Dec 12 11:00 pm. ______________________________________________________________________________ It was night, at least it should have been. Manuel stood under the twinkling lights he knew weren't real stars and took deep breaths of oxygen he knew hadn't blown across the ocean, this was just another place he didn't want to be. This place, the place Empath was now supposed to call home was just shining example of what the Spaniard thought was wring the The Brotherhood of Mutants to begin with. Just like Magnetos evermore backward message it meant nothing. A charade with no real justification in his eyes. The grass beneath his feet, the water flowing through the creek and onto the city streets just a short distance from him would normally sooth the man, but now, at the edge of a city under the ocean it just seemed lifeless. Spain was different, Spain was real, the people didn't want these things, they didn't want total control, they didn't wish to live as a superior race, they just wanted to be happy, they just wanted peace. Life was just too hard this way, Magneto and his followers would never be satisfied and nothing would ever be good enough if they kept down this road of self-importance and superiority. Manuel hated these people for these reasons and so many more. The tall muscular man noticed Mystique in the distance, maybe she was watching him, maybe she wasn't, he didn't really know. Empath had never put much thought into the woman, he knew little of her other than her ability to become anyone she choose, she could even be him. The empathic mutant wondered just how deep her faith in Magnetos message ran, just how much of her mind she had allowed his disease to infect. Looking over his shoulder and noticing the woman still behind him, the Spaniard bent to his knee and cupped water form the stream in his hand. "He's wrong ya know, we aren't better, if we were better... we wouldn't be hiding beneath the water, afraid of the world above" Manuels voice was harsh and deep as he spoke into the air without turning his head to meet Ravens eyes. "Its not a game, and we're not children. Its just foolishness now, all of it." The water beneath him, reflecting the image of what was once a hate filled mutant, now told a different story. Empaths face shown more trouble than it once did. The bronze Spanish skin that lined his body now tingled with restlessness, the quiet calm Manuel spent his youth learning to project upon himself was now hate, but hate of a different kind. So much of the mans life since arriving in New York had been spent in the beds of beautiful women who meant nothing to the man. The hate he once had for humanity had begun to fade, years of emotional rape and manipulation on everyone he met had taken its toll upon him. Something would have to change, whatever the cost. |

Mystique had enjoyed her time thus far within the Sanctuary. Despite the knowledge that everything about the environment was fake, it had been so beautifully planned and executed that it did not matter. The world above was full of pollution, discrimination, crime and hate while Sanctuary had been the polar opposite so far. She knew that things would arise as they always would among any large group of people, but she doubted it would ever escalate to the way it was above. It was getting late. 11 PM was nearly past her bed time lately since she had been back. However, she had decided to linger in one of the parks near the outskirts of the city and enjoy the gentle breeze that was blowing inland. The park was well lit and landscaped to perfection, with walking paths, benches and playground scattered throughout a lightly wooded area. There was even a creek that went through the park that led from a source unknown to her and into the city's water supply. As fate would have it, Raven walked through one of the walking trails and caught a glimpse of a fellow member of the Brotherhood, Empath. He seemed to be out enjoying the night much like she was, partaking in the Sanctuary's many different locations and settings. The simulation was so complete, she really had a hard time telling the difference between the world above and the Sanctuary below. She kept her distance from him as he walked down towards the creek, but then walked towards him as he seemed to take notice of her. Time to be social. Manuel bent down to the creek about the time that Raven approached him and she put her hands in the pockets of her tan trench coat, yellow eyes flashing down to the surface of the water as he cupped it with one hand. It was a cold night, simulated or not. The seasons seemed to be aligned in harmony with the northern hemisphere, particularly the east coast of the United States. "He's wrong ya know, we aren't better, if we were better... we wouldn't be hiding beneath the water, afraid of the world above,” Empath started, speaking more harshly than she had expected him to. "Its not a game, and we're not children. Its just foolishness now, all of it." Raven was slightly caught off guard by his words. She had never really talked to the man on a personal level, but she had expected to just exchange pleasantries with him and be on her way. Instead, he spoke words that could be considered treasonous in the right company. Mystique only turned away from him and more towards the water, all the while keeping her eyes on him as if she expected him to jump up at her. After letting silence sit there awkwardly for a moment, she finally considered her words. “Are you hiding from someone, Manuel?” Mystique asked, tilting her head slightly and raising one brow in question. “And whom are you afraid of? Because I do not see this as a place of hiding for the Brotherhood. It is a place of safety and refuge for those who are not capable of defending themselves,” she said calmly, not matching the harshness that he initiated the conversation with. “There are those of us with the ability to fight back. But then, there are those that do not have that capability. This is a place of safety for those who are persecuted for being mutant, but having no ability to fight against it.” Mystique took a step towards him, coming next to him, and then squatted down so that she was shoulder to shoulder with the man. She turned her head to the side and looked at him, letting her long red hair spill over one shoulder. For now, she did not appear angered or threatened by the man. “But you are right. This is no game. This is a new beginning,” Raven stated, nudging him slightly with her elbow. “So why are you finding the negatives in it?” |

