Pacing the destruction that was Murderworld with agitated steps, Jac was still talking hurriedly into her communicator as Tommy returned, eyes rimmed with red as he sped up to her. “That’s what I said, two. Don’t ask questions, alright?” she snapped and jabbed at the off button. Taking a deep breath, the speedster reached out a hand and caught hold of one of Speed’s, giving it a gentle squeeze. “I gave coordinates for a hundred miles away…If we stay here much longer, SHIELD will turn up plus I think we could do with the run.”

The blonde still couldn’t quite believe this was happening. After so many months of hiding and sneaking around, literally risking their lives for an hour or two together…Of course, they weren’t over the hard part just yet and the next hour or so, well, Jac didn’t really want to think about that. Instead she just held Tommy’s hand tightly as they ran south. Before they left however, she had taken one last, long look around at the ruins of Murderworld. For better or worse, it had been her home. She had learnt a lot there, about herself, about mutants and the world. No doubt if she had been found by Xavier’s people, she would have learnt something much different, but no one really had it right, because no one had won.

Skidding to a halt on a dark, quiet roadside, Spitfire turned to Tommy and looked up at him, their shapes barely distinguishable in the gloom. “If you’re sure…I’d understand if you turned back…” the words came out and despite them, Jac held on to his hand tighter. Moments later, a glow appeared in the lane, looking for all the word like a mirror, suspended in the air.

“That’s us. Got everything?” Jac hugged him impulsively for a brief moment, squeezing tightly before taking the lead towards their portal. “I’ll watch out for you in Sanctuary, I promise…Everything will turn out okay…”

Stepping through the portal, the young speedster felt like she had left her stomach on the other side, back in the ‘real world’ as she pulled the white haired speedster with her into the almost dreamlike place of Sanctuary. It was still so new and different to the girl, despite all the terrible things that had happened, but with Tommy there with her, surely things could not continue to be bad, things would be better, just as soon as they got past the next few hours or so, explaining things then seeing Magneto after maybe rest and some food. Things would be better…

Tommy's feet were taking him toward the future, but his mind was still stuck in the past. The letters he wrote had wracked him to his core. Even given the nature of the way he had left things with Billy, the thought of not being able to see his brother was still an unimaginable one. And Wanda, he couldn't even process what that would be like. He just hoped his words would be enough to stop them from hating him and cringed, knowing that if the shoe was on the other foot, he wouldn't be as forgiving as he hoped they might.

Jac gave orders like a pro, like she ran the show, and in her voice he heard something he had no yet before. It was a hard authoritative tone, and he knew that seeing her in this new atmosphere would provide a different layer to the woman that he had not yet come to know. There was so much to do, so much to consider. The one thing he never let his mind settle on was the idea of turning around. So, when she brought it up to him, after they had began their journey, he told her, "I'm not going anywhere. Where you are is where I want to be."

They made it to the door. The portal looked strange and Tommy hesitated before he decided to jump into it. Jac hugged him.

“I’ll watch out for you in Sanctuary, I promise…Everything will turn out okay…”

"I trust you Babe," he said, trying not to sound afraid, and followed her through the mirror.

What he saw on the other side stunned him completely. The place was brilliant, perfect.

"So," he started, near speechless. "I guess we know where all that stimulus money went."

“Hardly,” a voice answered dryly. Flanked on one side by Officer Page and one of her lieutenants, Magneto strode across the corridor of teleportation chamber two. Aside from the mutant used to generate the portal, there were only two others within the spacious chamber that normally held scores if not hundreds. The lack of people within the large room made every footfall and syllable reverberate slightly off the impressive walls.

The look in Magneto's eyes held no warmth – normal for the Master of Magnetism – but they did hold something else within their icy depths. As Erik's gaze flickered from Tommy to Spitfire, disappointment could plainly be seen in them... disappointment, and a fire that froze more than seared.

A little earlier...

“Sir,” a woman's voice broke over the speaker in Magneto's office, “Spitfire has just reported in requesting a 'port back to Sanctuary.”

Erik's eyes drifted from the police reports on his desk to the figure standing in the corner of the room waiting in silence, “Very well. Schedule a portal to be generated in teleportation bay two. Clear out all non-essential personnel and patch me through to Reverb.”

“Yes sir,” came the reply from the other end of the line before the connection broke. Silence hung in the air for several moments while Magneto studied the figure wrapped in robes, her hood hanging low enough to cover her face despite the fact that he knew her identity.

“You're positive she intends on bringing him back here if she can?” a hint of disbelief was visible on his features... enough for anyone to find if they knew what they were looking for. It spoke of how disappointing the news would be if it were confirmed. He was positive he could trust her more than most.

She inclined her head forward, “Yes, Lord Magneto. My men inform me that she is afraid of how you will react, afraid of bringing the young man here, but her feelings for him make her willing to brave the risk to herself.”

