POWERS
Malice likes to call it her "Corruption."
GENERAL DESCRIPTION: Malice's mutant powers are not anything overly special. She is able to go into a complete shadow-like form being, completely black. Her form remains solid, but tendrils of dark smoke drift in and out of one another along the entire body. Her eyes become open slits of gray mist that glow eerily behind the tendrils. They're the only things that stand out in the darkness of her mutated form. The only addition to these features is that she is slightly swifter in movement.

She cannot do anything special, she just has this ability. It is more of a self-defense than anything. It is good for moving through darkness and scaring, or startling, those who attack her, or those she does not like too much. The smokey tendrils are useful, because they help to provide a confusing illusion for the attacker, or victim, by continuously slowly moving about her body. It makes it seem as if she is not solid, or that she is not a whole being, which adds to her spooky appearance.
WEAKNESS:
Malice is no stronger in her mutated form, so the key to her surviving, if in battle, is to have faster reflexes and mobility. When she has taken on this appearance, she loses the ability to speak loudly and her verbal speech is reduced to whispers. If it is not dark, wherever she is, she is easily spotted and can be a pretty easy target. Her mutated form does not add any type of armor to her body, even though it looks like she is wearing a swirling suit.
PERSONALITY
Orianna Cathers pretends to be a very friendly person, on the outside. She keeps her head up, back straight, has a hand ready to shake whenever greeting or leaving, and tries to pay attention to anything that is said to her. But, inside of course, she is constantly questioning and plotting on people and things that exist around her.

From the way she dresses, it is obvious that she really is not too concerned with what others think of her. As long as the people are not of importance, which most of them are not. She is only interested in people that can provide a benefiting relationship between them. If she is going to give, she wants to receive, as well. Inside, she is a bit selfish, but as she grew up, she realized that, in order to survive comfortably, you have to be selfish. She thinks of the consequences of her actions, but only after deciding what she really wants and needs to do first.

In the end, her main concern is herself. She does like to feel needed, though, and will do whatever is necessary to get the approval of the few people she chooses to impress. But they have to prove, themselves, to be interesting and useful enough to provoke a willingness in the young woman to try.
HISTORY: PRE-APOCALYPSE
Orianna Cathers was raised by her mother, Kristine Chambers (she went by many last names over the entirety of raising her children), with her older brother, Aris Caudill. There was a younger brother, as well, but she refuses to call him a relative, due to the fact that he was a traitor and never even attempted to keep in touch with his family. Being the younger of the siblings, by six years, everything she learned was taught by Aris. Kristine always worked, and dated many men, so she was usually never around to teach her children anything. This is why Orianna can sometimes be very tomboyish. Her father, Jeffery Cathers, died when she was almost two-years-old, due to electricution at his workplace. So, Aris was almost like a father figure, as well.

Going to school was difficult. She never tried to fit in, so she was constantly bullied and ridiculed, just like any other child that is obviously different. She made friends here and there, companions that entertained her for some periods of time before she got bored of them, or found them annoying. Those who chose to stay around her realized that she could be a good leader and a good friend, but she dared not let anyone get too close. Every time she seemed to trust someone, they would turn around and show a more cruel side to their personality.

While in high school, sixteen and at Junior level, the bullying really became more than she could bare. Not just from fellow students, but from teachers, instructors, and those who were supposed mentors, as well. But Orianna never showed much emotion to them. She kept the bulk of her feelings bottled up inside, hurting, causing anxiety and a bit of sadness. Eventually, it became too much. She was at home, alone (Aris had moved into a house in another city to share rent with some of his best and closest friends), watching TV, when she heard noise outside her bedroom window. When she looked, the best friend of the nearest neighbor was out on the sidewalk, smoking a cigarette and looking into her house.

Orianna went out to ask him what his problem was, why he had been watching her house, and his excuse was just that he was out smoking and was trying to see what she was viewing on TV. She did not think it was too truthful, but it was such a silly excuse that she thought it maybe could have been. They talked for a little bit and he asked if she would like to hang out with the boy that was actually her neighbor and himself. She really should not have gone.

She followed him and they hung out in the woods, behind one of the houses. It was dark and cool out, which she liked. TV bored her, anyway. She needed more entertainment than what it could provide. Everything was going smoothly until, what she assumed, a pillow slip was pulled over her head by someone from behind and her legs were swept out from under her. She was carried into the woods, punching and kicking, until they found a clearing, and dropped onto the ground. As she quickly took off the slip, she saw that one of the boys had a video camera, the other had a knife, and was already moving toward her, grabbing at her clothes.

