May 22nd 8:00am Ra's simply didn't understand the pomp and flair that the man he was impersonating, Doctor James Nicola Bradley, loved to indulge in. The white suits, the ridiculous behavior. As a fellow scientist, he didn't see the reasoning for any of it; maybe the man's mutation had something to do with it. It didn't matter, he was up here to put into motion a brilliant plan he'd deduced over the past 48 hours since his people had made their presence known to the world. A broadcast signal. Imperceptible and theoretically untraceable since it ran through so many antenna, radio dishes and satellites to a scan proof location only he knew. The idea was that the signal would gradually bring the humans around to the Skrulls way of thinking. Make them more compliant and at ease around the big bad invaders. Of course he could have boosted the signal's strength considerably, but to those who weren't affected as fast as others, they would recognize something was wrong. He couldn't have that, so he kept it subtle, yet effective. Of course, something of this magnitude needed to be authorized, and only one person could do that, so before he pressed the button to get things underway, he had a call to make. He'd brought the holo-transmitter so he could be there in as close to person as possible. He watched the confirmation light blink several times before staying solid, signifying that he was indeed connected and the holographic representation of his form could be seen and heard on the other end of the line. The first thing he did was bow his head and drop to one knee. "My Queen." After kneeling for the required amount of time, he stood up and crossed his arms behind his back. "My lady, you know me as Ra's, and I have an idea to make this operation run much more smoothly, with your permission of course. A radio signal that will be broadcast far and wide across this city and this world. It will make the humans come to trust our words; make them agree with our way of thinking. It will make this takeover that much easier. But as I said, I wouldn't dare undertake anything so immense without your permission." |

It's Good to be the Queen
|
It was not how things should be, Veranke, the Queen of the Skrull, thought to herself as she stared out her window at the fleet that hovered above the city. She remembered being so much younger, hardly more than a neonate, accusing King Dorrek of failing their people, of not heeding the prophecies in the Old Men's books. The world on the other side of the phase should have been theirs so long ago, and even as a hatchling she had known that some day it would she and she alone who lead them. She was not a princess then, because such titles were meaningless. There was only the King if the ruler was male, the Queen if she was female. Veranke had ambition, and cunning, and those were things that her sect was not allowed. But see where she had lead them. See what she had accomplished. There was still opposition though, those troublesome superpowered fools who struggled to hurt her soldiers, foil her plans. They didn't know the half of their trouble, did they, those silly little primates. Oh, they had put up a good fight, and she had lost good men. But she would use all of her armies and their stolen powers to crack this planet in half rather than be wrong. She was told that one of her men was here and she allowed him to enter, casting a critical eye at the form he was adopting, "My, but they are an ugly species, aren't they? You must have good reason to risk discovery by coming here. Rise, brother, and tell me what is it you feel is so important that you have to tell me in person." And he did, in an arrogant way that both fascinated and irritated her, but what he said was truly innovative and unique. Could this truly work? She leaned her ridged chin on her fist and said, "You propose to brainwash a planet? Would this include those fools with their so called superpowers? Would we own this world's heroes?" She leaned close to Ra's and said, "Do you know why I chose this form, brother, this frail human woman, neither mutant nor mutate? Because there is a greater power than that which is physical, the ability to fly or read minds. Those things mean nothing in comparison to the power I hold. But to have them to worship me, to kneel before me and think of nothing but what it is I want, how they can serve me? That is great power indeed." |

