The World is not enough; Winter Soldier

You think this letter on my head stands for France?
Fury handled most of the briefing, and it was just as well. He might have had the look of his old self about him, with that stern face, the mask, the stars and stripes and the shield, but he was far from feeling like it. The rig on his back felt uncomfortable, though he wasn’t in a snarling pain from the injury it was working double time to correct. He stood at the end of the line, counter-point to Fury, and had he not had all on his mind that he did, he’d have cracked a small grin at Fury’s drilling of Falsworth; so much did it remind him of a certain General Phillips.

Greeting everyone, the briefing out of the way, he looked into Wanda’s eyes when she approached him, that unflappable, lackadaisical way to her words as always finding some strange way of putting him at peace with all things, even if only momentarily, and by the time he realized something was afoot he turned only to see the garb of all present transmuted to the various clothing staples of the European theater. Jeffries’ question hadn’t fallen on deaf ears, and Fury’s order to recover and return the Time Gem was given an addendum as Wanda moved to the fore. “The Winter Soldier will not keep that gem anywhere but on his person. Keep close hold on yourself; I’ve dealt with things like that in the past. They’re almost alive. Quick to grab your passing fancy and dig into you like a tick. One second you’ll be curious about it and the next you’ll be plotting around it.”

Wanda worked her charms and Captain America turned to face all of them. “All of the people here…” he began, “Even the impromptu additions;” He gave a look to Falsworth. “…have the mettle and strength of fortitude to see this through clean and cut to the end. You’re going to see things for how they were. See them without the filter they’re run through by the history books. I know the homo superior amongst you are no strangers to terrors perpetrated out of bigotry and intolerance.” He pointed to Wanda’s forming tunnel. “Through that door sits a struggle very like the one you’ve all been through. The world was a different place then, but only in the most superficial ways. The Winter Soldier is going back there to end something before it can begin. Fury thinks it very well may be myself. But if it’s something more, if it’s something worse, it is imperative that you stop it. It is imperative that you do so without changing what’s to come on any sort of fundamental level. Your enemy will have a leg up on you, he’ll know the terrain, he’ll know the locations, and he’ll know where to go from the get go. Add to that a head start and the odds are stacked against you. But as most of the people here know, people like us, who make our bread with disaster, we work best when confronted with impossible odds.”

He stepped aside as The Scarlet Witch beckoned everyone towards her newly constructed road to the past.

“Good luck. The moment you’re safely off I’m assembling my team and going after the man behind this Winter Soldier. If all goes well you should be back in ten minutes and we’ll share a laugh when I’m back.”

He moved towards the door, stopping and clamping a hand down on Simon’s shoulder, adding in a whisper. “Remember, this man will not stop; he needs to be stopped, even if you have to take the fifth freedom.”

Giving a confident shake, he took his leave, that last addition having left a foul taste in his mouth.

Reality Warping
JP Wanda/Simon/ Pietro

“Remember, this man will not stop; he needs to be stopped, even if you have to take the fifth freedom.” The Captain said in parting, as he revealed he was not going with them.

Simon frowned when he was appointed leader, "Hold on a minute, Director Fury, Cap... Look, I appreciate your confidence in me... but I'm not ready for this. Not by a long shot. I mean... I don't even fully understand the limits of my powers. I'm very willing to place this entirely in Agent Wisdom's hands."

Fury narrowed his good eye on Williams, "You wanted to be a Wonderman, you have to live the part."

Wanda moved away from the mouth of the tunnel and put her hand on Simon's arm. "You will lead, because they need you to lead," she said softly. "No great leader ever wants to be a leader; those who hunger for it, only wish power. It is those who do it for the sake of others, who are the best leaders. And you," she reached up, combing her fingers lightly through his hair, "will be a very good leader. You may not want it, but it is not in your nature not to help others."

Pietro harumphed a little at the protests of the human and the hesitancy of the others. "When do we move?" he asked impatiently, "We are all quite aware of the problems with time travel, and of war. We thank you your concerns, now, let us start this before this Soldier so changes things that in a blink of an eye we all sport swatiskas on our lapels."

Closing his eyes against Wanda's touch, Simon said, "All right then." He opened his eyes and looked into the depths of Wanda's portal. "See you sixty-eight years ago."

Then he stepped inside.

"Come along, my dear brother," she said and took Pietro's hand. "Let us see what there is to see, and do what there is to do."

For Wanda, the Time tunnel was a twisting tunnel moving impossibly fast, looping and curving with no sense of up or down, and openings along the sides that one might accidently fall through. Whether everyone saw the void of Time the same way, she didn't know and it didn't bother her. Flashing colors blinded her eyes as she soared or fell or whatever, but she held fast to Pietro's hand. "Is this not wonderful?" she shouted over the rushing wind.

There were few things in the world that moved too fast for Pietro, but this was one of them. His feet touched no ground, there was no footing, there was no place to run. He had never seen such a world and it was not wonderful, not to him. But his sister steadied him, as always she did, and he managed a wan smile, "Yes, not wonderful describes it, immensely." He pointed straight ahead, or whatever direction they were traveling in, space as well as time, "Focus, my love, I would hate to have your human discover he is alone before his birth."

"Pietro, you worry too much." Even as she said the words though, something was wrong. Something was... pulling her. Yes... pulling her and Pietro along with her, away. As her attention waivered, the tunnel began to unravel. But she felt no fear as the tunnel began to dissolve. "Everything happens as it should!" she called to the unseen travelers with them. "Follow the river of events! Have faith. All will happen as it needs to," she told them before she and Pietro were channeled away and lost in Time.

In the multicolored unravelling, in the speed of the stream of time, Simon reached back for Wanda's hand as the fracture appeared, "WANDA!" he cried out, but she was pulled away by the wind of fate. "RALLY ON ME!" he ordered, "WISDOM! We need to stay together!"

But already, they were splintering apart, the ionic warp of reality reacting to the powers he'd been given by accident... or maybe by design for this very reason. He threw himself forward... not himself, the ionic part of himself, and the time tunnel's collapse steadied. He and whoever landed with him would have to search out those who had been lost, but as his entire body glowed like his eyes did always, Williams was giving them a fighting chance to survive this.

Who knows what awaited them on the other side?
