September 6th, early afternoon Sprawled out on the couch in Derek's suite, Kel had just returned from a shopping trip with one of the students. She was one of the ones that was going to Utopia with him on Phoenix Flight. Just one more day. His stomach twisted as he stared up at the ceiling. He'd been trying not to think too much of it... it made him go cold. He didn't know about who else was going to be going to Utopia or who was staying in New York, for the most part. Maybe some of the names would have cheered him up a little, if some of his friends would be there. Any of them. Not that he was very good company like this. Childish, childish, he should make sure to see his other friends that wouldn't be going with him... instead of sulking that he couldn't have the one he wanted with him. Though sulking was hardly the word for it at this point. Not that long ago he'd have just slunk off to mope on his own. He couldn't do that now. Especially not now. He wanted to go find out where Derek was. Only one more day. He tore his eyes away from the ceiling and rolled off the couch, landing on his feet before making his way to the door. The first day they'd all settled in here he'd checked on some of his friends. He hesitated before going out, and finding Cessily's suite again. "Cess its me," he called after knocking. Kel shifted from one foot to the other, fidgeting while he waited for her to answer the door. If she was there. If she wasn't he was just as good off waiting where he'd been. "I.." anything else he had to say was swallowed. He might be willing to talk about things in front of Cessily. Not so much in front of anyone who might overhear. He didn't know when he'd become such a withdrawn person. It wasn't new anymore. It was still strange though. |

The flight to Utopia was tomorrow, but Cessily had not changed her mind. She wouldn’t be going. It was no judgment on those going, or the place itself – the idea of it, a safe place, tucked away into such a retreat, away from the persecution they faced in the city…It was a pleasant thought. But Cessily just couldn’t bring herself to go. A part of her wanted to, to be with her friends, her new family. The rest of her, it begged her to try and go her own way. Had she been at the school because she was afraid to be alone? She wasn’t sure. The image inducer that she had been using while out in the city was sitting on the dresser in the suite, and she was sprawled on the sofa, the quiet murmur of the television a nice distraction from her thoughts. She wasn’t even sure what was on, as she wasn’t paying very close attention, her eyes closed. A knock on the door was what woke her up from spacing out, blinking at the door for a moment until she heard Kel’s voice. Bare silver feet were silent against the plush carpeting, and despite only wearing a pair of cotton shorts and a tank top, she flung the door open. He looked fidgety, awkward, standing in the hallway looking entirely uncomfortable. She’d seen how he and Derek had been wrapped around each other at the infirmary – it hadn’t surprised her. Kel had come to see her the first day they spent in the apartments, so she already knew he was physically okay. But the look on his face made her realize that he was not handling this well. Not that she blamed him. Kel had always been so sensitive, so caring; she’d known just seeing his face in the Rahne’s classroom that he’d taken the losses hard. It wasn’t his fault. It wasn’t anyone’s fault…But she knew him well enough to know he’d still blame himself. She let him walk in, and before the door had even closed, as he trailed off into silence, Cessily had stepped forward. The redhead couldn’t think of anything to say, so she didn’t bother – stretching onto her tiptoes, she wrapped her arms around him in a tight hug, burying her face in his shoulder. Taking a deep, steadying breath, the silver girl didn’t bother saying anything just yet, just glad for the chance to hug him. When she finally did speak, she only pulled her face away enough that she wasn’t speaking directly into his chest. “…You’re leaving, aren’t you? To Utopia?” |

Once inside, he was caught in a hug. Thoughts of whether he'd be overheard died instantly, though the door was still wide open behind him. He hugged back tightly without reservation and closed his eyes. They stung with unshed tears. She didn't say anything and neither did he. There were many people he called friends over the years and meant it, but with her it was more than that. He didn't keep things from her the way he did with them, whether he thought it was for their sakes or not. It was a two way street. Trusting someone with your problems, they trusted you. If you let them help you, they might let you help them. It wasn't something he understood until they became close. Between her and Derek, he couldn't hide anything, not from them. The question came. To the problem at hand in one stoke, and the way she asked it gave him pause. "I am... you're not I take it?" he said, looking down at the top of her head. He tried not to sound upset about it. Of course he wasn't so great at that. "Derek isn't either." "I wish we knew when we'd be able to see each other. Everything's such a mess..." he trailed off, not letting go yet. Everything was a mess. It could have been so much worse. But it was more than bad enough. At least they would be seeing each other again. Picking things up again was never easy. This was just so much worse than when it was just him hurt. It wasn't about him. Everyone had been hit hard enough to break. They were holding together, but only just. He sighed. "I just don't know what I'm doing... but, Cess, I have to do something. I can't just sit around and let everyone else handle things." Like always. "Might as well go look after the kids while all the badasses stay and fix things here." |

