[/align] BASIC INFORMATION CANON OR ORIGINAL: Canon AFFILIATION: SHIELD FULL NAME: Theodore Altman (also "Dorrek" among Skrulls) CODENAME: Hulkling NICKNAMES: In high school he was "Teddy"; he prefers "Ted" now. CURRENT AGE: ~20 DATE OF BIRTH: December 20, 1992 MARITAL STATUS: Single SEXUAL ORIENTATION: Homosexual BASE OF OPERATIONS: SHIELD Helicarrier TIME AT INSTITUTE: 2+ years REGISTERED WITH SHIELD? Yes HOMETOWN: Burlington, Vermont KNOWN RELATIVES: Z'Cann, aka Allen Siciliano Maternal grandfather N'ala, aka Theodora Siciliano - Maternal grandmother Son'ja, aka Sonja Altman - Mother Joseph Altman - Legal (though not biological) father; estranged Biological father unknown PHYSICAL APPEARANCE Ted's appearance varies. He has a default "human" appearance and a default "monstrous" appearance, though; he is almost always in one or the other. Human: HEIGHT: 6'2" BUILD: Athletic, broad-shouldered, football player's build EYES: Blue HAIR: Blond SKIN: Caucasian, pale DISTINGUISHING MARKS: Numerous piercings in both ears CLOTHING STYLE: Tight, brightly colored shirts; blue jeans; boots. He has a battered old leather jacket he's very fond of, and a charm bracelet he wears most of the time (a sentimental gift from a boyfriend a while back). UNIFORM: Standard-issue SHIELD uniform. Made of unstable molecules, stretches to fit as he changes size/shape. Monstrous: HEIGHT: 7' BUILD: Built like a tank EYES: Blue HAIR: Blond SKIN: Green DISTINGUISHING MARKS: Green armored skin, clawed hands. Sometimes he has large leathery wings. UNIFORM: Modified SHIELD uniform. Made of unstable molecules, stretches to fit as he changes size/shape. When he knows he'll be in this form for a while, he sometimes carries heavier-than-standard weaponry. POWERS GENERAL DESCRIPTION: Superhuman Strength and Durability: In human forms, Ted can press 20-30 tons, shrug off knifeblades and small-arms fire, leap three or four stories from a standing start. In monstrous form, he can press 70 tons comfortably, and is significantly more durable. Shapeshifting: Ted can change his physical composition by an effort of will to any physical structure he can imagine. He can grow extra limbs, clothing, body armor; he can alter his body's material composition. Shifting between his default human/monstrous forms is relatively easy; he can do that in a few seconds without much exertion or concentration, and he can maintain either form even while unconscious. Stress or extreme exertion can trigger an unwilling shift into monstrous form, though he's gotten better at avoiding this. Minor variations on either of those forms (changing superficial appearance, lengthening limbs, etc.) is a little harder; it takes 10-15 seconds and some concentration. Maintaining the change is trivial, but he must remain conscious to do so. More significant shifts (changing size, mass, material composition, adopting a significantly different body shape, growing major new features) can take several minutes and require significant concentration; if too tired or distracted he may not be able to do it at all. Maintaining such a form requires attention, similar to adopting a fake accent for a normal human. He can't adopt liquid or gaseous forms, nor exotic or high-energy materials (no vibranium, adamantium, unobtanium, etc.). Accurately duplicating a specific target's appearance, voice, etc. is something he's currently learning how to do, but he can't do it reliably. Duplicating more fundamental attributes (e.g., copying an eagle's distance vision or a snake's venom) is something he is physically capable of, but doesn't yet know how to control or initiate at all. He will be getting better at this as he practices. In theory, Ted's power allows him to duplicate the powers of other superhumans by adopting their form. In practice, he's not even close to being able to do that, and won't be for quite some time. Flight: Ted can fly in monstrous form by means of his wings. He can't fly fast or maneuver particularly well, and he can't stay aloft for more than half an hour or so. He can carry about three hundred pounds, though that reduces his endurance. His speed, maneuverability, and endurance will improve as he practices. Rapid Healing: One aspect of his shapeshifting is the ability to regenerate cellular damage. He can heal a significant wound in a matter of minutes even when he's unconscious; faster when he's concentrating on it. He can resist toxins, diseases, etc. the same way, although here too being aware of the damage