September 19th, early afternoon

Just a few days back, Melody had returned from her Kentucky home with her siblings. It was strange for her at the Worthington Complex- and she did think of it in capital letters. Strange might as well be capitalized as well. The other students were already over in Utopia, it was just X-Men fixing things at the mansion and working with people to make things okay again.

So basically she felt more than a little out of sorts waiting around for whenever it was she was supposed to be sent over to join them in that strange wild place. She didn't go out unless someone was with her, though she didn't admit she was a bit scared to since those people were still out there.

Sometimes she went down to get coffee or a snack for the adults around the complex. Most of the time she just curled up - like she was now - on a couch with a borrowed book. She couldn't focus on the words in front of her though. At home there had been so many distractions, and she was sure there would be many at a place as strange as Utopia sounded. Here, she was left to stew in her thoughts. Just what she didn't want to do.

Finally she dropped the book on the cushion beside her and draped over the arm of the chair. There was no point, she'd read the same line a half dozen times. She had to do something or she was going to scream. Flying was obviously out, here, let alone anywhere she could get to. She wasn't sure if there were any movies or games around or who to ask about that stuff. Anyway it'd probably have the same effect as reading in the mood she was in. Maybe someone needed help with something? Melody stood up and left her room, slowly making her way down a few floors before realizing she wasn't sure what she was looking for, who she was looking for. She didn't even know for sure who was around, besides probably Mr. Worthington himself.

"Dobryĭ denʹ, Tovarischa Melody. You seem a little lost."

Piotr had begun to get used to the Complex, something that truly shocked him whenever he first noticed it. He was still going out every night, sure, but more often he was coming in earlier and earlier. He'd even been in his room before the sun had risen a week ago. Pete felt that this was a sign that he was slipping into a sense of lethargy and decided to do what any person who rarely spent their money outside of the occasional hamburger and beverage and realized they needed a project to keep them from getting lazy did. He went out and bought him something to build. In this case it was a car.

More specifically, the same car he'd previously owned, well, before it had been blown up along with the mansion. this one was a junker in it's current state, but Piotr had had it for a week now and it was turning out to be a thing of beauty, if it was coming along slowly, that was ok. He didn't worry about what he was going to do with it when the time came for him to finally go to Utopia. He'd already worried about it, and had come up with the plan to store his progress in a storage unit until the time when he returned to finish it. Perfect plan in the eyes of the giant metal Russian. What else would he do? Try and get it to utopia where there were no roads to drive it on? Laughable.

As it was, Piotr set his large backpack on the couch in his room and retrieved the two parts he'd be putting on the engine block out of the bag. This was the last two parts on the engine he could do before everything else required the chasis, which itself was coming out nice. Today he'd test the engine using the equipment in the garage readily available, and see if there was any fine tuning he needed to do.

So stepping out of his room, Piotr headed for the elevator to ride to the garage. He stopped for a second as he noticed one of the Guthries walking around as if she was confused or something. This one he knew better than the others, not counting Jay whom Pete seemed to see a lot of before he'd left them all. Granted, that didn't mean that he and she were the greatest of friends, he simply remembered her name without having to think about it for a couple of minutes.

"Dobryĭ denʹ, Tovarischa Melody. You seem a little lost." He said as he walked a little closer, the parts in his arms momentarily forgotten.

"Ah... hi Piotr," Melody said, looking startled when she saw Colossus. She wasn't sure what he'd said in Russian, but the rest she got. "I'm not lost. At least, I can find my way back to my room from here," she said with a half shrug. He may have meant it a different way but the sixteen year old took it literally. She just didn't know what to do. She didn't know how to put it. Saying she was fine and leaving it at that he would go on with whatever he was doing and she'd be back where she started though.

"What are you doin'?" she asked, gesturing at the machine parts in his arms. She thought that they might be car parts but she really couldn't be sure. She hadn't exactly had much to do with cars, now farm equipment she'd learned a bit about.

"Ah mean. Want a hand?" she asked, her voice a little too hopeful. She was a major bookworm. Mechanics weren't on her list of interest. But it was better than hanging around going slowly bonkers. Not to mention, Pete was nice. He'd be good company.

"Not really great with stuff like that. But Ah could bring sandwiches and stuff." What she said sunk in and she grimaced. Way to sound like a crappy social norm, Melody, she thought belatedly. Ah well, old habits die hard. Or whatever. If he was working on things some snacks and drinks should be welcome.