For all that Cessily had plenty of people she counted as friends, there weren’t nearly as many that could be counted among those she trusted with her secrets. When it came right down to it, Cessily was not as trusting as she seemed. There were very few people she trusted with certain secrets about herself – Kel was one of the few. He knew about her self-sustainability, about the fact that she didn’t need to eat, or breathe, or sleep. Kel was easily one of her closest friends, and she couldn’t count the times they’d just hung out at night, watching movies, not needing the sleep that was so essential to everyone else. He hugged her back, and she took comfort in the feeling of his arms around her. They didn’t even need to say anything at first. She knew instantly that he was close to tears, just from how tight he gripped her. Cess kept her body stretched a bit taller, so he wouldn’t have to stoop quite as much to stay in the hug. With her eyes closed, she felt as he shifted, looking down at her, his answer what she expected. Hearing the troubled tone, she squeezed him gently, and tilted her head back to glance up at him for a moment. Her gaze quickly skittered away, leaning her cheek against his chest. “No…I’m not.” Cessily’s voice was soft, and she didn’t say anything about Derek. She wasn’t surprised; Derek didn’t seem like the kind of guy who could just retreat to safety. Keeping her arms around him, unwilling to let go, and give up the warmth of his embrace; he trailed off, and she frowned, pulling back just enough to tilt her head up to see him. “Hey, it’s not like we’re never gonna see each other again. We’ll both be back,” For a moment, she ducked her head again, pressing her cheek against his shoulder again. His sigh caused her to pull back from him a bit further. Not enough for her to pull out of the hug, but enough that she could look up at him, her silver face serious, the usually smiling girl somber. He was so uncertain, and the mention of bad asses caused her to shake her head slightly, a hint of a smile playing at her lips. “You’re plenty bad ass…But you need to go where you feel most comfortable. They’ll be needing help in Utopia, setting up the base, taking care of everyone. There are still injured.” Her hand, resting on one of his shoulders, gave a squeeze. “Helping there is just as important as being here. Probably more so, because there’s only so much we can do here, with SHIELD investigating.” |

So she wasn't going to be there either. He wasn't happy about it though he'd suspected it already... but he wasn't going to complain. Everyone had to make their own choices and live with them. He wasn't selfish enough to make it about him. Being without the people you cared about was difficult. Sometimes it had to happen though, and he wasn't going to make it any harder. Kel only nodded at what she said, at first. It made sense. It was why he had decided to go in the first place. It didn't mean he had to like it. He was glad she didn't think he was hiding or anything though. That's really how it felt after all, he wouldn't be surprised if some of the people who weren't going to Utopia saw it that way. "The thing is... I don't want to go. But its where I'll be needed most, so that's where I'm going," he finally said with the ghost of a smile. "I suppose it would have been easier if I had gone in the first trip, so I didn't have to think about it so damn much. I'm glad I didn't though..." That, he didn't explain. He probably didn't have to either. She got him. It made it harder to leave, but he would have been a mess if he hadn't spent the last week with Derek. He probably still was anyway, but he was holding up. He gave her another squeeze and let her go. "I'm going to miss this. You're right though. Its only for a while. We'll be seeing each other again before too long." Not being able to say when was the problem. It made him feel panicky in a way he couldn't quite describe. He was all to used to people going away for 'a while' and never seeing them again. This was different though. He believed that. Or at least believed that she did. |

