It had only been about 3 short weeks since the disastrous events that happened at the Xavier School and the ensuing battle with the Purifiers on the front lawn. Three options were laid out, Travel with the X-Men to the secret Utopia Base in the Savage Land. Stay in New York City to help with the clean up and rebuilding of Xavier's dream from one of Warren Worthington's Penthouse's. Or the more controversial choice, Join Magneto in his under water Sanctuary for the time being. Of course Emma being a Frost took the more controversial path.

Emma had only intended on staying in the Sanctuary for a rather short amount of time. She would admit to being very curious about Magneto's City and wanted to see it even before the tragic events of September 1st. However once she arrived before she even had a chance to pass through Magneto's security he informed her he wished to have a meeting with her as soon as possible, Where he went on to ask her to make her stay at Sanctuary a more permanent thing. Offering her a lucrative job as Headmistress of a new school Magneto was in the process of building.

However, Emma couldn't help but to be plagued by her conscience. Which begged her to reach out to the X-Men namely Scott Summers and explain her actions and hope to smooth things over with him. Shortly after her arrival at the Sanctuary she had written him a rather lengthy letter which was never sent. She preferred to do things in person and when she heard of Scott's arrival back in New York City for his Brother's trial, She had reached out and asked that Scott speak with her. Arranging a meeting near Warren's building complex.

Emma had arrived early wanting to get through the Sanctuary security quickly enough to beat Scott to the little coffee shop. Emma took a table near the big plate glass window and awaited the arrival of Mister Summers himself. While she waited her mind processed only two scenarios. One being she leaves on good terms with mutual respect between each other. The other a series of hasty comments and words they would come to regret. Emma couldn't help but believe the latter would be more likely to occur.

When the note came from Emma to meet him in midtown, Scott discussed it with his wife first. Jean had no love for the other woman, and had never been shy to say so. The feeling, of course, was mutual and Emma had delivered her own fair share of catty comments, placing Scott in a delicate position. He wasn't happy to be put there, but he, perhaps foolishly, believed he had the ability to juggle both of the strong personalities that these women possessed. So, after the trial was over for the day, Scott dropped Jean off at Worthington's complex where they were staying, and he had headed to the coffee shop where he was going to meet Emma.

Spotting the woman at her seat, Scott beelined to her, and slid into the booth. Outwardly, they looked like any other man and woman. Yes, Emma was stunning and was dressed in her customary white on white motif, and yes, Scott's eyes were hidden beneath red lenses, unnecessary in the dark of the autumn night, but not so unusual that it would draw attention.

"Emma," Scott greeted, not offering his hand, because that was not the relationship that the two had. He hadn't bothered to change out of the suit he wore to the courthouse, though he had abandoned the tie. His dark suit was well fitting but clearly off the rack. All the expensive clothes that Ruby had filled his wardrobe with had been lost in the explosion. He nodded at the menu on the wall, and said, "Can I get you something?"

He himself wasn't a fan of coffee or hot beverages in general, but on a chilly night like this, something warm might hit the spot.

Settling into the booth, Scott had an idle thought that none of the humans who milled around them knew that two extremely powerful mutants were in their midst. If any one of these native New Yorkers, and Tourists from around the world, were believers in the Purification of the world, this could easily become a blood bath.

Emma's wait was a short one as the ever punctual Scott Summers showed up right on time and offered a friendly handshake to which Emma obliqued with a smile. “Ever the gentlemen, Scott. Hope all is well with everyone?” Emma asked ambiguously. Scott undoubtedly had the world on his shoulders looking out for the safety and well being of the entire School scattered around the world as well as having his brother on trial for his life. Scott then asked Emma if he could get her something. “I suppose, To keep up appearance we should do more than chat in a coffee house.”