"Haha.. it means 'good afternoon, friend', Melody. Which I guess I shouldn't expect anyone to know. It's not... wasn't a language that was being taught at Xavier's, and the only time people hear me speaking it, i'm either saying hi or cursing some inanimate object that won't cooperate with me... Sorry, I'm rambling." He said as he started to walk down the hall again. "Well, I guess if you're not lost, I'll leave you to your devices then. Nice to get to see you this morning though, Melody."

"What are you doin'? Ah mean. Want a hand?" she asked. Her voice was a little too hopeful for how Piotr had viewed her. She didn't really look like all that much of a gear head to him. She seemed more like the person who would be able to quote literature perfectly in a moment's notice, which wasn't bad. Piotr liked books too. He just felt a love for this particular car, which had turned him into a ammature mechanic.

"I'm just fixing my car, you know, so that I don't have to keep asking Warren for suitable transportation, is all, and Yes I'd love to be blessed with your company, heh heh." He continued walking, his mood lightened even more for the fact that he would have a friend to hang out with, in addition to it being a nice afternoon.

"Sandwiches? Melody, I couldn't ask you to do that for me ,Tovarischa. Besides, I've got it where my dinner is going to be sent down here to me anyways. But I will gladly accept your help and your company."

He pressed the elevator button with his elbow, and stepped inside when the doors opened. As they rode downward, toward the garage, Pete looked down at his Guthrie friend. "Melody, I must ask, how much do you know about cars? It's not a big deal, I was just wondering is all."

"Oh not too much. Ah haven't really had much to do with 'em, haven't got my permit yet.." she admitted without reservation. He'd find out soon enough if she said anything other than the truth. Not that she was given to telling lies unless she felt she had to. "Ah know some tools though so Ah could- hand you stuff you need or somethin'."

The farm equipment, she had a passing aquaintenceship with, but that hadn't been much her area either. There were enough kids at the farm that she could focus on other things, since she wasn't really mechanically inclined. School and, for a while before she left for Xavier's, work was her thing. She wanted to do something with her life outside their little community, because she had been sure even then that she wouldn't get anywhere if she lived her life there.

Knowing how to fix a car wouldn't change her life terribly much, but it wouldn't hurt. Especially if it meant her day wouldn't seem to stretch on forever. Maybe once she started learning to drive she'd be a little more interested in cars. Right now she just wanted someone to pass the time with, and learning something new with a friend- or friend of her brothers- would do just fine.

If she had anything to do with it she'd come out of this and be able to say that she knew at least something about cars. And maybe a few more words in Russian if Piotr was inclined to sharing. It wasn't a language she'd had a chance to learn, and while she hadn't been too interested in learning foreign languages, she hadn't had a reason to be. Until now she hadn't realized why she might want to.

"Not too much?" Piotr's face turned mischievous suddenly. <Then that will make this day all the more interesting.> He said in Russian. "I mean, um, that is ok, you'll probably learn a little bit from me, although probably not a lot, seeing as I'm almost done on the engine."

The elevator doors opened, and Piotr stepped into the garage, where hung an engine block and a car that looked worse for the wear. There were dents and scratched paint, and the trunk door wasn't even attached to the chassis. The interior was better, but not by much. The upholstery, where it existed, was torn open, and Piotr had a small tarp over the driver's seat to protect the only intact seat in the car.

To Piotr, it was beautiful. Not as it was now, but as he knew it was going to be when he was finished. Everything under the car was finished, and soon the engine would be too. Then he could work on the visual aesthetic. He had simply gotten the hard stuff out of the way first.

"Melody, would you mind getting me a fourteen millimeter socket, a five-eighths wrench, and a phillips head screwdriver off that bench there?" he said, nodding to the bench as he walked to where the engine hung from a chain. Today he'd be able to attach it to the car and give the engine a test run. Well, that had been the original plan. Not he had a sense of mischief in him, and he bet that it would be more fun to get her to try it out. Best case scenario? He finds out she's a natural born driver. Worst case? He ends up having to replace parts he already has to replace. It's a win-win situation in his opinion.

Popping the boxes on the parts he had carried in, he placed them on a small rolling bench and got ready to work. He turned his head towards Melody, and smiled. "Today we're gonna finish this block and put her on the road to see how good she looks."