Ra's smiled and inclined his head while she took in and insulted the form he wore. Truth be told he was less fond of it than she herself; she didn't have to walk around all day wearing the damn thing. Personal qualms aside, he couldn't complain about the usefulness he got from the form of Doctor Nemesis. With Hartley's death, "he" ran all of X-Corp. That combined with the considerable wealth and resources the good doctor already possessed on his own made for a rather comfortable work and home environment for Ra's to plot dastardly schemes and think the really complex thoughts so his brethren could be soldiers. "Ugly they might be;" he said as he stood to his feet, but they make the most delightful sound when they hit the ground after falling ten stories. And I would not risk so much unless we had so much more to gain, my lady." After he told her his plan, he stood silent and alert, waiting for her reaction. Would she say yes, would she think about it? Would she outright refuse, citing fool and folly? He had hopes for the best, but was already prepared to finish preparations on another operation should she deny this one. She questioned the possibility of what he was proposing, and his smiled widened. "I do. It does. And...we will. The human brain is a fascinating and powerful thing; but like any organ...any computer. It can be manipulated and exploited by one who knows what buttons to press. This signal will press those buttons and the humans will come to see things our way; all of the humans." He said all and meant all, but there would always be radical impurities and some people would remain free. Maybe one of the mutants with advanced brain chemistry or who existed as energy. They would be such a frighteningly small minority though that it wouldn't matter. Of course, this would remain knowledge only he knew. It was a good plan, an excellent one; he couldn't risk increasing the chances of the Queen saying no. As the Queen leaned closer to him, he had to remind himself to remain calm, yet alert. She was the supreme authority of his people, but despite that she was still naturally female and quite attractive. Wandering eyes had gotten many a man in trouble though, so his remained focused. He chuckled when she asked, then explained why she'd taken the form she had. Much like his own form, it was a brilliant gambit; cementing ones self in a position of power and influence; a position where people wouldn't dare to ask questions. He chuckled at the sheer brilliance and simplicity of it all, nodding his head when she alluded to the fact that with his plan in place, she would not only rule...she would be adored by an entire planet like some sort of patron saint or deity given physical form. "A great power that will be yours and only yours, my lady. The annals of history may need to be made larger to hold all the deeds you will accomplish." |

"Ra's, you flatter me," Veranke smiled, at his calls for her great deeds. "You're not incorrect, but you do indeed flatter, and that shows me two things about you. One, that you are intelligent enough to know where your bread is buttered to use human expression, and two, that you're ambitious enough to think about keeping your head on your neck. I personally selected skrull of strong characteristics to follow me on what the Old Ones called my 'folly,' and you have all served me so well. I think that this world might as well have a pretty bow atop it, tied in ribbon a hundred miles across." She leaned back in her chair, smoothing her dark hair, and resting her chin in her hand to contemplate Ra's thoughtfully and greedily, like she was imagining eating him up with a spoon. "The one you've replaced, tell me about him. What skills does he have that you are going to use to put this plan in motion. Dr. James Bradley, is it?" she tapped several keys on her keyboard, and high level things opened for her, "He has quite the unique history, at least what I can find of it. A man like this, I hope our scientists back home are taking advantage of his presence in our midst. Imagine what we could learn from someone like this." Clenching her green fist, she said, "We were Nuwali once, soft and weak, but with minds, our scientific genius should be understood, it should be feared. Make your plans, Ra's, make your plans and what comes of this... well, if it works we may have just gone from Conquerors to deities, and I have to say, I do like the idea of humanity kneeling at my feet. It plays so well into my delusions of godhood." Glaring at Nemesis in the sudden silence, Veranke said, "That was a joke, Ra's, you may laugh." |

He accepted the sweet nothings and Veranke's self praise with a gracious smile, as it meant that she wasn't finding some reason to be displeased with him, and that was a very good thing. When she said those few kinds words about him though, it made him glad he'd been able to serve dutifully and faithfully so far. He just hoped he would be able to continue to do so. "Well my queen, some are too smart for their own good, and some are smart enough to not push their luck. I will do all I can to serve and more, but my utmost goal is to not displease you. As for the bow; give me a bit of time to get the resources and manpower together...then you can pick out a color." He remained silent while she looked up the scraps of information that James had let slip over the last century. He knew she wouldn't find much. "Name, James Nicola Bradley. Born in 1905. His mutant powers developed during puberty like a large percentage of their kind. His powers are...varied and unique, though like you say, much better suited to a laboratory than a battlefield. He possesses a hyper-evolved intellect and accurately believes himself to be one of the top 5 smartest beings on the planet. He's used that intellect to build a vast shadow empire that generates ludicrous amounts of Earth currency, as well as allow him to operate a network of proxies and informants who keep him up to date on the most important matters worldwide. And after Hartley's...unfortunate fall out that building; he inherited leadership of X-Corps. An organization dedicated to;" he stopped and snickered as he still found the concept laughable. "Helping people in need." He sneered when she brought up the Nuwali; it sickened him to even think of that race of lesser beings. But he knew his place was not to add to something she'd already said, so he kept his mouth shut until she stopped talking, then stared into what felt like his very soul. He laughed. |
