AUGUST 25th (Saturday)
a little after one pm

The blond regen was sitting at a cafe in Mutant Town. He'd been to it before, but he couldn't remember when. Or with who. He'd ordered something to eat a while back, but he'd forgotten what it was, lost in his thoughts, brow furrowed in a way that someone else might worry about wrinkles. It was very busy, almost too crowded for his comfort.

A waitress finally brought him the drink he'd asked for, though his meal wasn't ready. He nodded absently to her and drank, not really tasting it.

It had seemed the right decision when he'd made it. The amount of second guessing and self doubt made him wonder if it was the right one after all. Getting away with Derek had definitely been something he'd needed. He'd never gotten away from Xavier's for more than a week or so since he was fifteen years old. Nearly seven years now? Certainly his entire adult life and most of his years as a teenager had taken place among the X-Men.

He wasn't ready to return. He wasn't going to return unless he was going to have at least a chance of getting into the X-Men. Anyone could do the job he'd been doing. He didn't want to be some guy who just stuck around because he couldn't let go of his childhood dreams, doing whatever job he could as an excuse to stay.

Maybe he wasn't good enough to be one of the X-Men and that he could deal with if that were the case. He thought he could deal with that. He just needed to find something else. The last year or more he'd let Derek become the answer and he was - fantastic - but he needed to actually do something with his life.

No, he hadn't made a wrong decision in leaving.

No, the problem was he just missed how much time he had been able to spend with his boyfriend. Worried that his decision might be taken the wrong way. Derek was in New York now but what if he went back to Utopia? Even if he didn't, the mansion would be rebuilt eventually...

The waitress returned with his food and he forced a grimace of a smile and she shot him a worried look. He forced it still further until it actually appeared genuine, even to his eyes. She seemed nice. She didn't need to worry. She still hesitated before leaving, but the cafe was very busy and she had quite a bit of work to do. He was left to his food and his thoughts.

They would figure something out. It had his stomach tied up in knots but they would figure something out. He just hoped Derek understood that he wasn't giving up his dreams with the X-Men. He was just looking for an alternative, because he'd realized that maybe the X-Men weren't what he'd wanted precisely. Just a means to what he'd wanted.

He'd hit on it during the Apocalypse. He'd wanted to be able to protect those he cared about. That didn't necessarily mean joining a super hero team. It meant being prepared. He still needed to think about what he really wanted, but that was a start. Something to think about.

More importantly, he hoped that...

He just really hoped that he hadn't fucked things up.

the next day, same time, same place (JP)

"You know if you keep on making that face its going to get stuck that way," Luce said in a brightly cheerful voice, turning the chair around with a loud scrape and straddling it. She was grinning at her brother, simply glad that he was back in the area. She was still keeping a low profile, but she was already tired of that. The shit that happened was well over with, for now, and she was tired of just watching and waiting for something else to happen.

Here, at least, was a distraction.

Teasing her brother was always a great diversion. Not to mention the way he was glowering at his perfectly good looking food she'd expect to find shards of glass in it. Something was eating at him.

"I bet you'd love that. Great big furrows in your forehead, great big pout, massive glare- and now its pointed at me," she teased relentlessly. Not that he often looked anything other than serious anymore - and she hated that because he used to have the biggest smile and the best laugh ever - but this was definitely more than his usual serious look. Something was up and she meant to find out what.

A great big sigh signaled a release of tension, along with her brother's shoulders drooping a bit. She looked at him with some real concern when a she found a small smile on his face. Nothing like what it used to be when they were kids but it was there! Thanks to her of course.

"What's up Kel?" she asked, for once leaving off the silly nicknames. He was upset, and teasing was fine trying to get a smile out of him but she knew that she could easily take it too far. She could see his mind working, looking at her. Probably deciding if he ought to tell her whatever it was. She made her face as attentive as possible.

"I got my own place," he said, still looking uncertain if he was going to tell her what was really bothering him-

Wait.

Did that mean he was leaving those X-Men? She thought he'd never do that. For a long time she'd thought he was brainwashed by them or something. He really did look troubled about it though. If that was really what was eating at him.

"Nice place, then?" she asked, trying not to get impatient with him. She was used to him trying to keep things to himself, but it was really annoying when he was upset and she had to figure out why without any help then a few cryptic hints.

"Yeah," Kel said, playing with his food instead of eating it. No wonder he was so damned skinny. If he didn't watch out she was going to force feed him. He seemed to guess what she was thinking because he took a bite. "I think its... too big for just me though."

That was a bit more to work with - this was the first time he'd ever lived alone. So he was probably lonely. And - oh! - it meant he wasn't living with his boyfriend. That accounted for his sulky mood. Though. If it was that big a place...

"So... you wouldn't mind me crashing there then?" she asked brightly and watched his jaw drop. It shut with an audible click of his teeth and she laughed. She could remember countless times he'd tried to get her to stay with him - when he was living with the X-Men. And now she was asking to stay with him? "No? Oh okay, I see-"

"No! No I mean yes, you can stay-"

She grinned at him. She wasn't going to let him keep on sulking like that and she was going to find the root of his problems and bash it until he was happy again. That was what good sisters did, right?

a half hour or so later, still AUG 26th

Kel had shown his sister to his apartment and left her there to check it out. He'd known it was too big for just him when he'd decided on the place, but he'd just really really liked the place. Thought that maybe he'd get used to it. Living on his own, the quiet, or just not turning around and seeing Derek.

That... yeah that was it. It was way too soon for this. He'd just moved, hadn't even finished unpacking the few things he had... there wasn't even furniture in all the rooms yet. He knew even if he saw him every day, it wouldn't be the same as living with him. And he had been the one to make the move. What had to be going through Derek's mind about this... he wasn't sure he wanted to know.

Instead of sticking around his place he'd taken a walk. It wasn't all that far to the water. He leaned on a rail and just looked. His mind stayed quiet - for a short while. He'd already worried every little detail to death. He made the right decision.

It wasn't perfect. Not close. Nothing was. But it was him making his own decisions and sticking with them, and seeing where that brought him. Maybe no where special. Maybe he'd end up just as restless and frustrated as he was before. But at least he was doing something.

Kel closed his eyes. The noise of the city and the sound of the water below. He could like living here. He absently checked his phone before stuffing it in his back pocket. There'd been no messages when he'd checked it a few minutes earlier, when he'd left the apartment, and it hadn't gone off since then. He had to stop checking it, and no he didn't need to message him again.

Well, maybe one.

~Dinner? Out - or I could make something?~

He hesitated before sending it. They'd lived together nearly a year, they'd gone across the country together, and he didn't think he'd asked him on an actual date since the first one had fallen through. It was funny, that it made him nervous.

He could worry about his plans later.
