They might have been ready to die for their cause and more than willing to kill, but the Skrulls weren't as stupid as he thought. That was why he still saw soldiers and pilots scrambling away from the energy distortions in the air whenever he aimed his powers their way. It was okay though, because they were going exactly where he wanted, being herded like cattle to the slaughterhouse where a majority of them could be decimated in one fell swoop. One group of Skrulls were unlucky enough to come across the Shroud, and through the creative use of his portals, directly into the path of one of his blasts. Gore rained down on the battlefield and it made him snicker.

Jason's holographic monstrosities along with his powers penned more and more of the Skrulls into the chokepoint, and getting out was not an option once you were in; he made sure of that. He looked to the rock surrounding the killing field, then to the ground it was comprised of. Destroying both at the same time would do quite nicely. He hadn't acknowledged it until now, but he felt a strange power inside him; it was like he was a force of nature given form. He could sense, could "see" everyone and everything connected to the Earth; all the weaknesses and stress points.

It was so much more detailed than normal...he felt; knew that he could shake this planet to rubble if he so chose. After a good number had been trapped, Jason commented on him doing what he did best and burying them under tons of rubble. "Give it a bit more time, my friend. The net is not yet full." He was biding his time, continuing to let the Skrulls think something was happening that was not. Soon though, very soon he would plunge them into death and darkness. A familiar person was sensed coming up behind him, and he looked over his shoulder with a smile on his face even as he punched a hole through one of the larger ships in the sky.

It was Fracture, his fellow earth mover and had been Skrull captive. "I'd imagine it would be, my brother. You've been here for some time...and among such dreadful company." He sensed the Skrull trying to come up behind him, but he didn't even worry as Fracture took care of him. "I'll do more than burst heads, just sit back and watch the show." Seeing a group of Skrull chasing down an elderly looking woman escorting a group of child mutants, he raised his foot and brought it down hard on the Earth, his powers ripping open a chasm in the ground that led the Skrulls to their doom. It sealed itself moments later then he turned back to Fracture. "We're here to rescue you and get you back to Earth. All of you," he gestured towards the entire battlefield filled with mutants and people who just wanted to get home. Looking back down and seeing that the soon to be landfill was nearly full, he smiled at both Jason and Lucian.

"Fracture, this is Mastermind, and he has just helped me pull off one of the most devastating feint and destroy moves in human or alien history." Stepping in front of both of them, he searched out Betsy's mind, knowing they were all linked through her. ::I highly suggest anyone on the ground brace themselves; this is going to get very, very rough.:: Reaching into himself, he drew on power he usually kept contained, for it had nearly broken the Serengeti when it was originally unleashed all those years ago.

His eyes shone like red beacons of raw power, and then the planet began to tremble. It started subtly, but suddenly shockwaves ripped through Skrullos for miles in every direction, knocking anyone without the strength to resist to their knees. The brunt of his power was directed at the rock on top of the Skrulls and the Earth below them. It fractured and broke, causing portions to fall all around them and crush them to nothingness. And even as chunks of stone were crushing them from above, the ground below them began to give away as well, opening into a bottomless pit. "Check...and mate." Leaving them to their fate, he started making his way back to the portal. He was tired of this dreary place.

Since their escape from Skrull prison, Bobby's personal solitary hell, the icy mutant kept mostly to himself. No longer thinking that it was a dream but upgraded the escape as a happy delusion. He half expected to blink and be back in the heated enclosed cell the Skrulls kept him in. He asked no questions, mainly because of how the other would look at him sometimes.

Pity, sorrow, they knew more than he did. It was that age old saying that clung to his mind, 'if you don't like the answers, don't ask the questions'. And the answers terrified him. Another reason he kept to himself was that his power was trying to make up for the year it was held back. Bobby's skin was tinted a shade of blue, with frost forming in all different parts of his body.

If someone were to put their hand through his hair small chunks of frost and ice would flick off. If someone ran a finger over his skin frost would be pushed aside like a frozen drink. Suddenly noise, a lot of noise. Back up was there. The Iceman raised his head like a puppy that heard his name. He stood up and followed the other out of their hiding spots and saw that a savior was found with Hellfire.

