Thursday, February 07, 2013. An hour after the setting of the sun in Mutant Town... Metal scraped on concrete as a manhole cover was slid open. A huge paw of a hand reached out from the sewer and grabbed a hold of the ledge. After a second passed another reached out as a large presence pulled himself out from below and into the surface. The figure stretched his arms and took in a lungful of fresh air that was like a commodity to someone like him, to someone that spent his days in the darkness of the underground labyrinth he called home. Rarely did Sunder make an appearance topside unless a specific mission required this from the seven footer. He usually chose to remain hidden in the tunnels below where his face could easily be hidden in the shadows they provided. Tonight, though, he needed to escape; If only for a couple of hours. There was another reason why he decided to come to Mutant Town. He heard stories in Old City about this place and he wanted to see if they were true. Could this town really offer a form of safety for mutantkind? He'd heard other likely tales about Sanctuary but he knew better than to go there. Even from the alley where he rose from his tomb, he could see men and women freely going about their lives as if nothing could harm them. He was hard pressed to identify a mutant from a human. It wasn't like Old City or the subterranean world lit by artificial lighting at all. Here there seemed to be a sort of natural glow that coveted the town and its citizens. It was... Nice. After giving it some thought he decided that he wanted to see more. He pulled his tattered hood over his head, placed his hands in his sweater's pockets and stepped out of the shady alley and into the city streets. There was an attempt at being inconspicuous but that's hard to do when your name was Sunder. Some didn't even bother looking his way. Others couldn't help but look his way. Still, there was a sense of acceptance, or maybe Sunder was only feeling what he wanted to feel. Either way, the city was beautiful as were its inhabitants and The Morlock felt like a tourist enjoying the sites of a far away land. Eventually, the walk led him down a corner to where a group of people were standing around a fellow with a handful of flyers. Everybody seemed to be interested in what the man was saying as the huddled crowd listened in amazement. Sunder curiously made his way over, standing behind the crowd as to not startle them. "This is a next step towards mutant interaction within the community. I implore all of you to take a look at these pamphlets. They will explain what Mutants for Mutant Association is all about." The man then began handing out flyer after flyer to anybody that would take it until coming to a stop in front of Sunder. He slowly looked up and the sight of the face under the hood accompanied by a growl forced the man to take a step back. "We don't want any trouble." Perhaps it was harsh for the man to assume Sunder was a villain there to do harm but then again, when you looked like he did, it was expected. Sunder smirked at his reaction. There's reaction Sunder wait for, he thought. "I guess no room for Sunder in little club?" The words practically came out in a low roar as he removed his hood to reveal his damaged face. A few people gasped, some immediately left the area and others stood by and watched as Sunder slowly lurched forward to snatch the flyer from the man's hand. The man tried to walk around him but Sunder stepped in front of him to block his path. "And here Sunder thought mutants of all kind were welcomed in Mutant Town?" The sentence was a statement but also worded in a question. A question that would be answered not by the male but by the voice of a mysterious female. |

Ever since the group had surfaced, Alix had been watching them. It wasn't that they weren't good-- everything she'd seen thus far had left people feeling good and happy with their lives. Content, even. But after years of having watched group after group gravitate in one direction or another when it came to the status of humans... it was, in all, something that made her nervous. Especially since there were no known ties to any group that she'd already known. Xcorps hadn't heard of them, Xfactor and XFI and Xmen-- she couldn't even pinpoint ties to the darker likes of brotherhood and Hellfire club. Maybe they were just normal people--mutants-- looking to better themselves. It was admittedly nice for once to not be the ones responsible for the pep talks after tragedies. But as nice as it was it didn't change the fact that after everything that had happened to Mutant Town in the past years she was wary of anyone she didn't know when it came to spreading any kind of flyers or information. Even something so harmless as a support group. She might've grown up outside of Mutant Town and it might've been something that had started far after she'd been young, but it didn't change that Mutant Town had grown up around Xfactor and by default XFI. So in some part, she'd always feel responsible for them. ::They are.:: Came a calm and pleasant voice that was, despite it's