After It is Not Adversity That Kills

Tessa pulled on the strings of a pair of old Nike running shoes, tightening them and tying them again after they had come loose on her team's run in the direction of the Phase Shift Facility. She had no socks, because she chose to do without instead of pulling the bloody pair that the dead girl had been wearing. The shoes were a little bit big, but they would do for this particular job. She had also scavenged a pair of sweatpants, which was good, since she had just spent the past months wearing nothing but a black bathrobe and her underwear while locked in the Skrull's prison.

Straightening up from tying her shoes back, she looked to her team. There were three X-men, a X-student who looked to be pretty capable, and the White Knight. How exactly she had gotten stuck with so many X-men was beyond her, but at least she had faith that they were all trained for what lay ahead of them.

Tessa took a moment to catch her breath and allowed the others to do so as well. The Skrullos air felt very dry and hard to breath, and the weeks of sitting in a small cell hadn't exactly prepared her for what they were currently attempting. She imagined it was the same for everyone else, but the Skrulls had not fed her well. Her cheeks were gaunt and the details of her skeletal structure were easy to make out through her skin. Not only fat had been lost, but also muscle. She now bore scars all over her body from the tortures that the Skrulls had put her through as they questioned her over some of the Hellfire Club's prized possessions. Despite all of this, she attempted to stand strong in front of the X-men and not put her physical deterioration on display for them to see.

"I need to get there," Sage said to them all, pointing towards the top of a huge tower that was sitting in the middle of a desert area. It was completely dark around it, save a single elevated road that carved through the ocean of sand like a lit serpent. Skrull guards and other military forces were present on the road, battle ready, as if they were preparing to go to war. Upon the top of the tower was a huge energy field, glowing red, and Skrull ships slowly approached and passed through the dimensional gate that the tower was creating. Far beyond the tower in the distance, the glow of another tower could be seen as well.

"Schematics that I downloaded showed me that the entire tower is a giant generator, powering the phase-shifting portal at the top. That portal leads to earth," Tessa explained, just as the roaring engines of a Skrull ship went silent as it disappeared through the gateway. "And they are attacking our people on the other side."

She looked to Bobby, Terry, Rogue and Rho, taking a moment to look each one of them in the eye. For Ken, she knew that she wouldn't have to emphasis that they needed to work together. He would follow her and keep her safe, she had faith in that.

"We have our disagreements," Sage said, her Serbian accent even thicker than usual. "But I think we all can agree that our home is not a place we will allow them to fuck with." It was an unusual thing for Sage to curse. It was a sign of low intelligence. However, in this circumstance, she was sick and tired of the Skrulls.

Sage's eyes took on a faint and eery red glow as she looked the X-men over again. She stopped when she came to Bobby Drake, because the genetic makeup of the Omega leveled mutant was fascinating.

"Robert Drake. Iceman," Sage spat out, recalling his name and codename instantly. She also knew that between all of these X-men, Iceman was not only the most powerful, he was the most experienced. Tessa looked to the others. "Theresa Rourke. Siryn. Dontae King. Rho. And Rogue. I expect none of you to obey my command. I am not Scott Summers. But know this... if you escort me to that tower, I will shut it down. And if I am able to seize control of some of their ships..." She paused, looking up as another Skrull ship flew over in order to approach the gateway. "...who knows what type of destruction I could cause for these bastards?"

"So," Sage turned away from them and began walking towards the tower, heading straight for the road that was lined with Skrull. "Who will help me?"

Sage continued walking, but she extended a hand out towards the Silver Samurai. Only on a few occasions had she heard the King or Queen utter a command to their Knight as the one that she was about to. Never before had she had the power to command a Knight, but for some reason the words came naturally for her, as if she had heard them before.

"Keniuchio Harada," Sage said, walking towards the Skrulls who were along the road. The Skrulls took notice of her approach and raised their weapons, squinting to see the past the light and into the darkness. She looked away from them and back towards the White Knight, pointing towards the Skrulls. "Korosu!" she ordered, which in Japanese means kill.

