An Evening with Mrs. Sandman; Wild Child, Dreamer

At first it seemed that the trio was standing on the edge of a basketball court. The heat emanating from the blacktop was nice yet not overpowering. Two opposing teams, shirts and skins, were running the ball back and forth along the outdoor court in a heated match. Friends and girlfriends watched from the sidelines and cheered excitedly. It had started as a pickup game but the competition quickly escalated and drew a crowd around the perimeter of the court in the park. A ball went through the chain net with a metallic swish and the fans of one team cheered. Everyone was happy and having a great time. It was one of Dylan Turner’s greatest memories. He had cherished these moments. “Sorry, Dylan has been on my mind a lot lately,” Rogue explained. “This is a memory of him leading his team to victory against some of the older kids from his school. His mutant ability had nothing to do with his basketball skills. He was a natural.”

Rogue, Kyle and Beautiful Dreamer were sharing a dream. It was Rogue’s dream at the moment and she had plopped them right into the middle of a fun summer afternoon. She was thankful it wasn’t a land reminiscent of a Dali panting or something more…intimate. The Southern Belle had met Dreamer briefly during her visit to the mansion, while there was still a mansion. When Rogue finally got settled in New York they had tried to arrange a meeting in the dream realm with the Dreamer as a conduit but hadn’t been that successful. That night however was a triumph but it was still unfamiliar territory for the power absorber. “Dylan Turner was a student at the school. He was dying and Ah took all of his memories at that last moment. Ah’ve been trying to hold onto each one but they’ve been fadin’. Ah wasn’t expecting to wind up here by any means,” she explained.

During Rogue’s time in the Savage Land she had really missed Kyle. With the dome encapsulating Mutant Town they had been cut off and she had been literally a world away. With so much pain, anger, and danger in the world Rogue just wanted something of her own that was safe and sound. That was hard to do however, when she was afraid that her powers would kill anyone she came into contact with.

This wasn't the first time the Dreamwalk had served as a meeting-place for people who could not meet in the physical world, but it was definitely going in her personal memoirs as the most unusual meetings she'd ever facilitated.

Rogue's arrival in the Dreamwalk a few nights ago had been odd enough: two X-Men in as many weeks was more interaction with Summers' crew than she'd had since she and Callisto had arrived at Xavier's Institute, back before the Purifiers' attack. But it made some sense: it had always been easier for people to find the Dreamwalk once they'd met her in person, especially if they knew how her power worked, and she'd met both women in person on that trip. This new fellow, Kyle, otherwise known as Wild Child, was a different matter: she'd never met him before at all, but Rogue knew him quite well (albeit not quite as well as they would prefer, apparently), and he was highly motivated. Much as with the more conventional sort of lucid dream, sometimes that was enough.

It had been in this case, at least: after several failed attempts over the last several evenings, Kyle and Rogue had both finally managed to enter the Dreamwalk on their own. Under other circumstances, Dreamer would likely have taken the opportunity to surreptitiously scan their memories for interesting tidbits, but as she'd said to Rahne: under the circumstances there were things about the X-Men's current status -- most crucially, the exact location of their safehouse -- that they, and by extension the Morlock children they were caring for, were safer if Dreamer remained ignorant of. So she had left Rogue's mind mostly untouched. Her boyfriend was a different matter, though, and had proved a fascinating source of information about current events in Mutant Town and the surface world in general.

None of which, admittedly, had anything to do with their current project. As Dreamer understood it -- which, thanks to a certain amount of understandable embarrassment and a cloud of euphemism, was less clearly than she might have liked -- while the couple was more than ready to add physical intimacy to their relationship, the nature of Rogue's mutation made that a dangerous thing to do in the material world. So when Rogue had heard about the Dreamwalk, she'd immediately identified it as a potential solution to that problem.

That in and of itself wasn't an especially novel use of the Dreamwalk either. Many Morlocks had taken advantage of it over the years to overcome various physical obstacles, as well as just for fun; she and Hector had come to enjoy it as a source of variety. But this was the first time Dreamer had ever offered that particular service to Topsiders, and it felt odd. Still, Rogue seemed like a sweet girl, and despite his evocative name Kyle struck her as a decent sort. So why not?

