October 25th, Around 7pm She’d originally come down here to tell Hank, to see if she could get him to rig up her broken glove before she’d have to tell Scott. The problem with that idea soon worked itself out in her head. Scott ran the school. It wasn’t as if Dr. McCoy would keep it from him, and even if he did, Scott no doubt went over the expenses, okayed them, whatever, and Surge was sure that these things weren’t free. Besides, it was an accident, right? It was born from irresponsibility, but it was an accident. She came out of it we a bruised arm and shoulder, but she came out of it, and that was what mattered, right? She hoped. As she wandered around, her broken gloved popped and fizzled. It had gotten even worse. She wasn’t worried about the dent or the crack that ran down the control panel, those were just superficial damage. But she had busted off the adjustment knob that allowed her to control the voltage of her blasts, and she was pretty sure some wiring was loose, or something important inside was broken, because the glove itself wasn’t retaining any charge. This caused her to be jumpy and hyper all day. She didn’t concentrate in any classes, she couldn’t even remember what classes she had gone to. All hopes of simply living with it faded quickly, as she was beginning to annoy herself. She’d been short with friends, and flighty in any sort of conversation she tried to uphold. At the last bell, she hurried to her room, dropped her stuff off, and went off to the path that ran through the wooded areas of the estate to run off the energy that had been driving her crazy all day. When she got back to the school, she could already feel the electricity flowing from the building’s wiring, the lighting itself, and everything electronic she passed by jacking itself into her system. As she neared the hanger, where she’d been told Scott was, the lights faded in and out at her passing. Hank had done good with these things, but they weren’t designed to run one at a time. She knew now how useful they were, as unless she turned or took them off, this stuff never happened any more. Her thoughts drifted to how Cyclops would take the news. “I should have gone to him the second I got back.” She muttered to herself in the cool, sterile halls of the mansion’s sub-basement. “I feel like I lied without even lying.” She heard a little activity coming from the hangar as she drew near, affirmation that at least somebody was inside. ’Maybe he won’t be angry.’ She thought, her face screwing into an expression somewhere between hope and worry. ’Who am I kidding? If he isn’t angry, he’ll probably be disappointed…I’m not sure which one is worse. I’d rather be yelled at than lectured. At least if I get yelled at I can feel like a victim. She slapped herself lightly across the face, reprimanding herself. The glove sent out a spark and a zzt noise as her inner monologue droned on. Jeez, Nori, come on! You messed this up, you gotta deal with it. Nobody’s fault but your own. No fate but what you make. Just admit you shoulda been lookin’ both ways when you crossed the damn road. That’s something a five year old knows. Holy crap, she’d already been lecturing herself. She could tell the electricity was getting to her, she’d lost herself in thought for so long that she hadn’t realized she was standing right in front of the door to the Hangar. Do or die. It had to be done. One of the things she’d learned in her time here was that you couldn’t hide a problem, not an obvious one. Walking over the threshold, she moved to the side of the door and rapped on the metal wall inside. It echoed for a few seconds in the vacuous space of the hangar. She looked up. She’d never been in here before. She’d seen the door before. It was a nice door. She’d seen the roof, ehr, the Basketball Court. It was a nice court. Oh crap, her brain was scattering itself around her skull again. Shoot. Was she still knocking? Her eyes shot from the roof down to the Blackbird and finally over to where Mr. Summers was standing. “Erh..Uh. Cyclops? I mean, sorry….eh. …dangit.” She through her fists down to her sides as if making a concerted effort to say something different. “Mr. Summers?” The color drained from her face as she began to chicken up real good. “I..uh…I made…” Out with it, Noriko!, the words her father used with her when she couldn’t bring up the courage to tell him the truth rattled around in the blitzkrieg that was going on in her mind. Finally, the words she was looking for organized themselves and made a beeline for her vocal chords. They came out in an avalanche, some unholy amalgam of nouns and verbs and other grammatical pieces parts that was made even harder to understand with the unique acoustics provided by the hangar itself and the distance between her and the person she was talking to. “I made a really big mistake and might have broken my gloves I’m so sorry please don’t give me weekend detention I really need my job...” Deep breath, Noriko. Admitting it was the first step. |