Keniuchio Harada

Harada had remained by Tessia's side since the prison break. Even though he had agreed to protect the fake Tessia, he would continue to do his duty to the best of his abilities in this strange world, even if it meant that he was unable to return from this world. He had been unable to locate clothing more suitable for combat than he was already wearing so he remained in his white suit. The Skrull weapon he had acquired during the break out was still with him and he was still using it in a manner that it hadn't been designed for.

Looking over the people that had been assigned to working with both himself and Tessia, he wasn't happy having to work with these people, after all it was these people who protected a murderer, luckily for him however none of these X-Men had been present when he had had his run in with them. He didn't have any knowledge of their powers, so he would have to gauge how they fought in battle before he judged who should go where in the squads formation.

Sage then asked who was with her, Harada didn't need to answer she knew he would do his duty dilligantly and without question. His gaze however fell on each of the X-Men waiting to see how each of them reacted to being ordered by someone not of their faction.

Harada's attention turned back to Tessia as she addressed him directly, as she walked towards the Skrull tower, when the Skrulls began to ready their weapons, Harada simply nodded. "Hai, burakkukuīn" which meant yes Black Queen in Japanese. He then focused the tachyonic energy around himself allowing it to spread over both himself and the Skrull weapon, he then broke into a jog to intercept the closest of the Skrull before they could get close to his charge.

Siryn really wanted a shower, or at least the chance to wash her long, red hair properly. Someone once told her that if you didn’t wash your hair for a month or so, it eventually washed itself. So far, her hair was showing little sign of doing anything of the sort. Stood between Dontae and Bobby, she cut a thinner figure of her normal self, having lost weight in the cells and she was thankful for the small mercy of having been there a much shorter time than most of the others. Rocking up on to the balls of her bare feet, she listened to the Hellfire Club member and when the woman was done, the Irish girl shrugged.

“Personally I don’t give a fuck who yer are or yer ain’t. This isn’t about X-men or Hellfire Club or Brotherhood or whatever. This is us against them. We came with yer to do what we could and I reckon Cyclops would be ashamed o’ us if we didn’t follow through now that we were here and did what we could ter win in this messed up fuckin place.”

Looking to the two men either side of her and also Rogue who was also there, she shrugged again and pulled a face somewhat along the lines of I dare you to state differently, before looking back at Sage. “I’m in, though I wouldn’t have come in the first place if I wasn’t.”

Seemed a simple enough job right, see her through all the Skrulls to the tower? Not like she hadn’t taken on crazy sentinels and their swarms of freaky little robot baby spawn…Only those had been robots and while these Skrulls were almost certainly evil wank sacks of crap they were alive and it was now prickling at the vein of her morality about dispatching them without a second thought. Maybe she’d actually drag her sorry arse to confession once she got back home. Bless me Father, for I have sinned…it has been over eighteen months since my last confession…hope yer sittin on a good cushion…

If she had sleeves, Siryn would be rolling them up, instead she took a breath and punching out a scream, rose up from the ground; being airborne meant she didn’t exactly care she hadn’t found a pair of suitable shoes that fit her yet (the last pair had fallen off earlier in the day and smacked a Skrull in the face). What she had managed to improvise was a pair of glider wings that was basically tarpaulin and some string, but it did the job and helped her keep her balance and that was good enough for her.

He was young and hopeful, but not dumb and naive. Rho knew they couldn't save everybody. The Skrulls had simply taken too many and would be on some before they'd even gotten ten feet from their cell. He'd worked his ass off to save who he could though, and now they had a sizable group and were splitting off into smaller squads to take the fight to the Skrulls. Good day all things considering. He wanted to team up with Jimmy, but they were all doing what they could do the best, and what he could do was help mess up the tech the Skrulls were using to get to Earth and invade it. Besides, he was with Bobby, Terry, and Rogue.