"Well that's ironic. Is it?" He paused to think about it for a moment. But shook off the thinking. Maybe it was the partial Catholic upbringing that made him have the delusion of the Hellfire rescue. But then, no. No he had to think. Bobby was still so confused on what exactly all of that was. If the escape and rescue was even real or not.

He didn't feel hot anymore, he hadn't since the escape from the prison. Maybe he should just admit that it was all real, and not in his head. Bobby just didn't know if his heart could take the rescue to be a fake. Cut off from everyone and everything. From the chill and cold. But then everyone, almost, was right there with him, trying to urge him, trying to shake him awake.

Persistent for delusions and dreams, too persistent. The ground shook and quaked and the Iceman looked to his hands, they were already frozen solid into ice. "Huh, when'd that happen?" During his train of thoughts his power increased, and now that he was aware of it he could feel it. Suddenly the type of dream were he wasn't strong enough, was crushed.

The delusion of escape from a heated prison became real with the shimmer of his icy hands. He was stronger, Bobby didn't know how but he was. He could feel it. Not like when he was on KICK, this was real and it was all him. He took in a deep breath and exhaled heavily with a puff of condensation swirling in the air from his iced lips. The Iceman smiled.

The air chilled, and perfect flakes of snow started to fall. He didn't mean for it to start snowing, but he couldn't help the thoughts of seeing the winter season again. Suddenly violent shaking made the Iceman go to his frozen knees. He stood up and looked over to see a giant pit. He looked to the other side and saw a small group of people too scared to move forward.

Bobby stood up and held out his hand, "Come on, let's go home." It sounded very casual, light even. The youngest in the group moved slightly forward, still too scared to fully move. "I don't wanna stay here." He spoke as he went and took a knee, meeting the child's eyes. "Do you ice skate?" The child nodded, Bobby wasn't distracted with the commotion around them.

"Let's go skating." The iced mutant stretched a hand outward towards the portal and started to form a beam of ice. He stood up and looked back at the kid, "Did you ever make a train?" The child nodded and shouted, "My momma said not to though." Bobby nodded and spoke, "I don't think she'll mind today." He paused for a moment before saying, "Come on!"

The small group quickly followed behind, "Alright everyone, hold on tight." The eldest of the group, who had to have been in her twenties spoke, "Wait, you're too cold to hold onto." Bobby paused slightly confused for a moment, he thought she was talking about his personality. Before he replied he looked down and realized that she was talking about his body temperature.

"Ooooh! Okay I gotcha." Now the icy mutant tried something he never tried before. He kept his hands, forearms, feet, and legs ice while the rest of his body went back to flesh and blood. "Ooo... that feels weird. Ready?" The girl nodded, and the chain was connected. The Iceman skated forwards on his beam of ice and moved them carefully forward.

He made the beam wider than normal, while he could easily handle a thinner beam, he wanted to be sure that the small group would be okay. They skated along, nearly there when a group of five Skrulls headed them off and made Bobby's beam break. The group fell harmlessly to the ground. Bobby was quick to stand and put himself in front of them to protect them.

The ice on his forearms and legs started to grow as he stared down the Skrulls. He raised his hand towards the black voided portal and created a protective wall of ice, in a flash too. He then spoke, "Go on, guys." In a casual tone once again, "I'll meet ya there." The group ran for the portal, with the safety of the ice blocking the Skrulls, they would make it.

Not that the Skrulls didn't try, but their weapons were hardly making a dent in the ice. With their failure they focused their attention on Bobby. The iced mutant lowered his arms and stood like he was waiting in line at Starbucks. "Hi guys." Of all the confrontations he had in the past, it was hard to pinpoint which was the worst. There was Rahne, when he had almost killed her.