Punches from the Punch Dimension
|
The time between class and supper was pretty relaxing for Scott. He tended to use this time to work on his own specific projects, some of which were important, some what passed for fun for him, and some managed to be both. He was at the moment working on the blueprints for the helicopter he'd promised to build with Avery. The green hued nurse was a gear head and she had begged him to work on a smaller scale air transport so that they could travel less conspicuously if necessary. It was going to be a rebuild, actually, Scott already scouting about for a servicable and salvageable used copter that they could refurbish and modify, the idea being that it would not only be safer to have a working base, but more fun to rebuild. The lights overhead began to flicker, and Scott looked up, with a frown. He stood up, tapping a finger on the worklight to see if the bulb had come lose, but it seemed fine. His frown grew deeper and he turned to investigate when he heard the knock on the door. A stuttering and stammering Noriko Ashida stood there, explaining that she had broken her power control gauntlet. "Come in, Miss Ashida," Scott said, moving quickly to the supply closet where their more interesting bits of technology were kept. He removed one of the null cuffs, and said, "Put this on, for now, and let me see what I can do for you." Taking her hand in his, so that he could examine her broken gauntlet, he was relieved he was wearing his sunglasses as opposed to the visor. It was an electronic device though the battery was a rechargable sort with a solar back up, and if it should malfunction because of her powers, that would be a problem indeed. "This doesn't look too bad, I could definitely get a repair done for you within a few hours, so until then, keep the null cuff on." Looking up at her, he said, "You want to tell me how this happened or is it something I'd be better off not knowing. I'm going to make you tell me, you realize, I'm just wondering how much you're willing to volunteer." |

Noriko unfastened the seals and pulled both gloves off, quickly fastening the null cuff around her unbruised wrist. It was like her thought polarized, totally organized and free of any sort of interference. The leg that she had been tapping incessantly slowed to a stop, and all was right with the world. In the cool of the hanger, her arms immediately got tingly and goosepimples reared their ugly head. Rubbing her hands on her arm until they went away, she looked up to Cyclops as he eyed the machinery. She’d spent so much time with these things on that having the lightness of her natural arms restored was awkward. Scott didn’t seem angry, or disappointed. Maybe she’d been fretting about nothing. When he mentioned being able to repair the ailing apparatus in only a few hours, she smiled. That’s good. It wasn’t as bad as I thought. She was about to ask what was wrong with it when Mr. Summers returned to the conversation with a new question; the how’s and why’s of its breaking. As he asked asked whether or not she should know how it happened, she thought she was safe. ’Wow, at least I get options…’ Scott then continued on that he was determined that he’d get his answer, and that he was just seeing how many beans she’d spill without further convincing. Now it wasn’t like she’d done anything wrong by school policy. She’d signed out, she’d been approved to go into Mutant Town, she’d been back on time, she’d not caused any trouble. But the sheer fact of the matter was that she’d been a moron. Walking and playing with a gadget while she should have been paying attention to her surroundings. It was something she’d personally poked fun at other people for time and time again, and the fact that she too had almost caused injury to herself but whoever had been in that car focusing on something that could have waited just completely embarrassed her. Oh well..it wasn’t like her friends were around, she didn’t exactly need to save face. “Uh..well…I went out to Mutant Town yesterday with Kelrian, and I was getting some new running shoes from this place that sells mutant-specific stuff, and, Kel was off doing some of his own business, and we were gonna meet back up afterwards.” Her hand shifted to the back of her neck, rubbing it. That was a sign that she didn’t want to say more, and she was thinking of how to put it. Everybody had their tells, and Noriko was no different. Forcing herself, she continued. “Well, it was stupid. I came outta the shop and was waiting at the crosswalk and I thought the light turned and started crossing but this guy wasn’t watchin either and he almost hit me.” She put her hands behind her back and looked down. “This guy came outta nowhere and shoved me outta the way, he, uh…teleports, so he got me outta the way. But when we hit the ground at the other side of the street, my gloves smashed into the curb pretty hard, so that’s why my chest and arm are all bruised up, and…well…the glove.” Her head pointed down and her eyes focused on the pristine floor. “I’m sorry, Mr. Summers. I shoulda come to you right away, but I was afraid to get in trouble. I thought I could just deal with it being busted, but its causing some serious problems.” |