The opening doors of the elevator announced Derek's arrival. It had been another fun day of salvaging through the wreckage for anything that could have been saved before they called in the cleanup crew to remove the rubble. Fun times. The good news was that he'd managed to find one of his own things in the rubble that he now had neatly folded and tucked under his arm, carrying a tray with two drinks in one hand and a large paper bag in the other. He was on his way to his own room that he'd been sharing with Kel when he saw the open door. It was Cess's room. It wasn't that he particularly cared. Everyone was friends here in the building. But as for Cess, the two of them had... an argument the other day. On the plus side, she was one of the only people in the entire institute who'd even bothered to try and understand how he felt about what he was beginning to refer to as "The Havok Issue". Although it got heated, they'd at least managed to end on a civil note, so he hoped. It seemed to be that way as he walked past and the metal girl waved him in. Kel was there, too. He felt a bit rude, since he'd only bought food for two on the way back. "Oh, sorry, Cess." he remarked as he put the bag on the side-table by the door, cradling the folded, ash covered jacket over his arm. "Didn't know you were gonna be around... I'da gotta ya somethin', too." He put the jacket in the chair as he sifted through the bag, pulling out a burger. His. "What've you guys been up to, today? Daytime TV drivin' you crazy yet?" He said with his usual smile, hoping to keep it from getting awkward. "I got yer usual..." he mumbled to Kel as he set the tray down. "They forgot to put the fucking ketchup in there again, but the place was really fuckin swamped, so..." |

Cessily understood Kel’s feelings, of not wanting to go to Utopia. She knew it wasn’t going into hiding, but that didn’t mean it didn’t feel that way. Her comfort was knowing that they’d be back – but the part of her that questioned it didn’t want to go. He was right, though, that he’d be needed more in Utopia than here. He was a face most people knew, from the youngest kids, to the teachers. He was patient, and would be able to help with so many things in the new facility; it didn’t make it any easier, knowing she wouldn’t see him for a while. Smiling a bit at his words, she nodded – she was glad he’d stayed, at least for the week. “They’ll need you there.” She echoed quietly, because it still hurt knowing he was leaving. But it was for the best. She had no intention of staying in this city that hated her, not for very long at least. A few weeks, at the most. Squeezing him again as they let go of the hug, stepping back for a moment, before reaching out to pop him on the shoulder with her fist, lightly, at his seeming uncertainty. “Don’t you make that face at me – I promise we’ll see each other again. You won’t be rid of me that easily.” Her grin was more confident than she felt, but that was more because she was unsure how long it would be. As far as Cessily was concerned, there was no way they’d never see each other again. Glancing over his shoulder at the still-open door, she blinked when she saw Derek peek in, looking wholly uncomfortable. Waving him in with a smile when she saw him, she walked over to close the door behind him, shaking her head at the offer of food. “No problem, I ate earlier.” A lie, of course, but one that only Kel would really notice, or know the reason for. She’d had a rather intense heart-to-heart with Derek the other day, about the situation with Havok. He’d been noticeably upset, and Cess had done her best to understand what he felt, while still trying to help him understand how the rest of them felt. It’d ended on a rather positive note, she thought, and was glad when he didn’t hesitate to join them. Moving over to the couch, she motioned for the two of them to have a seat, and eat. A single shoulder shrugged at the question of what they’d been up to. “Today? Nothing, really. Staring into space. I watched a movie earlier.” Really, there wasn’t a whole lot that she could do. |

"Good..." Her confidence was reassuring. Nothing seemed certain now. At least their friendship was. "Is this one better?" Kel asked before making a face while sticking his tongue at her. Though he still felt uneasy about going to the savage land without his nearest and dearest, it wasn't the end of the world. He had come over to enjoy what time they had left before he left, not mope over his decision. Before he could think of anything else to say, or do, his friend smiled and waved at someone behind him. He glanced behind him automatically, a casual greeting ready and immediately tangled on his tongue when he saw who it was. Ooh he brought food. Never a bad idea, for him. "Ah, doesn't matter," he said about the ketchup, smiling at him. Come to think of it, he hadn't had lunch yet. He didn't so much as blink at Cess' little lie. Some things were personal, and if she didn't want everyone to know that was her choice... Something he had to respect. Anyway it wasn't as if he let everyone know that he didn't seem to need to sleep. Well, not often. "Thanks, Der," he said, giving him a kiss on the cheek on the way to snag his burger and drink. He hadn't even realized that he was starting to get hungry. "Oh not much really. I went shopping with one of the students. Sarah... Vale I think," he said after a moment trying to remember her last name. In that Cessily was right. He was a familiar face for most of Xaviers', because he'd spent quite an effort making sure of just that. That he knew everyone, at least a little. "We got stuff to take to.." the Savage Land. They called it Utopia but it was still in his head as the Savage Land and he wasn't sure if that was going to change. But then again that just made it seem that much more ominous said aloud. So, instead he finished "..on Phoenix Flight." Bleh. He sat down beside Cessily, focusing on his food for a few moments. Half because he actually was hungry, and half because he was annoyed that despite his resolve it was really bugging him that tomorrow was the day. A week had seemed much longer, now it seemed very short a time. |

