May 19th 9:45am "James" sat at his desk, typing away at a holographic keyboard interface and downloading all the sensitive information he could get his hands on. He'd called Mitch in for a meeting to discuss the unpleasantness of what had been happening lately. There were several reasons he'd picked Mitch to talk to over say, Edmund or Moonbeam; those reasons however were his and his alone. As he worked, he would periodically tap a glowing button and one of the three computer screens on his desk would switch to all the security cameras up and recording the day to day of those at X-Corp. It had been agreed that security would be beefed up after Hartley's untimely meeting with her maker; and while he'd assured the good employees that their privacy wouldn't be infringed upon...he'd been a little naughty and told a few dozen white lies. That's why miniature cameras had been planted around the office where they wouldn't be happened upon and could record people at his leisure. It was an underhanded thing to do, but there was no way to know who the impostor was...he couldn't afford not taking any chance he could get. None were recording him of course; he knew the impostor wasn't him, so why would he waste the extra effort? He perked up when he saw that mane of ginger red walking through the halls and heading towards him; good, things needed to be discussed. When he reached the door and knocked, he pressed a button to electronically unlock it. "It's open." After he'd come in, the door closed and locked behind him and he gestured Mitch to take a seat. "I'm glad you could find the time out of your rather busy schedule to talk with me." He stood up and turned away from him, looking out the window and clasping his hands behind his back. "The last time I spoke with Hartley, she was staring out the window just like this...sort of ironic that she was looking out from so high up, and then it came rushing up to meet her." As he continued to look at the ants below him, the good doctor's skin began to ripple and shift. The healthy white turned pale, and then shifted to a soft green. Intricate scales pushed to the surface around the crown of his head and cheeks while he gained a bit more height and muscle mass; even his fingers and ears grew pointed at the tips. When he finally turned, he locked his steely golden gaze on the redhead. "You've done well, Xuva. Everything is going according to plan." |

"Remarkable coincidence, that. The last time I spoke with her, she was standing right by that window as well," Xuva replied, perfectly straightfaced. "Or, well, not standing exactly, but why quibble over such small matters as posture and velocity?" He shifted into his natural form then and smiled. It was a disturbing sight, judged by human standards. Of course, human standards were fairly irrelevant under the circumstances, and would rapidly grow more so. "Yes," he responded to Ra's compliment, "I did, and it is. May you do as well in your new role. Have you decided how you intend to take advantage of it?" Replacing Nemesis and doing away with Hartley had not been ad-hoc choices; a Child of Skrullos was now in charge of an organization perfectly placed to support the coming Invasion under the guise of providing humanitarian aid to the single-form scum that currently infested their former home. He could have replaced Hartley herself, of course, but this was better; in the wake of her obvious murder, "Nemesis" had been given carte blanche to implement whatever security measures he saw fit, and nobody would question those choices. And even if they did, "Director Bradley" could implement draconian and even frankly fascist policies while retaining his role that would have been considered suspiciously out of character for Director Lindwall. All was, indeed, going according to plan. "I have to say, it is a pleasure to have a real person to talk to after all these months. This ridiculous primate I'm impersonating at least has the good taste not to restrict himself to a single shape, but it is his only redeeming quality. I look forward to the Masquerade being lifted." |

He chuckled as they made light of Hartley's death and the process that lead up to it; and why wouldn't he? It was hilarious. "I wonder if she flapped her arms? I hear that sometimes humans perform acts of incredible futility and stupidity in the face of certain death." He poured himself a cup of the liquor that the real Nemesis was so fond of, and now apparently so was he. He nodded and thanked Xuva for his encouragement in his new position, then smiled a sinister thing with pointed teeth. "Oh, I have thought long and hard on how to best capitalize on my new position. Say what you will about these primitive creatures, but the abilities some of them possess are truly miraculous. I literally have plans within plans formulating as we speak; plans were, if executed correctly...there is no way for this not to go in our favor. Victory will be absolute regardless of the outcome." He didn't like to praise baser lifeforms, but this Bradley that he had imprinted upon was a genius the likes of which he'd never seen or heard of, even on Skrullos. If only someone with such a mind had been conceived there; this mission probably would have been done by now. With the brilliance he gained, he also received the massive arrogance...well in truth it was not unlike their own faith in victory. He finished his glass and set it down, reclining in his eat and nodding in agreement with his partner for the duration of the operation. "I must say. I have no idea how you've lasted this long amongst the swine. You're a testament to patience." Ra's had only recently been implanted; Xuva however had been undercover for quite some time. Just the thought of being surrounded by those imbecilic and inept animals for so long caused a violent shiver to run down his spine and slightly ripple his visage. He regained his natural form though and turned his seat to look at the city. "Oh yes...once the veil of deceit is lifted; we'll conquer this ball and take back what is rightfully ours. All of this;" he held his hands out to the busy city, the busy world. "Will be ours, once more." |