warmness, strange. In all it sounded like a normal voice and felt like a voice-- but in all actually it sounded straight into Sunder's mind and those around it. A glance was shot towards the male who returned an apologetic look to the woman who stepped forward. There was a finesse to speaking in thought, however, and while some could be incredibly intrusive and downright debilitating, there was a soft quality to her manner that made things alot less difficult to adjust to. Beyond that and a set of overly bright, strange eyes, she was no different from any young woman that might've resided in the city. But unlike the standard fair that Sunder might've encountered in the past, She did not recoil in fear or revulsion, but instead stared upwards without the faintest hint of restraint. ::You're always welcome in Mutant Town, so long as you aren't here to start trouble.:: More pleasantness and the sort of understanding that only a mind reader could really hold. She could tell, despite the gruff manner he gave, that trouble wasn't his intent and so she smiled upwards at the behemoth. Comparatively he towered over her in the degree of opposites that was rarely so obvious as it was now. She was a mutant of the mind and her stature and form reflected that. He? Physical. It looked utterly dangerous and a few-- if they hadn't known her-- might've thought her completely mental for even beginning to approach someone like him. But no matter the harmless look she might've presented, she was far more capable than appearances gave credit for. He might've even known her. There'd been a time in the past year where Callisto and she had been enemies. But that'd been a skrull and after the help she'd given during the attack on the morlocks, all forgiven. Still-- after the encounters she'd had with the Morlocks she could recognize him as one of them. She'd never met him, but it was hard to miss someone like him even if her time had been primarily devoted to helping Scatterbrain recover emotionally from the sugarman attacks. ::I'm Alix-- a member of Xfactor and Xf-Investigations. You're Sunder, right? From the Morlocks. Welcome to mutant Town.:: If she was afraid of him, how he looked, or otherwise perturbed it didn't show in the faintest through any aspect of her tone or body language. |

Words appeared like a jumbled mess as he struggled to make sense of the pamphlet. Sunder could barely make out MMA's message for he is barely able to read. An annoyance had crept up his spine thanks to the speech giver's unintentionally judgmental attitude. The last thing The Morlock expected to find in a town for mutants was fear for how he looked. In a way it was understandable, but in another it was unbearable. He failed to recognize that he was partly to blame thanks to his aggressive nature. There was no need for the confrontational questioning but Sunder couldn't help himself. He always felt as though people were pushing him up against some imaginary wall, testing him to find his soft spots, and he would never allow himself to fail this nonexistent conspiratorial probing of his strengths and weaknesses. Moments ago, the pamphlet passer was full of confident words but now he stood stuttering and struggling to find the right words to quell this beast's rising aggression. The way he curved his scarred mouth into a smirk, the way his body tensed up, the way his eyes narrowed into black slits, these were all clear indications that the giant was reaching a point that would only lead to regret later on in his already tragic life. Sunder's anger had taken a hold and truthfully, any words that came out of this man's mouth would've only worked to light the fuse that had been accidentally set. There was no need for such hostilities but somehow, a gentle stroll down Mutant Town's streets led Sunder to possible bloodshed. That is until a voice in his head quieted down the building rage. ::They are.:: The calming voice came from nowhere and caught Sunder by surprise. At first, he thought it was one of the many disembodied voices that often plagued his head. Only he had never heard this one. This one was sweet and somehow nurturing. This one was nothing like the harshness of the ones he knew too well. This distraction was enough for the MMA representative to calm down and step aside as a lovely young lady walked out from the onlooking crowd. Bright eyes met his gaze and Sunder knew he'd seen that warmth before. He shook his head and rubbed his eyes in disbelief as if he were seeing a mirage of somebody he use to know. Only he never really knew her. He'd only seen her interacting with his family once or twice but in Sunder's simple thinking that was enough to consider her a friend to The Morlocks. ::You're always welcome in Mutant Town, so long as you aren't here to start trouble.:: He heard the words but didn't see her lips move. He was stunned to say the least. There was a need to ask her how she did it. How she was able to talk without moving her lips. He'd encountered telepaths before but somehow this was like magic to him and no matter how many times it was explained he never quite got it. He