"Ah," Scott said, "Clumsiness and inattention instead of an attack or horseplay," He looked down at the gauntlet, examining the break with interest, "You're lucky that teleporter was around, but I think, probably, the scare was punishment enough, yes? You'll be more careful from now on?" He set the gauntlets on the work table, lined up perfectly with each other, not as if it was intentional, just like that was how Scott was. He was dressed in jeans and a dark colored long sleeved t-shirt, tennis shoes, his hair perfectly combed. He didn't entirely look like someone who was working at the moment, but he didn't look like the team leader of a superhero school either. Even with the ever present red glasses, he was about as unimposing as he ever was, and if he was aware that she had been so nervous coming in here, he definitely didn't show it. "You're lucky though that your powers didn't lose control, though," he said, "You've a dangerous and uncontrollable power, that could cause a great deal of damage if you're not careful." He tapped a finger on the frame of his glasses, lightly, knowing by long experience exactly how much movement it would take to dislodge his protective device. "I know from experience. When I was first learning how to control my powers, at least to the degree that I'm able to control them, I gave the school more skylights than I am willing to admit." He smiled, "Mutants like you and I need to exercise a little more caution than others. You think you can promise me that you'll give that a try?" He picked up the undamaged glove and said, "Miss Ashida, these aren't very practical, are they? I imagine it's been difficult to wear them without drawing attention. I'm wondering if there might be something a little more... I hate to use the word fashionable, since I am repeatedly reminded that fashionable is the last thing I am, but, perhaps a little less conspicuous, more refined and upgraded technology. If you'd seen my first visor mechanism, you'd see how clunky emergency tech can be. X-Factor has a mechanokinetic on their team, would you like me to give him a call and see what we can do for you?" |

As Cyclops reflected on her story, she sighed a bit in relief as he added the idea that being shaken up from the whole ordeal. She didn’t know why she’d been so worried. Maybe she was worried more about the expense of the gloves as opposed to the actual event that lead to their damage. When he inquired as to whether or not she’d be more careful in the future, she nodded, finally able to look at him in the face. “Yeah, no more cel-phone to text on, anyways. That was the one thing the car hit. hit.” She thought about the fifty dollar replacement fee she’d learned of over the phone and grimaced. More money out the door. More lessons learned. “If it means anything, I don’t think the driver was paying any more attention than I was.” ’Jerk…’ she added in her head about the guy who’d almost killed her. As Scott took the equipment over to his work-bench, she followed, careful not to get into his light. Now that telling him was out of the way, she let her defenses down a bit. He started telling her about how mutants like he and she had to be more careful due to the unstable nature of their superhuman abilities. She knew all too well the implications. She’d almost killed the two people who brought her here simply due to lack of control. When he ended his speech with a question, she again nodded. “Yes, Mr. Summers. I think I can do that.” The tone of her voice was resigned, as if admitting defeat. She didn’t know why, he obviously wasn’t angry and he wasn’t disappointed, either, not that he’d mentioned anyhow. She just didn’t like letting people down. As she looked on, she took a step back when he picked up the one working glove and held it to the light. The two years of wear and tear became obvious in the stark fluorescence of his workspace. Little dings and dents. Smudges and whatnot. Surge felt a little embarrassed. She was active. She played around a lot, horsed around with sports and stuff, but at the end of the day she would take care of the things that made her now-normal life possible. She’d shine ‘em down with armor-all wipes and everything, but here and now, in the harsh light of examinations, she’d seen how many childish adventures she’d put the things through in every miniscule scar and ding present under the light. Scott brought up the prospect of streamlining them, an idea he’d danced around before. His mention of somebody over at X-Factor who might be able to help stirred up a bittersweet smile. Noriko would kind of hate to see the old things go, but she had to admit that while she was wearing this null cuff, she was finding the lack of weight on her arms sort of liberating. Again, she nodded, before adding. “That’d be cool…but, I mean…well, isn’t that kind of stuff expensive?” |

