Normal. Such a simple word and concept, yet it had evolved into a sort of watchword for Kim. Everything revolved around maintaining the idea of a normal. There was a certain amount of her pretending that she wasn't bothered as she was by the events that had transpired in the last year. It was how she coped with things. Pretending they were something else entirely. Making them as shallow as possible so she knew what was on the bottom of the pool without diving in.

Kimberly spent her time in the Worthington Complex working on the foundations of a new life. She wanted to get right to looking for work, so she only waited a few weeks before she started to pull on threads around her, hoping that on the other end of one of them was some potential career path. Something to make her feel fulfilled like she did when she was going to school

With time on her hands the last six months, her image of herself had become hazy and defocused; the lines she had drawn were blurry and she was struggling to find a solid footing.

That wasn't to say things had not improved since her triumphant return. She was happier than she was when she left. She was feeling more creative and she was getting more done. The final step in all of that was putting her foot outside the door and seeking employment in the only thing she really had any training for: being a mutant.

It was a blunt assessment, but Kimberly had come to terms with it months ago. She could sing and put out all the albums she wanted online, it wasn't really accomplishing anything and ultimately she wasn't contributing anything worthwhile. She knew that she wanted to put what she learned at the school to good use, now she just had to get a job interview.

Being an adult was hard.

Kimberly stood in her bathroom on the very day of her birthday. Staring into the mirror and seeking that shallow image that had comforted her for so long. The image that greeted her now had gotten so complex that her ability to translate it to something basic was long gone and what was left was an aberration. It was a testament to her growth as a person, but it made hiding her emotions hard and no one would make the argument that Kimberly was a fantastic actress. No one.

Today was her birthday. Today was a event for smiles and cake. Gazes pointed firmly towards the future and backs to the past. Though she wasn't going to be doing anything to celebrate till later in the evening. The first thing on her priority list today was a particularly unique outing. She was meeting Scott for a job interview of sorts. She had arranged it a month prior when she returned to New York, but as with any two busy people, it was difficult to arrange a meeting in the city.

They had decided to meet in Mutant Town at a small cafe to discuss everything Kimberly had brought up with Scott. The first thing on her mind was becoming a part of the Xmen. Doing something with the gifts she had received to help people. She had approached the subject with Scott over email but had asked him to leave his thoughts on it open ended because ultimately she wanted his advice on the whole thing because he was one of the, if not the single person, she respected most. Odd, since he had also eye beamed her iPhone when she was still going to school.

Kimmy stood outside the coffee shop, she was about a half hour early. This had been the spot she stood around a year ago with Jay. The thought brought a smile to her face. She had tried so hard to insist that the evening wasn't a date.

Kim pushed through the front door and nodded to the barista. She spent a lot of time in the tiny shop. It was located on a street corner the two walls that faced the street were made entirely from windows of different shapes, sizes, colors and even thicknesses; the resulting effect was a wash of light inside the cafe that gave the illusion of fluidity. Colors swam and light swirled in the cups at each table and the over all effect of the place left Kimmy feeling at ease.

This place was one of her most favorite places in the world and there wasn't thing she would change.

Well, the coffee was sometimes too weak, but you cant have everything.

When Scott Summers was a very young boy, he lived in the forests outside of Anchorage, Alaska, where he was born. His father's transfer took them to the tropical quiet of Hawaii before the final relocation to Omaha. They were all nice places, with their share of tall buildings, but New York, New York was something that Scott had nearly lost himself in. Had he ever seen it without the shields of red crystal over his eyes? His first glimpse of it was colored like blood and the angry young man he was at the time had locked that image in his brain. The danger of the city with its millions of humans who would hurt him if they knew what he was bled into the innate desire to do good and important things, and would forever influence his view of the city and it's outlying burroughs. Scott stood at the stern of the ferry that would take him from the island to the neighborhood , and he watched the tall buildings bobbing in his vision, wondering how many times he and those he worked with had saved that city, wondering if those millions of humans understood what had been done for them.

He disembarked the ferry with everyone else, his appearance not speaking of his genetic status. Just a tall, decent looking man, with short brown hair, and eyes hidden behind expensive looking red lensed sunglasses. He was not a threat, he wasn't even someone a person would look at twice, harmless and perhaps a little less than friendly. As he strolled with long legged and quick steps that managed to look unrushed somehow, he took in the state of the neighborhood. It had been rebuilt since the devastation visited upon it by the Horseman of War and his soldiers. Alex. Alex who was now somewhere under the ground with a wife close to birthing their first child, his nephew or niece. Was this going to be what got his brother to finally live up to his potential? Scott hoped so.