enhances the effect. Tradecraft: Ted is being trained in the skills of a SHIELD agent: combat, resisting interrogation, stealth, infiltration, deduction, that sort of thing. He's still a novice, but he's learning from the best. He's a lot sneakier in human form than in monstrous form. (Duh.) WEAKNESS: Though Ted is extremely durable, he can still be injured or overpowered by a sufficiently powerful force. He is more vulnerable to energy-based attacks (fire, electricity, etc.) than physical ones, and marginally more vulnerable to piercing or bladed weapons than impact ones. He has no exceptional resistance to other kinds of attacks (telepathy, suffocation, sonics, etc.). PERSONALITY The most important thing to know about Teddy is that he wants to be a hero, and he always has. He idolized superheroes when he was younger, and the possibility of becoming one of them is pretty much the most exciting thing ever. In pretty much any crisis situation he asks himself what his superhero idols would do and tries to do that. He judges himself against the same standard, and pretty much always feels he's fallen short. The second-most important thing to know about Teddy is he wants everyone to like him, to approve of him, to be proud of him. This is to some extent a consequence of his father leaving his family when he was a kid, but by now he's internalized it in many different ways. This can cause him enormous anxiety when people want conflicting things from him; negotiating his various responsibilities to SHIELD, to mutant-kind, to his friends, to Billy, to the X-Men, to humanity, and to his family is an ongoing challenge. He worries that SHIELD and the X-Men might end up in open conflict one day and he'll have to choose. When dealing with others Teddy is a consistently decent guy: friendly and gregarious, slow to anger and quick to forgive, easygoing and tolerant of errors and differences but with a strong moral core. He's a good friend and a good man to have at your back. He is loyal and trusting of his friends, perhaps to a fault; it is difficult for him to think badly of someone he's made friends with, even if the evidence piles up against them. He is a decent leader in a crisis, but shies away from leadership roles more generally. Teddy has had some time to assimilate the discovery that he and his family are Skrulls, but it's still something he has trouble with. One consequence of it is that he no longer identifies so much as a "mutant"; he's got bigger fish to fry. He frequently feels alienated and lost and alone. He worries that the Skrulls will return for him some day, and that SHIELD will never really trust him as an agent, and that they or someone else might come after his family seeking revenge for the Skrull invasion, especially if SHIELD ever reveals his alien heritage to the public like they did Havoc's role in Apocalypse. He tries to shrug it off, to tell himself that it doesn't really change anything, but deep down he doesn't believe it. HISTORY: PRE-APOCALYPSE Teddy's story began twenty years ago, when his mother Son'ja fled to Earth from Skrullos with her parents Z'Cann and N'ala. Son'ja was pregnant with a Skrull child, whom she would name Dorrek after a former Skrull King, and whom she somehow knew would be born with a superior genome. Not wanting her son used as a weapon by the Skrulls, she fled, adopting the human identity of "Sonya Siciliano." Shortly after arriving on Earth, she met and seduced a human man, Joseph Altman; not long afterwards, she announced her pregnancy and married Joseph, and some months after that Dorrek was born, officially "Teddy Altman". The different gestation periods of Skrulls and humans, combined with the Skrull shapeshifting ability, made the deception easy; Joseph never doubted the child was his... until when Teddy was three years old Joseph was diagnosed with a hereditable illness and his doctor did a genetic screening of Teddy that revealed Joseph and Teddy were not in fact related. Betrayed and hurt, Joseph divorced Sonya and never spoke to them again. Teddy grew up in a household that was loving and supportive, but also frequently sad. He always assumed that was due to his father's disappearance, though in truth it had more to do with his family being exiles and refugees from their home world. He desperately tried to make friends with the neighborhood kids, but was mostly unsuccessful, and consequently spent a lot of time alone with books, computer games, movies. He became fascinated by the