Derek knew that Kel was almost perpetually hungry. Since his body was constantly regenerating, that meant he always needed some kind of fuel, as Derek understood it. Over the past week, he'd become a source of focus for the battered street rat. They never did get their official "First Date", but he didn't care. Everything had come crashing down about their ears, and it had been going bad for Derek long before that. And with the school now nothing more than a pile of rubble, he could only imagine how it must have felt for Kel, for everyone else who'd been there so much longer than him. And he gave him something else to focus on other than his own rage at all of it. The rage at the zealots who swarmed on them, ready to kick and kill them while they were down, his contempt at the people who hid the truth from him, his anger at his "team-mates" who chastised him over his reaction to the big bad revelation and his own frustration at not being able to do anything more than just wait for more news. Kel had become his anchor. The kiss on the cheek was enough of a reward for him. A sign that maybe all of this would even out eventually, and things would get back to as normal as guys like them could hope for. Maybe then... he thought. Maybe then we could try and be a regular couple... It was a foolish hope, but it was hope. "Hmn?" He snapped out of his daze long enough to hear Kel and Cess's responses and smiled. "Yeaaaaaaah... ya know what...?" he grinned. "Let's get out of here." He go to his feet. "I mean, it's almost five, we're back in NY, and we got one night left. If that's all we got, I say we make the most of it and try to enjoy it." he smirked at both of them before his face fell a bit. Tomorrow was the day. From there, Kel went to Utopia, and Cess to Sanctuary. He wasn't about to beat either of them over the head with the reasoning behind it, but for now... "It's gotta be better than sitting around here moping, right?" |

Cessily knew Kel well enough to know that he’d worry himself to death if not reassured that things would be okay. She could guarantee nothing about life, or their home, but she could promise him that their friendship wouldn’t die. The redhead had to make him believe that, because the last thing he needed to be while living in a jungle filled with dinosaurs was distracted. And it wasn’t a lie, because she fully believed it. The face he made caused her to grin and giggle, nodding. “Much better, yes,” She assured him with a smile, before inviting Derek into the room. As the two of them opened the bags, pulling out burgers that smelled delicious even to her unusual senses, she stepped over to close the door. Giving the two of them a moment before she popped back over, sprawling onto the couch comfortably. She didn’t bother saying anything about ketchup, staring off into space for a moment until Derek stood up. Looking at him curiously as he spoke, before her brows drew into a bit of a frown, lifting one hand to rake her hair out of her face uncomfortably. “Uh…Well, you guys are welcome to go out but…I kinda can’t.” Shifting in place, she glanced pointedly down at her silver legs, crossing them as she sat on the couch. One of her arms stretched out extra long, stealing a French fry out of Kel’s bag with a sneaky smile, popping it into her mouth and savoring the salty potato-ness. “I’ve been warned that my appearance in the city will be unwelcome during the current crises.” Her tone was calm and even, even somewhat sardonic as she spoke, although a ripple of silver across her otherwise smooth skin belied her calm. “Even with a holowatch, I am not supposed to risk it.” It wasn’t a comfortable thought, but she understood the reason. The last thing she needed was to have her watch break in public and cause a panic. There was enough hatred going around without her adding into the fear. |