He had people he could trust watching his six, and he was watching theirs. The Hellfire people weren't too bad he supposed, but they had swayed Jay to the Mauve side with their promises of three piece suits, gourmet cheeses, and sexy time everyday at 3pm. Still, Sage was leading this mission, so he'd do what she told him as long as it wasn't stupid or self sacrificing for no reason. He could see that Sage was far from her usual; they all were. And while she did a good job concealing it for the most part; he'd grown up around junkies and addicts and people who were just hungry...she fit the bill too perfectly for him not to notice.

He let out a low whistle when she pointed to the tower; they needed to get to that? Well at least it wasn't guarded by giant robots, so that was a plus. The tower was a marvel; had ships going in and out, and had a decent contingent of Skrulls guarding it. They really didn't want them getting to it, but now they just had to...it was human nature. He listened as she called their names and codenames out, asked them to help her; even tried to convince them that they had to work together to make this work.

Terry spoke up before him, and he nodded his head in agreement. "What she said;" he spoke up as he pointed his thumb at his friend and teammate. " Way I see it; we're mutants...they're Skrulls. Plain and simple. They took us from our planet, experimented on us, took our places back on Earth and now they're tryin' to take it over or Annex it or whatever crazy shit they're planning."

He crossed his arms and gestured with his head towards the gathered Skrull down starting to notice them and preparing. "Now I don't think I'm alone in sayin' I'd like a little payback, and if followin orders from one of you Illuminati, rule the world from behind the scenes types is the way to do it...fine by me. Just tell me what to punch." Sage gave the Japanese guy an order in Japanese, and he took off towards the Skrull's. Siryn took to the air after that, and he figured it was game on.

Grinning, he rushed forward, feet barely skimming the ground and kicking up dust behind him in a beeline for the nearest vehicle. A surge of energy hit where he'd been just a second ago and he sped up, then he rammed his shoulder into the vehicle, crumpling it into scrap. Getting a grip on the remains, he spun and threw it towards another, then sent a Skrull warrior sailing over his friends.

Bobby still wasn’t all there. But he followed Rogue, Rho, and Terry, with the Hellfire chick leading. She pointed to where she wanted to go and Rho whistled in response. The icy mutant stared up at it while she spoke about disagreements. It made no sense to him to be honest.

If this was real and they were all captors, would they all just come together? Just like when they had to deal with Apocalypse. He snapped out of it and directed her gaze back to the Hellfire chick when she said his name. Then she addressed everyone else. She told them that she wasn’t Scott and Bobby couldn’t help but think that it was because she was a Hellfire member and a lady.

While Scott was an X-Man and a dude. She promised that if they helped her to that tower, she would destroy it and threw out the question of what kind of destruction she could cause. After asking them who’d help Rho and Terry said they would. The Iceman hiked his thumb both ways and spoke quickly, “Ditto.” The horde of Skrulls advanced.

It made Bobby wince a little, but he shrugged it off when Sage said something to the Asian guy in a foreign language. Everyone started to move. Terry to the sky, and Rho to the Skrulls. He walked casually towards Sage and nodded, “It’d be a bit cold but this is a dream so you’d be okay…” He stated plainly as if he was asking about the weather.

“Need a ride up to the top?” He absentmindedly pointed upwards towards the tower. He shrugged, and thought of how he’d love some water right then. It was all still not real to him. But the Iceman wanted Scott to be proud of him, even if it wasn’t real.

Sage kept walking forward at a steady pace as the X-men and the White Knight moved past her. The Skrulls opened fire, as was expected, but they mostly focused on the ones that rushed towards them. The night lit up with energy blasts as they came streaming from the Skrulls weapons and Tessa paused her march forward as Bobby Drake walked up beside her as if it was a pleasant walk in the park. The Black Queen turned her head and looked him over as he spoke and it was obvious to her that he was either shell shocked or possibly he had been driven mildly insane by his time sitting in a small cell.

