blanket she was offering him of an explanation. It wasn't that she didn't trust Doug, it was only she was unsure how much to tell him. Piotr's secret was not hers to tell and she had struggled with it enough over countless nights of lost sleep to invite someone else in that she care about to the awful pact. And how much did she actually know? The answer was not a lot. That was what she was hoping to find out through his email, if she could follow Piotr on one of his strange disappearances then maybe the X-man could find out exactly how much dark truth there had been to his ominous words. She was torn on the truth, half hoping that she would find out she was wrong; the other dreading that it would be worse, that her darkest thoughts would be proven true or even worse less than her wildest imaginations.

"Can you do it or not?" She asked him from behind the door.

He spun around in his chair, mouth hanging open.

"I never said I couldn't do it. I've cracked firewalls into the FBI's database, you know I can do this. Your trying to intimidate me into showing how capable I am and still getting your way."

"Is it working?" she asked again as she buttoned the last few buttons on her trench coat and put a dark pair of sunglasses on her face.

"Yeah you know me to well Pryde. And.... that makes that. We're in"

She smiled and phased through the closet door back into the room.

"What do you see?"

Doug scrolled through the messages, never looking over his shoulder at his in disguise friend.

"Umm, the usual so far. Oh look a online receipt from, "Girls of the Southwest!" looks like someone getting their fetish on."

"What?" she said aloud rushing to him. "Where?"

Doug bust out laughing and then catching sight of Kitty started laughing harder. She slapped him on the back once she realized he was lying.

"What's so funny, Ramsey?"

"Nothing." he replied looking at the girl in her long black coat, slacks, fedora and glasses.

"Just tell me where are you going to hide the Eiffel tower after you steal it Carmen Sandiego?" Then he started to laugh again, and this time catching a good look at her reflection and how truly over thought the whole outfit was Kitty joined him. It was the laughter of two friends who knew each other inside and out. When the fit began to ebb she returned to the task at hand.

"Thank you. I mean for doing this, it means a lot."

He looked over his shoulder at her and she could see in his eyes the disposition of power. He trusted her so much, there was probably nothing she couldn't ask of him that he wouldn't do for her and using her friend like this was crossing yet another line she realized she was doing a bit too easily.

"I wish you would tell me what you were up to or at least let me come along."

"I can't Doug, but I'll be fine. Once I know something more definite I'll fill you in I promise."

Lying was something that was becoming a bit to easy for her too.

"Here, I found something." he said pulling up an email, "It's recently dated and encrypted, so whomever sent it sent it so it would be hard to retrieve.

"Can you crack it?" she asked peering over his shoulderWhat and the jumbled letters and numbers.

"Don't have to." he answered her. "I can read through the encryption. It's a meeting set up, tonight actually in North Salem."

"Your a genius!" she exclaimed and kissed him on his cheek, he turned a flushed color of red.

"Yeah,... well." he stammered. "Just doing what I do."

She headed to the door.

"Kitty!" he yelled out before she phased out through the door.

"I know I know be careful."

"Actually I was going to say there is a reason curiosity killed the cat. Sometimes when we go digging we only find out things we'd have been happier not knowing." She looked over shoulder and gave her best friend a small smile and then phased out his door. She had one hour to get in place and see just who Piotr Rasputin was sneaking out to meet.

Present

The X-man pulled up a seat at a table far enough away from the tall Russian she had tracked out here. She opened a large book, pretending to read as a waitress came over to take her order.

She ordered a coffee so as to not seem odd sitting at a table and not eating and from over her book tried to make out the man sitting with Piotr. He looked vaguely familiar but she couldn't place him. As carefully as she could she pulled her cellphone out of her pocket and activating it's built in camera snapped a picture of him. Maybe she would have better luck running a facial recognition thing using the school's Cerebro files. And then things took a turn for the even weirder when another X-man, James Proudstar arrived.

What the.., she thought. What was James doing at Piotr's secret meeting? How was he involved? Kitty was finding more questions than answers and the questions were dreadfully troubling in their own right. Her mind began to fill in the blanks with wild assumptions. How far reaching was what Piotr had gotten himself involved in going? How many X-men were involved?

When the Russian got up and excused himself from the table she slid a little lower in her seat and raised her book to cover her face. He walked right by her, heading for the restroom and she exhaled with relief, sitting the book down. That was when James noticed her, evident by the look on his face.

Oh crap!, she thought. Oh crap! Oh crap! Oh crap!

She stood up quickly knocking the coffee cup she had over and spilling it over the table. Kitty wasted no time cleaning it up, the X-man had to get out of there and fast. She dropped more money than she owed down, to appease leaving the nice waitress something to clean up and walked quickly to the women's restroom. They wouldn't follow her in here and never looking back she phased out of the bathroom and into the restroom's back alley. Looking over her shoulder she ran, expecting at any moment someone to come chasing her out of the back door of the place. What she hadn't expected was what she was about to find. The very man she had been following waiting for her at the end of the alley.

She slowed down and tried to look innocent, but the damage she knew was already done.

"Hey, Pete. Wow, small world huh? Running into you, out here. Strange."

She swallowed nervously as his looked at her and right through her.