The water was colder than Manuel thought it would be, feeling nothing like the warm waters of Spain, this was chilling on his skin. The night sky and distant city lights reflected against the stream just as thy would outside of this place, but that was little comfort to the man, he knew the truth, and he couldn't shake it from his head. He was now living in a place built just for the people he had begun to hate, and that didn't sit well with the man. Mystique spoke to Empath in a kinder tone than he thought she would, having not spent much time around the woman Manuel had only heard echos of her militant personality. “Are you hiding from someone, Manuel?” Mystique asked. "And whom are you afraid of? Because I do not see this as a place of hiding for the Brotherhood. It is a place of safety and refuge for those who are not capable of defending themselves," The blue skinned woman went on to ask the Spaniard more question about his faith in Sanctuary, giving the man her insight and telling him about hers. “But you are right. This is no game. This is a new beginning,” Raven stated, nudging him slightly with her elbow. “So why are you finding the negatives in it?” The tall bronze skinned man turned to his side, looking into the womans golden eyes, the thought came to alter her emotions in such a way she would better understand him, but the man choose to let her think for herself. Ravens blue skin looked inviting under the night sky and in almost any circumstance before today Manuel would have given in to the beauty and took her in his arms, enveloping himself in her warmth throughout the night. Tonight was different however, Empath didn't want another useless one night stand, he wanted something more and he didn't know if this place could provide it. "The negatives..." Manuels eyes narrowed as he gazed at Mystique. "Its pretty easy to find the bad in all of of this when thats all there is. Surely you dont follow these people so blindly, tell me you think for yourself..." the Spaniard stood to his feet. "Let me guess Raven. It was hard growing up the way you did, looking so different... The years of put-downs turned you into a heartless image of the person you once hoped to be. Let me tell you something about that. I know better than anyone, you get two options in this life, you can let it consume you and turn you into nothing, or you can let it burn out." Manuel spoke in anger at the woman. "The bad thing though, neither choice has a happy ending, either way your fucked, either way you end up hollow. I just stopped caring about the hate, its easier. So, let me guess, you'd rather follow that pied piper you call a leader, because thats easier to you than actually realizing the truth" Empaths lip curled as he stared into Ravens eyes. Perhaps she had only wanted a civil conversation with the man, but at this point conversations like that were a thing of the past, it seemed no one realized what was happening around them, as though they were all blinded by a faith in stupidity. "I used to think humans were the worst of all, I thought they were beneath us, a lesser being. Having been with these people however has brought into sharp light just how fucked up we are. how less we have become." |

Raven looked away from him and down towards the water from where she squatted next to him, attempting to figure out what exactly this man was going through. She listened to him and what he had to say, how he had her so figured out and how naïve everyone was being about the war against humanity. Manuel even seemed to let his anger grow. Mystique slowly stood as Empath did, finally looking at him as he finished speaking his mind. “Do you think that you have me figured out so easily?” she asked, taking a step towards him in order to keep the space between them closer than he would probably find comfortable. Mystique's height allowed her to look the man directly in the eyes unafraid, even with the knowledge that he could alter her way of thinking on a whim. She had faith that he hadn't fallen off the deep end enough to try that. “You ask me the question, 'Do you think for yourself?' and then accuse me of following blindly all in the same breath,” Raven said, the corner of her mouth curling upwards slightly in a challenging smile. “So you would not believe my answer, even if I told you want you wanted to hear.” Mystique exhaled sharply from her nose as if she were about to laugh, but she stopped herself short, leaving it at that as the smile grew slightly on her face. “But I shall humor you. The answer is that I do think for myself. I have lived many years on this earth and I am far older than you might believe. I have seen our current situation evolve first hand. Are you so ignorant to think that we did not try to live among the humans peacefully? Do you think that we started this all?” Raven asked, as the wind picked up slightly in order to cause her lengthy hair to dance around her face, curling into her eyes and mouth. She raised a hand up and pulled a strand from between her lips, continuing to stare Empath down. “You have no idea what you are saying... and you are being ignorant, ignoring the facts that have led us to where we are today,” Raven stated, shaking her head once as disgust began to come to her. To think that she would have to have this conversation here. “I would be willing to bet that you don't even know the truth, yourself. I can not believe that you think that we are fighting for the hell of it. That this place is here for nothing more than a place to hide? This is all called Sanctuary for a reason. It is a place of safety for mutants everywhere during a time of persecution,” she said, squinting her eyes slightly as if she couldn't believe his words. “The humans are fighting for superiority, because they will use it against us in ways that they have already displayed... hell, it would only get worse. So we are fighting in order to take that away from them. They have proved that they do not deserve to have it.” |

The blue skinned woman spoke to Manuel with increasing anger, it was obvious her devotion to the cause was true. Unlike Empath, her time here had only served to make her dislike humanity even more. "Listen lady, I have an opinion, a strong one, just like you. They may not be the same, but that doesn't make either of us wrong. People come into this world hating or loving no one, whatever feelings we develop are based on how that person treats us. My hat for humans burned out, not because I think they should be praised, or because I think they are right what they do. My time spent with The Brotherhood has however, shown me the truth about its followers. Nothing but pure hate fuels them. Say what you want, tell me its because they feel oppressed, but its hate. Plain and simple." The Spaniard spoke quickly and harshly to Raven. "My hate has just burned out, I simply can't care anymore" he said in a slower voice, looking back at the water beneath his feet. The meeting with Raven had gone much like so many other meetings before it. Empath only wanted a simple conversation, but it just never went that way for him. At this point the empathic mutant didn't know where to go or who to turn to. He had lost his place in this world just when he needed a shoulder to lean on. |