Noriko Ashida. She was a good kid, compared to so many her at the school who felt they were entitled because of the misfortunes of their lives. She had a job, made good grades, and was well behaved. The loss of her cell phone was clearly weighing heavily on her and now she was concerned about the price of the gauntlets. Responsible and considerate. Scott's smile actually managed to convey a bit of warmth. He hooked a thumb at the Blackbird that rested in its place in the hangarm shiny black and beautiful. "If we can afford my toy, then I suppose we can spare a little bit for yours." He held up the gauntlet and said, "I was watching Tony Stark's press conference regarding the new collapsible body armor he'd built for military use, and I think, with Mr. Jeffries's aid, we can get it compact and light weight for you. It will require you take some heightened training sessions in the DR to get used to the functionality, but I think we can figure this out." Looking at the girl he said, "While I have you hostage here, Miss Ashida, let me ask you, what is it you want from the school? You're almost ready to graduate, you've a job, your powers are nominally within your control. What exactly is it you want? Are you planning on stepping up your training and attempting to join the active team, or will you be leaving us once your education is finished? There's a thousand options in between, which are you thinking?" |

Brown eyes whipped across the chamber to rest on the Black Bird. She’d seen it before, seen it in flight before, when it would rise up out of the basketball court. She’d never been in it, however. But she figured she’d eventually get to see its interior, at least once. For the moment, all apprehension faded from her face as Scott cracked a rare smile. She respected him greatly. He held so many people in the palm of his hand. He had a lot of sway with a lot of people. She respected everybody here for different things. Mr. Logan was strong, Dr. McCoy a genius, Mr. Wagner truly understanding of everybody’s differences. But Mr. Summers, she found, his was a sort of combination of all of theirs, to a certain degree. Scott Summers, the mutant known as Cyclops, was the real keystone that held the whole Institute, and by extension, the X-Men, together. A true leader. Everything she aspired to be in the time since Apocalypse’s attacks, perhaps even before that. She knew a little about Tony Stark. One second, the news would be heralding some amazing new development he had ushered in, and the next, it would be ripping him to shreds over some faux pas they found him responsible for. But ahead of it all, he was some big military tech big-wig. The idea of getting something made for her based on the technology invented by somebody of that caliber was kind of a thrilling one, and she went wide-eyed at the possibility. She let her gaze drift back from the Jet to Mr. Summers. “That’d be…well. It’d be…” she shrugged, a skittish smile painting her face. “I really don’t know what to say, that’d be kinda awesome.” There, that was something. Then Scott asked an important and serious question. What were her goals? It was something she’d thought about quite often, and while she knew the answer the second he asked the question, she took a few moments to collect the thoughts and reflect on what she was about to say. “Well, Mr. Summers…I’ve been through a lot here. I mean, I came here two years ago, and I know that’s not as long as some others, but, and believe me when I say this…this school is more important to me than anything. I thought about maybe, ya know taking some college stuff, but I’ve got nobody outside of this school. I mean, yeah, I got Keitaro, but, he’s still in Japan, and I’m not even sure where…” She put her hands behind her, standing at a sort of relaxed attention. “What I’m saying is that I, I believe that my time here has been a stepping stone to something more important than me. I mean, I wound up here seemingly at random, and I don’t believe that I came here of all places, on my own, just by some sheer stroke of dumb luck. In fact, I refuse to believe that.” Her arms crossed themselves across her chest and she fidgeted, putting her weight back on one foot. “I think that destiny meant something by getting me here, and I think that thing is that I should join the X-Men. I mean, really. I want to help people, people like me, who thought they didn’t have a place because the people that were supposed to love them and be there for them can’t bring themselves to deal with what we are. I mean, it’s all over nowadays. People like Magneto and Apocalypse, I wanna show humanity that those kind of people are the exception, not the rule.” Her face moved into a sort of thoughtful frown. “My father died thinking mutants were the scum of the earth. I want to help people to realize that that’s not the case, and I think I can best do that by helping them, like you guys do.” She finished by pointing to the cuff on her wrist. “Before these sorts of things get forced on all of us.” |