Emma paused briefly before telling Scott what she would like “A White Chocolate Mocha would be divine.” After telling Scott that she then repositioned herself in the seat sitting a little more up right. “I'm sure my hasty exit on that day caused some waves? I'm sorry if my actions had any blow back effect on you.” Emma cleared her throat and looked down at the table before moving her eyes back up to lock onto the red glasses Scott wore. “You look very dapper tonight Scott. How is the trial going? Mister Murdock is a good attorney, I am sure he'll go all out in the defense of Alex.”

Emma than cast her gaze outside the big window in the coffee shop. As she looked out into the busy streets of New York City. Wondering how long the small talk could last with Scott. He was a very direct and to the point kind of man and Emma could only guess he would not tolerate her staling to get to the heart of the matter for too long. A lot has happened over the past two months in both of their lives. And even more has changed for the both of them.

Placing Emma's order as well as his own, a simple black coffee without sugar or cream, or any other fripperies. If he had to have coffee, it was not going to be some candy flavored drink that had to be drunk through a straw. Scott thought men drinking out of straws looked odd, so even when he went to a burger place, he shunned them. A strange quirk perhaps, but it was who he was. Emma chattered about the trial and his appearance, anything but the topic, which she quickly slid over like it was on the same level with the comments about his suit.

"Frankly, Emma, we've been more concerned with setting up our... winter home more than wonder about your motivations," Scott said, as he set their drinks down, and passing hers across the table to her. "I trust your transition went well."

He still had no idea where Sanctuary was, though from what information he gotten from Quicksilver and Gambit, it was a fully functioning city, location unknown. He hadn't had Jean use Cerebro to search for it. It was likely hidden from telepathic view, which could possibly leave a psychic blank spot for her to find, but then, it was just as probable that Magneto had telepathic reflectors of a sort to disguise its location. Scott didn't know and really didn't care. As far as he understood, the Brotherhood may have built Sanctuary but they did not run it as a terrorist training camp.

He leaned back in his chair, ignoring the change of conversation, anything she needed to know about the trial she could watch on tv.

"I outed the school," he told her, "I revealed our existence as a mutant school, and the attack by the Purifiers. We came to that decision, and I decided it was time to place a human face on our plight."

With the orders placed. Scott told Emma the rest of the X-Men had more important things on their minds then the absence of Emma. Scott only got a small almost inaudible chuckle out of that as he asked if her transition went well. “Went well? You could say that. Surprising would be more appropriate. As soon as we arrived, Magneto gave a little speech. And asked for me to come to his office as soon as I was ready. We had a very nice talk.” Emma left the rest of the contents of the conversion with Magento untold for the moment.

As Scott admitted he outed the school. Had it been any other world or time they were living in Emma might have been shocked, Her Jaw might have hit the table but unfortunately times have changed and very little actually shocked Emma at this point. “A bold choice. But I think we all knew it was coming to that sooner or later. If the Pur..” Emma cut herself off and spoke in a lower tone of voice. “If the Purifiers knew, It was only a matter of time before they split the beans themselves. You just preempted their attack.”

With everything else the Purifiers had gotten their noses in it seemed only reasonable they would stop at nothing to out as many mutants and organizations as they could. They obviously had supporters in high places including SHEILD. “But never the less.” Emma trailed off on the topic as she set up for a change of pace. “Scott. Before this goes on any further... I just wanted to say I am sorry.” Emma paused again before speaking. “You put yourself out there the last time I walked out on the X-Men and I told you I would never do it again. Old habits.” Another small chuckle.

“When I left with Magneto it was a rash decision in the heat of the moment you could say. I was upset, I was disgruntled. And felt as if my absence from the X-Men would be more beneficial to you and the rest of the team than my presence at this time. So I made the unpopular decision and left with Magneto.” A small sigh followed “Beautiful city though, One day you and Jean really should drop by... Once you get past the Brotherhood influence it really is the pinnacle of what beauty our kind can do and bring to this world. When everything is said and done. I think you two would enjoy yourselves there for a few days.”

"You might want to lower your voice," Scott said, calmly, as her repeated mentions of the word 'Magneto' began to pile up. So far no one had noticed, but the coffee shop was a busy one and it would not be long before someone with big ears, and big fears caught the sound of this striking woman dropping the name of the boogeyman and casually suggesting they drop in on him. "Call him Erik, I'll know who you are talking about."