But then there was with Hart and the Purifiers. That was the last time he saw her, in the hospital while she was recovering from gunshot wounds. Suddenly the light tone of 'Hi guys' turned into a dark expression on his face. He still didn't want to know but the Skrulls kept him from knowing. He tried to think of what to do, if he should try and do to these guys what he almost did to Rahne?

He didn't even really remember how he did it. Maybe freeze their feet and arms? He looked down to his hands as they stretched out, trying to think. But then he realized something, he wasn't being attacked. Facing a small group of Skrulls wouldn't they have attacked by then? Bobby looked up and saw the turquoise tinted Skrulls not moving. He carefully approached one and tapped on its face.

Hard flesh, above and icy interior. Bobby gasped and took a step back. He had frozen the Skrulls from the inside, solid. Not knowing what to do next, and a little scared by what he had just done, it being an all too familiar reminder of what he did to Rahne, he simply stepped away from what he did, and headed for the portal.

Telepathy (I'm not a bloody ninja)
Joint Post Psylocke and Longshot

::A flying bike? I’m almost envious!:: Betsy’s return was lighthearted as it was possible to be; she could feel over their link that while the Black Queen was not down and out of the fight any time soon, that her time on Skrullos had been hard and the woman was worn. ::We will all be home soon…:: the words were reassuring and she moved on to extend the link to her White Knight. ::Harada, I am sorry you have to formally take your position up in this manner, but I’m sure you’re not about to turn down this chance to fight.::

The comm channel had been activated, but she chose to continue with telepathy, for it would serve no other purpose on this godforsaken planet and in a strange way, it was a comfort to have that almost hidden conversation with her people. Clad in her armour, Betsy was not without her defences and armed, she was not weak either.

The skrull took her by surprise as she moved forwards, ready to fire at another. It knocked the gun from her hands and almost as if they knew she was powerless against her, a smile curled its lips upwards. For a split second, Betsy was frozen to the spot and then, only one thought was in her mind. Dragging a breath into her lungs, the White Queen hissed in rage and flew forwards, cocking her elbow back and letting her gloved fist fly into the alien’s face, the impact travelling right back up to her shoulder.

Not expecting it, the skrull staggered, dazed, before regaining its balance and attempting to fight back, but the telepath was full of rage, rage for her friends, rage for her older brother’s memory and all the other people dragged to this despicable place. With a flurry of fists and even feet, the Englishwoman fought back savagely, green blood smears against the deep purple armour. Managing to get the skrull to the floor, Betsy pinned it, straddling the creature and driving her fist across its face heavily, the head snapping down to one side on impact.

“That…that is for my brother you bastard!”

As he spun and danced with Warpath, the two knive wielding warriors moving in an almost choreographed battle, mostly made possibly by Longshot's agility and luck playing perfectly against Warpath's strength and focus, the little clone found himself surrounded, momentarily by a dozen or so green skinned soldiers, with swords that crackled with energy and guns that leaked light. Separated from Warpath, and from any other hope of rescue, Longshot gave a cheeky grin and said, "Only a dozen? I'm disappointed. I'd hope you'd think me more dangerous that that."

Then in a move that was a blur of impossible contortions and fearless motion, Longshot grabbed a sword in one hand and a gun in the other, jerking them towards him quick enough to catch them off guard. The gun fired, but the sword had already cut through the barrel. Flipping the gun wielder forward, Longshot used him as a springboard to back spring behind the suddenly panicked dozen. The laser gun exploded in the skrulls hands, setting of a chain reaction that sent other guns into sparking disfunction, and lightning swords rearing in horror to slash limbs from their own men. Blinded, deafened, and horribly burnt from the explosions, the Skrulls reverted to base animal defense mode, and lashed out at their own people in a frenzy.

But it didn't matter to the clone, because Longshot's landing had taken him to where he could see the White Queen straddling a Skrull warrior, bashing his head in with her fists. Another skrull charged at her, attempting, most likely, to save his compatriot, but a well placed throwing knife to the eye stopped his charge.

Longshot broke into a leaping run, dodging the debris, the bodies, the attackers in his way, to slide to a halt beside Psylocke. He crouched beside her as she paused in her assault.