"Fortunately I do not need to reach the top. Schematics show that..." Sage paused as Skrull gunfire came dangerously close to them, turning her head to look at the battle. Perhaps a frontal assault was not so wise with such a small group, but with their particular skills she felt that they were up for the challenge. That is, at least, if Iceman would become a participant in the battle. She cleared her throat and continued, also feeling the need for a drink. "Schematics that I downloaded within the prison show that there is a entrance at the base of the tower that will give me all the access that I need to shut it down. Forgive me for showing concern but are you alright?"

Even as she said those words, bright lights flared from an above warship. A loud crackling noise could be heard and it grew closer at lightning speeds. In a blink, the Skrull warship above had fired one of it's large caliber energy based rail guns down upon their team and it's first shot struck about a hundred feet away from Sage and Iceman. The suddenly explosion lit up the sky and sent Tessa sprawling through the air, landing face first in the sand and sliding along it until she came to a stop.

Dazed, Tessa pushed herself up on all fours and then fell over onto her backside, looking up towards the warship as it's weapons began to glow in preparation for another shot. With no idea with what happened to Iceman but hoping that he was still close by, she raised a bloodied hand and waved it up towards the ship. "Iceman," her voice cracked and she spit out a mouthful of sand. "Stop that thing! Bring it down!" she yelled out, her ears ringing and making it near impossible for her to tell how loud she was speaking. Even if Bobby didn't think he could do such a thing, Sage knew that he could. In this case, he had to or one of them could be killed.

She got up quickly off of the ground and saw stars and for a moment, the limited strength that she possessed wavered causing her legs to give way. She fell to the ground, but instead of giving in, Sage shook her head and sent sand flying about. Gritting her teeth in anger through the pain, she got back to her feet and ran forward towards the battle, probably looking like a maniac in the process.

Filthy, bloody and wearing a bathrobe, Sage gave way to her mutation and allowed her computerized mind to determine her next few actions. Running to where Harada was currently fighting, she blindsided a Skrull that was focused on him and tackled it to the ground. The Skrull immediately rolled over and attempted to elbow her in the head, but since her mind was capable of processing things many times faster than other's, she saw it coming. Sitting on the Skrull in a side-mount, she extended both arms and blocked the blow with both hands. Tessa then laid down upon the Skrull, who was much more powerful than she was, and moved her right arm under his arm while her left arm went around his neck. Sliding around onto the Skrull's back, she latched both legs around his waste and began choking the Skrull. Arching her back, it only took seconds to accomplish and the Skrull went limp in her arms. Apparently they weren't fluent in MMA.

Tessa shoved the Skrull off of her and then reached over to it's rifle, picking up and assuming control over it's advanced technology. She then looked to Harada and the others, who probably would have taken down quite a few in the time it took her to take down one, and wiped away a combination of sweat and blood from her brow. Hoping that Bobby was taking care of the threat above, she raised a hand up and motioned towards the tower, which still had plenty of Skrull between it and themselves.

"Punch them all, Rho... every single one," she stated, her throat still raw, but she managed to spit it out. Raising her newly acquired rifle, she walked forward, attempting to stay behind any cover that the road provided and to allow Rho and others who were more physically capable to move on ahead.

When Sage told him that she didn’t need to reach the top, the battle in the background kept interrupting her, which was very very rude. In the end, it was something with something that she had to do that only reached at the base of the tower. Bobby nodded casually. She asked for forgiveness for the concern and asked if he was alright.

As the bright light from the warship shown and the crackling was heard he responded, “Generally-“ Before he could even finish his answer the warship fired their weapon. Sending both Sage and the iced mutant flying. He groaned, ”Damn… that hurt like hell.” This was such a painful dream. He held his side where he landed as he tried to roll on his other side to get up.

He looked over to Sage and saw she was pretty beat up from the explosion. It was only then that Bobby felt something on his forehead. It wasn’t thick and moved down his forehead and a stinging pain accompanied it. He reached up to touch his head and ended up wincing. When he looked at his hand he saw blood. Looking towards Sage when she called for him and told him to stop the warship and bring it down.