Scott had always been of two minds when it came to Magneto. The two men had a peculiar understanding of each other, and something that bordered on respect. Both sought the best for their people and their future, it was simply their differing opinion on what that best was and how to achieve it that made them clash. But Scott had never denied the fact that if it had been Magneto who recruited him and not the Professor, that he would likely have found just as strong a reason to be Brotherhood as he had the X-Men.

Emma chuckled off her abandonment, and Scott narrowed his eyes behind his glasses, saying, "I'm afraid this isn't a laughing matter, Emma. You've not only made me look like a fool for trusting you, but you abandoned children who looked up to you, without a thought... again. You placed us in a very dangerous and very unsought position. What happened at the school ripped us open wide, and you, because of 'disgruntlement' poured salt into the wound, skipping merrily on your way. I don't know what you want me to say here. I don't know why you called me here to giggle about Oh, that's our Emma. I don't understand it, don't like it, and won't excuse it. Everything that you worked for since coming back, everything that you did to try and redeem yourself, try and prove to us... was it all a lie? Was this all just part of your little mind games to see if you could get me to put my trust in you, only to point and laugh later at how stupid I was?"

Scott asked for privacy sake to refrain from calling Magneto, by his code name and instead by his given name of Erik. Before laying into her about her abandoning of the X-Men.“Scott lets not kid ourselves. While I love teaching and being there for students I hold no false bravado that any of them actually look up to me. The most admiration I get from the student body is from the adolescent boys who hold me in their fantasy. Other than that if they want someone to look up to they go across the hall to Jean, Hank, Kurt, Warren or yourself. Barring a few special students over the years which took an actual interest in my teachings and wisdom.”

Emma closed her eyes and turned her head to look out the window before opening her eyes once again as she continued to speak. “And since we are on the subject would you honestly preferred I'd stayed? Fought tooth and nail with you and Jean over the circumstances surrounding... the disaster? Me publicly blaming you for doing nothing to prevent the attack. When X-Corps was under attack, I all but got on my hands and knees and begged you to get involved, Begged you to take the X-Men and send a message to the purifiers and make them think twice before ever coming to our doorstep. But instead you waited, sat back for orders. Claimed the safety of the students was paramount. Did you really think the Purifiers wouldn't find us Scott? Are you that blind. They have eyes and ears in every where SHIELD included. They have access to all are records, they have access to the Hellfire Club information. You dropped the ball. And I could be there every step of the way to throw it in your face and make a spectacle of it in front of the students or worse your wife.”

Emma focused her eyes on the table they sat at unable to look Scott in the glasses for her next statement. “And I know I am not big enough to put aside my opinions and not bring it up. I am not a team player Scott. I am not... a... never mind..” a sigh followed her broken thought as she continued “So leaving seemed like the right decision for everyone’s benefit. Me and you fighting over this would not have solved anything. I am sorry to have disappointed you Scott. And no this was never a game. Being an X-Men meant a great deal to me and your generosity did as well. Even if you can never trust me or respect me. I will always respect you. But I also wish you weren't so single minded. You're greatest flaw is you are too big of a boy scout. You are too good in your heart. You do the right thing in your own mind because its the right thing to do. But take it from me, The right thing to do. Is not always what you should do.”

And there it was. She laid it out blame and claimed that the whole attack was Scott's fault. But herself on a pedestal and pretended that she had done everything she could to prevent it, professing she had begged on hands and knees... none of which was true anywhere but in Emma's self concerned mind.

"You begged, Emma?" Scott asked, raising an incredulous eyebrow. "And when did that occur? Right after you told me that you broke the school protocol for safety in numbers by sending Mr Guthrie out on an errand, alone, and then did not inform us of his whereabouts until after the attack on X-Corps? Or was it after you volunteered to spend time in Cerebro to search for him... oh, wait, it couldn't have been then, because you didn't. Jean did that, didn't she, on my request. Was it the hours of patrol you put in securing the school? Oh, no, you did none of that either. Emma, you're not blaming me for all of this, you blame yourself and that idea is so foreign to you, so distasteful that you'd rather lie to yourself than admit it."