"Welcome to the Dreamwalk, both of you. Rogue, you've been here before, and I see you've explained some of what you have in mind to your beau, but perhaps it will help if you go over it again, just so we're all clear?"

Kyle wasn't one for sports, outside of hockey. Yeah it played a stereotype, a Canadian liking hockey? Who would have ever thought. However the memories were important to Rogue, because they belonged to one of the kids at the school she's been at for a long time. Most of the time that he's known her. Even though it was a dream, he was so glad to see her. Even if they had a third wheel, but the woman was nice and allowed the two of them to meet in this dream place. Mutants were all kinds of amazing.

First time he saw Rogue in the dreamwalk tonight he couldn't control his reaction, dream or not it was the first time he got to see her face to face in such a long time, phone calls just didn't cut it. He hugged her, tightly, even if there was some weird possibility that her powers worked in this world. Though he didn't touch any skin, dream skin, whatever. He almost kissed her as well, though stopped remembering that they had someone with them. Dreamer.

The scene changed to some mid-summer fun of someone's memories. It wasn't his, mostly cause outside of recently, summers had never been much fun. Excluding the times he got to play with wolf pups. That was always fun, always made him feel more like he was part of the pack when he got to do that. Though now he ran with a new pack, a new family that he cared about a lot. Rogue was included in that group, though held a far more special place in his mind.

"Thanks for doing this...Dreamer." Kyle said to the woman, his tone of voice conveying how much it meant to him that he got this opportunity with his girlfriend. He looked to Rogue as Dreamer asked to go over the reasoning on why they were here. Kyle was told before, but well in feral mutation induced ADHD he kind of focused on the fact that he was going to get to see her again...and sort of glazed over everything else. He really needed to focus better. "Yeah, just so we...like focus." He gave a little nod.

Beautiful Dreamer welcomed to the Dreamwalk. Her form in the realm of dreams was a bit different than she did in the physical world. Her corporeal form was heavily disfigured. Rogue had felt sorry for the woman who used large hats and boas to cover herself and hide her face. Dreamer had worn a veil to cover her scars and probably protect others as much as to protect herself. Though, in the Dreamwalk she was a black and white copy of Auntie Mame, from the movie with the same name. Rogue assumed that when you could control dreams you could take any form you wished, kind of like playing a character in one of Jamie’s online computer games.

“Thanks again, for helping us and giving us the opportunity to try this out,” Rogue said.

Rogue had been in contact on the phone with Kyle but being there with someone, someone you cared about was much different than being in a really long distance relationship. When their first entered the Dreamwalk Rogue was really excited to see Kyle and what the evening could mean. When Kyle rushed in and hugged her tightly she felt warm and safe but there was still the twinge of fear. Even though it was a dream she was still wary of touching anyone. That was the experiment for the evening.

Rogue could feel the dream version of her getting a little warm in the face and it wasn’t the summer sun beaming down on her. “Well, as you know about my powers, contact with my skin will draw the life from the person Ah’m touchin’. As you could imagine, that makes relationships harder than normal. Ah hoped that you might give us another option,” Rogue explained then her face grew warmer. “Not that Ah’m askin’ you to hang around while we hook up or anything!”

Rogue wasn’t normally so unguarded and it was a little hard for her. She wanted to be with Kyle and the telepaths she knew and trusted were slightly indisposed at the time and Beautiful Dreamer was a really nice lady. Rogue wanted to feel more comfortable and so she focused her mind again to shift the scenery. She went to her safe place for meditation. They were then on the banks of the Mississippi River. The sun was setting and casting the golden light across the still water. She felt more comfortable already. “This is my safe place. Ah come here when Ah meditate, to set things right and quiet in my head. When Ah was little Ah came here sometimes,” Rogue said, and looked down realizing that she had materialized herself in her ‘safe outfit’ of the jean shorts and red flannel shirt. “Ah’ve never shown anyone else this place except for Emma and Jean. It really is one of my favorite places on Earth.”