Funny that a stubborn and somewhat lost boy who dropped out of high school sophomore year and likely would have stayed dropped out if the Professor hadn't found him, saved him, had grown up to be a schoolteacher and mentor to some of the most disenfranchised and dangerous children in the world. No matter their powers, no matter their upbringing, no matter their pasts, they were mutants and humans were right to be afraid. Scott's job was to make sure that those fears never came to fruition and he believed that he had done a good job.

Stopping in front of the coffee shop, Scott looked at the windowed wall that Kimmy so admired, and he saw a tactical mistake in the making. One flicker of his eyelid, one shout from a sonic, one stray blast from a tk, this beauty became a shower of razor sharp shards. But it was a sign of hope, the belief that the world was safe enough to not have to hide behind walls of stone and iron. How much of that security was because of men and woman like those that bore the X? Had they made an impact, or was the world saving nature of their acts simply too large to fathom?

Scott entered the coffee house, stopping by the counter to order a soda before joining Kimmy where she sat waiting for him. "Miss Parker."

"Hello Mr.Summers!" Kimberly greeted scot cheerfully. She had spent a period of thought considering what she would actually call Scott. She had not seen him since she was a student at the school, because it wasn't long after that Kimberly had relocated to California to have some time to analyze things in her life. She had ultimately decided that she would match his greeting, so she didn't come off as disrespectful: a problem she had definitely had with Cyclops in the past.

"Thank you for coming all the way out here to visit with me." She crossed her legs and offered Scott her familiar smile. "I sincerely appreciate it."

Kimberly would always be Kimberly. But she had taken the time and underwent a metamorphosis of sorts. The garish pink aura that had once surrounded her in the form of clothing, accessories, and more was replaced with a toned down and much more mature look.

She had opted for a short sleeved white blouse and a light blue skirt with a pink belt. She wanted the style to be understated and professional. The only accessories that came with this outfit were a pair of pearl earrings and a blue pendant around her neck. The idea was to dress to impress, because regardless of the verbiage she had used in the emails up to this point with Scott, this was basically a job interview and she wanted him to know she was serious.

She had reached out to Scott Summers specifically because of all the people who had taught her since her mutation surfaced, she respected and looked up to him more than any other. He had been patient with her when they were catching her up to speed in mathematics and was equally patient in self-defense and accuracy classes.

With all the school had done for her in mind, when it came time to consider a future career path, she realized she wanted to return to that space and help young mutants who were going through the same issues and life processes she had gone through, the only thing left to do was to articulate that to Scott and hope he agreed.

Miss Parker's updated look did not slide past Scott's eye, but then he wasn't really what one might call a keen judge of fashion. If Jean didn't insist on something better, he'd probably wear the same pair of worn but comfortable work jeans and that t-shirt of his that due to his limited color vision he couldn't decide if it was dark dark blue or flat black. When Ruby had taken over his body for those long ago months, he'd updated Scott's wardrobe, but most of those a little too flashy clothes had been lost in the fires that followed the Purifier attacks on the school, and when Jean had taken him shopping for replacements, he'd insisted on his normal drab and simple wardrobe. Scott had been an orphan, and before that a military brat. Clothes meant very little to a man who had grown up with very little to call his own.

But, they did mean a lot to Miss Parker so Scott, who was also not a keen judge of interpersonal relationships, had found that there was value in studying one's fellows in militaristic terms now and again. Kimmy had essentially changed her armor, abandoning the bubble gum pop princess to present herself as an adult, which was a battle strategy of it's own.

"Oh, don't worry about it," Scott said, "I had to be in the city to sign some paperwork Warren had for me, and to pick up some equipment for my new jet." The Blackbird had been destroyed by the Skrulls, and the X-Men were currently acquiring a new and improved vehicle. Scott considered it his, as he always did. It was the one bit of pure selfishness that he admitted to, and justified by thinking that no one else could fly the way he did. Of course that was true, but it wasn't normally like him to be arrogant as a rule, "I do have to get back to the Wandavator before nightfall though. I promised Jean we'd have supper on the terrace tonight to watch the migration of the Quetzalcoatlus flock."