His voice never raised, and he never made a move to make it look like an argument so that people would turn to take notice. "The fact of the matter is, I will not compromise the school's moral stance on anything less than positive success. If we lashed out and went first strike on these men, if we could find them at all that is, we would have broken enough laws to get every last one of us thrown in the Cage, students and all, we would have lost our in with Shield, which believe it or not, we still do have. We would have been branded criminals and terrorists, big bad mutants attacking humans, and if they have all these contacts, do you honestly think that they wouldn't spin it so that it looked like we were the ones who went off the rails? I made a calculated risk, Emma, that we could defend the school from direct attack and we did. It was the covert onslaught that caught us unawares, and not one of us could have predicted it... unless you are saying that you could have, in which case, I have to ask why you didn't."

Leaning back in his chair, he sipped his coffee and said, "And, you are wrong, Emma. The right thing is always what should be done. It's hard, and it hurts sometimes, but it's always what we should do. The ability to know right from wrong is one of the most important things for a person to have. Lawfulness is not always the right way, perhaps, because laws are only made by men and men are flawed. But we aren't talking about following every law to the letter here, are we. I'm a boy scout, sure, but when the world is on the brink of disaster, I have lead powerful men and women with diverse and conflicting personalities and philosophies in battles to save the planet and every man, woman and child, human or mutant. I don't claim full credit for any of it, because my people, and those who chose to join with us in those moments did more that I can ever say, but the fact of it is that they came to me and my ideas of what is right, so don't try and spin this back on me. This was unavoidable failure and no one comes away without blood on their hands."

“If we are going to call a spade a spade Scott, I told you about Jay as soon as the news broke. Ran down to the hanger to find you and yes Scott, begged you to saddle up a team and head off to the X-Corps building. While you pussyfooted around with your protocol.” Emma stopped herself from going any further passing blame off onto Scott for the whole Purifier situation. “And yes I take full blame for Mister Guthrie being involved. However I also blame you for not sending a rescue team. Derek and Bobby where there as well. 3 of our own in a warzone and we did nothing. We waited for a phone call that never came and Mister Guthrie paid the price for that. And I could run the gamut on the numerous reasons why I didn't go on cerebro not wanting to step on your wives toes. But you don't want to hear my excuses that much is clear.”

Emma then sat up straighter and leaned forward a bit across the table and added “Whether you like to believe it or not Scott. You control the most powerful unified mutant army this world knows you could march those X-Men to the doors of Sanctuary and destroy the entire Brotherhood if you so wished. And don't dare tell me they aren't an army with all the military training invested in everyone at that School over the years. And you do not need to be a telepath to know when the prospect of the brawl with the Purifiers on the front lawn didn't make more than a few of them very, very, very happy. They've been training for war since they were Children.”

Emma then slouched back into the seat before taking the conversation on a different tangent. “I don't want to fight with you Scott. But we are far too different, we clash. Its unfortunate I like you Scott I really do. But I can't see things as black and white as you can... or well darker and lighter shades of red.” A slight grin formed on Emma's lips with the small joke. “I wish I could see the world from your eyes even for a day but its clear every decision you've ever made is justified in your own as are mine. And there is no reasoning with anyone who is completely justified in themselves.” Emma then put her hands down on the table and changed up the pace of the conversation once again. “When Magne.. When Erik asked me to his office he offered me a job.”

Emma than added somewhat sheepishly. “I accepted it. The Sanctuary is starting a school of their own, He asked me to be the Headmistress. I may not be an X-Man anymore, But I would like to think that does not mean we can still not be cordial with each other perhaps even be friends.”