refrained from asking though and just kept eye contact with the young lady as she, without fear or disgust, approached the seven footer. There was a huge size difference and Sunder noticed some people's disapproval of her approach but she didn't seem swayed by anything and the closer she got, the more she spoke, the less Sunder was angered. ::I'm Alix-- a member of Xfactor and Xf-Investigations. You're Sunder, right? From the Morlocks. Welcome to mutant Town.:: She clearly wasn't afraid and by this point Sunder had calmed down enough to be social. In a deep almost growl voice he responded. "Sunder is who I am. He knows Alix. She help Scatterbrain." He took a pause as he also remembered a dark time between Callisto and her. "I even remembers war with Callisto... That was different time." The rough and tough demeanor that shielded him from the outside world began to dissipate; Replaced with a side of Sunder only seen by those in his underworld family. "Sunder is happy to meet Alix. He did not mean to cause scene. Sunder get angry sometimes. He is stupid and don't know why. I only wanted to see city but man speak of helping mutants and I can't help but listen." He looked down at the pamphlet. Now more than ever he wished he could read better than he was capable but he didn't want to share that information with someone he'd just met. "He does not believe them... Do you?" He looked down at her as if asking to explain what was on the pamphlet. It was his innocent way of interrogation without the broken bones, blood and gore. "No man ever wants to truly help mutants. There is always catch." Broken English aside, there was a hint of brightness in him. This brightness yearned to know more. |

::I'm happy to meet you too-- I understand. It's a different place up here and sometimes there's some of us who are still learning--:: She shot a firm warning glance to the MMA member with a brief sort of chiding there before her gaze fell back up towards Sunder. ::It was. I am glad that we can all be friends now.:: The fight with the Morlocks had stirred things up-- but that had been, like Sunder said, a different time. They were all past it now and more like neighbors than waring tribes. Alix liked it far more than the way things had been and was, as a whole, pretty good on terms with the Morlocks and their members. It'd never been the physical things that caught her gaze anyways- minds. emotions. She was drawn to people based off of who they were, not how they looked and Sunder was no different. He was rough, sure, but there was a soul that wanted more than what he'd been made to be and she-- despite appearances-- could understand that on a very personal level. ::You were only trying to understand, It's not stupid and you were fine. It takes time to adjust, I understand.:: She smiled warmly and looked towards the pamphlet in his hand with unreadable concern. She understood of course, why some would be so frightened by the looks of the morlock in front of her. Rarely did Morlocks come above ground and, even to some mutants, they were still a frightening thing to behold. Alix had experience with these sorts, however, and while she could feel that some of the new to Mutant Town members were disapproving, those that knew her, her position and the things she'd done-- they knew. If she wanted, if she had to-- she could defend herself. Appearances were as always deceiving and as harmless as she might've looked, there was definitely more to her than just a pleasant face. Not that it'd be something he'd be forced to see. To him, she could be pleasant and the calm, welcoming face that he needed to see. It'd be genuine and she'd help as much as she could without expecting anything in return, ever, because that was simply what she did. Just how She caught that he wanted to read and quietly-- while she'd never voice it until told-- she resolved herself to helping him with the task. It was what they'd all set out to do in the first place. As Xfactor and Investigations. Help mutants like Sunder and create a place where they could all be accepted. ::I am not sure. Mutant Town is a place where there are people who want to help people just because they need it. But I do not know these--:: She motioned towards the Man who was now moving on to another corner. ::And it worries me. Havok, myself-- the rest of both Xfactor, XFI and Xcorp-- we're all here to help people no matter what. But we don't know who this MMA group is, so it worries us to no end.:: She admitted softly. ::Would you like to get something to eat? There's a very good sandwich place. I know the owner, and she's accepting to Morlocks, so it'll be very nice for you..:: She nodded softly, carefully keepign her words towards simplicity so that all the good intentions would be clear. |

