Same time as MacReady

Gym class. At least that's what he called it, anyway. Maybe the more effective term for it was "power training", but "gym class" was the closest comparison he had.

It had been a few months since he'd first joined the X-Men in their jungle base, and young Steven Mercer was finally beginning to get the hang of his "bug control". Today they were outside, near the garden. The teacher was busy instructing one of the other girls, a "flame-thrower". He'd come up with his own version for names of what everyone could do. There were flame-throwers, ice-guys, zappy-chicks, wolf-people. And himself? He was a bug-boy.

His wings twitched and buzzed a bit on his back from the holes he'd cut into his shirt. It had taken a bit, but his back was almost healed enough for him to move them without pain. He was told he'd soon be ready to start taking flying lessons, but for now to focus on his, What was the word, again? Entymology? Gah...

He brushed at his face as he felt something creeping along his left cheek. There were other small sensations on his legs and arms, tiny little legs that itched and tickled as they made their way along his skin, but he really hated it when he could feel one of them on his face or in his hair. He brought his hand in front of him as he realized what it was.

Roaches. Or the closest thing to them here in the Savage Land. They looked enough like them, anyway. 'Cept these ones bite... He thought glumly as he let it crawl across his fingers, studying it, reaching out with it in his head. The link was becoming a bit clearer to him with practice. He likened it to flexing a muscle, only this time he was "flexing his brain". He focused on the little beetle, letting the tiny little waves ebb and flow as they would before flexing and redirecting them at it, watching with a slight smirk as the little bug began to move as he directed in a figure 8.

It wasn't until it stopped moving suddenly that he realized how dark it had become and noticed the startled murmurs from the other students looking up. His concentration broken, he could now feel it. His gaze shifted to the sky and his eyes widened at the swarm flying overhead. He could sense it, sure enough, but there was something off. Something way off.

"OW!!!" He shook his hand as the roach suddenly bit him. Examining it, he realized that it had been hard enough to draw blood. He sucked at it as a couple of people cast him a worried glance.

"It's not me!!!" he answered.

And then came the shrieks. All around them it sounded like the jungle was screaming, adding to the symphony of buzzing overhead, growing louder as they began to descend on the temple, and before long the entire garden area was filled thousands of tiny, flying, biting mouths.

Alarms went off and the other students began to scream in surprise as Steven began to swat at the bugs, panicking. These bugs were different. The more he tried to push them, the more he realized they were pushing back.

Stoppit... stoppit... Then, he got angry. "STOPPIT!!!"

FLEX

The swarm parted away from him like Moses and the Red Sea. Steven gritted his teeth as he continued to flex. It was a weird sensation. Normally, he'd give one flex, then that would be it, but this time, when he tried to let up, they closed back in. keep flexing... keep flexing... He began to tremble a bit as the bugs began to swirl and reel around him. He was managing to keep them a good ten to fifteen feet away from him, and a few of the other students quickly ran to his side.

And still they pushed. Steve knew that if he stopped for one second, they would be covered in a matter of seconds, but he'd never been under this kind of strain before. All he could do was focus on the push. And the roars beyond the buzzing sent a chill down his back that made his wings buzz. There were worse things than bugs heading their way.

The sound of foliage breaking drew his attentions. A ways off from the Utopia compound, the Genoshan stood in the forest. Long, triple-jointed forearms ending in cleaving claws planted themselves in the ground, the thick, heavy muscle of its long tail swaying behind it. He could smell another reptile nearby, the scent of fresh dung and the almost honking sound it made. He had become familiar with it, this common plant eater. It was a hadrosaur, one of the very same breeds that wandered the rivers where they had gone on the exploration expedition. It was either lost, which Kevin doubted, or it was now exploring the open reaches around Utopia. The fences against then were still down, both predator and prey were always creeping through the trees.

Suitably so, his powers allowed him to be quite the hindrance against them. A low thrum vibrated in his throat, a thick glob of black, tar-like spit falling from between the jagged teeth of his billed skull, the trollish creature took a hard step forward. A tree broke with his sudden movement, crashing to the side, both arms planting their long claws into the ground with a slam. The monster's mouth opened, releasing a long, aggressive roar.

The hadrosaur immediately shot off, its instincts driving it away from the sound of predators. Along the monster's back, bristling needle-hairs twitched and spasmed in unison, the movement rolling down to the tip of its tail. A gurgle swelled in his throat as the roar died off.

These sightings were more and more commonplace, Kevin had reported. With the absence of the dinosaur defenses, the ancient reptiles were coming closer and closer every day and in greater numbers. It was empty territory, untouched brush, and the perfect place to get some food.

Contented, Kevin turned. For a moment he turned an orange eye toward the sky, watching a flock fly low over the tree tops with little screeches. They made a sound unfamiliar to him but, even though he had been here for so long, many things remained unfamiliar. With a grunt, the monster began to lumber back through the foliage toward the temple. The little screeches of the creatures that flew overhead moments ago grew louder.

Scents filled his nostrils. He drew them in. Sickly, but strong. Small, but innumerable.