Magneto scrubbed a hand over his face from underneath his helmet... he was once again reminded of a fact that had slapped him in the face more times than he could count. He could never fully rely on anyone, no matter how loyal and dedicated they seemed to be. It didn't matter how much blood and sweat they spilled for the cause of mutantkind... they could never match his own dedication to the cause. Spitfire would not have risked bringing someone from Xavier's to Sanctuary if she were as devoted.

Straightening, the Master of Magnetism closed his eyes as he tried to dismiss that thought; she had done much to prove her loyalty, and at least deserved to be heard. Sanctuary was a haven where justice would rule, and even she deserved to plead her case... more than most.

“Sir?” Reverb's crisp voice broke out on the speaker.

There was a moment's hesitation before Magneto replied, “Meet me in front of the teleportation building, Reverb... and bring your best man.”

Without awaiting a reply, he switched the comm off, his gaze back on the other person in the room, “We shall see.”

Now...

“The funds used to start Sanctuary were gained through means which have been justified by myself and most of the denizens of our great city... and none of your concern.”

Magneto's eyes surged with silver energy, his fingers worked into fists slightly distorted on sight due to the concussive magnetic energy that was building around them. He took several steps forward, his pair of escorts staying where they were as if he'd given them a mental command.

“You are both within the confines of magnetic force fields, unable to travel more than a few feet. I suggest you explain yourselves.”

Behind the pair of youths, the portal snapped shut, its generator backing several steps away at one look from the Lord of Sanctuary.

As her feet hit the floor of the teleportation bay in Sanctuary, Jac didn’t know if she felt a lot better or even worse. It was if a huge bolt of electricity had shot up through her leg and crashed into her stomach, sending a rush of exhilaration and fear coursing through her. Tommy followed less than seconds after her and his comment sent her into a nervous set of giggles. “This is just the teleportation bay, one of them, wait til you see the…” the speedster trailer off as she realised that the bay was empty, save for three figures ahead of them, one of whom…

Before either of them could react, a familiar energy blossomed around them and the blonde knew that she wouldn’t be running anywhere any time soon. It was not the first time she had been kept in place and as much as she detested it, a crawling feeling within her stomach told her it would not be the last time. There was an expression upon Magneto’s face, one that she had rarely seen before and she felt a sour knot twist inside her stomach. She had disappointed him and would likely pay the price. Looking across at Tommy, the shame she felt started to rapidly vanish. Yes, she might have potentially jeopardised a hell of a lot bringing him to Sanctuary and she probably should have been honest about things from the beginning, but..fuck it.

Stepping forward, her face blazed with a mixture of passion and defiance. “You know what, I probably should be apologising but I won’t. I don’t feel as if I’ve done anything I should be sorry for or justify myself over! I’ve been fighting for you since I was eighteen when I was dragged to Murderworld, after Pyro tried to kill me on your orders in a case of mistake identity!” here she actually jabbed a finger at Magneto and for a moment thought she might throw up then pass out, so carried on, dropping the hand in a snap. “But I took it, I have taken my lumps and gone through bloody hell and back for this cause. I’ve killed and nearly been killed! And not just by SHIELD either!” her voice rose to a peak and she shut her mouth before she spat out 'and that includes you when you weren’t quite yourself that time…' For one thing, Jac figured that she was probably going to suffer enough for this outburst as it was, but if he was going to take it out on anyone, it wasn’t going to be Tommy, she was going to see to that.

“I love Tommy,” Jac’s voice returned, but quieter this time. “I met him when…Well, when you weren’t around that time last May. I suppose I should have told someone but I knew what would happen. My neck would be for it and his too. I didn’t want that…we didn’t ask to meet by chance that day and we didn’t ask for things to move so fast, but they did and I’m glad and you know why?” she looked at Magneto, blue eyes steady despite the fear in them. “Because what is the point of fighting for a future if you don’t keep one for yourself…”

Reaching back, she sought Tommy’s hand, wanting and needing it at that moment. It was possibly that the Master of Magnetism thought that this was some sort of teenage infatuation, but it was more than that. They were young and relatively speaking had not known each other for very long, but out of all the wide world, they both knew they would never find another soul who could understand the burning fire within them and the need to be free to run. Keeping her chin high, she allowed her words to sink in before adding “The wrong done is my fault. Don’t take it out on him, take it out on me.”

Another meeting with his grandfather apparently could only mean one thing to Tommy, another round of contained threats while being held in place by a magnetic field. He shouldn't have been shocked to see the older man there. Tommy should have guessed Magneto would know everything that went on in the strange world of Sanctuary. As always seemed to be the case, old Mags exceeded those creepy expectations by seeming to know about it even before it happened.