"How very unladylike," he smiled, not at all displeased by her strength of attack, "Would you like me to put this one down for you?"

Longshot’s voice brought her back to reality and swallowing, she looked up at the little killer, regarding him for a second, before looking back down at the skrull beneath her. With an almost grim look on her face, she finished the job with a wet, cracking sound commemorating the moment. “Thank you, Knight. I was however always taught to finish what I started and while I may not possess your skill in the deadly arts, I am not without my own knowledge…”

It was not the time for idle chatter and as she finished speaking to the clone, the White Queen rose up and quickly surveyed their surroundings. All was still chaos, but the odds were very obviously in their favour. “We shouldn’t linger here any longer than we have to, no matter how much fun you’re having teaching these things manners,” Betsy added, a shred of affection managing to creep into her otherwise hoarse and drained tone of voice.

Longshot smiled at the sudden death of the skrull and said, "I would never doubt your skill, Dear Queen." He offered her a hand up and then looked over to his King's portal. "The prisoners are escaping, I sent the little morlock boy to lead them out," He pointed at the many holograms of young Artie, in a rainbow of colors, ushering the escapees out of the shadowy exit back into the real world, "I suggest we beat our own hasty retreat and seal the exit behind us. While killing an army of ants may be fun, eventually they swarm one with sheer numbers."

Following his line of sight, Betsy knew that if Longshot was suggesting a retreat, then a retreat was the best possible course of action; the skilled killer was as deadly as he was dedicated and he would never mislead. Flexing her fingers within their protective gloves, she felt as if she could go another few rounds until every last scrap of her anger was sated, but today was not the time for that and she nodded, her heart still pounding within her chest.

“Very well, you have the right of it,” she agreed to follow Longshot’s course of action. “Let’s get out of this damned place.”

When he was urged to bury the Skrull, the Black Bishop surprised Jason by waiting. Though Jason wasn’t sure how long he could hold the Skrull in place before they realized that what they were firing at was not really there, he patiently did his best. The look on the Black Bishop’s face was one he knew all too well. He was thinking several moves ahead to the end game, trying to bring more Skrull warriors in so that when he finally did unleash his power it would be far more impacting.

“I’ll keep them busy,” he said with renewed focus. As the Skrull fought his projections they responded appropriately. The soldiers bled and died, they were trampled underfoot and the holographic machines took damage as well.

With distraction he looked over at the Brotherhood member that Moses was introducing him to, but only nodded. There was no time for pleasantries, and frankly he didn’t have the heart for it. Just when he thought he could hold them off no longer, Moses stepped in front of him and the shaking began.

Tremors rippling backward were just a meager taste of what Moses was unleashing in the other direction-but it was enough to send Jason staggering somewhat off of his feet. He caught himself with some effort and looked up just as the mountains collapsed in a cloud of dust and debris. The dust didn’t settle right away, but Jason could tell by the immediate silence following that they had done it.

“Very well done Bishop,” he said with a genuine smile. Then he looked around and took stock of what was going on around him. The goal was to get in, free the captives and get out. Now that they could focus somewhat, he quickly noted all of the smaller skirmishes taking place all around him.

“It’s time to gather everyone together. It’s time to leave.”

A blast of fiery orange suddenly caught his attention, and Jason turned to the side. Raging jets of fire arced through the air and hit the ground with a splattering boom, splashing liquid flame over anyone unfortunate enough to be in their burning radius.

Inspired by the simplicity and ingenuity of turning an opponent’s apparent advantage upside down, Jason stretched out his powers to every one of the captives, tapping into all of their minds and like a true illusionist drawing their attention precisely where he wanted it. An impossibly large face loomed in the sky. It seemed appropriate to Jason that it be the Black King, his pitch eyes filled with dense shadow and eternity stared down at the former prisoners.

“You have been prisoners of war long enough. The time has come to leave this place.” The area where the portal lay suddenly lit up for everyone to see-except of course the telepathically immune Skrull. “Everybody move quickly to the portal, and to your freedom.” The visage of Max faded, but above the portal remained a beacon of light for all who could see Jason’s illusions.