"It's sad that you see them as an army," Scott said, finishing his coffee and crumpling this napkin he had to toss it inside the empty cup, "Because I see them as young men and women who are striving to learn who they are, what they can do, how they can exist in this society. I see it as a school, and I'm sorry that you can't. Make all the snide remarks you want about my seeing in black and white, but that's never been my problem. I've always said that there's value and some level of justification on Erik's philosophies. It's his methods I object to, and it's the very reason I stress a scholastic approach to power control in opposition to a battle training scenario, the Danger Room being the sole exception because I'm realistic enough to know that we can't avoid warfare entirely. Because I don't train our students to go looking for battle, you think that means I'm neglecting their strength? Well, who's being narrow minded now?"

She prattled on a little more about how this was all his fault and how she would never see otherwise and Scott shook his head, "Emma, I saw a different side of you when I was in the other world, a woman who still had hope and faith, and that is not a part of you you can simply deny, no more than I can deny that Ruby, with his anger and desire for control, is part of me. When we merged in that strange void of Onslaught's, I saw what you did for him, I saw how you offered him a chance at salvation. That one act there, that one glimmer of hope, showed me that you're so much better than you believe yourself to be."

He rose from his chair, pushing it in and leaning over the back of it, to loom over her, his tall, straight form imposing but not threatening, "You think you can run the Sanctuary School, you give it a try. You want to see through my eyes, well then stare at the faces of terrified and angry children, and try to explain to them why they will never be able to walk the streets of their birthplaces without being hated and feared, because the man who sponsors their education is bent on genocide to replace the dominant species of the planet with a minority, most of whom can't control their own abilities. I hope it works out for you, Emma, I really do, but honestly, I expect that you'll stick with it just until some cataclysm happens, and then you'll run off to save your pretty white skin until the danger has passed. I can guarantee you, though, Erik will not be as ready to let you come back, as I was... and I emphasize the word was."

“Scott please sit.” Emma asked as Scott rose from his chair. “Don't leave on these terms.” Emma reached a hand out and motioned Scott back to the seat he once occupied. “What happened in the other world, This other Emma... She came from different circumstances and no matter how hard I try I could never live up to someone elses standards, My father saw to that years ago. I can only be who I am and who I am. Most times isn't very nice. I say hurt feel things, make snide comments and think the worst of people and expect them to think the worst of me in return. And I always prove them right.”

Emma edged on her seat closer towards where Scott was standing but remaining in her seat. “Erik has his methods as barbaric as they maybe. I can not sway his opinions just as I can not sway yours. He knows I will not be apart of the innocent slaughters his group preforms. But I will also not shy away from lending a helping hand should the circumstances call for it. I have a moral code as skewed as it maybe.” Emma then backed away to a more comfortable position in her seat still trying to meet the gaze of Scott through his glasses.

“Like I said Scott. I am not a team player. That much is evident. I've let down every team I've ever been apart of. Walked out on them and abandoned them. And those stigmas always, always follow me. Where ever being with the X-Men was a constant reminder of how... of how... misguided my life has been. Again going back to right decisions not always being the right choice I am afraid. Unfortunately I do not have the strength and courage you have Scott and staying with you and the X-Men would have been more and more constant reminders of how bad and evil I am. Isn't it strange how one has to associate with the most vile to realize how... never mind it doesn't matter. If you want to leave, I wont bother you anymore.” Emma looked away again and muttered softly. “Thank you for at least meeting Again, I'm sorry.”

Emma urged him to sit, but Scott remained standing, listening to Emma talk in circles. He couldn't believe this woman, honestly, he couldn't believe the things she was saying. God, for a telepath, for someone who was supposed to have intimate knowledge of the mind, it was amazing that Emma did not entirely understand her own. Perhaps it was because he could watch her from the outside, Scott realized that he could see in her what she did not see in herself. Interesting. He wondered idly if that's why Jean loved him, and why he could never understand why. It was easier to understand others than it was to understand yourself, at times, apparently, easier to see their value.