"Again with the magnetic field...I hope this thing doesn't cause cancer," Tommy muttered, trying to break the tension, but speaking lowly so that his grandfather might not hear.

He asked for explanation. That always seemed to be the case when the two white haired mutants met up. He would have shot out some half thought up quip meant to calm him down and deflect the tension, but Jac spoke up and he didn't get the chance.

She was forceful, angry, and a bit defiant, nothing like Tommy imagined she would be. Tommy thought she would be subserviant...wouldn't anybody be?

But this couldn't happen. Mags was fierce, dangerous. You couldn't just say whatever you wanted to somebody like that. He'd rip you apart with the flick of a finger.

"Wait! Don't, like, kill her or anything," he screamed, a bit ashamed that he was so frightened about the whole thing.

"Don't take it out on her." He squeezed her hand. "You know whatever trouble's come into your little sphere has come from me. Jac's a good soldier. She's a lot more than that, but as far as you're concerned she's top notch. But me, I'm an Xavier kid. I'm from the squeaky clean side of the tracks."

He was throwing himself under the bus for her.

"You don't think I belong here right? Well, neither do I, but I'm here...for her. And the fact that I'm willing to stand here and tell you all that, the fact that I'm willing to throw my lot in with you after all the destruction you've caused to the people who mean the most to me in the world...that should be more than enough of an explanation for you. So what do you say Grandpa, you wanna let me out of this thing and take me fishing or something ?"

Even as the words died off Tommy's lips, not a muscle of the magnokinetic's twitched. Erik simply stood there, eyes alight with nearly white fire as he observed the two young people standing before him. They had a mix of terror, anger, defiance, and uncertainty on their faces, and judging by the speed at which the blood raced through their veins, their hearts must have been pounding in their chest... he didn't think this heart rate had anything to do with their increased metabolisms.

They were young, full of life, love, and lust; these two had the world at their fingertips and likely thought themselves invincible... untouchable and that whatever they felt for each other was destined. Young romantic love. Erik could vaguely remember such a thing.

“Leave us,” Magneto suddenly barked, his voice booming around the spacious, nearly empty chamber. There was no hesitation in the retreat of his people, including Reverb and her lieutenant. Within seconds, the pair of speedsters were the only people still in the room, having no choice to stay where they were due to their confinement. The light faded from his eyes.

“You make it sound as if you've been sacrificing on my behalf, Jacqueline.” There was almost a note of weariness in his voice; he knew she had said the things she had in the heat of the moment. “That has never been what I want.”

“You were brought into the Brotherhood with no pretenses given... no secrets kept. It was an organization with one goal in mind – mutant freedom without the weight of human oppression and prejudice upon our shoulders. That is what we've been fighting for... that is what you should have been sacrificing for. Like you, I do not do the things I do out of an enjoyment of the bloodshed. I do them because no one else has the vision and the strength to take things as far as we have under my guidance. If there was, then I would not have been the one to lead our people to the paradise we enjoy now.”

His gaze turned to Tommy, surveying with almost the same look a father would give a young man who was dating his daughter. After a few moments, he turned it back to Jac, “I realize that most people even within the walls of Sanctuary fear me to one degree of the other, however I would have thought by now you would have come to realize that while respect is required, I am not some vengeful master who will strike down a humble petitioner making a simple request. While the Brotherhood are not able to lead normal lives, I will fight to give you as much as possible. This however,” he gestured toward Tommy, “is a sign of disrespect. Not only for me and my authority, but you also put the safety and well-being of the entire city in jeopardy for this boy.”

It was a difficult situation for poor Jac to be in... she could not leave Sanctuary, and he knew she was aware of that. Yet bringing Tommy here had been an equally bad idea... one he would not have approved of for personal reasons as well as professional.

“As for who is responsible, young man,” he said, his eyes turning toward his grandson, “I don't know what they teach you at that school, but here we learn to take responsibility for our own actions. Spitfire is an incredibly capable, responsible young woman with unlimited potential, and a family within Sanctuary that cares what becomes of her. She will not be killed. We do not do that here. She has done much for the Brotherhood and that will be taken into consideration when thinking on how to deal with this situation.”

The mutilated body of a teleporter crossed his mind as he had spoken of killing. The briefest of a gaze flickered toward Jac, not even quite reaching her before going back to Tommy. There had been one on-the-spot execution... far from his proudest moment.

“And you will not address me by any other name than Magneto. Is that understood.?”

The echoes of her angry words had barely died in the large hall, before Jac was really regretting saying them, thinking them even. Ohgod had she really said all that? Pale anyway, Jac went a death white shade, giving her an almost vampiric appearance and she clung to Tommy’s hand almost a little too tightly. He pitched in with his own feelings and Jac was very, very glad of it although she was equally terrified. Oh…gosh….had she seriously just yelled at Magneto?