He watched them. Their shapes were equally unfamiliar. Twisting limbs, insect-ish attributes playing over reptilian bodies. Some did not appear to even have conceivable bases, their short heads and wide wings followed by a long backsides which stretched into mouths, the entire thing lined by hard, pointed legs. These twisted creatures seemed to come from a place like his mutation did, primeval and alien as anything that walked the Earth.

The flock thickened and, over by the temple, the Genoshan could see several mutants working against them. Some of the swarm began to lower, darting like rabid bats at those in the field and on the steps of the temple.

He felt a bite -- rather, what would barely constitute a bite -- on the back side of his neck. A faint pinching, an attempt to chew, but the thick scales thwarted the offending creature's mandibles. The troll shook its head, its gullet swaying on its neck, and the creature shot off. The monster's jaws snapped at the air quickly with a hiss, but missed, and the insectoid fiend flapped off to join its swarm.

The Genoshan growled, quills bristling from head to toe in irritation, the oft suppressed hunger rising in his stomachs. Lumbering forward into the field, the flying broodlings descended further and were met with swinging claw, tail, and snapping teeth.

Life had become unbelievably good for Sally, even though Utopia was unbelievably odd. Take today for instance. The young blond was halfway behind a tree watching two reptile like beings in what perhaps was their natural environment.. One was some kind of actual dinosaur, like the ancient history gigantic lizards you could see in a museum. This fact still kinda blew her mind. She was in a school full of people with amazing powers, which was placed in a savage jungle in the middle of a frozen region, which was filled with things from the dawn of time. The other was a mutant like her, but was just as primeval and powerful as any “terrible lizard”. Kevin Zaan, mutant shape-shifter, general grumpy Gus, and Rusty's rival. The last part was what had brought her out here to watch him.

He was an odd duck, very natural and solid when left to his own devices. He kinda did what animals did with an emphasis on protecting the compound. Which was perfectly fine with her, she'd probably do the same if she had better control of her abilities. She continued to watch him trying to figure out what Rusty's problem with him was.

Then the monster that was Kevin let out a roar that shook everything in sight and sent the dinosaur off at the highest possible speed it could manage. Sally was startled as well but she held her ground and fought back the primal urge of panic that swept over her. Freakshow was freaking scary! She really hoped what she had learned in Jurassic Park was true, predators wouldn't notice her if she didn't move. The shape-shifter's roar certainly revealed him as such. So she held very still and waited for a few moments.

The moment was broken as some strange swarm of bugs flew overhead. An entire swarm of the ickiest, ugliest, freaky, bugs this side of a Manhattan basement. A few tried to land on her but her bubble made their efforts useless. This rare happenstance made her grateful for her power as she got moving away from the critters.

However the big scary troll guy was instead headed in the same direction as the bugs. They were headed towards the temple actually. In the temple were students, staff, X-Men, and most importantly one Rusty Collins. Who didn't have a force-field. Who could project flames that most likely would hit others who didn't have force-fields. This was bad, very bad.

Her mind made up she rocketed at full speed towards the temple grounds. She focused carefully and remembered the lessons she had learned from Spider-Guy and Rusty. She could help, she could find some people and protect them. Perhaps the younger ones. She only needed to find someone to tell her where to find them and what to do.

Bruiser and Lockheed JP
________________________________

"Yeah, and then they all joined into one giant robot..."

Derek spoke to the tiny purple dragon know as Lockheed without looking at him as he sifted through his toolbox in the janitor's closet. After their little "conversation" in Rahne's class, the two of them had actually managed to calm down and talk things over civilly. It still felt a bit strange that he was talking to a dragon, but he had to admit, now he thought it was cooler than ever.

Over the past few weeks, Derek would often find the little guy hanging around the places where he would usually go at some point during the day, usually when Rahne was having class. After hearing the reptile's part of the story (and getting it through his head that the lil' guy really was just another stray in this motley crew), The two of them had actually become good buddies.

Truth was, Doug had gone all mushbrained over Amara and had stopped being a worthwhile conversant, and there was something wrong with Rahne. He had tried to tell Derek about his reservations of Rahne, but he never could bring himself to say anything.

She smelled different, she felt different, and their bond had been becoming thinner ever since that day that Derek had learned Lockheed could speak. This morning he could feel that their link was entirely blocked. That she had sealed him away from her and he hadn't the strength to break in. The purple dragon despaired at his loss of his loved one, and had gone to find Derek in hopes of being cheered up.

Today, they were just hanging out around the school, chatting when they could without getting caught, and Derek was filling Lockheed in on some of the things that he'd come across in the human world.

Like television.

"There's a lot of rip-offs of that original formula..." he continued. "5 people, each one with a big animal machine, all of which turn into a giant limb of some kind and they all make an even BIGGER bad ass... Ah, here we go..."

"So is that what Sunspot means when he says 'women are like Voltron, the more you put together the better'?" Lockheed asked as he finally came to grips with the connecting robots notion.