Punches from the Punch Dimension

Listening to her speech, Scott filled with admiration and pride. She was an example of what they were trying to do here, what their goal was. To raise young mutants who might not have otherwise have a chance to be strong and productive members of society. She was proof that they were doing good work here, that this school was more than an educational facility. Scott had, since his return from the strange world where this had not been an option, been struggling with what it was they did, why they did this, but hearing this girl's bold and mature words, Scott felt satisfied. He knew it was right, he knew it was what should be. "I think, Miss Ashida, that perhaps it's time we step up your training, get you firmly onto the X-Man tract, if you're interested in it," Scott told her, "On the condition you keep your grades up, I think you'd be a good candidate for the leadership program. It would require you to have a slightly heavier training schedule and take a few extra classes, but I think you can handle it, and I think you'll find it very rewarding. You want to help others, you want to make this world a better place, well, let's see if we can help you find the means to do so, and the voice to explain to those who need to hear." Scott met her eyes as best as he could considering his limitations, and he said, "This isn't an easy task you've set before yourself, but we're here to do what we can do for this world. Some people chose to destroy it, others to help it. It's harder to do the right thing, but without people willing to make those sacrifices, to do that work, this world would be a horrible place." |

Scott telling her he believed in her enough to step her training up another notch was almost enough to take the wind out of her. She felt like she was in the spotlight, if only for a second. As he went on, her thoughts began to turn to what sort of intensity her training would be kicked up to. More DR sessions, more classes, more training in everything academic, martial, and in between. She was sure she could do it. She’d made it this far, hadn’t she? And keeping her grades up? Shouldn’t be too hard, her lowest grade was a C, and that was in Biology. She could learn, especially if she had something worthwhile to work towards. This sort of thing would give her a goal, something to look forward to and something to reach out and achieve. Like she had mentioned to Scott only just previously; where would she go? With the exception of the guy she met on the streets the other day, she had no contacts outside of Xavier’s. Her friends were here, her family was here. Most importantly, her home was here. The planet had gone through some dark times in the past few years, and that had only strengthened her resolve. The events during Apocalypse’s reign, that had sealed her decision. When she saw that her powers could save lives, even if only in certain situations, something changed in her, woke up to smell the coffee. She knew then that these powers she’d been given by the dice-rolls of fate weren’t some sort of heavy handed curse, but rather a sort of gift. It was how to use these gifts in the course of helping others that she needed to find out for herself, evolution had given her the tools to work with, she just needed the right situation to guide her to the owner’s manual. Noriko had come along way from accidentally shutting off the toaster in the kitchen. Scott was right, she more or less had the ins and outs of her powers down. She knew how much zap she could hold before she had to do something about it, she knew how to keep the intensity of her powers down when she needed to, and how to increase them when things got dire. She was ready to kick it up a notch, to show that she could, in fact, live up to Mr. Summer’s expectations, and perhaps, hopefully even surpass them. As his own speech drew to a close, she looked him straight in the eyes, as far as she could past the red tint of his glasses. Stepping forward, she put out her hand. The arm it was hung on was still bruised a bit from her fall, but the assertive maneuver was one of confidence nonetheless. “Mr. Summers, I’m both happy and honored that you have that kind of trust in me.” Somewhere, deep in the back of her mind, she could hear her father, yelling about dishonor to the family name, completely panning the idea that a mutant could be part of the same bloodline as him. It was in that dark corner of her brain that Noriko Ashida finally said to her father what she’d been wanting to for four years. ’Whatever, dad. I’m not listening to your crap any more. I’m a mutant, but at the same time, I’m more human than you ever could be...’ She only wished that he was there to hear it. “Well,” she said, eyes moving to his workbench. “Where do we start? I mean, I better learn to mess with ‘em in case I need to use em as a backup or somethin’.” |