superheroes who regularly appeared on the news, and privately fantasized about becoming one some day and reaping the rewards of fame, adulation, respect. In 2006 Teddy, then 14, underwent a remarkable transformation: he grew five inches and gained a lot of muscle, in a matter of weeks. His skin actually cleared up, his teeth straightened, his hair lightened several shades; he became noticably more attractive. This was an initial manifestation of his shapeshifting ability, transforming him into a more heroic figure, though he didn't know it. His family didn't make a big deal of it, implying that this sort of thing happened sometimes during puberty, so neither did he. He started spending more time in the gym, joined the football team, generally became very popular around school. He also realized he was more interested in his teammates than in the cheerleaders, though he kept that fact mostly to himself. He never forgot what it was like to be a social outcast, though, and spent the next couple of years torn between multiple worlds: popular jock, honors student, D&D-playing geek. DURING APOCALYPSE (April 7th through April 12th, 2009) Teddy was sixteen when Apocalypse began, and spent much of the week in the basement of his mother's house with the rest of his family, mostly ignorant of the world-shaking events that were transpiring. He did his best to help protect his family and their neighbors from the disasters that erupted throughout the Northeast. In the process, he discovered that he was growing stronger and stronger. Afterwards, he joined his neighbors in repairing the damage. Afraid that he'd somehow been affected by the Apocalypse, or that his neighbors would think he had, he kept his newfound strength a secret, even from his family. He also devoured every book, magazine article, news story, web site, and tabloid article he could find about the event and about the heroes who'd helped save the world. POST-APOCALYPSE Life slowly went back to normal for most people, but not for Teddy. He kept growing stronger, enough so that he had to quit playing football for fear of injuring someone. Even that proved insufficient eventually: in May of 2009, near the end of his sophomore year, he tried to break up a fight in the school parking lot and was shoved hard into the path of a car that was pulling out of its space. His powers manifested instinctively and dramatically then, as he mutated into a huge green muscle-bound giant. Everyone freaked out, including him; he ran away, several students were injured in the rush to get away from him, and the police were called in. This was misreported as a Hulk sighting, and SHIELD was called in. It did not take SHIELD long to determine that Teddy was not the Hulk, and had not really done anything wrong, he'd just been frightened by his own transition and run away. (That's how Teddy got his codename, actually. Quoth the head field agent: "It's not, repeat NOT, the Hulk. It's just a... hulkling.") SHIELD kept him in protective custody for a while, ran some tests, then transfered him to the Xavier Institute, which he attended for his junior and senior years (2009-2011). He made a number of friends there. Then the Institute was destroyed by the Purifier attack of 2011, an event he still has nightmares about, and he devoted himself to helping clean up. Afterwards, Teddy joined the rest of the students in the Savage Land, where he was promoted to Junior level X-Man, as well as officially graduated high school. Later, when his friend Tommy (aka Speed) was revealed as a Skrull impostor, Teddy returned to New York and began working with Maria Hill and SHIELD to find the real Teddy. About a month later, his mother revealed the truth to him about his Skrull heritage, and SHIELD took his family into "protective custody." Shortly thereafter the Skrull Invasion of 2012 began, during which he fell under the effects of the Complacency Wave, which led to him fighting his former allies. When the Skrull were finally defeated, their victims freed, and the Wave destroyed, Teddy decided to continue working more formally with Hill and with SHIELD rather than return to the X-Men. He officially became a trainee agent. He's been in training ever since, learning tradecraft and greater control of his powers, as well as pursuing an undergraduate degree in business administration through an online university with covert ties to SHIELD. With a few exceptions he remains on good terms with his former classmates, teachers, and