Derek doubled over a bit as he laughed, mindful of the fact the he was now a perch. He had to admit, this was his favorite part of explaining things to him. The innocent questions that held more meaning if you were used to humans.

"Well, I think Spot had a different thing in mind..." he chuckled as he gripped the wrench and headed back toward the bathroom.

They turned into Derek's destination, and Lockheed suddenly felt his mind link with Rahne quiver. It didn't reopen, but something changed in a big way. As if Rahne wasn't her anymore. As if she was shoved to one side for something else.

"Derek! Something is Wro-!!"

Suddenly the klaxon was blaring, and Lockheed cringed and fell off Derek's shoulder, clutching his head from the noise as his wings flared and caught him from hitting the ground.

"The main point of those series was that many people could gather together to fight a bi-AHHHH!!!" The siren had caught him off-guard, and immediately his hands went to his ears. Then he realized Lockheed wasn't there anymore and turned to catch him, but it looked like he'd already caught himself.

"Rahne! Derek something is wrong with Rahne!"

The bruised invulnerable immediately pocketed the wrench as his heart began to pound. This siren was different. This noise was the signal that it wasn't a medical emergency calling the med staff to the clinic. Nor was it the call for X-Men to deal with an outburst of an uncontrolled power from an inexperienced student run amok.

This siren was the signal that they were under attack.

From what, he didn't know, nor did he give a shit. He ripped his communicator from his pocket and shouted as loud as he could over the noise of the klaxons.

"What's goin' on!?"

Shit... He waited all of two seconds before turning to the dragon. "What's wrong with Rahne?"

That was when he heard it. A massive choir of shrieks that echoed through the hallway, mingling with the sirens.

"That came from outside!" He shouted.

Lockheed was already winging down the hallway, chasing the feeling of dread that he knew was coming. He wasn't going to worry about outside, he was going to save Rahne.

"She's become a Bug! She's a goddamn Bu- Aaakk!" suddenly he veered to the left sharply, and had to dig his class into the wall for a couple of strides so as not to slam head first into it. His brethren, those Flock who had shunned him so. They were all as Rahne was. And the were full on attacking the compound. And their cries poured forth to him once more in an overwhelming unison of fear pain and anger, devotion to the Queen. Hell, he didn't even have to try and understand them, their thoughts were so clear and overwhelming that he simply had to listen.

"We have to get to the outside!" he called, streaking back the other way to catch up to Derek. "The Flock are attacking, and we have to stop them." But all the while, Lockheed was screaming in his head, tearing at the wall that blocked him from Rahne.

::Rahne! RHAAANEE!! Let me in! You have to fight!::

The Flock... Lockheed's flock!?!?

"Oh... motherfuckin' SHIT!!!

Bruiser still had no idea what was going on... and it didn't matter anymore. Fire-breathing dragons... He had to assume that the attack was coming from outside. And as he reached the doorway leading outside, staring at the massive amount of insects and beasts closing in on them...

"Let's fuckin' DANCE!!!!"

He charged in, confident in his own ability to never get hurt. And confident in his friends' abilities to view, strategize, and adjust. His only ability was that no matter what happened, he'd be okay.

It was time to fight.

One minute the temple was relatively quiet and the next sirens were going off. The creature inhabiting Marrow’s body was free and in the halls being confronted by a few of the X-Men on board. Everett was not a part of that group though. He was outside dealing with the swarm of insects trying to force their way into the temple. As long as he was still breathing, that was not about to happen. A few students panicked and fled, some fought back. Everett dove to the side as one of the creatures swooped down and tried to stab him with its spiked tail. In his current state there was not much he could do other than act as a distraction. If he wasn’t in a place filled with mutants, he would have been in real trouble. Everett grabbed hold of the creature by the tail and slammed it into the hard jungle floor. He stepped down on its neck then twisted until it crunched.

After grabbing hold of Kevin’s aura, Everett’s body began to shift and change under a glow yellow-green fog. Where once a man stood was now a 10 foot tall creature with thick plates covering its back. Jagged, drool tipped teeth jutted from its mouth. Its main set of arms hung low to the ground holding the torso up while the second pair just beneath flexed its deadly claws. The sacks alongside the beast’s head glowed with an orange, fiery light as it prepared to attack. Everett opened his mouth and spat out an orb of acidic energy that collided with a few of the vaguely dragon-shaped insects. The creatures shrieked as the acid quickly burned through their bodies in a matter of seconds. What was left of the bodies fell harmlessly to the ground.

Everett roared like the beast he was before scaling the side of the temple. When he gained the right amount of height, he pushed off right into the thicket of the insects snapping and clawing at every one of them in his path. A few went down; more escaped the monster’s wrath. A few in particular bee lined toward a student that was trying to escape from the deadly swarm. In the girl’s panicked state she was rendered all but useless. Just as the creatures closed in on her they disappeared from one thunderous crack of his tail. Everett turned to face the girl, the acid-containing glands slightly vibrating. :: Hurry, get inside with the others. ::

The girl nodded and ran past Bruiser who was giving the battle his all along with the others. When she was safely away, Everett got back on the offensive and discharged another blast.