Dreamer snorted at the girl's embarrassment. "Honey, I'm almost 50 years old, raised a kid, buried one husband and walked out on another. Not to mention I've been doing Dreamwalk sessions for Morlocks for a decade. I promise, you've got nothing I haven't seen before." She couldn't resist the urge to add, with a sideways glance at her boyfriend and a literal twinkle in her eye, "Though come to think of it, he might. Is it true what they say about feral lovers?" She was just teasing her guests, though. The truth was, they were both just about the sweetest people she'd met in years, and she was happy to help them out.

"Never mind," she added after a brief pause, "I'm just messing with you; you'll have all the privacy you need." Dreamer had refrained from making any particular manipulations to the environment, allowing it to reflect Rogue and Kyle's own minds. She was impressed when the young woman altered the setting so crisply; most people lacked that level of control, but her subsequent reference to a meditative practice explained it. The scene wasn't at all familiar to Dreamer, but a quick probe into Rogue's memory unpacked it. "It's lovely, Rogue. Like something out of Mark Twain. Don't worry if stuff starts changing around you, though," she added as an afterthought, "that happens a lot around here. Nothing can hurt you, no matter what it looks like. Just roll with it; you'll have more fun that way. And that's the end of my embarrassing 'hook-up' advice for the evening, boys and girls! I'll leave you young people alone now."

As Dreamer walked away, a silver bucket rose out of a tree stump near the river containing ice and a magnum of champagne. Engraved on the bucket were the words "Compliments of the management."

Kyle couldn't even manage to look at Dreamer as Rogue more or less brought up intimacy in their relationship. It was more than just the fact that Rogue's powers became a barrier, but Kyle was relatively new to anything involving a relationship. There was also the fact that when the two started dating the young feral himself was wary about getting close to anyone for fear of losing control and hurting them. He's learned to control that side of him as of late, even went out drinking and having fun with a bunch of his team mates while they were trapped in the dome. He was growing as a person.

Though he still probably would have choked if he were eating anything with Beautiful Dreamer's little comment about feral lovers. Even for the as of late 'in control' Wild Child, his face took on a bit of a red tint of embarrassment. "I haven't the faintest idea." He muttered eyes looking everywhere but at the women. He was always such an easy target for teasing, sometimes it proved to just irritate him, however in this particular case it was more just embarrassment.

The reprieve of it all was Rogue's dream that she shifted the scene to. "Wow." Kyle muttered softly in awe. He loved nature in all of its natural glory. Even if this wasn't the heavily forested lakes and rivers of the Canadian wilderness that he was familiar with. There was still something calming about it all.

Wild Child gave a light awkward wave to Dreamer as she started to leave, unsure what else he should say to the woman other than 'thank you', which he already said. Then raised an eyebrow as he saw the bucket with the bottle of champagne and glasses. "She certainly is something else..." Kyle chuckled lightly as he picked up the bottle, uncorking it with a claw and popping the top off. "Care for a drink, m'lady?" Kyle asked with a smirk at Rogue as he poured the glasses and set the bottle down.

He started walking closer to her with the gasses at hand, offering one for her. "It is really great to see you again." He muttered softly. "I can't really explain how great it is..." Kyle added before he found himself leaning in closer without out a thought to kiss her, though caught himself mid way. "Sorry...your dream, your pace..." He said a little embarrassed starting to back off. He didn't want to rush things for her, or himself, though parts of his feral mind thought differently.

Rogue was slightly reassured by Dreamer’s comment of having been around and seen a few things in her time. Rogue was really just trying to protect her modesty. She didn’t know where things were going to lead but even if they didn’t devolve into some raunchy foray and remained simply a tender moment between a girl and her boyfriend, Rogue didn’t want any Peeping Toms. Rogue appreciated the discretion very much. Someday she would have to pay Dreamer back for the opportunity. When Dreamer turned the teasing toward Kyle, Rogue grinned slightly. It was funny and it took the spotlight off of her for a moment. Rogue thought it was cute that Kyle blushed a little bit. The power absorber also took pride in Dreamer’s compliment on the scenery she had created. It was a place she held close to her heart and she had retreated there often in her meditation.

As the Beautiful Dreamer walked away she created a bottle of champagne that rose out of a tree stump. It was a nice touch as the Morlock was helping to set the mood as best she could. Rogue felt they could use all the help they could get. She had been in situations before where she had to seduce someone to steal their secrets with a kiss but she hadn’t cared for them the way she cared about the Canadian feral. The point of the exercise that night was to get around that little ‘Hands-Off’ policy. “Of course, good sir,” Rogue replied to Kyle’s offer of champagne.

