POWERS GENERAL DESCRIPTION: [2 paragraph minimum. Some powers will be requested for more.] Angelica Potts is a mutant with the ability to generate, manipulate, and emit microwave energy. To generate her microwave energy, her body unconsciously converts electromagnetic fields and other environmental energy in to microwave radiation. These microwaves are typically low-energy, such as you would typically expect from cellphones or other devices. Because of the nature of her power, it is not recommended to bring energy weapons in to her proximity. Projectile weapons should be the weapon of choice against her. Most energy-based weapons will likely prove ineffective against her, given her ability to absorb and generate electromagnetic radiation. In the worst case scenario, Nova may use such energy to bolster her own ability. From testimony and police reports, Ms. Potts possesses the ability to perceive both microwave and radio transmissions. By all accounts, this ability appears to be passive and it is thought that she can focus on specific frequencies to eavesdrop on both radio and cellular phone communications. Angelica has also demonstrated an ability to focus these microwaves in to higher energy beams. One such victim of this ability had his eyes brought to a boil within three seconds and is now legally blind because of cataracts. One account even has her melting .22mm rounds from a handgun with her power. She seems unable to control the ability at will however, and both instances of high-powered microwaves were performed as self-defense. However, there is substantial evidence that she is gaining control over these abilities, and she may already possess conscious command of one or both of these abilities at the time of this report. Given the nature of her power, Angelica Potts has been assigned the codename: Nova. Her projected potential within the next twenty years is reported as follows: Microwave Energy Manipulation: In order to use her microwave energy for specific purposes, Nova must mentally concentrate, thus causing the microwaves to focus about her body. This high concentration of microwaves can be perceived in the Earth's atmosphere as a white aura of ionized air that turns opaque as the microwaves are concentrated. In order to project the microwave energy towards a specific target, she must mentally direct some of the energy swirling around her towards that target. Currently, Nova is able to focus microwaves on a specific target, and cause it to burst into flame, or explode, or melt. By her 20s, her ability to focus microwaves will qualify her as a high-powered microwave weapon, capable of disrupting most military electronics. By her 30s, she will definitely overwhelm any form of protection we currently have in the field or in development. Microwave Emission: Nova can use her microwave energy to generate an intense electron beam. This beam is capable of melting through most material and causing great physical harm. As she approaches her 30s, she will be able to melt a metal object the size of a cannon almost instantly. By her 40s, Nova will be able to apply this temperature over an area of several square miles, qualifying her as a weapon of mass destruction. There is a possibility she may even have the potential to be the equivalent of a rudimentary nuclear warhead. By super-heating the air around her, she can theoretically surround her self with an aura of flaming plasma, and use it to form a barrier. Most projectile attacks will have little chance of passing through this barrier, and it is likely to only get stronger as Nova's power grows. Thankfully, she cannot seem to direct this plasma, so controlled flight is not possible. WEAKNESS: Nova possesses the ability to intercept and broadcast microwave and radio communications. Agents are recommended to take precautions when operating in the field with her. Encryption for both cellular and radio communications is highly recommended to prevent eavesdropping. It is also highly suggested to use power sources exceeding 50V when communicating wirelessly to avoid possible jamming by Nova Agents in the field are recommended to utilize industrial power outlets for this purpose. In time, higher energy power sources may be required. Nova possesses the ability to vaporize bullets before they can make contact with her. If attempting to shoot her, one must overwhelm her ability to defend herself. Continuous small-arms fire may eventually exhaust her and overwhelm her ability to defend herself. She has not demonstrated an ability to simultaneously defend and attack with her ability at the same time, so this tactic will also effectively suppress any offensive microwaves. Caution is recommended however as she might still be capable of using other weapons or seeking cover. If suppression is not enough, higher caliber rounds with a large concussive force such as .50mm, are recommended. She will likely be able to vaporize the bullet as well, but the bullet will create a shockwave in its wake large enough to cause physical damage even if there is no penetrating