Nope HOMETOWN: New Orleans, LA KNOWN RELATIVES: Adoptive Father – Jean-Luc LeBeau Adoptive Brother – Henry LeBeau (deceased) Sister-in-law – Mercy LeBeau Ex-wife – Bella Donna Boudreaux Cousin – Theoren Marceaux Cousin – Etienne Marceaux (deceased) Father-in-law – Marius Boudreaux (deceased) Brother-in-law – Julien Boudreaux (deceased) PHYSICAL APPEARANCE HEIGHT: 6’2” BUILD: Muscular and lithe EYES: Red iris on black sclera HAIR: Brown, shoulder length DISTINGUISHING MARKS: Many scars, but nothing of note besides the eyes CLOTHING STYLE: Usually wears uniform as a precaution but dresses for the occasion in order to blend in. UNIFORM: Gambit wears his signature brown leather trench coat with packs of playing cards in both pockets. A thin layer of Kevlar is sewn into the lining. The staff is six feet long but retracts to six inches and is kept in an interior pocket of the coat. Over Remy’s torso he wears armor of woven steel and composite materials with a carbon fiber coating. It can withstand small arms fire. His feet, shins, and knees are protected by articulated armor of a similar construction. On his belt he carries two Sykes fighting daggers in nylon sheathes. His shirt and trousers vary, but he prefers black cargo pants and matching tee. He wears puncture resistant gloves with reinforced knuckles, but cuts the thumbs and forefingers out to allow him skin contact. He often keeps his long hair from his eyes with a black bandanna. POWERS GENERAL DESCRIPTION: Gambit can generate a bio-molecular catalyst that releases potential energy in any inorganic solid he touches with his skin. The released kinetic energy appears as a heatless pink flame which engulfs the object. He can control this process to make objects explode or to cause them to slowly fizzle away. The amount of energy converted is proportional to the mass of the object, as is the time it takes to charge it kinetically. A playing card, for example, can be charged almost instantly and explodes with the force of a hand grenade. He is also able to enhance the power of existing kinetic energy allowing him to strike hard enough with his staff to knock down a single story home in one swipe. The bio-kinetic energy churning inside of Remy has also affected his own body. His speed and strength surpass that of normal human capacity, thus enhancing his agility, coordination, endurance, and reflexes. He can jump about twenty feet straight up and run around thirty miles per hour. His conditioning is equivalent to that of an Olympic athlete. A side effect of his energy abilities is that he is immune to telepathic powers. This prevents attacks on his mind as well as telepathic communication. He cannot control this ability, so even allies cannot use telepathy on him. A telepath trying to read Gambit’s mind would experience a sort of psychic static. Gambit also has an empathic charm which he frequently uses to seduce women. In more practical applications it helps him to get close to a target or talk his way out of trouble. The effect is subtle but only affects those who are unaware that this ability is being applied. Because of this power and the telepathic interference it is speculated that his mutant power is psychic in nature. Having lost his eye, Gambit now wears a cybernetic replacement. It has multiple modes such as night vision, thermal vision, magnification, and range finding among others. He cycles these modes by winking. The device plugs into a bionic port in the socket and can be removed. Remy honed his street fighting skills over the years since childhood. He is also a master of staff fighting and Savat, a French martial arts style. He enjoys parkour for leisure but also employs it in combat when practical. He is also an expert with all manner of thievery including lock picking , pickpocketing, and the like. He is lethally accurate with all manner of thrown weapons, both traditional and improvised. He can speak English, French, Spanish, and Creole. He plays the guitar, violin, and piano. WEAKNESS: Gambit is unable to harness the potential energy of basic organic substances. The reason for this is unclear, even to himself. He is also unable to affect liquids and gases as the molecules are already in motion. His power interferes with telepathy and renders him essentially deaf to the mental communications of allies. Gambit is a combination of narcissist and hopeless romantic. He won’t hesitate you tell you how great he is, but he loves come to the aid of a lady in distress. This