Roberto was in the kitchen eating ice cream, across from him sat a misty eyed teenage boy two pretty well sized horns protruding form his forehead...like a ram or sorts. He had seen the kid around before, but with all the stuff that needed to be done around the base, along with his natural self absorbed personality he didn't really bother to get to know the kid. That is until he ran into him crying in the hall. The sight of a big scary looking teenage boy with huge horns growing out of his head, along with a muscle build that looked like he could drag a tractor like it was a toy wagon. Bothered Roberto just enough for him to ask the kid what was wrong.

Normally, Roberto probably would've just walked right past the kid...and do nothing more but make a mental note that a big kid with horns was crying like a baby in the halls. But he didn't really have anything else to do so he figured it wouldn't hurt to play role model for the afternoon. So, after asking the kid what was wrong, and then being told that the kid had been dumped by his girlfriend. Roberto frowned, he could relate to the kid he hadn't talked to Shard in at least a month, and she hadn't been answering his phone calls, or messages. Which only lead him to believe that their relationship was pretty much over.

Being dumped wasn't cool...not even for someone as good looking as Roberto. So he knew it definitely had to suck when you were dumped, and just so happened to look like some sort of weremountain ram. Lord knows what the kid had to pull to get a girl to give him a shot in the first place, much less how he was going to manage to rebound looking like he did. "Anyways like I was saying kid." Roberto said scooping up another spoonful of ice-cream, and putting it into his mouth. "You can't control females, and you damn sure can't understand them. They'll drive you crazy, and make you so angry that you want to bite off your own tongue sometimes." He commented truthfully. "And to make it even worse...you can't live without them." Roberto said to the Ram Kid who only nodded and poked at his ice cream with a spoon.

"But you have to always remember that there's always more fish in the se-" Roberto was cut off by the almost defeaning sound of alarms going off. It was an alarm he had never heard before, and he had heard almost all of them. He had heard the alarm for a out of control kid, the alarm for a dinosaur wandering onto the base, but this alarm was different...it sounded different more sinister, more ominous. Roberto knew that whatever he alarm meant...it couldn't be good.

"What was that?" The Ram Kid asked him sounding confused, and a little frightened. "I don't know...stay here I'll go check it out...if anything happens make sure you get yourself somewhere safe understood?" Roberto said now all business. Roberto was rarely serious, but when he was most of the students knew to listen to him. After all if Roberto was being serious...that meant that something truely sinister had to be going down. Roberto then quickly exited the base. He was completely unprepared for what he saw.

There were alien looking bugs everywhere...to his right there was Derek rushing the attackers. And to his left was not one, but two big scary monsters that seemed to come right out of one of his worst nightmares. Roberto knew that one of them had to be Freakshow...the kid that was so angry, and grumpy that he almost put Marrow to shame. He couldn't tell who the other monster was, but from the looks of it it was on their side because it too was attacking the bugs which were going all over the place, and attacking everything in sight that wasn't one of them. Right in front of him was Skids skating around looking as if she was trying to help...although he knew Skids' forcefield could in theory keep her safe. He didn't like the idea of her being out there...she was just a kid she needed to be somewhere safe.

"Skids GET OUT OF HERE!" Roberto called out in his best authoritative voice, hoping to god that she'd listen to him. The moment the order left his lips he powered up to his solar form. And back handed one of the attacking brood with all of his strength sending it flying back. Roberto then shot a plasma blast at another brood that was attempting to attack Derek from behind. Roberto then flew over to Derek landing right next to him before helping him fight of the attackers. "What in the hell is going on?!" Roberto asked his voice crackling with energy due to him being powered up, even more so in usual due to how worked up he was. He didn't know who, or what the attackers were, but he did know one thing. He wanted those things off lawn, and away from the kids. He had had just about enough of being attacked...they were supposed to be safer here! Roberto's eyes narrowed...they picked the wrong people to attack.

Then, at the horizon it appeared. Once it had been called Pteranodon, but now it was something more. It's frame engorged, eyes and teeth in places neither had business. Tendril whipped two and from from it's back, its wings tattered and torn from its rapid uplifting.

It had received her message, her mental imagery of those cracks the Godling had maid in the temple. It moved fast and with purpose, eyeing for the perfect spot.

It found it with a massive crash. Falling limply against the side of the temple as its brains leaked from it's shattered skull. The stone of the building shifted, In the infrastructure, havoc broke out, sending a shifting tilt to the building. The cracks reappeared and the creature's acid blood began to tear away at the facade, to bore a hole in the structure.

Inside, it began to shake and rumble, those old crack re-emerging before they could full work themselves back into Franklin's new reality

The temple's top visibly leaned, it's stone slide and broken by the creature's kamikaze attack.

At the borders the jungle spewed forth the Queen's forces, their sudden disconnection from their commander irritating them. They would cover her escape and in doing so serve the glory of the Brood.