“Now for a little distraction,” he said to Moses. “Let’s prepare a little cover and misdirection for our escapees.” On the wristband he entered a series of commands which resulted in a host of fake escapees for the Skrull to focus their fires on. Wicked liquid flame splashed over them, and with technological marvel some of them began to burn and smolder.

As a final touch he made sure through his own illusory power that the true escapees could see through the holograms. The multitude of layers was slightly more complicated than he would have preferred, but in this instance he thought it was necessary. “If they get too close shake them off course.”

Darkforce Manipulation, Teleportation
"Do it now, Mastermind," the Shroud gave the withdrawal signal to the White Bishop. Only moments before, his own Bishop had decimated the skrulls ground forces with a level of destruction that not even the Black King knew he possessed. But the high of victory was short-lived as projectiles of burning chemicals pummeled and splashed over the battlefield.

"They're killing their own soldiers to get to us," the Black King called over the Hellfire network as the napalm-like chemicals took down friend and foe. "Withdrawal now." As he spoke those words, a giant hologram of himself appeared over the battle, delivering its message to all the escapees.

The Black King saw more coming, but not in time open a portal and redirect them back to the source; there were just too many and moving too fast. He dispersed the dark cloud dove for the portal and turned away at the last minute, he would need to be the last person on this side, closing it as he left. Dropping to the ground, he lifted his hands and concentrated; a black wall appeared over the main group of stampeding escapees. Cannonball-like globes of chemicals skimmed across the surface like a stone skipping across a lake, but as more dropped, the king's concentration began to falter.

Telepathy, Telekinesis / Empathy
Around her, the battles waged. Captive and rescuer alike rallied to the calls for support and help the violence an all together strange experience for her-- it was all one-sided. The skrulls had always been a blind spot in her mind and now more than ever it stood as a stark reminder. Not that it mattered. The loss of that interference made everything easier on her mind and she could easily project to the various individuals on the field. A skrull was incoming, A squad was targeting survivors. It became more about creating blanket awareness for the involved parties than actual mind reading.

Still, that wasn't the only thing she was needed for. All the while, the need to make it to the portal stood the primary goal-- especially for those who could not so easily defend themselves. While most of the skrulls kept their targets to the aggressive mutants, some would turn their attentions to the fleeing survivors and then, simply, Alix would assist. Telekinesis was of course the only real help she could give, but with enough warning and enough awareness, it all seemed to go well.

That was, until more and more began flooding in. Max issued the order to Jason to rally the survivors after Artie and Alix, still focused, amplified that message directly into the minds of every human on the god forsaken rock. Propriety to be damned, it was paramount. He continued to light the way and she, as before, moved after the survivors.

::I'll help:: Her voice was simplistic and straightforward as ever into Max's mind. Instantly upon communicating, she provided support to with her own telekinesis. By no means as potent as a barrier or shield, she could at least keep projectiles and skrulls themselves away from the fleeing survivors.

Doctor Nemesis
Unregistered

Oddly enough, Nemesis had been seemingly absent for a large majority of the battle between the freedom fighters and Hellfire against their would be Skrull tormentors. The reason being he was leading the humans and non-combat mutants along the edge of the battlefield where they would meet minimal resistance; all in the goals of reaching the teleportation portal that the Hellfire had emerged through. He and the ones ready to fight despite not having any abilities had procured a number of Skrull weapons and were using them as effectively as a crotchety, century old man and some rag tag survivors could. Patrick, his little Skrull interrogation weapon turned companion was talking to him about how crazy this all was.

Apparently the bonding process heightened his, it's intelligence quite a bit, and James didn't like it. He was speaking Skrullfish, but since they were connected, he could understand him perfectly. ::You should watch our right, they seem to be coming from that direction.:: "Don't tell me what to do." ::Are you sure you can correctly utilize the weapons? They don't seem to be operating at full efficiency.:: Of course I know how to operate them. I'm one of the smartest people on my planet, and definitely the smartest on this rock. They just don't have full power packs."