In that instant, something clicked in her mind. She felt something pulling at her brain as she tried to get away from her attackers and gave in. Within her thick hair, tendrils of darkness began to swiftly cover every inch of her body. The boy directly in front of her was taken aback and stepped away from her, startled. As it consumed her, she tried to scream, angrily, enraged at what they were trying to do to her, whatever they thought they could. Nothing came out except hissing, but she did not care. Malice quickly got up and ran around the boy with the knife, lunging at the camera the other held. Grabbing the lense in her palm the other wrapping around the handle, she wrestled it out of his hands and began beating him with it. The teen who had been so menacing with his weapon ran away, not knowing what they had provoked.

Malice did not kill the boy with the camera. She did not even knock him unconcious. But he was bruised and bloodied as he tried to fight to get away from her. She remembers him calling her a demon, a monster, among other things, as he scrambled out of the clearing and ran home. She had looked into the lense a final time, before tossing the camera to the ground, giving it a good look at the being responsible for all the noise, just in case anyone cared to watch the video.

Since then, she has been working odd jobs at clothing stores and other companies that would hire someone with her style. The young woman tries to control her mutation. She never went back to school, but her mother did not seem to care. Living from apartment to apartment, trying to find the next cheapest thing to go along with the minimum wage she made working, she had to begin growing up faster than she would have liked.

DURING APOCALYPSE (April 7th through April 12th, 2009)
At nineteen, Orianna had already begun traveling here and there among some of the states. She grew up in a small town, but wanted bigger and better things. Like a comfortable place to live, people that she could agree with, and a justice that never seemed to come. But what she did not expect was something war-like to come crashing down on her life.

With everything else a girl could go through in their lives, up to that age, it was overwhelming. She did not know what to do, where to go, where to hide, or what she could ever do to make things right. Not that she cared for the lives of people around her, but she did not like the idea of innocent children getting caught in the crossfire. It killed her inside not to be able to do anything to protect them. She was not strong, she had nothing to give. All she could do was feel horrible about everything going on around her.

For the most part, she did her best to avoid the outside world, unless her employment required her to be a part of it. She was lucky that, in the area where she lived, it was not directly affected by whatever was going on with fellow mutants. Lives went on, things were intact. People wept over the news and prayed to a God that did not seem to exist. If He did, he did not appear to care very much. Orianna just kept living life, looking down any time someone tried to bring up any sort of chaos and changing the subject.

Whenever things began going well, near the end, she took notice to the groups that were involved in stopping whatever was trying to destroy everything. One in particular really caught her attention; the Hellfire Club. They seemed... Sinister. She also thought that the Brotherhood was slightly interesting, but not quite as much as the former. Hearing about them made her envious. It brought new emotions toward the problem her world was facing. They looked strong, confident, and untouchable, in her opinion. Once the Apocalypse was proclaimed over, she made her decision to head to New York, where she assumed they were still located.

POST-APOCALYPSE
Since the Apocalypse, Orianna has been doing, basically, the same exact thing she was before. The young woman manages to find job and home when she needs it. She still has yet to meet a member of the Hellfire Club, but inside, though she would never admit it to anyone that she could feel this way about anything, she would give anything to be a part of something where mutants could control their powers and take care of themselves and each other. No, she does not want the lovey-dovey family companion thing. She does not want a bunch of hugging cuddling friends that take each other out to eat tacos and ice cream. She wants a place where she can belong. Inside, she hopes that, by meeting these people, she can find answers as to why "special" people get burdened with mutations and how they manage to make themselves happy with them.

Orianna also wanted to find a way to deal with those who bully and bring harm to those who are defenseless and innocent. If she is denied any entrance into the Hellfire Club, she would be fine. Eventually, the girl will move on to the next best thing. She wants a way to get back at the people who make lives miserable for their own amusement and wants to find someone who could give her all the information she needs.

SAMPLE RP POST:

Old parks had a way of making everything seem "okay." The simplicity, the emptiness, the lack of cars and obstacles to ruin the view of its nature. It was peaceful, which was why Malice chose to spend her free time there. When off work, the southern lady in rocker clothes would come to this place to think and contemplate.

There were a lot of things that bothered her and ran through her mind. Daily worries, like bills and food, among other things, such as where she is going to go or what she is going to do when the next month arrives and she can no longer take staying stationary in a some-what familiar environment. That is when things got weird, where she would take off and start over somewhere new, when things became too familiar and it seemed as if everything were repeating itself. She desired excitement and a feeling of being needed and wanted, without having to have too much responsibility, but just enough to keep her busy. When she could not find it wherever she was living, she would just get up and take the few things she owned elsewhere.

Orianna had thought about, from time to time, what it would be like to be in a relationship. It was the last thing she would ever worry about and it was not much of a concern, finding "love" and spending the rest of her life with someone one day. Human companionship bugged her and turned her off. She did not like thinking about having to make someone else happy all of the time and doing things to please them. At one point in her life, she had tried sex, multiple times, but it did not entertain her as much as other people would let on. It was boring and meaningless, in her eyes. She had nothing to gain from it. Never in her life will she ever wish to have children, so it is a pointless act.

