28th October
Afternoon

So far Sanctuary had been a little slice of paradise for a mutant such as Aegis. Even with public tension between the civilians, Brotherhood and Genoshan's tightening ominously in the background, this place was a realm through which the glowing mutant traversed without worry or secret shame. No one on the streets gawked at her complexion, no one pointed, snickered, swore or laughed. None of that. Instead, Aegis quite happily became another face in the mutant crowd and for one of the first times in her life she drew in the comfort of conformity. This place had been good to her and now she was fulfilling her duty of contribution.

Sample collection. Some mutants in Sanctuary had only partial control over their abilities, which wouldn't be a problem if none of them were lethal, or in this case, highly poisonous.

It was a job usually reserved for lab assistants but Aegis had wanted to get her hands dirty, so to speak. Menial work or not, any task that plucked her up from the laboratory and delivered her into the streets of the fledgling community was a welcome gesture in her eyes. And so, with a skip in her step and a tune humming at the back of her throat, Aegis proceeded to the apartment of one Mr Dustin Reed, a.k.a Toxin. He had been one of the first mutants in Sanctuary she had spoken to, several days earlier. It amused her that they kept running into each other.

She wasn't dressed in a ghostly white lab coat, but rather her usual day-to-day clothes. An ID card in her right pocket carried proof enough of who she was, as did the small selection of vials, swabs and other gathering tools contained in a small, box-shaped satchel bouncing against her hip. The walk to Toxins apartment building wasn't far, and several minutes after departing from the lab Aegis was passing through its yawning entrance.

Nimbly making her way up the stairs, Aegis located the appropriate door number and positioned herself in front of it. Before knocking, the glowing mutant ran some minor details past the little tablet computer she had brought with her; the cyan markings across its screen offering any other anatomical details Toxin would have volunteered.

Once she had committed it to short-term memory, Aegis tucked the small device into her jacket before knocking on the door.

[the day after Dizzy Spells]
The day before Dustin had been very ill, and it had been unlike any sickness he'd experienced in his life. In fact, it had been very much like the day his powers first flooded his body with poison, the day his body started changing. Fortunately Dustin was, for the most part, feeling better. The flu-like symptoms were gone, the chills, the muscle aches, the stomach discomfort, the dizzy spells. He didn't feel well, but he no longer felt ill.

He'd requested someone to be sent over to discuss what had happened and for the first time to take proper stock of his powers. What they were, besides the general understanding that he was very toxic and had some physical mutations... He'd come to understand the severity of the toxins he exuded depended entirely on his emotions. If he was afraid or angry, it was a painful death for those who were foolish enough to mess with him. If they were lucky. And that didn't take into account his highly venomous nails or the pointed canines that secreted anesthesia.

Dustin had yet to really study it as it was less than a year since he'd come into his powers and had not much at his disposal until recently. He had everything perfectly under control, or at least properly contained, but he did not understand everything. And Toxin wanted to understand. Perhaps he was a 'feral' mutant, but he was not feral in the strictest sense of the word. That aspect of his nature had yet to overwhelm him, but rather seemed to merge with his own good senses.

Absolutely none of this information was available to any organization other than the Brotherhood, and the information that they had was simply of the physical mutation, his toxicity, and the skills learned through Manslaughter. Unless Aegis' computer was one of theirs [from a BH laboratory rather than a Sanctuary run lab], it would have not have the information on him. None except the Brotherhood needed such details on him, and the information that would be learned from this would not be shared with any others, even within Sanctuary.

Toxin was making lunch when knocking sounded. After quickly wiping blue pleather gloves off on a hand towel, he approached the door and opened it. A face he'd seen several days ago, when he arrived. She smelled sharply of disinfectants and such... from the lab he supposed. That'd make sense if she was the one they'd sent. "Hello..." he said, standing in the doorway. "May I help you?" the young man asked, although he had some idea why she might be there. He might be wrong of course. Assumptions tended to make people make asses of themselves.

Aegis didn't have to wait long before her rapping on the door was answered. The wood swung open and standing in the frame was a young fellow, barely a couple years junior to herself, with a pair of intense blue eyes. Aegis had met him before, but only in passing. She hadn't become familiar enough to remember his name, as there had been another young fellow by his side when she had stood at Sanctuary's opening.

To nullify the risk of getting his name wrong, Aegis would allow him to identify himself.

'Afternoon,' the glowing mutant smiled. Her words were still laced with her distinctively educated accent that hinted at her origins in human society. 'I'm Jeanette Lacroix, but please, call me Aegis. Everyone else does.'

Aegis hoped that the fellow would at least remain amiable, even if he was fiercely protective of his privacy. She could imagine that popping around to peoples houses and asking to take biological samples of the substances their body secreted wasn't the most marvelous of situations. But, still, records stated that Toxin was a loyal member of the Brotherhood, so Aegis couldn't foresee any real problems.

'As you probably know, the Brotherhood is assisting Sanctuary security and medical in what ways that it can. I'm here to collect some samples - was the house informed of my coming?'

For the teeming masses, it was easy to forget that an entire ocean swirled above their heads, continuing about their daily lives in a mutant utopia. For Roger it was not so simple, his mind unfurling like smoke and wrapping around the synapses of gills and swim bladders as he lay in his bed, an entire galaxy of biological electricity sputtering distantly over his head. He often fell asleep counting fishes instead of sheep, dreaming he was swimming up into the sky and falling into it when he breached the surface.