Nothing about her approach appeared to be insincere. His giant head tilted from side to side as he attempted to read her body language. However, she had very few tales to read. Like her lips, her body rarely moved and if she hadn't stood in front of him he wouldn't know the owner of the voice that had infected his being. Then again, infected wasn't the right word. Infection was an unwanted symptom while her voice became a cure necessary to silence the screams in his head. This telepathic link between them had inadvertently caused a secondary effect; The voices that plagued Sunder's mind on a daily basis were now suddenly quiet. He rubbed his ear as for the first time he could hear without the obstruction of the disembodied voices of his deceased parents. He wondered if Alix was doing this on purpose to further hammer in the fact that she was here to help but was unsure of the extent of her mutant gift. Sunder listened to her responses to his comments and she gave him no reason to not trust her but he still kept his distance. The fact was, he couldn't help but be wary. Rarely did he come across anyone that just wanted to help but what she had said made sense and Sunder began to trust her. "Sunder doesn't have many friends. Only family." He tried to smile but looked away as he heard someone in the crowd snicker. Being as self-conscience as he was always made him think that the slightest whisper was a slight against him. His brow began to furrow until she went on to say he wasn't stupid. His attention went back to the much smaller Investigator. "Sunder is not stupid?... Alix is right. He wants to understand. Sunder thinks there is more behind beautiful words man speaks. He wants to believe but he can not trust humans. Only mutants can protect mutants." He said with a determination that comes from someone that speaks from belief. "Sunder does not believe them." He repeated with certainty. They both sort of agreed on this fact however Sunder was a bit biased to begin with thanks to life experiences. Alix was more careful than judgmental but they both agreed that more investigating had to be done. At least that's how Sunder interpreted it. When she finished speaking of her worries, Sunder nodded along. He shared the worry but was more apprehensive than anything. He wanted to say something to follow-up but then the strangest thing happen. Well it wasn't necessarily strange as it was expected. ::Would you like to get something to eat?...:: The voices came back. The question was innocent enough but the rest of her statement broke away as only the question echoed in his mind. It gave away to another voice. One that belonged to his wretched mother who once upon a time asked the very same question only to follow it up by placing a plate of food just out of his reach. He slipped into that memory in his head and relived the experience vividly for a second and the pain from starvation and anguish from being locked in a cage resurfaced. If Alix was emotionally linked with the voice that invaded his thoughts, then she might've felt it as well. As the suffering the memory wrought vanished with the relived torture, Sunder was left stuttering. A look of sadness plastered on his face followed by a sorrowful, "S-S-S-Sunder could eat. Alix lead the way?" He tried to push it to the back of his mind as he followed Alix but some things were hard to ignore. No matter how much they pained him to remember, Sunder could never forget. |

::My friends are my only family.:: By her side, her hand twitched with almost unnoticeable shift towards the crowd. The bulk of them seemed to move off and those that didn't? She glanced at with a firmness that suggested far more pull within the community than might've been initially noticeable. she smiled appreciatively as they moved off and gave a nod of reassurance before looking back towards Sunder. ::I understand. It is hard to trust.:: There was much in her own past that would have her go either way. Mutants and Humans and all the therebetween that were far from trustworthy. Fact of the matter was that at the end of the day there were few that Alix honestly and truly trusted. She gave much and asked little, but that was the crutch of her distrust. What she gave was not personal or particularly insightful to her as a person, but gave the support needed. It was a complicated way of doing things and one that she very rarely ever went into discussing. IN a way, it was why she was so shut off despite at the same time being so inviting and welcoming. Her own especial safety net. She caught the shift in his memories and, silently, her gaze rose with the smallest bit of empathetic sadness. Not her ability-- not yet-- but just that sharing of feelings that broke through. ::I am sorry--:: She apologized quickly, for very many things. ::I mean-- I didn't mean to read into your thoughts, but--:: she paused. ::I will help you have new memories, ok?:: Alix's voice followed with careful concern. It was hard to know. Sometimes, like now, it was hard to merely ignore the memories that drifted without restraint into her mind. She could see and know so much that it was instantly and adamantly something that she registered and while there was the instant rise of guilt-- because she should've caught that association sooner-- there was also a heap of sadness for the source. It begged the knowledge that there was always going to be something worse. She led the way as requested and, after a