Dozens upon dozens of them spilled out, some recognizable, others not. Something angry rumbled off in the distance, and its menacing roars could be heard for miles.

Natives, animals, birds, and everything in between poured out to assist the darting aerial creatures.

They all had one intention, one goal. Save the queen. Through this, serve the brood.

Steven felt his entire body shake as he pushed against the foreign swarm of bugs. By then, he had his hands up and was focusing on the tiny bubble that kept the group darting away and screeching before they could lay their tiny mouths on either him or the other people at his side, pushing as hard as he could in his mind.

He could feel them. Every last one of them, screeching and snapping just beyond that bubble, darting in to bite, then keeling back in a fury.

The girl who'd been practicing with her fire earlier stepped away from him then, throwing orbs of flame into the surrounding swarm before he heard familiar voices.

"Let's fuckin' DANCE!!!!"

:: Hurry, get inside with the others. ::

"Skids GET OUT OF HERE!"

He couldn't see anything beyond the thicket of wings that surrounded him, but he knew those voices. The cavalry had arrived. And then came another voice. The girl beside him who was now pushing him back as she continued to shoot flames into the air at their tiny attackers.

"YOU HEARD HIM!!! GET INSIDE!!! NOW!!! NOW!!! NOW!!!"

"What!?!?!?" He glanced over his shoulder at where he thought the temple could be, but he didn't know for certain. He also couldn't really hear her clearly. Everything was being drowned out.

He kept pushing as he slowly stepped back. He had to. He was too scared not to. But then he lost his footing, and the bubble popped as he hit the ground.

He screamed as they washed over him. All the tiny biting mouths of the Brood bugs that had come to answer their Queen. And then a new feeling emerged. More bugs. More bugs swirling around the temple and colliding with the attackers. You couldn't swing a bucket around the temple entrance without catching at least two bucketful.

And all he could think to do was curl up and wait for it to pass.

And Spitfire had always thought things had had the tendency to get messed up around Murderworld…Wow. This was really something else. It hadn’t taken her too long to notice what was going on, then again it was kind of hard to ignore it. An initial priority had been getting the kids to safety before turning tail and leaping into the fray with gusto. It wasn’t that Jac enjoyed fighting or violence, but she was of the opinion that sometimes it was necessary and even inevitable. Still, she had hardly expected to have to fight a host of bizarre creatures, people and several things in between in the middle of a prehistoric jungle, cut off from the rest of the world…then again she hadn’t been expecting the previous fight with the dinosaurs either.

When she managed to get away from her charges, the young Acolyte bolted out of the temple, right into chaos. Jac paused for around half a minute, feeling her stomach flopping over several times. Then, she grabbed a hold of herself; the speedster might have been used to fighting with the likes of Pyro and Amelia, people she had trained and lived beside for years, but being in the midst of X-men did not negate her skills. They didn’t need defending any less.

“Right…” Jac squeezed her lips together tightly and shivered, before making a sudden left turn and pitching into the fray. First, she gained speed, dashing up a wall and allowing herself to flip over ten feet up the surface, coming down feet first on the back of one of the flying monsters. She could feel snapping under her feet as she impacted on to its back at five hundred miles an hour and gravity yanked it to the ground. Jumping off, the zippy blonde bounced off of another, before returning to the wall and running down, dodging and diving around attacks. It was barely scraping the surface however, but Spitfire tried not to think about the end, at least not until it was actually going to happen. It just made things harder to work that way.

Skidding to a halt, Jac saw what was about to happen and her heart seized in her chest. “Bu – fuck, the temple!” all she could do was watch as the barely recognisable creature crashed into the roof and Jac flung herself forwards, grabbing a woman and a young man about her age, dragging them back from the base of the temple. Chunks of rock crashed into the ground near to where they had been stood only seconds later. Letting go, Spitfire felt a shudder run through her body and the young woman closed her eyes. How the hell were they even going…

Well. They weren’t exactly going to be successful if she had thoughts like that.

“Someone needs to stabilise the temple up top,” she yelled out over her comm, not entirely sure if anyone could even hear her with the din, but with luck no one would have to and help would be on its way outside soon anyway. Darting around, she kept kicking and punching and hitting her way through the swarms, grabbing up whatever makeshift weapon she could. God, if only she had her gun…but of course that was back in Sanctuary. But there was no time to mourn her weapons, as the updates she was getting in her ear were sounding increasingly worse.

“Also, anyone not that great at fighting should get anyone who is hurt or too stupid to by themselves, back inside, but away from the infirmary! I repeat, stay away from the infirmary! Severe hostile activity in that area!” Jac yelled, this time a lot louder as she rocketed around, passing students and teachers alike. Some were more than competent to be out there while others were just going to get themselves hurt and this was not the training ground on which to make those mistakes.

Crocodillian jaws snapped at the air, claws cleaving in the wind, the gnats that were the Brood-born creatures sweeping over and through the grounds around the base of the temple. The monster that attacked them back hissed in frustration. Too small. Too fast. He was used to attacking bigger things. Humans weren't nearly as fleet of wing nor were dinosaurs in so greaet a number. Had the monster the facial features to scowl it would, but its bristling quills shivered with annoyance.