Jac felt like she was going to puke, everywhere.

“Please…we just want to be together…” she added, her tone much quieter than before as she came back into the conversation as Tommy finished, pleading. She winced as Reverb and the others were dismissed, leaving the hall quickly so that it was just the three of them left. Her mind kept flashing up images of the corpse of that poor teleporter…oh god, that hadn’t been in this same room had it? No, no that had been bay three…this was two. It did little to ease the painful thudding of her heart within her chest which felt horribly constricted.

Her cheeks and ears burned, colour returning as he admonished her. “But that’s not…when I…” two wrong starts led her to just trail off. There had been very little choice in her joining the Brotherhood. Basically it had been them or death. Not an easy choice for anyone to make, let alone a young girl who had been separated from friends and family entirely. Any words that she wanted to say had escaped her thoughts and she stood there, pained by her own uncomfortable silence until at last she found her voice again.

“Tommy only just asked…Either way we’re damned by our actions, so we might as well be damned together.”

Jac lifted her chin, holding her head as high as she dared, although she did not even dream of looking at Magneto fully. Shuffling slightly, the blonde moved so she was stood more at Tommy’s side than in front of him now, although she was ready to step between the two again if need be.

“I wouldn’t have brought him if I didn’t trust him. No one knows he’s here on the outside…” Spitfire was tired. She was tired of fighting day in day out, with no one to turn to who could understand her fully. At this stage, it was all just going to be excuses, so it was easier to accept whatever was going to come to her. Shaking a little, Jac squeezed on to Speed’s hand. She had said her (rather angry) piece and now, what would be would be.

Things seemed to be settling down, though at this point that might have been subjective. Magneto seemed more at ease with the fact that Tommy was there, though he was far from the easiest person in the world to read.

He spoke about their goals and methods as the Brotherhood in a way that struck Tommy as curious. He was proud. No shred of guilt or shame was evident in his words. He spoke as though what they had done to the world, what he claimed to have done for his people, were accomplishments and not the acts of horror that the young speedster had been taught. That sent a sharp spike of uneasiness into his chest.

The only thing that was clear to Tommy, the one thing that Magneto made sure to leave no doubt about, was that the man had no interest in whatever sort of relationship he imagined Tommy might have conceived in his mind.

That was just fine to Tommy. The thought of sharing blood with Magneto still made him long for a transfusion, and even though he was now, for all intents and purposes, living in the Brotherhooders headquarters, the thought of actually joining them was not something he would allow to settle on his mind. He was not a foot soldier for Magneto. Stubborn pride alone would never allow that.

He thought about making things clear to his grandfather. He was here for Jac. That was all. But he reconsidered. It would doi no good and as Jac spoke, he realized his girlfriend could do more to defuse the situation than he ever could.

He squeezed her hand and gave her a small smile. Still he could not resist giving his grandfather just a piece of his mind.

"Of course," he said in reply to the man's question. "I would never seriously call you anything other than Magneto......never."

“You have chosen a difficult path, Spitfire,” he said overriding their words. “You have taken on much responsibility, and when you felt you weren't doing enough, you asked me to give you more. Well, I have. Very few are as privileged to the information you have heard outside of the Acolytes or the top staff of Sanctuary... likely more than those save Absolom.”

Jaw set, the heat that had first been in his eyes rekindled as he looked down on the pair of them, yet continued to lay the responsibility down at Jac's feet, “Do you not realize how many lives depend on the decisions many of us in the Brotherhood make? We have women, and children... innocent lives who do not wish to know bloodshed... individuals with kind hearts and souls who were guilty of nothing more than their birth. And yet you bring someone so close to the X-Men into their midst, willing to jeopardize everything for the sake of the relationship you've had with this young man.”

“Never doubt for a moment that I don't understand what you are going through, Spitfire. I am Magneto, and I realize that name has created an image that I do nothing to discredit, but I am made of flesh and blood the same as you. I have loved and lost, as have most of those among our ranks. Fighting for the lives and freedom of mutants everywhere can be a lonely life save for the fortunate few... a price I am willing to accept. If I can save you from such a life, I would gladly do so, which is the reason I have not come to you before now regarding this relationship.”

He hadn't known details, but his sources had given him enough information to know that she was seeing someone she shouldn't have. However, he trusted her enough to keep her mouth shut; this however, was something entirely different.

“We have rules and protocols for a reason, soldier, and I expect the members of my Brotherhood to carry those rules out with more zeal than anyone else... to be an example. You have failed to do so, but worse, you did not trust your superiors enough to ask them before doing something so reckless. Yes... you have done much for our cause, but you asked. If you are not willing to pay the price, then why did you ask for more responsibility? If you are not willing to trust us then why are you here?”