::I'm only stating what you already know, yet refuse to acknowledge.:: You're making it hard to concentrate, so if you're going to second guess me, do it when we're not in a battle that would make James Cameron wet himself if you gave him a 3D camera." ::What is a James Cameron?:: Nemesis groaned in frustration and fired a barrage of shots from the energy pistols cradled in his hands, dropping several Skrulls and spending the remaining ammo he had in them. He let the lifeless guns fall to the ground and pulled the big rifle he had on his back, took aim at a skycycle leading a small flight of them and fired.

A plasma bolt jumped out and hit the lead one, then arced to the others, sending all of them careening out of control and blowing up. He sensed amusement and slight confusion coming from his "passenger", and knew a question was coming. "Alternate Firing Mode...most weapons have them. Did I satisfy your curiosity?" The creature was silent for several moments before a ::Yes:: was finally spoken in his head. He smiled and walked over to one of the Skrulls not quite dead, then picked up the gun he'd dropped and double tapped him. He turned around and those in his group not providing cover fire were looking at him strangely.

"What?! Never seen a man converse with a psychic starfish slash biological interrogation device bonded to his brain before?!" He waved them on and they kept heading towards the portal, but something shiny had caught his eye. At first glance it appeared to be a skycycle, but then it moved and he could see organic parts along with the machinery. "Those bastards did it again!" ::Yes, it seems to be a techno-organic prototype for use in amphibious settings.:: "Just call it a sky shark. It's a shark that has turbines on it, it's a sky shark."

Carefully walking over, he surveyed the abandoned craft and smiled, he'd found a new toy. It took him a few moments to figure out how the snapping monster mech worked, but once he did, he grabbed the reigns and it rose into the air. It shot off like a rocket and the first thing he headed for was more skrulls. "SCIENCE HOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!" ::That is an effective battle cry.:: "You think? I almost went with "It's Hammer Time" for a second, but I like that on better."

The sharks weapons sparked to life as Nemesis began shooting cycles out of the sky, strafing runs, and biting the unfortunate one who was unlucky enough to get close to the sharks mouth. When everyone started heading for the portal though, he looped around and stood triumphant on the back of his steed...thing. With the portal in sight and getting closer, he grinned and began to hum a little tune. "Dum duh da daaa da. Kill da waaaabbit. Kill da waaaabbit. Dum duh da daaaaa."

Chrysalis

(beginning a few minutes before)

As the ragtag group of escapees went hither-and-thither throughout the camp on varying tasks of varying importance, Lucan sat alone at the edge of camp. In one hand rested a forgotten cup, half-full of some unsavory wilderness gruel. His back rested against a soft, lumpy rock that seemed to make itself more uncomfortable whenever he squirmed. He sighed and stared dumbly down at his mug, thinking, I’m really not cut out for this.

It had only been a few days since he, stumbling into Doctor Nemesis's medical camp after being freed by Dr. Strange’s machinations, had met up with the renegade group, but it felt like he had been fleeing the Skrulls for months. And while some of the group, such as the strong, warlike Native American he knew to be the X-Man James Proudstar, seemed to thrive in the wild, primal life of a hunted (and sometimes hunting) beast, Lucan was slowly retreating into himself. He had spoken only a few words to convince his fellow escapees that he wasn’t a Skrull, and since then the reticent crystallokinetic had interacted less and less with the others, speaking only to relay information and doing only what was asked (or ordered) of him by those better acclimated to the situation.

He shifted uncomfortably in his makeshift seat. He could have made a more comfortable reclining place out of his crystals, but ever since he had killed the Skrull guard at the prison he had barely used his powers at all. The few times he had been asked on patrols he had lurked near the rear guard and allowed others to dispatch any aliens unlucky enough to run afoul them. It wasn’t that he thought the killing of the Skrulls was wrong; he knew that the beasts were as evil as they came and deserved death. Lucan just couldn't come to terms with being a killer. So he didn't. He knew it was selfish, he knew it was weak. But he couldn’t help it.