Still a bit of a ways from the Utopian temple, the Genoshan roared and bellowed. The children of the Brood Queen snapped at him, darting in for quick attacks, taking small, insignificant bites from his tough hide. Though small, the thick numbers were overwhelming. With a snarl, the Genoshan relented to this swarm of empowered mosquitoes, knuckles digging into the ground, skulking beneath them. The quills along the troll form's body stood on end, thwarting some attacks as he pressed toward the base of the temple.

Overhead, the malformed abomination that was once a winged reptile flew. It soared, larger than the rest, snaking tendrils of writhing meet stretching out from its back. He saw an unnatural eye gazing down at him through the creature's sternum and he followed its path toward the temple. The crash was a lot more dramatic than Kevin would have believed it could have been. The empowered creature slammed its head so hard into a fault in the temple that the stones began to shift. How, Kevin did not know, but the temple's top began to slip. Stones went rolling, some of them bouncing down the temple face toward his peers.

Picking up the pace, the troll craned its head to the side, orange eyes staring into the woods. The trees were moving, countless figures stepping out from beneath their woods. Birds, natives that looked like twisted humans with long, chitinous, bone-like blades for arms. Lesser animals skittered out, the flood of parasite-infected creatures numbering in the dozens. Far off, a long roar pushed through the din. Instinctively, the monster drew in air and released its own in response, a hissing, volatile roar that would have sent the creatures of the air flying away, were they not so infected.

In a fury, Kevin met the Broodlings that walked into the open. The creatures on the ground weren't nearly as impossible to strike as those in the air, a massive swing of his claws flying one of the animals in half. The long jaws lined with crooked teeth wrapped around another, head shaking it violently with a primal sound seething from the monster's throat. A final thrash sent the animal crashing into a tree.

What meat or blood was caught between the cracks of the monster's jagged teeth still writhed against his tongue, and Kevin found the taste encouraging. Bristling quills quivered and he turned toward another Broodling with fresh salivation.

Everett turned another group of insects into ash as more people joined in the battle, one of them an ex-Acolyte of Magneto. As he battled through what seemed like the ninth wave of the flying insects, a student was having trouble dealing with them as they overwhelmed him. Everett roared as he swatted away a few more and ran over to Steven who was curled up on the ground. He skid to a stop, pulled the young mutant close using his shorter pair of arms, and then set free another acidic blast at the swarm that had tried to make a meal of him. Everett dropped him closer to the entrance of the tunnel. :: Stay here with them if you can’t keep it together. :: He did not want a student to be injured on his watch. Just as he was about to rejoin the battle, something large flew overhead and collided with the top of the temple knocking it loose.

Large chunks of debris rained down and Everett braced himself over Steven. The hard plates lining his back cracked the old stones and they fell harmlessly to his sides. He looked up and noted that the beast had done much more damage that he thought. Everett was already in motion when Spitfire called for someone to stabilize the top of the temple to keep it from falling over completely. If that happened, there would be a massive entrance for all of the converts of the jungle to bull rush. He momentarily shifted back into human form and then his body began to change again. This time instead of the acid spitting beast, he shifted into something that resembled a serpent with arms. His face was twisted with mandibles jutting out at different angles surrounding a mouth with only front rows of razor sharp teeth.

He slithered up the side of the temple until he reached the damaged section. The body of the flying beast responsible was tossed into the thicket. His massive body wrapped around the sliding stones and squeezed and squeezed until they were aligned enough. But another hit would be able to knock them right off and this form did not have a cohesive to produce. Once made sure that the pieces would not collapse, Everett unwrapped and swung his tail at the large insects that had flown too close. Once again he had to shift back into human form before he could take on another. But the creatures did not want that to happen. Another pteranodon that had been infected burst through the tree line and went right at him knocking the X-Man off the temple. Everett tumbled through the air at a quick pace. His body slammed into a nearby tree and he felt something crack. As he fell, he crashed through a couple of branches, which slowed the descent thankfully, and finally came to a stop in the mud below.

After lying motionless for what felt like minutes, Everett managed to pull himself up against the base of the tree. Assess the damage: clouded vision, one, no two broken ribs, dislocated shoulder, and a gash over the left brow. At least he was still alive… at least for the moment. There was movement up ahead and it was certainly not one of the others. The altered growl coming from the darkness confirmed that. “Well damn.”

Sally hated taking orders, especially from people she didn't know well. So here she was happily flitting through a war-zone filled with bugs, monsters, X-Men, perhaps explosions, and some crazy glowing guy was yelling at her to leave. As if! She was one of the few that had nothing to fear from all this carnage. So she continued to zip and zoom her way through the battlefield. She couldn't really do too much but when she saw people in need of cover she'd toss herself at their problems, quite literally.

Some battle plan, Sally chided herself. But at least she was helping. She could knock some bugs out of the air, give some students some much needed breathing room, and In general be of some moderate use. Which had the side effect of making the girl quite cheerful and proud. It most likely disturbed a few people to be rescued by a smiling happy go lucky teenager in the middle of a battlefield, but Skids was what she was.