combination of altruism and self-absorption endears him to friends but creates tension when he inevitably thinks of himself. While seduction is his game, through pride and the constant hunger for a challenge he may be enticed by a pretty face or the promise of adventure. Sometimes he voluntarily goes along into with the plan against him for no other reason than to escape boredom. PERSONALITY Growing up on the streets, Gambit learned the hard way how to handle himself. He maintains an air of confidence regardless of the odds. While appearing arrogant or disinterested or even downright crass, he is constantly feeling out the situation and sizing up his opponents. As a master thief, he prefers to greet an adversary with a disarming smile and then rob them blind when they aren’t looking. He will resort to direct tactics when necessary, however, trusting in his abilities (and perhaps a little luck) to win the day. Ultimately Gambit’s allegiance is to himself, though he will sometimes stick his neck out for people he cares about. He may take on a noble cause because it happens to coincide with his own personal code of morality, or he may have ulterior motives to achieve. Usually getting paid is his greatest goal. Sometimes he just seeks adventure to alleviate boredom. No matter what his reasons, he’s not telling anyone. Despite his rough upbringing he retains a chivalrous streak and finds it difficult to neglect a lady in distress. There is always something going on behind those red and black eyes. His calculating and alert nature is hidden behind a façade of disarming charm and likability. His appearance, his mannerisms, and speech are all carefully chosen to adapt to the situation. He takes advantage of his Cajun accent, playing it up or toning it down as it suits him. He can be the life of the party or a complete social chameleon on a whim. He regards all information to be of some value. HISTORY: PRE-APOCALYPSE When Gambit was born his red irises and black sclera made his parents think he must be demonic. They abandoned him at a New Orleans orphanage where he was later stolen by members of the Thieves’ Guild and kept by a collector of children called Antiquary. There he was named “Remy.” Because of his strange eyes they thought that he was “Le Diable Blanc” (white devil) which Jean Luc Lebeau, the leader of the guild, has prophesied. Jean Luc himself took notice and had Remy relocated to the street gang of Fagan’s Mob where the boy became an expert thief and a proficient fighter. When he was only eight years old, Remy rescued a beautiful little girl named Bella Donna Boudreaux from some thugs and the two became friends. She was the granddaughter of the leader of the rival Assassin’s Guild. When Remy was ten, Jean Luc orchestrated for the boy to pick his pocket and be caught in the act so that he could meet Remy face to face. Jean Luc adopted the boy and raised him to fulfill the prophecy of Le Diable Blanc. He also arranged that Remy and Bella Donna should marry when they turned eighteen in hopes of bringing an end to the long war between their factions. Remy’s powers began to manifest when he was thirteen years old. He kept them a secret, training himself in their use. At age fifteen he helped his cousin Etienne with the guild rite of passage known as “the Tilling.” They attempted to steal from an immortal mutant woman called Candra. She caught them and told Remy that they had met before in her past but Remy’s future. She sold them to The Pig, an enormous mutant slave trader, who intended to sell them to HYDRA as boy soldiers. Gambit used his powers to escape the cell, but before they could get away Pig caught them and began beating Etienne badly. Remy picked up a playing card, charged it, and threw it at Pig, exploding the brute’s eye. The boys escaped but Etienne was too injured to swim and drowned in the process. Remy returned to New Orleans and married Bella Donna when they turned eighteen. While this did bring peace to the guilds, Bella Donna’s brother Julien objected. When he challenged Remy to a duel Remy killed him in self defense. In an attempt to retain the fragile peace, Jean Luc banished Remy from New Orleans. Remy left without Bella Donna to wander the country. For years Remy drifted from place to place working as a professional thief. When his powers grew uncontrollable, threatening his life, he was directed to Nathaniel Essex who removed part of his brain stem in exchange for a favor. The subsequent events