power. Caution should be taken when taking her alive in this manner as the shockwave with this round will likely still cause concussion and perhaps even hemohrrage the brain if the shot passes close enough to her head. PERSONALITY As a child, Angelica displayed a great degree emotionality, activity, and sociability. These temperaments formed the foundation for her emerging personality as a teenager. Her high emotionality meant she exhibited strong emotional responses and was a constant pain for her parents as she was wont to cry at an early age. Later, her increased attention to emotions and her environment provided her with a greater command over empathy and understanding various communication cues. Consequently, Angelica is extremely observant and is quick to take notice of changes in her environment, particularly social cues. Her recent experiences in Portland's underground have only served to heighten this social sensitivity, as she quickly learned the tell-tale signs for when her customers and handlers were happy or angry. Angelica was also very active, often fidgeting in her seat and running around. Later in her life, her parents funneled this energy in to extracurriculars such as gymnastics and dancing, which the young girl continues to this day. Because of this trait, Angelica is more likely to act first and think after; a tendency that has caused as many problems as it has solved to be certain. Finally, Angelica held a friendly disposition from the very beginning. She seemed to delight in meeting new people, and this temperament paired with her high emotionality to make her a highly sociable person. She is quick to grasp the desires and thoughts of those she meets and instinctively mold her responses to create a desired effect. Unfortunately, her recent experiences have made her more cynical and sensitive to the negative emotions of other individuals. Consequently, while she is definitely more cautious when approaching strangers, Angelica remains fairly skilled at directing conversations (for a 15 year-old at least). HISTORY: PRE-APOCALYPSE [3 paragraph min. (5 full length sentences at least per paragraph) Cut and Paste Histories will NOT be accepted. Read all Game History threads, and important notices before adapting history accordingly] Angelica Potts was born in Portland, Oregon on a rainy September 12th in 1997 to Bartholomew and Cassandra Potts Her father was a computer engineer who had made a fortune speculating in dot com companies and founded a company to design a touchscreen interface. Cassandra Potts was a gynecologist operating a private clinic on the edge of the redlight district. Besides the usual patients, Angelica's mother also offered her services to the distressed girls in the neighboring district and offered them discounted check-ups after hours. The family of three could not be called rich, but they were comfortable and had no worries about the future. But then came a day that would live in infamy. On September 11, 2001, the Americans were awakened to the precarious position of their wealth and success. The dot com bubble had burst, and Americans felt the fear of death for the first time since the end of the Cold War. The future seemed so insecure now, and a four year-old Angelica picked up on these feelings from her parents. When the U.S. economy came crashing following the bursting of the real estate bubble, Bartholomew and Cassandra grew increasingly worried over their daughter's future. Bartholomew had lost much of his investments in the two crashes, and his development of touch-screen protocols were not attracting buyers or investment from entrepreneurs. Cassandra's job at the clinic was not enough to support the expense and the family was losing money every month. It would be less than a year before the Potts too would have to mortgage their house and become homeless. The future that had seemed so bright five years ago, was suddenly growing grim and dark. Bart remained optimistic that his touchs-creen business would take off. He spent long hours and nights at work, further developing the programs and hardware demos to show to potential clients. However, by then, he had not taken a paycheck for two years and with the hire freeze of most companies, it was unlikely he could get another job on short notice. Still, Bartholomew continued to pour family money to pay for materials and worker salaries. Cassandra did not take his use of the family finances lightly, and the two frequently argued about finances and the budget. During such fights, Angelica would run outside or turn the music up in her room. Angelica witnessed her parents grow distant. Her mother, Cassandra gave up her practice to serve as a doctor at Kaiser hospital. The extra income only prolonged the inevitable, but it was apparent that Bartholomew would have to give up his dream of the touchs-creen or his marriage. Angelica's father could not give up his dream and the Potts officially divorced On April 5, 2005. By this time, Cassandra was dating a doctor practicing internal medicine from her work. Cassandra