June 11th, afternoon She had taken her time. Made him sweat, so to speak. Max, the deposed Black King of the Hellfire Club was in her custody. She had finally gotten what she needed to garner an arrest warrant and, even if she wasn't sure if she had quite enough to make it stick, prosecuting mutants was like nailing Jello to the wall, she was going to make damn sure he knew the game had changed forever. Guards, all highly trained SHIELD Agents, saluted her as she passed by. For them, it was an honor to be able to show their gratitude for the woman who ran it all, the woman who 'stopped a civil war'. She was a hero, the human face of the mutant/human unity movement. For most people, she found, the problem with being on equal footing with mutants was a matter of self assurance. How could they feel equal to beings that could literally move mountains? Of course, stunts like Magneto and the Brotherhood pulled, misguided attempts to show their superiority with unspeakable acts of horror, did much to set the movement back. Of course, she would deal with them in time as well. But for today, the bird in her cross hairs was Max. "Open it," she said of the Agent when she came to Max's cell. He did not hesitate in doing what she asked. Maria strode in, as cocky as she felt she had the right to be. "Your Highness," she addressed him in a mocking tone. "I trust you find our accomidations suitable to your refined senses, our food delicate enough for your royal palette." "Leave us," she turned to the guard at hand. "Ma'am?" This time he did hesitate. "All of you. I want this floor cleared. Take a long lunch." "That's against protocol, Madam Director," he replied feebly. "I make protocol, and I want a few minutes alone with our guest here." They reluctantly left and Maria grabbed a chair and sat it across from Max. "You're going to answer some questions for me, sir. The easy way or the way you deserve, that's up to you." |

Darkforce Manipulation, Teleportation

His fancy clothes were gone. His finely trimmed beard had grown less neat over the last week. But a king isn't made by clothes or the crispness of his appearance, a king is a king, even in rags, and the ill-fitting SHIELD prison issue jumpsuit certainly qualified in Max's book as rags. A fist-size bruise discolored his scruffy jaw and another bruise and cut decorated the side of his eye, but sitting in a lotus position on the hard cot meant to be his bed, his fingers curled over his knees, Max Coleridge still had the regal bearing of a king. "Your Highness," she addressed him in a mocking tone. "I trust you find our accommodations suitable to your refined senses, our food delicate enough for your royal palette." His ears had picked up the clicking of their boots on the polished floor long before they stopped before his cell door. He had, in fact, eaten or drunk very little in the last week and his cheeks had become more hollow over the days. His eyelids remaining closed, as they had throughout his time here, "Even though you are in a position to taunt me, you would be very unwise to do so," he replied coolly. "Have you cleaned up the blood already? I can still smell it. A coppery tang in the air. A bit of ozone also. Was there a short circuit?" He asked casually, not knowing or really caring if she replied. The deaths of the other prisoners meant nothing; they were just an amusement to keep from getting too bored in the cage. "How many prisoners have you lost so far? You're up into the double digits by my count. Soon, I'll start to develop a taste for it." She dismissed her guards and he heard the sharp scrape of chair sliding along the floor. He shifted his weight in readiness. "You're going to answer some questions for me, sir. The easy way or the way you deserve, that's up to you." A corner of Max's lips twisted up. "Answer me a question first," he countered. "All this hasn't really for some childish notion of Law, and some feeble and misguided attempt to bring the bad guy to Justice, has it? That would be infantile. Even for you." |