were initially unaccounted for until age twenty-three when Gambit was contacted by his adoptive father. Jean Luc asked Remy to help rescue a mutant boy named Shirow from The Pig. Shirow had the ability to produce a mind numbing gas and Pig sought to use it to subjugate mankind. Remy tracked the boy down, defeated Pig, and used the gas to force the big mutant to walk off a cliff. Jean Luc gave Remy another task. This time he was to retrieve the Momentary Princess, a time traveling gem. It appeared every twenty-seven years but only for a few minutes. Gambit ran into rival thief Sekmet Conoway and the two fought leaving Gambit unable to acquire the stone. Teaming up with Conoway, however, he was able to retrieve another jewel, the Tomorrow Stone. Jean Luc revealed to Remy the origin of the prophecy of Le Diable Blanc. He told him that they had met when Jean Luc was a teenager but Remy was his current age and produced pictures taken at that time to prove it. Gambit and the shapeshifter Courier used the Tomorrow Stone to travel back to 1891 and found that Jean Luc and Belize Marceaux were prisoners of Candra. She was a secret benefactor to the Thieves guild and would not allow a renewal of its pact. She was angry that the guild had failed her and she wanted Mr. Sinister’s help against Apocalypse. Gambit revealed himself to her as someone she would meet in his past, but her future and agreed to assist Candra. Gambit and Courier, along with the teenage Jean Luc, found Sinister in New York under the guise of an Obstetrician. Courier shifted into the form of a woman to infiltrate the practice as a patient but was turned into a puddle by Sinister when discovered. Gambit negotiated with Sinister to reform Courier in exchange for the Guild’s retrieval of the texts of the Old Kingdom from Ozamandias. Sinister, however, did not know Courier was a man and set his natural form as a woman by mistake. Gambit, Mr. Sinister, and the Guild defeated Candra and returned her to the Externals who were angry she risked waking Apocalypse. Sinister erased the information from the minds of the Guild members, locking the information deep within Gambit’s subconscious. He also noticed Remy had brain surgery at some point. Gambit and Courier used the Tomorrow Stone to return to their own time. Remy returned to find that Bella Donna was now the head of the Assassin’s Guild. She was angry with Gambit for having left her after they were married and declared war against the Thieves’ Guild anew. The aged Jean Luc wished to step down as patriarch and he appointed Remy as the new leader. He attempted to negotiate a peace with Bella Donna, but she would agree only if Gambit left New Orleans forever. Remy agreed and peace was restored. Gambit began working for the Von Struckers, a wealthy mutant couple. He committed many acts of corporate espionage and theft for them until he found they were funding the terrorist acts of a group called “The Brotherhood.” Gambit left the Von Struckers but fearing he knew too much they put a contract out on his life. Because of this Remy could get no work and was constantly pursued by bounty hunters and hit men. He reevaluated his life and decided to make a change. He met a young mutant named Alix in a bar in Westchester who told him about a school for mutants where they taught peaceful coexistence with humans. Left with no better option, Gambit went to the Xavier Institute. He stayed for about a year, then joined the team X-Factor at the request of its leader Havok. It was a good fit and he got along well with Havok, the younger of the Summers brothers. Then Shadow X fell on the school. Being immune to telepathy, Gambit was able to help for the rebellion against the dark hive mind that had taken over the school. Havok then sent Gambit on an undercover mission to infiltrate the Brotherhood. Gambit approached Magneto who allowed him to join the Brotherhood, however he required him to attack the mutant Primal as a test for both of them. Gambit was badly beaten but allowed entrance to the group. Over several months he completed many assignments for Magneto, stealing millions of dollars and the Cyttorack Crystal among other things. At the massacre of Wolf’s head, an entire village was killed and Alix of X-Factor was taken captive by Saint. In order to keep the Brotherhood from killing Alix, Gambit asked to keep her under the pretense of a slave. Magneto later arranged she be exchanged for Mystique who was a prisoner of the Hellfire Club. DURING