and Bartholomew knew how this decision would affect Angelica and argued over the effects it would have on their 9 year-old daughter. Obviously, Cassandra wanted to keep custody of her daughter, as she had both the financial means to support her and legal precedence for custody. Bartholomew could argue very little, but Angelica surprised her parents with a precocious request. She asked to stay with her father. While the divorce was heartbreaking for everyone, Cassandra at least had a new boyfriend to help ease her through it. Angelica's father, Bartholomew, looked so pitifully lonely, that she felt he needed her support more than Cassandra did. There were tears and laughter, and the warm pride of parents who knew they had raised their daughter properly. Angelica grew up being raised by her grandmother and father. Bartholomew spent even more time at work and with his daughter to become the father worthy of her. By 2008, with Apple's successful marketing of the iPad and iPhone, the touch-screen market took off and money began coming in to the family. DURING APOCALYPSE (April 7th through April 12th, 2009) [You need to cover what your character was doing during Apocalypse in this section of the application. The summary can be found here: http://z4.invisionfree.com/Xrevolution/ind...?showtopic=4495] Angelica loved her grandmother, whom she affectionately called Nana. However, Nana was old and subject to the many infirmaries that have piled up over the years. In late March, 2009, Nana took a bad fall in the shower. Nana was unsteady on her feet, but seemed to suffer no other ailments. A week later however, Nana began suffering from an inexplicable blindness, sporadic paralysis, and a decline in coordination. These symptoms prompted her hospitalization in which the family learned that Nana's fall had triggered a stroke that had since been untreated. Emergency surgery was required. The surgery was a success, although Nana's prognosis suggested she would be bedridden and blind for the remainder of her days. She was placed under intensive care following the surgery when the Eye of Horus triggered an EMP that cut off power to the hospital. The doctors and staff turned on the back-up generator but subsequent EMP aftershocks constantly interrupted the power. Blind and unable to even move, Nana could only comfort her granddaughter before she passed away. Angelica was only 13 years-old when she saw her Nana die, and she never forgot why. POST-APOCALYPSE [The board runs on current time. Please see Here for board history. Apocalypse lasted for 1 week, two years ago. What have you been doing since then?] With the confusion during apocalypse and the collapse of communication lines along the west coast, it is difficult to determine whether Angelica's mutant power awakened at that time. Whatever the case is however, Angelica began emitting microwaves shortly after. It was not immediately noticeable and her power fluctuated quite erratically in its early stages. It wasn't until Anj was nearly 14 years-old when she and her father began noticing systematic disturbances connected to moments when her emotions ran high. Curious as to why the cellular phones and wireless communications were being disrupted, Bartholomew began scouring the house for sources of microwave transmissions. Much to their shock, the two realized the source to be Angelica. Bartholomew and his daughter had to come to terms that she might be a mutant. Needless to say the shock of the revelation produced a small EMP shock that only confirmed the pair's fears. Angelica and Bartholomew did their own research on mutant powers and development, using the internet and gathering information from scholarly journals on the topic. Needless to say, the information they found was not comforting. Mutations typically manifest around the time of puberty, between the ages of 12 and 16, and often with a powerful outburst that was followed by a more subdued and gradual maturation of the mutant power. If Angelica were to follow that trend, the first instance of her power may have been during the week of Apocalypse, where an EMP or microwave burst shut down the life support and killed Nana. It wasn't certain if she followed the trend or not, and there was no way to prove or disprove it, but the possibility racked Anj with guilt. Bartholomew spent more time with his daughter, trying to comfort her and convince her that she wasn't to blame. He at least, certainly never blamed his Angel for what happened to Nana. It took a few months, but Angelica was slowly coming around when she stumbled across a call on Nana's old-fashioned answering machine for Bartholomew. He had been diagnosed with lung cancer a few weeks ago, and his doctor was desperately asking him to come in to answer some questions and review his options. It was terrible news made all the more awful because he chose not to confide in her about it. In that childish, self-centered, teenage psychology, Angelica could only think she was to blame. She had killed her Nana and was now killing her father. Unable to face her father, the distressed teenager ran out of the house to think things over and come to grips with herself. That was the last instance Bartholomew or his neighbors saw of Angelica. SAMPLE RP POST: [at least 200 words- though more would be favorable. MUST be as the character you are applying for. No cut and paste from non-related sites. No full bold or colored dialogue.] |