His face was covered in sand and his own blood. Sage got up to move forward. His body radiated with pain. “Dreams don’t hurt…” Holy shit. Maybe this was real. He shook his head, it only hurt his head more. Sage told him to stop the warship. He looked up at it as it whirred and whizzed. He stood shakily to his feet and glance at the battle.

These people were counting on him. And he was letting them down. It was hard to tell left from right but up was down and it was time to move. He looked up at the warship and for the first time in nearly a year Robert Drake reverted to full on ice form. Dream or no, it was no more Mr. Nice Ice Guy. He stretched out his hand and couldn’t help but be momentarily distracted with his icy blue hand.

He shook his head again, only to remember the pain from the hit his head took. The Iceman froze a small area and stepped onto it. Once he was on the ice he raised himself, higher and higher. Reaching up towards the windows of the warship. The Skrull were scrambling about from within. Bobby knocked on the glass, and all the Skrulls stopped still to look at the window.

With his icy face he spoke up loud for them to hear him, “Stop shooting at us!” With his words they scrambled about to try and deal with the situation that knocked on their window. The iced mutant gave a quizzical look. “Hey! You’re not listening!” When they pressed on even more frantic than before, he sighed and placed his hand against the window.

He hopped on top of the war ship using his hand to help him up. As he walked along the top of the war ship, he tried to look for something to freeze to bring it down. Bobby sat on the top of the war ship and placed his hands on either side. He sat there to think, but his hands on the war ship spread the ice. The ice left his hands and spread along the ship, working through the mechanics, the fire, the heat, everything.

The Skrulls within were trying to figure out what was wrong, shouting at one another, they were also starting to get cold. The inner workings of the war ship were freezing over, frosting the windows and shutting everything down. The Iceman didn’t realize it, but he was taking down a Skrull War Ship, all with his hands. The ship started to sputter out horrible noises and shake in a not so good way.

“I’ve got a baad feeling about this…” The ship started to plummet to the ground, Bobby quickly scrambled to his feet. “Houston, we’re goin down!” He tried to get his balance, but it wasn’t helping much. “Mayday mayday, I’m abandoning ship Cap’in!” He was talking to no one in particular, he wasn’t even sure if he was really talking out loud.

He ran the opposite direction of where the ship was crashing. He jumped off and held out his hand, but started to fall instead of catching himself on a beam of ice. “Ice up, ice up, ICE UP!!” It wasn’t working. He kicked his legs as if he was running; he was getting closer to the ground. “Okay! IT’S REAL! I’m not dreaming now ICE UP!”

God this had to be the longest fall he’s ever had. If this was a dream, once he’d hit the ground, he’d wake up. But if it was real, he’d die. When it came to that risk, Bobby wasn’t going to chance it. Suddenly the ice formed in front of him to make a beam. He slid on his ice all the way down to the ground, barely making it in time for him to dodge a fallen death and a crashing war ship.

When it crashed, he turned to look at it, “Okay I know you’re supposed to walk away from an explosion and not look at it… but that’s stupid. That was badass to look at. Video woulda been cool...” He shrugged and looked back towards the battle. He nodded and smiled in his ice form walking away from the fiery mess behind him, “I’m badass…” Stating it matter of factly.

Bobby was working very hard to continue convincing himself that this was not a dream.

Before Theresa took to the air proper, she cast a quick glance towards Iceman and bit down on her lip, then faced forwards and took to the sky. She was worried about him, but she couldn’t let that get in the way of the task at hand, at least not immediately otherwise she’d only go and get herself shot or something and then be no use at all. Lord only knew what had happened to Bobby in the prison and in many ways, Siryn didn’t want to find out. But the way he was acting…was it shock or something? Whatever it was, it was something a professional would probably have to talk to the man about and despite her lion’s share of predominantly family issues, she was no expert.