"I won't be keeping you that long, I would hate to step between Jean and a romantic Dinner." She offered Scott a smile, not entirely sure what a Quetzalcoatlus even was. She was going to operate under the assumption that they were some sort of bird until she was proven wrong, and she was sure she would be eventually.

She paused after her response to Scott. Her eyes drifting to the stained glass, which had cast a soft blue light over her side of the table, and Scott, fittingly, had been cast in red and orange light. There were a lot of things she would like to say. Apologize for running off like she did. Thank Scott for the time she was at the school and for everything she learned. Ask him how things were in his part of the world. Every time she had thought about this moment before, she had come up empty. It wasn't like her to be without words, but she was.

It was only two or three seconds that she was weighing her words and eventually she found the words she had been looking for. "I really appreciate you sitting down with me for this conversation. It's..." She trailed off slightly, laughing a bit to herself. "Well its been a long time coming."

Kimberly took a deep breath. The first few words had come out of her slowly, but as she progressed, they tumbled out faster and faster. The subject intimidated her somehow. "I wanted to discuss with you assisting with the reconstruction of the school in any way I can and returning there when the time is right." She replayed the words in her head and frowned at herself. She had managed to steer herself around the big idea again.

"And working with the Xmen in a larger capacity in the future." She finally managed to get to the meat of the conversation. It had been easy to approach in a email, but saying it out loud made her nervous. It wasn’t the idea of what being a part of that team entailed. No, for Kimberly it was the completely real possibility that Scott did not share her confidence in the idea that the xmen were where Kimberly needed to be.

Miss Parker got down to it, and Scott felt an inward surge of pride for the young woman had been only a bubble headed girl when she first arrived. He understood how the school could change those who were in need of change. He had gone from being an angry loner to a stoic team leader. Warren from a self absorbed brat to a responsible and generous hero. Jean from a girl so frightened of her powers it was crippling, to a woman who wielded telepathy with a perfect mix of control and strength. Hank... well, he'd changed more than any of them in more ways than one.

"I'm very glad to hear this, Miss Parker," Scott said, once she was done with her speech, "I realize that your interests have not been geared towards our often unglamorous and stressful activities, but to see that you understand the value of what we're doing, is gratifying. Sometimes it's hard for us to see the point in continuing, the road is so hard, the work is back breaking, and so much has been lost... But when one of our students finds his or her way, when one of our children survives the very difficult growing pains of evolution, and decides to use what it is that could be used for force or personal gain instead for the benefit of all, that proves to us that we're doing the right thing. I never wanted to be a teacher, Miss Parker, I wanted to fly, I wanted to be in the military, and there've been times when I've resented that the Professor laid such a heavy burden on me. These moments make everything else worth it."

Setting aside his soda, Scott looked at her for a moment and then, with a nod said, "The School reopens in January, things should be ready by then. Until then, if you wish to remain in New York, I'd suggest you speak with Warren Worthington, about working with the X-Men who've stayed in NYC during this. If you want to come back to Utopia with me, we can arrange that as well. It's your decision, and either way, there's a place with us for you, always."

"Its not a huge secret… that when I came to the school for the first time, I was a mess." She looked away from Scott's face and towards the window that looked out to the street corner. The colored glass casting color over her face.

"Everything I knew was crumbling. I had never even given thought to mutants back then, I was so far away in my own world. All I considered were my next movie role or single. I didn't realize that every single person I surrounded myself with were so…" Kimberly struggled with the word she wanted to use here. Her voice trailed off and she just let the thought drop.

"It became pretty clear when I came here that I had a lot to think about. From day one. But from day one, I went out of my way to avoid that conflict. I kept on the same way I had been and nothing really changed, aside from positive influences around me, I was the same person."

"I don't even know when it happened, but I started changing, I didn't recognize it initially. There were so many moments where it was do or die, and I didn't give much second thought. I just did it." Kimberly smiled to herself, pride swelling inside of her while she considered all she had accomplished.

"I am grateful every change life has thrown me. It has brought me to where I am now, and I can't conceive a life without the lessons you and the others at the school" That wasn't necessarily true, since she had been dropped into the shoes of a Kimberly who had not had that privilege.

"I can say that there isn't anything in this world more important for young mutants than a place to be safe and learn. At least right now." Kimberly finished speaking, and blushed slightly.

"Sorry, I am sort of rambling now. I think going to Utopia would be good for me. Nothing going on in New York anyway, not for me."