It was almost disillusioning to wake up underwater.

The redhead contemplated these aquatic creatures above him as he lay sprawled across the tossed lump of his covers, scratching quietly in a spiral-bound notebook with a yellow pencil. Nearing the end of drawing a monstrous bloody creature, his focus was adjusted by a rustle in the common area as there was a knock on the door. Having company was not unusual, but the bodily reading Roger was registering was both familiar and unfamiliar. Curious, he slid from his bed softly, making no noise on the floor in his festive orange and black socks. Mumbling quietly, Roger roughly rubbed a hand through his hair, succeeding in shoving the unkempt mess into a poof.

In his practiced deadly silence, Roger crept out into the hallway, his fingers trailing across the wall as he heard an exchange of voices. Dustin. And a woman's. Without announcing his presence, he shuffled into the common room, tilting his head at a familiar head of purple hair at the door of their flat. I'm here to collect some samples - was the house informed of my coming?

Roger shoved his hands down into his pockets, casting his gaze towards the phone on the end table, remembering a fuzzy conversation that he had stopped listening to after 'injection', at that point slamming the phone into the cradle so that the speaker was silenced. As for this occurrence, he said nothing, picking out a fun-size Snickers from the chest pocket on his t-shirt and rustling the wrapper, making no indication for a polite introduction--as if he had ever given one before.

"... good afternoon," Dustin responded to the woman's greeting. He did not entirely remember her name from their previous encounters. He'd been rather distracted the last time he'd heard it, and back in Murderworld he'd simply been preoccupied with his training. "Aegis... mine is Dustin Reed, call me Toxin," he said with a slight smile. It was mostly politeness. His grandmother had brought him up well of course.

He was about to invite her inside, regardless of the purpose of the visit. Making her stand out there in the hallway was not necessary as they discussed whatever it is that she wanted. And at least the pumpkin bits were cleaned up from the efforts to decorate the apartment for the upcoming holiday.

At her last words, gloved fingers tapped at his bottom lip. "I don't believe so. What precisely do you mean about collecting samples and what are they intended for? If you cannot answer this to my satisfaction, I would have to say that 'no' is the most polite answer that you would get today." Blue eyes were narrowed in thought. He was naturally too trusting. There was a point where that backfired and reversed completely. While generally he trusted the Brotherhood, the trust of individuals had to be earned. What would she want these samples for?

Quiet shuffled steps went unnoticed. However, the crackling of a candy wrapper opening was hardly silent. Dustin took a step back from the door and gestured for Aegis to come inside. "Take a seat. Sorry, I wasn't thinking... you don't need to stand out there while we talk," he said, realizing that he had been making her do just that. Though it hadn't been very long, he did sorta know her. She did something with metals, if he remembered properly. Not waiting for her, he followed his own suggestion taking a seat on the sofa, smiling at Roger as he passed him by.

"Oh and please close the door on your way in. Pierce is loose in the apartment again and I don't need to loose him in the building," the young man said to their guest, referring to his newest pet. His first pet actually. It was a snake. A young ball python... they weren't supposed to be hard to take care of, but apparently the thing was an escape artist. From what he read that wasn't unusual, but it wasn't causing any harm loose in the apartment. Other than scaring some of the housemates.

Not long after sitting down, he spotted something beside the couch. Not bothering hiding, huh? Reaching down, he picked up the snake with lack of concern and plopped it on his lap.

Jeanette stood patiently as Toxin eyed her up and down, his pupils scrutinising her intentions after the revelation of her purpose for being here.

It was hardly surprising. Jeanette couldn't really say that she blamed him. People always became wary around scientists, particularly ones that wanted to collect samples from their bodies. So in response, the glowing mutant maintained her professional veneer and allowed the young fellow all the time he desired.

"What precisely do you mean about collecting samples and what are they intended for?."

Right - Jeanette had been rehearsing this. Usually she would have been accompanied by someone more apt at persuasion than she was, a face. Such an individual would do the yabbing while she'd do the stabbing!

Best not to put it like that, the glowing mutant thought to herself.

But before she could answer Toxin's question, the young gent stood away from the door and graciously allowed her entry. Entering the premise, Jeanette did as requested and closed the door behind her. Now that she was inside she spotted the second mutant, Manslaughter, who was busying himself with a chocolate bar.

Jeanette offered him a polite smile.

'Afternoon,' she greeted, while setting her little pack on the kitchen bench. Unzipping the bag to reveal inside an assortment of swabs, vials and little containers, Jeanette produced a pair of surgical gloves and started to put them on. As she did so, she turned to look at Toxin, who had seated himself comfortably on the couch - her eyes widening as she spotted the coil of snake nested in his lap.

'Wow, what breed is that?' Jeanette asked, the corners of her mouth curling into a smile as she stared at the creature. The last time she'd been amongst snakes had been her time in the Columbian jungles, fighting the drug cartels: it was quite a treat to come face to face with another. Well, a non-poisonous one at least. Venomous snakes wouldn't be allowed to be kept as pets.

'I heard they make great pets for professionals that work most of the day, because they're very low maintenance - is that true?'