Punches from the Punch Dimension
|
The girl paused and Scott could almost hear the thoughts that were whirling through her head right now. He knew about her conflict with her father, the conflict that would never entirely be resolved now. She wasn't the only one here who had been disowned, and while Scott always hoped that his own parents would have understood that his mutancy did not make him any less their son, the truth was, he didn't know. Chris and Kathy might have looked at the children they had raised and seen only monsters with uncontrollable and dangerous powers. It hurt to think of that possibility, but it could not be entirely dismissed. Noriko, though, made the decision that he had hoped she would, offering her hand formally in a shake to seal it. He took her small bruised hand in his long fingered grip, gently but firmly, "Don't consider this a favor or charity, Miss Ashida. I'm not offering you this chance out of the goodness of my heart. I believe you have it in you to be someone amazing, and if anyone should be happy about this, it's the people you'll help. I have complete faith in you, and I don't expect to be disappointed." He looked at her sternly, but one corner of his lips was quirked up, "You'll do fine, I'm sure of it." She asked where to go from here, and he said, "Give me a couple hours to fix the gauntlets and then I'll put in a call to X-Factor, set up an appointment with you to go out and see Jeffries. I say within a week we can have you training with your new equipment. Sound good?" He looked at the clock and said, "But let's get this finished up after supper. You have no idea how many times my wife has lectured me about working through meals." Scott extended his hand towards the door, "If it matters at all, Miss Ashida, I'm very proud of your progress. You're one of the ones who makes me realize the good we're doing here, and how much good there is still to be done." |

As they shook hands, she nodded as he assured her not to let his confidence in her to go to her head. At first off-put, she smiled in turn as he revealed a tiny hint of a grin at the corner of his mouth. Noriko grinned and then quirked an eyebrow. “Favors? Charity? An X-Man craves not these things.” Her tone was half levity, half seriousness. Sometimes, Cyclops’ serious nature made her uneasy, and she cracked a joke to clear the air. She didn’t know if Mr. Summers was into Star Wars, but she figured however he interpreted it, it was true either way. The X-Men didn’t do what they did out of a desire to be thought of as anything other than equals. They didn’t expect payment, they didn’t expect anything accept tolerance. Once again Scott affirmed his confidence in her, and Surge found her spirits finally lifted after what had started out to be a terrible day. When he brought up that he could fix the gauntlets to work, she was relieved. She didn’t want to walk around with a null cuff on too long, lest she get used to being without the heavy Arc Gauntlets weighing her down. Rethinking that, she realized that, if Mr. Summers was right, she’d be without them in a week or so. “Sounds great.” She confirmed. She really couldn’t wait to see what sort of gadget came out of the mind of somebody whose mutation revolved around, well, making gadgetry. At the mention of supper, she felt a pang in her gut, reminding that she’d skipped lunch today. Without her body being flooded with electric energies that could keep her active and on the move, thanks to the null cuff, she realized that she was starving. At the mention of Mrs. Grey-Summers, she smiled. “Wouldn’t want to upset her, would ya? Dinner sounds awfully ace right now, though.” Turning around, she shoved her hands in her pockets and began walking back towards the exit of the hangar so that Cyclops could close it up. His closing comment brought even more confidence into her head. Reaching the doorway and looking back, she called back to him. “That matters a lot to me, sir. I’ll see you after dinner.” She stepped outside and began her trek towards the elevator, a new spring in her step courtesy of good moods an high spirits all the way from the lift to the dining hall. |