Then it all went to hell. Some twisted freakish thing hit the temple and shattered part of it. With parts of the temple scattering across the grounds, Skids realized two things. First Rusty hadn't been kidding when he said things were real. She had been skating across this fight like it was a game and that had been a mistake. Second and far more importantly, Rusty was in there! Without a further thought the bubble encased girl moved with all possible speed into and about the rubble desperately looking for a flash of fire or a glimpse of red hair.

Superstrength/ Invulnerability/ Not Called Bruiser
Molly Hayes had a knack for getting into trouble, even when she was being kept as far away from trouble as humanly (or mutantly) possible. But, even though she lived in a jungle now and like, not a normal country or anything, the young tyke had quickly picked up that being an X-man or even a student one, meant that you were ALWAYS in some kind of trouble. Thins had been getting really kind of not nice over the past couple of weeks though, and everyone was on edge and scared enough before that day however. She had been in class with everyone else, not really concentrating on what she was supposed to be doing that day.

What she wasn’t supposed to be doing was climbing out on the roof, but she had heard the shouting and heard the rumblings, then really loud booms and bangs, followed by the whole temple shaking, which was pretty scary. But then she had heard Rachel speaking into her head and with a look of utter determination on her face, she had rammed her rabbit hat down tighter, rolled her sleeves up and had bolted for the door.

“Molly! Stop!” Robbie called out after her. Turning at the door, Molly tsked and rolled her eyes.

“D’you wanna make me?!” the girl challenged before bolting out of the room, slamming the door so hard behind her that a crack formed in the wall.

Running as fast as she could, the young girl was able to find her way to the roof. Molly hadn’t been up there much, but she made sure that she remembered the way on her previous viewing trips, in case she ever got the chance to sneak out. It was really pretty, seeing the Savage Land from up high. The temple was not feeling so stable though and wobbling, she burst out on to a terrace on a lower level to look up and see what was happening with her own eyes.

“Freaking…WHATTHEHELL?” her eyes bugged at the sight of the big, mutated monster, several feet above her, sprawled out on the roof. “What the heck is that THING?”

There was no one to answer her, however, and despite what Rachel and Franklin were doing to help, the thing couldn’t stay up there much longer so…Aww, freaking…Why was she out here? Her bottom lip started to wobble a bit but she tried to not look down. She had to be brave. She got the notion that something really bad was going on below from all the shouting and noise and stuff and like…it was scary. But she had run out of the classroom and now she couldn’t really go back and she had to help and be brave cause that was what being an X-man was, right? Or like, Captain America, right? Captain America would be really brave and do stuff here…like get rid of the big thing that was sprawled over the roof, even though it didn’t seem very safe.

Well, she was invulnerable…

Inhaling deeply, she clenched her hands into fists and looked upwards still. She’d seen the Hulk jump plenty of times on TV and people told her that she’d be strong as the Hulk one day so…this would work, right?

Right?

Well, only one way to find out…

Crouching, Molly jumped upwards, screaming as she hurtled up. Using ledges, she managed to scramble up in a series of hops and big jumps before she crashed beside the big monster. Screaming again, she scrabbled up to her feet, and aimed a kick at it.

“GET OFF OF OUR HOUSE!” she screamed, the air around her eyes glowing a very vivid purple. Lashing out, the young bruiser grabbed the monsters tail. Scrunching her eyes closed, her face screwed up in exertion as she gasped, heaving the monster up and around. It weighed a lot more than the dinosaur she’d tossed out of the grounds had and the ground was still unsteady under her feet, but she started to swing around and around, feeling as if her arms were about to tear right out of her sockets before she finally dared to let go.

Ooof!” she gasped, staggering forwards unsteadily as the creature went flying off. What with her trip up there and tossing the thing away, she was crashing and crashing bad.

“Guys…Anyone…I need…a…t…uuuh…”

Wobbling forwards, Molly fell unconscious while still standing, pitching forwards and falling down, right through the skylight set in the roof of the atrium, where she had seen people on her trip up. But she wasn’t thinking about any of that, cause she was too busy sleeping and the only thing going through her head was dreaming of being an X-man. She totally deserved it for this...

Dragon-Like Features
From the moment Derek had screamed a battle cry and had charged off, Lockheed himself had gotten so immersed into attacking these Brood on two fronts that he lost all awareness to his allies activities. He had taken to killing anything he could find a weak spot on. Particularly those that had been his own kind. He could hear the hive mind of the Flock mingling and diminishing to give way to the Brood's similar process, though at varying degrees depending on how quickly each member was turning, and had no remorse ripping out the throats of the Flock. Even after so long, even considering their current circumstances and their own perverse states, both the Brood and the Flock equally wanted to eat Lockheed.