The best thing she could do at a time like this was as she was told. Taking to the air with a scream, she boosted herself as high as she could, while still able to aim beneath her and damage people on the ground. People? That was a thought that made her shudder...Did skrulls count as people? Though back home, there were some who thought that mutants didn’t count as people either. It was a chilling thought and not one she wanted to be struggling with internally while trying to fight.

Wheeling overhead, she aimed a concenrated scream at a skrull that was about to pounce Bobby, knocking the beast back to the ground. That done, she turned back upwards to get a better view of things, when a small craft shot toowards her, like some kind of strange flying chariot. Swearing loudly, Siryn swerved and rolled, almost falling out of the air as she found it hard to get her balance back. Dipping in the air, she came up behind and flew directly at the pilot, punching them as she soared past, not because she could knock one out of the sky but it made her feel better. In any case, it made the thing swerve unsteadily long enough for Theresa to punch a scream through the side of the craft as she pulled away and dropped downwards once more.

Heading back to the ground, the redhead alighted heavily beside Sage and wiped a hand over her brow, looking at the Hellfire woman. “It’s fuckin chaos,” the Irish teenager bluntly stated the obvious. “This had better work, lady. I can cover yer from the air but I’m kind’ve on me own up there right now...” shielding her eyes, she looked upwards, grim faced. Somehow, this was almost as bad as fighting sentinels...

He was the strongest person there, and the fastest; and with clever applications of his powers, he'd basically become a super powered battering ram, pinballing from Skrull to Skrull to vehicle and back to his people when they needed it. He didn't stop an explosion from one of the airships from knocking Sage and Bobby for a loop, but before he could handle it, Bobby stepped up and iced the whole thing. It was pretty cool. When it crashed, Bobby calmly walked away from the icy wreckage consumed by a raging inferno; still with the delusions? He flew over, punching a Skrull's head 180 degrees as he did so, then slid to a stop in front of him.

"Iceman, this is really happening!! We're fighting for our lives to stop green aliens from killing us and taking over our planet; so head in the game please?!" He hoped his short and terse words were enough to shake him from his stupor; if not then it fell on himself and the others to pick up the slack...just great. He wasn't a tactician, and would laugh if his name was even mentioned in the same sentence as someone like Cyclops, or someone like that, but he could think on the fly and adapt to situations pretty well. He knew since he was doing the most damage, he could get enough attention focused on him it would take the heat off the others; the only problem being he had that much more to worry about.

He didn't give it a second thought though, as two of the mutants fighting alongside him were good friends, and even though the other two were bad or bad-ish, they were still humans and in this thing with him against the Skrulls. He'd do his damndest for all of them. Slowly working his way back to Sage and the others while trying to keep the firepower off of them, he was taken off guard by a blast from one of the ground vehicles. He was moving as he got hit, so he was blasted back through the air, smoking and rolling to a stop at the girls feet. He moaned as he stood shakily and got his bearings.

"Ow; that hurt." He cleared the cobwebs and stars from his vision as his density rose; he couldn't afford being taken down by trying to be conservative at a time like this. He looked over at Terry and nodded his head as he chimed in. "She's right; we're outnumbered and with Iceman still on the fritz, we're nowhere near our A game. We need to hurry this up before we get swarmed." One of the airships did a passing strafe run and dropped some bombs a bit too close for comfort, causing him to turn to Terry. "Whatever support you need up there, you got it. Just holler." He grinned in the face of danger at his friend and took off into the sky, ramming through the aircraft that had fired at them before and was swinging back for another pass.

"Rho, that's enough. We are doing fine," Tessa said, planting her back against some cover as some Skrulls on the bridge fired a volley of blasts in their direction. She looked around at the others, who had regrouped near her after the Skrull ship had crashed. "Everyone is doing great. See that opening at the base of the tower?" she asked, motioning with her hand in the direction of the tower. They had gotten closer, but still had a little ways to go.