teammates, though college and SHIELD training haven't left him with much free time to pursue a personal life. He is still a SHIELD trainee, not yet a full agent, though he sometimes gets pulled into missions where his powers come in handy. He is publically known as a superstrong mutant and as a SHIELD intern, and is commonly (and mistakenly) believed to be some relation to the Hulk and/or She-Hulk, neither of whom he has ever met. He is not widely known as a shapeshifter outside of SHIELD and Xavier's, and his Skrull heritage is a closely kept secret. SAMPLE RP POST: (May of 2009, John F.Kennedy High School, Burlington VT) As he cut through the school parking lot after class, Teddy didn't initially recognize the sounds coming from the other end of it as those of a fight. It was only when a few other boys noticed the struggle and began yelling "Fight! Fight!" that it caught his attention. His first impulse was to dive in and split the fight up before someone got hurt, and he sprinted towards the growing crowd with that in mind. But he checked himself after he'd covered less than half the distance. What could he really do? If he tried to break the fighters up he ran a real risk of doing them more damage than they'd do to each other. His strength had been growing steadily for years, and lately it had far outstripped his ability to control it. He'd had to quit the football team this year; in fact, he'd pretty much dropped out of all sports outside of the occassional pick-up game of Ultimate. Not only was it just not fair to the other players, he was too worried: of revealing himself as a freak, of getting his mom into trouble, of accidentally hurting someone. The crazy mutant war everyone was calling the Apocalypse had only been over for a few weeks, and he'd been hearing a lot of pretty nasty anti-mutant sentiment as a consequence of it. But he couldn't just stand by and do nothing! After dithering for a few minutes, while the sounds of fists hitting flesh and his stupid classmates cheering came from the crowd, Teddy finally made up his mind: there were more ways to break up a fight than just throwing muscle around. "Hey!" he shouted, running up to the edge of the growing crowd, "Break it up!" A few kids right next to him looked sheepish and began to wander off, but mostly everyone ignored him. He pulled out his phone. "I SAID BREAK IT UP!" he bellowed, "OR I'M CALLING THE COPS!!!" Even as he said it, he realized he was being goofy; the local police were still pretty overwhelmed by disaster recovery efforts, and would not respond to such a trivial problem with any speed. And pretty much everyone knew it. "Altman, shut up and grow a pair, willya!" came a jeering voice from nearby; he recognized it as Gilbert Marcovicci, a thorn in his side since he'd first started at this school. "Just because you turned into some kind of faggot all of a sudden don't mean the rest of us gotta act like little girls!" Teddy's lips pressed into a thin line, and he trembled as his hands balled into fists. Right at that moment, what he wanted to do was throw Gil against a wall as hard as he could, but he knew better... it would kill the kid. And Gil was a jerk, but he didn't deserve that. Unfortunately, while Teddy was able to control himself, if barely, Gil didn't seem at all interested in doing so; he was plowing his way through the crowd until he loomed face-to-face with Teddy. "Calm down, Gil," Teddy said, as neutrally as he could, "I don't have any problem with you, I just want to break that fight up before somebody gets hurt." "Well, I've got money riding on that fight, so I've got a problem with that," the beefy linebacker shot back, shoving hard against Teddy's chest. The blond took a hasty step back, not wanting to escalate this into a fight that would probably leave Gil injured, but his assailant kept closing the distance between them as quickly as he backed away. He didn't see the car backing up out of the space behind them. Whether Gil saw it or not, he'd never know. Either way, the first he knew of it was when its rear bumper hit him. It didn't hurt, really, but he lost his balance and fell, and the tires rolled over his leg and his chest. That hurt -- hurt a lot, actually -- and that's when everything changed. "Holy crap!" he heard Gil's voice, suddenly much less belligerent. "He's one of those monsters! Somebody call the cops!" Monster? Teddy thought, confused and bewildered and frightened as his body seemed to explode from the inside out. Where? |