So he flew, dealing death or wounds to what he could as well as trying to be a better lookout, although since he couldn't talk to anyone here but Derek, he took more risks of being mistaken for the enemy to give friends a heads up than he was personally comfortable with. As it was, being the target of a race of dragons and well as their parasite slavers made him have to focus more on attack and riposte. Such as with his current enemy.

This one, who used to be a pink female from his own clan, had grown faster than most, her freakish mix and match appearance nearly six feet in all. She now outweighed and towered over him by nearly three times, and the only thing he has goin for him was that she was slower in the air than he. He darted and redirected and backtracked, usin all his maneuverability to keep her from keeping up while he clawed and bit and burned at her to almost no effect.

She was as fireproof as he, and her chitinous flesh was hard stuff. He made almost no progress except when his claws and teeth caugh between the plates of her skin. He dug in deep just behind her jaw, and practically reigned her in and drove her towards the temple. Seeing a shadow above him, he abandoned his mount and allowed her to slam into the roof just prior to a giant version of the Brood slammed into it as well.

The temple shook, and Locky too assessment of it as he circled, relishing in the momentary reprieve of having no enemies. Here he renewed his attack on the blocks in Rahne's mind somewhere below him inside the temple.

Clawing and flashing against the wall in the mind scapegoat he usually shared with Rahne, Lockheed felt the evil creature that was commandeering his bonded. He ignored it, tryin not to take notice of anything it might try to throw at him. He had briefly hoped that if he caused enough of a ruckus, the Brood would be distracted from its hold on the Scotswoman, and she could regain her control, but he did not linger on that hope. He felt the wall chipping beneath his advances, but it was extremely slow going.

::Come on Rahney! You got to come back to me! Please help me get in, Rahney! Help me in and I'll help to against this evil!::

That was when he saw Molly on the roof of the temple and he ha a feeling that she was t supposed to be there. He swooped around in a wide circle, trying to see whether she had an adult with her of not, but he saw nobody. Then she was flinging the offending Pterodactyl turned Bugger off the temple and falling and Lockheed could do nothing.

::Oh damn! RAHNE! ANYONE! Please somebody! There's a girl falling from the roof!::

He hoped that someone felt him and heard him, but he didn't get a change to fond out as something snagged him from behind.

Wolf Form
{Continued from "MacReady Complex"}

The crimson beam struck true and hard and forcefully, and at just the right angle to send the Broodling careening out of the complex, smashing through the exterior wall and landing in a heap of tangled insect-like limbs on the ground after three graceless bounces on the ground.

Pain... the pain was immense. Damage to the carapace - cracks, tears... non life-threatening. The host healed exceptionally well, so would the Broodling. And before long, she'd molt out of this exoskeleton, grow larger, and a new, fresh carapace would take its place.

"Hnnnnghh," she grunted as she got back to her feet, observing the chaos around them. The lesser Broodlings were engaged in delaying tactics, in occupying the Earth-Natives in combat so that the queen and her elite could escape. She could help her brothers and sisters. She could join the fray and battle the primates and allow her queen the distraction necessary to escape.

But no. Her queen needed her elite by her side. And this young Broodling was one of the elite. She could not sacrifice herself in battle. She had to flee alongside the queen, had to stay by her side.

This reluctance to do battle was not because of lingering emotions. No. She refused to acknowledge that. It wasn't because the host loved her friends and would never wish to inflict harm upon them. No. She was a proud warrior of the Brood now. The host's feelings no longer mattered.

::Muh queen,:: she sounded out along the Brood's hive mind. ::Muh host knows these jungles well, better than any of its companions - we can lose 'em, we can vanish an' they'd nae find us until ye wished them to. If it please ye, my love, I can lead the way.::

***

She kept running, kept fleeing. She knew there was something in pursuit, but she didn't know what.

Suddenly, pain. A flash of red light and pain. Excruciating pain that threw her off of her balance and sent her tumbling down a hill, each bump and crack against the hard ground sending a gasp of pain out of her mouth. She lay in a head on the ground, wheezing in pain. The skittering moved past her. Whatever had struck her had thrown her off of the trail of whatever was chasing her.

It had also cut off what little connection she could make with Dani Moonstar. It was gone.

"Dani?" she whispered, unable to manage more.

No. Get up. This is not it. You have to be strong.

Rahne struggled to her paws, standing on four shaky legs. It hurt. Everything in her hurt. But she could not give in. She was lost, yes. Afraid, yes. Confused, yes. She remembered being in class with her students months ago... or was it days ago? How long...

She remembered being in class, and then she woke up different. Younger. Dependent. Alone.

"This is nae real..." she whispered, realization dawning on her finally. She was... she was not in the real world. She was in the mind. In a mind. Her own? Someone else's? She couldn't tell.

A buzzing in the air - something trying to contact her? It almost sounded like words, almost sounded intelligible. But what?

"Hullo? Is someone there?" she asked, afraid to hear the answer.

[size0]Say the dog and butterfly,
in the air they like to fly.
Dog and butterfly.
She knew she had to try,
and she float back down to the warm soft ground,
laughing - she don't know why,
but she had to try, she had to try.
Dog and Buttefly.