Punches from the Punch Dimension

A couple of things here. First, you need to register under your characters real name or codename. Let staff know what you want this changed to. Second, I am really uncomfortable with the drastic change in Angelica's origin, namely the traumatic events at the S&M club and on from there. Granted, we aren't strictly 616, obviously, but this is a change so completely, that the character you're playing is not Firestar but an OC that shares her name. I'm fine if you play an OC with the same powers, but I can't approve this as being Firestar. |

First, thanks for the quick reply. Unfortunately, the name firestar was already taken by the time I found the board. So I thought I'd go with an online handle and ask you to sort it out later. If possible, I'd like for an admin to change the handle to 'Nova' or 'Firestar', depending on the ruling on the explicitness of her history. I did take quite a few creative liberties with Firestar's story, as I wanted a grittier superhero with a history grounded in contemporary events. I do agree however that I went past the publishing limits of Marvel, and she became dissociated from the original character. If the history is too offensive for the board, I can remove the part of the club and write something about her turning delinquent. I will keep her morally ambiguous however as I would like to roleplay the eventual choice she makes to choose sides in the mutant-humans debate though. Otherwise, if it is acceptable as is, I will take up your suggestion and submit the new character as an original character. Albeit one that has significant similarities with Firestar. |

Hey Michelle. Thank you for your interest in XMR. We have considered this matter very carefully and while we encourage the freedom of creativity on XMR, we are not going to condone anything like the type of child sexual abuse in your character's history. No. Just no. The events in this history with the whole kiddie-torture/rape-porn are quite honestly, really disturbing and smack of being all dark and gritty for the sake of drama. All characters are entitled to some level of drama, but this is just beyond reasonable and could be much better handled and represented to boot. Beyond the obvious flaws, you don't even seem to understand S&M practices, which shows me you've not exactly put careful consideration and research into this and again, it's the worst sort of trauma for the sake of giving the character an edge. Honestly, I would not have such a problem if this was happening to an adult. But it isn't, it's a minor and we could seriously get in trouble for having something like this on our site and quite frankly, the way you present it is not worth the risk, by any stretch of the imagination. Additionally, what is she even going to do as a 15 year old Other? Almost all of our teen characters are X-students. Do you expect her to be recruited? What are your plans? Finally; if she is an OC you need to change the first name as well, and actually make her an OC, otherwise this is still going to be a loose template and a lazy conversion effort. If you have any problems with anything I have said, I'm more than happy to explain things in depth to you. We'd like to work with you, to balance things out and set you up with a character more befitting this sort of site, but there is absolutely no way the character will fly here, as she stands. |

Hmm, thanks for the input. It's given me some ideas of how to rewrite the character. It might take a few days or a week to draft everything in to something acceptable. While i revise the character, I've removed the offending segments from the application. I'll post in here again once I'm done. Thanks for your patience and time. I do have a couple questions though: Is it possible to roleplay this character's recruitment in to the school, or should I just begin already enrolled? If the latter, can I create a flashback scene where the character is recruited (considering it will take time to find players willing to rp with me for it)? |

Please take your time in updating, but if you need help make sure you ask, don't be shy about it as its what we're around for. You can begin enrolled, or play out a recruitment. It really is up to you, but recruitment is only recommended if you have a solid plan about it. Mainly because as you're new, it'll be no fun if you need to wait to see how your recruitment would go, before being able to post at the school. You can certainly flashback recruitment, if you want to start play with her already around the school. It's a smart compromise, but again it helps to have a solid idea of how you want it to go. Anything else, please feel free to ask. |