He came closer and offered the glass which she took easily. Yes, and Rogue agreed whole-heartedly. She was so glad to see him again. After the tragedy at the school, after flying to Utopia, after everything all she wanted to do was hold him and make up for lost time. Rogue smiled and replaced some of her hair behind her ear. Kyle broke off his speech and closed the distance between them, eclipsing her like a moon. "Sorry...your dream, your pace..." he said in apology.

Rogue knew exactly how he felt. They were apart so long and this excursion was supposed to be…well, whatever it wound up being in the end. The Southern Belle smiled softly. “Thank you. Ah’ve thought about you a lot, you know. It feels like years since we last saw each other. Through all of this all Ah wanted to do was curl up beside you and sleep for a week.”

Rogue stepped closer and wrapped her arms around Kyle’s chest and held him. She pressed her head against his shoulder. “How have you been holding up?” she asked.

As Dreamer walked out of the couple's sight, she settled down an indescribable distance away from the pastoral setting and conjured up a one-way window to view them through. "You really are a nosy old bitch," she muttered contentedly to herself. She even had the grace to feel vaguely sheepish about it, but curiosity was far more powerful a force than discretion for her, especially in the Dreamwalk where she could spy without risking being caught. Somewhat disappointingly, though, they remained platonicly affectionate for quite some time.

Dreamer rolled her eyes. "Gather ye rosebuds while ye may," she quoted where they couldn't hear her, "Old Time is still a-flying, and... something about flowers," she mumbled, then pulled an illuminated collection of English poetry off of a convenient shelf off to her left and opened it. It fell open to Herrick's "To the Virgins, to make much of Time," which she re-read casually while she waited for the awkward youngsters to get on with it. Of course, she could have just extracted the memory of the poem, but there was something about the experience of actually turning the pages of a properly bound book that she was unwilling to give up.

"Really, my love? Has life among the Morlocks grown so dull that you've been reduced to prurient spying on innocent visitors?" Dreamer grinned at Hector's voice plucked from her own memories; somehow talking to herself never seemed quite so weird in the Dreamwalk. "Oh, hush you; you're one to talk. How many years did you spend visiting me in my dreams before you finally introduced yourself? Pfft." A snifter of brandy appeared in her hand as she flipped idly through her collection of English verse, and after a moment's thought she conjured a cloud of butterflies whose wings played romantic violin music and sent them over to Rogue and Kyle.

JP between Rogue and Kyle

Rogue and Kyle sat and chatted for a short time. She felt on one hand that they were wasting time but she didn’t want to be a low-life floozy either. Dreamer had given them the chance for their late night encounter. Soft music played near them as if it was being broadcast from the very air. A cloud of butterflies fluttered by and danced around them on fragile wings. Rogue smiled and took a sip of her champagne. She set the goblet to the side. “All my life, Ah’ve wanted something like this but my powers have cut me off from everyone,” she said. “Ah hate that I have to experience this in a dream but Ah’m happy it’s with you.”

Kyle's eyes took on their natural blue color without that wildness that they almost always seemed to show as the night went on, it was one of the few visible signs that his body ever gave that he was relaxed, happy even.

She spoke and he smiled softly setting his own glass down as he looked at her. "You're not alone on that, you know. Feeling cut off because of your powers or life..." He responded to the southern belle. "I can't really think of anyone I'd want to share this with, dream or not. I'm happy it's with you too."

Rogue noticed the change in Kyle’s eye color. The human side was dominant; his wild side had drained away. Rogue felt so lucky to have Kyle. He was eager to make her happy and willing to look past the circumstances of her powers. It helped that he had a healing factor, too. The Southern Belle had a small smile tug at the corner of her mouth. She leaned in, twisting her body only slightly. The distance between her lips and Kyle’s shrank and shrank until there was none. Rogue felt her skin against Kyle’s soft lips. The contact was short but it made her face tingle, but not in the way that accompanied her absorbing someone’s life. “That was nice,” she said playfully.