Yes, she had compassion for them. For the children. She had a small feeling of protection that burdened her mind when she would find them in trouble, or distress. But feeling sorry for them and wanting them to be happy is no sign that she would ever have her own. Why bring a child into a world where it will only be mistreated, abused, and grow into depression?

The breeze felt good on her skin. She was wearing one of her many pairs of shorts with a cut-off tank top, tennis shoes, and sunglasses. As she lay on the park bench, she let her long, thick hair fall over the side, enjoying the weight of it on her scalp. The trees above her, though stripped of some of their leaves, continued to do their best to block the sky, keeping too much sunlight from hitting her skin. Every once in a while, her hand would slip to one of her small pockets, feeling for her phone and checking to see if she had any missed texts.

((I apologize if it's not very interesting. It's 3:00am where I live [after sitting up all night messing with this] and I did as best as I could. Hope to see you sooon!))

Hey Kirsten,

Thanks for deciding to join our site and add to our character base, but I’m going to be honest from the start in saying you’re going to need to put some real effort into reworking this application.

We unfortunately need you to change her codename; Malice is a character from canon and your name has already led to confusion within the site. If you let me or another member of the admin know, we can fix your board name. We’re sorry, but we need to keep things free for any future plot or concept where we use Malice as she does have potential.

1. For things like base of operations and registered with SHIELD, you need to answer. Base of operations can just be her apartment or ‘Mutant Town’ or wherever she is right now. The other is a yes or no answer, based on if she’s been in trouble with the law as a mutant or voluntarily registered (yes) or hasn’t (no).

2. Powers:

Shadow powers are technically banned as most of them stem from darkforce. We’ve had a talk about this and we do need you to swap your concept; we do sometimes make concessions for banned abilities, but we need to see a really unique or interesting take on the power. I’m really not trying to slam you, but you need to think a little more broadly; especially if you want your character to be Hellfire Club, as so far there is very little else in your app that leads me to see Club potential but I’ll talk about this later on.

3. Personality:

Personality is alright, if a little brief. I don’t necessarily think you need to add anything, as long as you just get everything else in the app up to scratch.

4. History:

What is the significance of this ‘traitor’ brother? It seems a bit random and throwaway.

Why was she so bullied? I don’t understand why teachers bully her as well; it just seems more fuel for more drama.

The near rape also seems fuel for a dramatic emergence of her powers. Not all mutations are triggered by stress and if this is your only reason for doing it, it is the worst sort of stress. It also seems to be a reason to tie into giving her a lack of sexuality – you realise that the Hellfire Club is based within an establishment that amongst other things, offers BDSM and sexual experiences? How would that sit with her? But don’t get me wrong, I actually have zero problem with her being disinterested in sex, just the reasons seem extreme and I want to know she’d be okay with what goes on in the Club.

In Apocalypse, where is she even? I don’t even get a sense of what is happening in this section. I am also at a loss of how she identified the Hellfire Club, as to the world, the Hellfire Club are basically like a really high society, oldschool members only Club and no one outside of the Inner Circle and those who know about the Inner Circle (such as X-men etc) even know they’re mutants.

Basically, you need to tidy this section up. You have the right idea but I think it would help if you were more exact about where she was, what she was doing, etc. Like if she was in New York, you could talk about War’s attack and the big hurricane.

Apoc was back in April 2009 it’s now Jan 2013. So in Post Apocalypse, I need to see a little more, but mainly about the site wide plots that have happened since; if she was in the area you might want to talk about Purifiers and it would be helpful if you could include something about the Skrull plot.

5. Sample:

Sample is fine, you can obviously write as well. You just need to get the rest of the application into shape.

Finally, a note about Hellfire:

You probably are aware that Hellfire is invite only, but what that actually means is that you must come and talk to myself or to the player of the Shroud and let us know what your character will offer the Hellfire Club. While the HFC mainly inhabit a very grey area, they have the capability to be worse than the Brotherhood, with the added danger that they are completely sane and like to pull on the background strings to make things collapse rather than blowing it up. If you want to really work on being in the HFC, then we’ll help you, but we need to see more from the character: if she isn’t rich or from a background with an inherited membership, then she needs to be very useful instead.

I am sorry if a lot of this just seems like a slam; we don’t particularly enjoy slamming apps or asking people to change things. You’ve got potential and there is some interesting stuff here, but a lot needs peeling back and refreshing instead. If you have any questions or difficulties, the please contact myself or another member of staff. Please respond to the thread when your edits are done and please take your time.