When Derek suggested that they head out, Kel had a mouthful of food. He wanted to go. Get out of here and pretend for a while. Enjoy himself for one more day. Before he could speak without the risk of choking on it - considering the amount he'd had in his mouth it was very likely to happen if he'd tried - Cessily said she couldn't come. He swallowed his disappointment (and his food) and flashed a smile at her as she snagged a fry. It slowly faded when she explained the why. He hadn't even known that she hadn't been allowed out. It left a bad taste in his mouth. Despite the reasoning... or maybe because of it. "Oh..." he said once he could speak. There was a question what they should do if they didn't go out - and if they did, if Cessily would be fine with it. Only, there was something that came to mind that he couldn't ignore. Or rather, someone. He still hadn't been able to contact his sister. He hadn't been able to for quite a while now, since well before the attack. How would the Morlocks be doing in a time like this? He didn't think she could get hurt, but until he could talk to her he was going to worry. "You think Luce is okay out there?" he asked her quietly. He really ought to ask if anyone had heard from the Morlocks. Even though he wasn't sure he wanted to hear what might have happened. She was like Cessily. Mercury and Plastic. She wouldn't be hurt... but she was his little sister and the world was getting to be an ugly place for mutants. It was too much to hope for that she and her friends would get through all this without any trouble. Usually he'd be able to contact them through X-Corps if he couldn't get a hold of her. Too bad that wasn't an option now, with Mutant Town cut off from the rest of the world. Although he was inwardly fretting, he forced himself to physically relax. She could take care of herself. To Derek he added, "You haven't met her. Luce is my younger sister. She's nineteen... she's been staying with the Morlocks for the past year or so." There was so much else he could say about her. He wished he'd thought to introduce them before. He thought they'd get along really well. There would be a chance to do so later. Of course there would be. "She's a tough girl. I should worry more about anyone who upsets her. Not feeling it though. If they do they get whats coming to them." It was intended as a joke. He meant it though and had said it with more force than he'd meant to. |

Derek's brow furrowed as he listened to Cess's explanation. He really felt bad about it. He didn't really need an image inducer, it was more or less a cosmetic thing he used when he got sick of looking at how beat-up he appeared. When people on the streets generally saw him, the reactions of fear and disgust were probably related more to the fact that he looked like a thug. A guy who picked fights with anyone who dared to even look at him wrong. There was a time when he actually enjoyed it, milking it with a pointed grin at the people staring at him with a flash of his tongue. And he had nothing to worry about. Other than the bruising which he never felt, anyway, he was confident there was nothing a riot could pull out that would hurt him. But the thing he realized now was that for people like Cess, it wasn't so easily dismissed as being just "a degenerate of society". Her mutation by it's very nature made her not only stand out as "different", but also "mutant". And in a city like this, a crowd could switch to "riot mode" really quick. "Ah, shit, Cess, I'm sorry..." he tried to apologize. "Guess I'm really strikin' out, here..." Kel spoke up, then, mentioning that he had a sister, which was amazingly, news to him. There were still a lot of things he didn't know about him. He made it a point not to pry. Whatever Kel felt comfortable with telling him was good enough for him, mostly because he knew that sort of prying would invoke the same level of interrogation from the regen's part, which although he wasn't really trying to hide from him, he wasn't all-to-thrilled to go into detail about, either. This "Luce" he described sounded like a badass. But then again... the "Brother" sense was something he was well acquainted with. "Sounds like Dani..." he chuckled as he finished his burger. "I have a sister, too. She was the one who really raised me." He smiled, a slight hint of bitterness to it as he remembered those long-past events. "She's a nurse, now. Three kids. One of 'em's been shutting things on and off, lately... She will kick your ass, human or mutant if you mess with her." Meeting the family? Wow... It was a surprising offer. He folded his arms as a slight tingle spread across them. Kel liked him that much, huh? His mouth twisted in various expressions of pride and embarrassment. "Well, so long as ya tell her I look like hammered shit twenty-four seven. Hate to show up with her expecting a "decent man". He winked. "I'm sure she's fine." he smiled as he slipped his arms around the blonde's waist. "If she's anything like you, she'll kick ass, take names, and post the stupid shit they did for everyone to see." He brushed a trace of loose hair away from his face before remembering they weren't alone. He cleared his throat. "Well, if you can't go out..." he looked up at Cess. "We can always do what me and my friends back in M-Town did... I'll go get a bottle of rum, for you-" He glanced back to Kel with a smirk. "I'll get you your own bottle, and we can camp out on the roof and listen to music and watch the sky..." He shrugged a bit. "Sounds boring, but I've also got a laptop full o' music, so we can just... ya know..." He scratched the back of his head. He didn't know an easy way to say it. "I just wanna hang with you guys before you go..." |