"We are going to split up and make it there. Once I get inside, you will all have keep the entrance clear for... well, I don't know how long it will take. It didn't take me wrong to override the alarms in the prison, but I am willing to be that this will be better protected," Sage said, doing her best to come up with a solid plan. She nodded at Rho as he said he would help in the sky. "You both make your way up and cover us from above.. Ken, come with me and we will make our way along this bridge. Only take out targets that we have to in order to reach our objective. And Bobby, do what you can to draw them away from the bridge to lighten the resistance for the rest of us... just... give them hell. Everyone, give them hell. Let's make them regret taking us."

Sage peeked around the corner of the stone barrier that she was standing behind and the Skrulls down the bridge immediately opened fire. She glanced back towards the team and nodded once and said, "Might as well go now. No sense in standing here all day."

She motioned to the White Knight to proceed and after he went into the fray, she followed behind him, ducking behind cover and also using Ken's shield to assist her progress forward. The going was slow but steady, and she made her way closer and closer to the door. From behind a Skrull vehicle that she was using for cover, Sage stuck her head up and looked to Ken, motioning for him to go left and draw some of the resistance that way. Hopefully the others were doing the same, keeping the Skrull occupied enough to not notice her sneaking to the right.

Ducking and weaving her way through cover, Sage found herself near the door. She was also behind the Skrull lines, with Skrull both behind her and in front of her. So far, they hadn't noticed her and they continued to put up a fight with her team. Tessa took a deep breath and moved again, half crawling to another Skrull vehicle that was positioned on the bridge. The massive guns on the vehicle fired several times into the sky and she could only assume that they were firing at Terry, Rho, or Iceman. Maybe she could shut the vehicle down?

As the thought crossed her mind, two Skrulls walked around the corner of the tank-like vehicle and spotted her. One of them raised their rifle at her while the other jumped forward and threw a kick at her face. Luckily she turned her head, which caused the Skrulls boot to glance across her face instead of hitting it full contact. Still, it did it's job and she fell to the ground, busting both of her lips open as she faceplanted on the bridge.

"Ken," she attempted to yell out for the Knight, but he was too far from her position and her voice came out as a croak.

The Skrull stood over her and with it's boot, he half-kicked and half-pushed her over onto her back. The green being grinned down at her and raised it's rifle, pointing it right to her head. "<Now you die, mutant,>" it said, and the rifle in it's hand lit up green as a concussive blast was shot out of the barrel.

"No!" Sage yelled out, rolling out of the way just enough so that the shot struck the ground next to her head. Debris shot out of the ground, cutting into her back, but survival was more important than worrying about the pain. She rolled back the other way and reached up, grabbing the Skrull's rifle.

The Skrull fired several more times with Sage holding onto the weapon, causing the shots to go off target. Finally he lifted the rifle upwards, picking Sage up until she was in a standing position. He then punched her across the face, sending her barreling into the tank. Then both Skrulls raised their rifles in preparation to fire.

For a moment, her vision went dark, but she was aware enough to put her hands up to stop herself from hitting the tank full force. Sage crumpled against the vehicle and readied herself to be shot in the back, but then she noticed something next to her right hand. It looked to be a grouping of wires that fed into the tank, probably supporting one of it's guidance systems or something of that nature. She moved her hand slightly until she touched those wires and instantly, the tank stopped it's constant firing.

The massive guns that had been aimed towards the sky suddenly swung around, coming close to hitting Sage in the head, but when they stopped moving, both barrels of the massive weapon were aimed point blank at the two Skrulls. Both of them screamed and attempted to move, but the tank fired quickly. The result was two Skrulls exploding violently, causing it to temporarily rain green goop in the surrounding area.

Sage let out a sigh of relief and leaned upon the tank. Then as she rested her physical body, the tank went to work, shooting rapidly onto the bridge and taking out the Skrulls by the dozen. It fired unnaturally, guided by a mind that would move faster than the Skrulls could maneuver, and after just a few seconds she had cleared a path so that Ken and any of the others could reach her position. It wouldn't take much longer and they would reach the door... then she could shut this gateway down.