A sharp, shrill whistle jolted him from his musings. He leaped to his feet and stood there a moment, in his disorientation completely forgetting the meaning of the signal. Warpath’s order’s, however, soon remedied that. With a feeling of darkest dread fixing itself in his chest he made his way to the last of the departing transports and hopped on board. Truth be told, that moment he wanted nothing more than to turn tail and vanish into the woods. Possibly the only thing that stopped him was the knowledge that if this battle failed, all was truly lost.

The craft sped off towards the sounds of battle, and a purple sheen appeared over Lucan’s body, quickly thickening into a full body of crystal armor. In his right hand a Parlite, basket-hilted broadsword took shape, double edged and deadly. The young mutant gazed down at the weapon, glad for the mask that hid his face. Otherwise, he was sure the fear in his eyes would have paralyzed everyone on the ship.

The transport came to a halt and Lucan stepped down warily; however, the scene that greeted was not at all as he had imagined it. He had expected to find Callisto's patrol hopelessly trapped by an army of Skrull too large to number. Instead, he found that a small force of mutants had come inexplicably to their aid and were beating the intruders back in spectacular fashion. Black portals flashed in and out of existence, a small, acrobatic figure flung blades with impossible precision, and seismic waves rocked the unnatural turf of Skrullos, sending many of the enemy to their deaths.

Even with the arrival of the unforeseen help, Lucan hesitated a moment, selfish fear fighting to hold him back from the primal fury of the battlefield. Two things, however, happened simultaneously to draw him out of his inactivity. First, he saw a Skrull harrying a small band of would-be escapees from a flying machine. Second, Dr. Strange's spell began to take effect.

In an instant, all thoughts of self vanished from the mind of Chrysalis, replaced with a single, self-imposed directive: Protect.

He flung himself into action, running with a speed beyond even his own considerable talents. When he was about ten yards away from the refugees, the Skrull in question fired, sending a deadly volley of concussive energy blasts at the his intended victims. A few dove for cover, while one man wrapped his arms around a young girl and held her tight, prepared to block the shots with his own body. However, he was saved this sacrifice by the armored body of Chrysalis, which flew over his head at the last moment and absorbed the deadly barrage.

The last time he had been hit by Skrull weaponry, Lucan had been disoriented to the point of disability. Now, however, he was ready, and with a mental constitution not his own he took the blows without faltering. The Skrull, seeing his assault foiled, brought his vehicle around and began another strafing run. This time the Lucan didn't even allow the bolts to strike his armor, but struck each one with his blade midair, harmlessly dispersing the energy. Then, just as the vehicle was about to pass over him, he leaped straight up into the air, coming to a peak level with the Skrull. He had only a moment to see the shock and horror on the beast's face before his blade cut a clean horizontal arc through the air, leaving it headless.

He kicked off the speeder, landed with an easy roll, and hurled himself at an approaching, earthbound Skrull, sending his blade through the creature’s chest before his previous victim even hit the ground. The remainder of the former’s squad opened fire with their energy rifles, but he weaved seamlessly through the bolts with a finesse completely foreign to him, cutting down each beast with ruthless efficiency. Somewhere, deep in the recesses of his mind, Lucan knew that if he stopped to think what he was doing, he would freeze, and he would be lost. So he didn't, and killed instead.

Nevertheless, even with the power of Strange and some of the strongest mutants on the plane at his side, the Skrulls were simply too many to be defeated. No matter how many he slashed, stabbed, or sent howling to the ground, fresh meat continued to pour in from the army of Skrullos. Even through the Power Gem fueled adrenaline rush, Lucan felt his arm begin to weary and his concentration begin to shiver under the impact of attack after attack. Thus, it came as a great relief when the pitch-eyed visage of the Black King appeared in the sky and ordered a retreat. He turned and joined the rear of the retreating refugees, ready to defend the defenseless and deal swift death to any Skrull foolish enough to try to pick off stragglers.