He tilted his head slightly and helped close the distance between the two of them faster, though not much faster than the own distance between them. He could smell her even in the dream world, reminding him of that strawberry scent of that first night they met. Then their lips met for a short time before they parted. "Yeah..." He said like it was the only thing he could say.

Rogue was feeling amazing. She had never kissed someone and not taken their life energy or memories. Rogue had absorbed Kyle’s abilities and thoughts before but not through a kiss. She had used a kiss to steal bits of what she needed in the past but this was wholly different. This was actually something to be happy about. Rogue moved in once again and pressed her lips to Kyle. She wanted to kiss him and hold him. The striped woman had wanted to do so for so long but had been denied. She brought up a hand and pressed it to his cheek feeling the stubble there. She had felt strongly for the feral the night he saved her life and that feeling had only intensified with time.

He put his hand on top of hers as she touched his face and the light stubble that covered it. Bane of most ferals was excessive body hair growth leaving Kyle needing to shave pretty much every day to maintain a clean cut look, if not more so. Kyle smiled and rested his head against her hand for a moment before scooting closer to her and sliding an arm around her back. He wanted to say anything but was more afraid about ruining that moment with whatever was caught in his throat he dared not to.

Rogue didn’t speak. She was afraid that she would shatter the moment forever and it would never return. She felt alive as happiness washed over her. In the dream they could do anything. They could shape the world around them and even explore their feelings like they had been afraid to before. Is this what love feels like? she wondered.

Rogue stroked her claws along Kyle’s jaw as she breathed him in deeply. Claws? Rogue’s eyes snapped open. The pleasant tingling across her body had switched to the familiar sensation of imprinting another person. Her nails, ears and fangs extended as she copied Kyle’s mutation.

He was leaning closer feeling that similar tingle she was, almost exhilarating until he felt something a little sharper stroking his cheek, his eyes opened wider to see her own set take on the slitted pupils that he had. He was light headed, stomach filled with butterflies and he realized that it was more than just how he felt about her. She was draining him, even in their dreams.

"No..." He muttered softly and felt his body start to get a little weak as he started fall away from her.

Rogue pushed roughly away, breaking contact with Kyle. “Dammit,” she swore and said hurriedly. “Kyle Ah’m so so sorry!”

Why did it have to be like this? Why did you always want something you could never have? Rogue turned her face away. It was painful to experience that, even in dream, to only then have it ripped away. “Am Ah so damaged that even in my dreams Ah’m a killer?” she asked with tears in her eyes but still not looking to Kyle.
He caught himself from falling completely bracing himself with an arm, knocking over his drink. It wasn't fair, out of everything cruel happening in the world...everything she had been through, everything he had been through. This just wasn't fair.

And she was crying... and that is what killed him inside, for her to be brought to tears.

“Rogue..." He muttered softly, putting his hand on her clothed covered back. "You're not a killer, you're the sweetest and most beautiful person I've ever met..." He said softly before slipping his arms around her from behind, being careful not to touch her skin.

Well, that was interesting: even in the Dreamwalk, the girl's power operated without her control, and the boy's life-force, or whatever it was her power was acting on, was drained without his consent. At least, it seemed that way, though Dreamer was well aware that appearances could be deceiving here... it was possible that they were cooperating on a subconscious level. Actually, come to think of it, they might be fully aware of their cooperation and engaged in some convoluted role-playing scenario, though Dreamer was inclined to doubt it; neither of them seemed quite experienced enough to be interested in that sort of thing. Of course, she could find out easily enough by probing their recent memories, but she refrained; the poor dears deserved some privacy.

For the same reason, she didn't intervene to protect Kyle. While her own years of adolescent fumbling in the back seat of her boyfriend's car were thankfully long behind her, she remembered them well enough (with her abilities, how could she not?) to suspect that any intrusion on her part would ruin the mood. Well, any overt intrusion, anyway. Some interventions she could manage without calling attention to herself, and it seemed that these two needed all the help they could get. She was idly whistling the melody line to "Kiss the Girl" as she raised the ambient temperature about ten degrees and added a small lagoon to the landscape while they weren't looking, editing their memories just enough to make it seem like it had always been there.