short walk, led him towards the front of a small restaurant. The owner-- a man who had giant lobster-ques claws for hands and bug like eyes protruding from a heavily angular face-- gave a warm greeting as they entered and a quick smile of familiarity to Alix. ::This is Tony. Best Gyros in Mutant town, in my opinion. It took alot of convincing and alot of help rebuilding for me to get him back here from sanctuary.:: She glanced towards the tall thin man with a still familiar smile. ::And this is Sunder. This is the first real meeting we've had but he's good friends with our friends below.:: Which was, of course, code for both Morlocks and Xfactor. Tony gave a knowing smile and held a claw out to the large morlock with absolute genuine friendliness. "Nice'ta meet ya. Ever had a Gyro?" it was all pretty standard fair greeting-- the sort that would've happened in any small neighborhood anywhere. Only unlike those normal neighborhood, this exchanged happened between men that look like lobsters, monsters, and tiny women with strange, shining eyes and a stoic expression. But really, Alix would've had it no other way. |

She was small but walked with a certain swagger. People smiled her way as they stepped aside, almost clearing a perfect path for the petite investigator and her friendly giant. Sunder was used to a similar type of reaction from people but they mostly moved out of his way from fear and they usually didn't smile. Here in Mutant Town she seemed to be respected. Not that Sunder could make a proper analysis from the few moments he'd known her but he could definitely notice the pull she had over the residents of this beautiful city. His eyes darted from high rises to buildings, cars to trucks, humans to mutants as he followed close behind. There was a sense of gravity pulling him along. As if Alix was her own planet and he was trotting along her orbit. She spoke to him as if she understood where he was coming from with the whole trust issue but didn't necessarily agree with him. She was right nonetheless. It was hard to trust. However, for the moment, he had all but forgotten his feelings against humans. The twisted memory helped with that and by the way Alix spoke next, by the way she apologized, even Sunder could tell that she had somehow tapped into his depressive thoughts. "Alix no need apologizing. Parents were angry, angry humans. They were angry at me." He looked down at his feet shamefully though he didn't know why he was embarrassed. He understood that she knew and in that moment he felt vulnerable which wasn't easy to overcome. He pushed those feelings to the back of his mind thinking he had to explain himself when he really didn't. "He was born special, different from what expected. Sunder was never free until he met Callisto." His face lit up at the mention of her name as he attempted a smile at Alix. "It is not Alix fault parents were mean. Not many care to read feelings. They see Sunder and think he big scary. They afraid or run away. I think only family care to see what ticks inside." He hoped to reassure her that her accidental reading of his feelings was okay. He didn't mind when maybe he should've, but there were plenty of other things to be mad about. "Yes, Alix and Sunder will make new memories!" He damn near shouted with an excited pumping of the fist. Soon they found themselves at their destination. A small but not too shabby restaurant. There was a mutant there. One with an obvious mutation as his. Alix introduced the two men and Sunder was a bit reluctant to take the man's lobster claw. The guy seemed nice and even greeted him warmly but The Morlock didn't know him and that was enough to not shake his claw. Sunder looked to Alix who gave him a reassuring nod so Sunder hesitantly shook it and responded politely. "It is good to meet friend of friend. Sunder never had... Gy-ro. Not know what it is but he could eat anything." The man led them to a table where Sunder sat, huge frame spilling out of the small chair. Here he experienced something he never really had in a public restaurant, anonymity. Nobody seemed to look his way or even cared that he was sitting among them. He even got a few smiles in his direction as he took a seat. Of course there were people here with physical mutations but even the normal looking patrons didn't seem concerned. He scooted his seat which appeared as if it could buckle under his weight at any minute while a human waitress brought out two waters. He would be amiss if he told himself he wasn't enjoying this. "Sunder never ate at restaurant before. He tried many times but people make him angry. Always get kicked out or leave before causing more damage. Never been in place like this." He looked at her as she spoke back to him from across the table. Now that they were sitting across from one another that need to ask her about the way she talked crept up again only this time he wouldn't ignore it. "Alix lips don't move when she talks. How does she do this?" He might never get another chance to find out so what better time than over a couple of glasses of water as they waited for their gyros. |
