Pawn to Queen Eight; HFC Black Court plot proposal

So, this helpful summary mentions in passing that "In some instances however, a King or Queen has been appointed in a sort of power play. In these cases the weak did not last very long."

I'm thinking something like that might be fun to play out... that is, an outsider NPC gets brought in as a Black Queen and the Black Court gets involved in internecine struggles, which distracts the Court to its detriment. Eventually the real purpose behind her coronation is revealed and she is booted out.

There are obviously more detailed questions to be answered, but working out details is only worthwhile if there's interest in the general idea. So if you're interested in participating in something like this, assuming the details are worked out to your satisfaction, respond here? If enough of the Black Court is interested, I'll move it forward from there. (Folks outside the Black Court can be involved too, but if the BC isn't interested this won't really work.)

Regan, of course, is interested.

I might be interested, depending on when it occurs and if Jay is part of the HFC by then. He will be a Black Pawn when he joins, so he would be part of the Black Court. I just would need to hear more about the plot and everything. Plus in character it would probably be a good crash course for Jay in the ways of the Inner Circle.

I don't mean any disrespect when I say this, but I don't like the idea. I don't think it is a secret that Sage is making a move for the position, and I've spent some time building her in that direction. Also, I think that inserting an NPC Queen only to have her booted out would make the Black Court look stupid, instead of choosing an active PC player to fill the spot.

That said, I don't really have a say in the matter. Sage isn't in the Black Court and I am not a mod. So it is up to Max and what he wants to do. So Sage will deal with it, and I will work with it, however it is played out. :)

What if those two ideas are combined though, Sage? If the idea was that this is the final test for Sage, to see if she can effectively eliminate competition (without resorting to cold and easily traceable murder) of course, then a temp-Queen, set up as some sort of sacrificial lamb, might be crowned.

Unrelatedly: if the OOC plan is for Tessa to be crowned Black Queen, can somebody let me know? I'm fine with it -- while Regan wants the job, I don't especially want Regan to have it -- but I will make different narrative plans for Regan if the job is going to stay open than if the job is taken.

I personally think it would be far more interesting plot within the Club if you have multiple people competition for the spot of Black Queen between PC's and NPC's, with an organization like the the Hellfire Club it would just make more sense to have such a competition especially if the women are using their own individual talents that would make them a good Queen of the Black Court. Let it build up over time as competition unfolds rather than just ushering one person into the spot without much conflict about it.

It could be organized as to whom eventually shall fill the spot, however I would think the plot would be far more interesting if each woman is trying to undermine the rest or gain support and power to take the position.

The position of Black Queen is still up for grabs, for anyone.

Sage has made no secret that she's ambitious but to be Black Queen she'd need to be at least Rook and at some point switch over to Black Court. So, even though Sage wants it, she'll need to do some maneuvering and that'll take time.

Personally, I'd like to see the rivalry between Sage and Mastermind swing into high-gear. Either of them could hamstring or bump off NPC rivals to show how ambitious they both are and eventually concentrate on each other - possibly have threads setting up alliances or trying to sway others (in both courts) to help each with their cause, or contracting outside characters to help hamstring their rival. Enlisting Max's trusted knight or going an even more circuitous route of using Shatterstar to get to Longshot, are also options.

There are a lot of options which could unfold naturally in the course of their rivalry.

I must admit that the possibility of Storm briefly being Black Queen to shake things up a bit would be interesting (though considering that there may be an attack on her life *eyes Sage* if that happened, which would strain their relations with the X-Men), or also maybe Callisto, which I have to admit I mostly find appealing for the inevitable scene of Calli smirking at Betsy, a half-smoked cheap cig dangling from her lips.

I'm not dismissing the idea out of hand if an awesome plot could be created for it, but I think, for the moment, we should concentrate on building up the real rivalries before adding in complications from a temporary Black Queen.

I agree with Kim mostly on all she's said. I've personally not said anything yet as I'm not Black Court, but plots of this nature do have wider impacts and that could effect White.

I think we should concentrate on the Black Queen spot from a player character angle rather than worry about NPCs as without a solid grounding it could be potentially messy and overcomplicate things.

We've not had a Black Queen for nearly two years now and frankly, we do need one to help bolster plots. I have been talking with Steve and I have no issue with Sage switching over Courts if Sage is to be promoted Queen - mainly because in the event she doesn't, then that'd leave the White side of the fence very empty.

Also the conflict does not entirely have to come from the run up to whoever is going to be made Queen. Conflict can occur afterwards as well - and I'm talking from a PC standpoint here, as Betsy was made White Queen without any real trial by fire, battling off other women contests. Instead she had to prove her worth and slog it out. If anything, that can be a little harder as you're in a position of authority yet you have to justify it to everyone else.

I don't think the concept of a temporary Queen is necessarily a bad one, just currently prhaps not the best device we could use. To echo Kim, it would be much better if actual rivalries could be built up as it would benefit player characters, including ones not even after the crown, much more.