"Emma," Scott said, his voice taking on the exhaustion that was plaguing him, his sleep patterns obviously off, his stress levels high. If he didn't have an ulcer before forty he'd eat his hat, though all truth be told, everyone, Scott included, understood that he thrived on the tumult of the world. Once it might have been different, but the still-barely remembered manipulations of mind and body instrumented by Nathaniel Essex, the monster known as Sinister, had made it impossible for Scott to find comfort in peace. He was almost a stress junkie, his best moments, his most productive, his most clear moments being in the thick of danger. He pushed himself to his limit over and over, each time going just that much farther that would increase what it was he did, what it was that he was, and though it was often painful, though it was on occasion tiring, Scott couldn't live any other way.

But, these events had stretched him farther beyond his limits than he truly understood and it would have shown in his eyes... if anyone could see them. "Emma," he said again, "I can't convince you of your own worth. You keep saying how you hate what you are and how you would change if you could. The only person stopping you is you, yourself. You can be whoever, whatever you want. You're smart, you're beautiful, you're powerful, you can do whatever you set your mind to. The fact that you are content letting yourself be shackled to your shortcomings is a tragedy, and I'm sorry to say this, but right now, I have no more room in me for more tragedy. I'm all full up."

She continued her attacks on herself, and Scott leaned close, his voice dropping into a whisper, looking for all the world watching that he was going to impart some lascivious secret, some secret lover's pact, and he saw the woman from the other world in his mind's eye. Then he said, simply, "Good and evil are subjective, Emma, and they are changeable states. I'm a good man because I want to be one. I want to be perceived as a decent, upright person, boy scout as you termed it, and I get a measure of satisfaction playing the hero. It gives me the means to live a life that I'm proud of, and when I go to bed at night, no matter what horrors I have faced that day, I sleep soundly, content that what I'd done to stop, fix or prevent others from facing those horrors was the right thing. For you to continually remind me of your wickedness, your evil, and yet keep doing those things that shame you... it suggests to me that you're a bad woman because you want to be. You're a coward, Emma, you're afraid to do what's right, because it's hard and sometimes it hurts."

He straightened and smoothed his suit. "My brother is standing trial for the evils that someone else forced him to do, and he is taking responsibility for it, because it's the right thing to do. Do I like it? No. Am I proud of him for it? Absolutely. When you're able to realize that this is a bed of your own making, maybe you'll be tired of sleeping in it."

He turned to go and said, "We'll be here when that time comes, Emma... because despite what you think about how I run things, it's what we do."

Scott tried to reassure Emma of her own self worth, Telling her she controls her levels of good and evil and only she can decide her own worth. However his tolerance for a pity party was at its limit with the amount of stress and tragedy coming his way over the past few months. When Scott leaned forward and spoke directly and softly into Emma's ear not before standing back up straightening and talking about his brother and the trial. Emma still said nothing listening to the words Scott spoke. As he was just about to leave.

“I can only commend you on your continuing mission to do the right thing Scott, And find it beautiful you can see the good in everyone. You follow your heart and it leads you where you need to be. I follow mine and I end up somewhere on the opposite side of the spectrum, Is it my choice to end up there? In the black and white sense of the world it is. I am governed by my heart, It has led me astray from time to time, Even a diamond can be flawed. And as rash as my decision to leave may have been. I hope it will turn out to be for the best this time. I think I have an opportunity to do some good down there.”

Emma stood up from her place at the table as well at this point. “I will miss you Scott, And I truly hope this is not the last time we meet. And before we part ways, I will offer you the same I offered Erik, Should you ever need me please do not hesitate to ask.” Emma figures even if a time came when Scott needed a telepath the staff the X-Men had would be adequate for most every situation that arose but gave the offer of good faith anyway. “Perhaps even one day my heart will lead me back to where ever the X-Men call home and I need to beg for your acceptance again... Until then thou, Give Alex my best.”

Emma then rested her hand on Scott shoulder. “Jean and the rest... I wont hold you any longer.” Emma then quickly removed her hand as she prepared to part ways.