APOCALYPSE (April 7th through April 12th, 2009) When the Brotherhood stayed on the grounds of the Xavier Institute, Remy snuck into the building and was blasted by Cyclops when he was discovered. Gambit fought in the battle against the Horseman Famine but he was defeated and brought to the temple of Apocalypse where Mr. Sinister once again operated on him, turning him into a priest of Apocalypse. While in this form he was defeated by a strike force and had to endure several months of treatment and therapy to return him to normal. This period of rehabilitation was a dark time for Gambit. Seeing Sinister again and the horrors of the surgery awakened in him a deep sorrow and regret anew over the Morlocks whose deaths he was responsible for. He had frequent nightmares of the faces of the dead mutants, the laughing of the Marauders he led into the tunnels, and the bite of Scalphunter's blade as he thrust it into Gambit's stomach, leaving him to die. And always in the dreams, as he knelt bleeding out, the distant blaze slowly approaching and the roar of an engine growling louder. Then just before he woke up suddenly in a panic and a cold sweat he would hear a voice hiss in his ear "Vengeance." POST-APOCALYPSE Shortly after Remy recovered, he was plagued by vomiting maggots and hearing the voices of his past victims. His fellow Brotherhood members went with him to New Orleans where Jericho warned them to leave Remy to his inevitable doom and save themselves. Ghost Rider appeared for vengeance against Gambit for his part in the murder of the New Orleans version of the Morlocks. He had done this for Nathaniel Essex as payment for the brain surgery that saved his life. Remy evaded Ghost Rider with the assistance of Brother Voodoo and his fellow Brotherhood members. He was eventually able to find a peace about his role in the deaths. Spitfire and Gambit became close friends during his time at the Brotherhood. After they sneaked into the District Attorney's office, Jac confided in him that she was seeing someone outside the Brotherhood. Inexplicably, several people began switching into alternate versions of themselves, some temporarily and some permanently. It was later discovered that Earth 1224 from another dimension was being merged with Earth 740. Fortunately Gambit wasn't replaced. Without a Xavier Institute to retreat into, his alternate version had been killed a year prior by one of that dimension's Maruaders working as an assassin for the Von Struckers. Shadow King, President Magnus of Jus Soli, and Magneto bonded together at this time to form the superbeing called Onslaught. Gambit was severely injured when Onslaught encountered him. The Brotherhood joined the efforts of the X-Men and the Hellfire Club, among others, and Onslaught was defeated. In October of that year, Gambit discovered Magnetos plan to kill X-Factor and SHIELD. Gambit alerted Alex to the trap but Primal discovered him and beat him severely. Before all the Brotherhood, Remy was exposed as a traitor. Magneto nearly beat him to death, then put him in a cell where Primal tortured him repeatedly, ruining Remy’s right eye. From his cell he tried to convince Spitfire to leave the Brotherhood for her own good, but she felt Remy had lied to her and betrayed her and she refused. With the help of Jesse, Gambit escaped his cell and blew off Primal’s arm. He freed Dum-Dum Dugan and Quicksilver and the three of them fled Sanctuary to teleport to the surface. PURIFIERS Gambit got Box to make a cybernetic eye for him to replace the one Primal ripped out during his torture. Primal killed Jesse for helping Gambit escape and Remy buried her beside her brother, a former X-Man. Afterwards Gambit worked alone but joined in the fight against the Purifiers alongside his allies. He partnered with X-23 to find the mole in SHEILD who had leaked the video showing Havok as the Horseman of War. Taking a tip from Dugan they went to the house of a man named Ferriday. Gambit found a secret enclave papered in news clippings and Laura discovered that the SHIELD agent's young son had been killed in a Brotherhood attack. The two of them tracked down Ferriday while he was on duty and followed him to a secret brotherhood meeting. Ferriday was about to distribute this latest shipment of null tech weapons and lead a group to hunt down mutants still outside the energy dome. Gambit destroyed the shipment and he and X-23 escaped the cultists with Ferriday. They turned the traitor over to SHIELD along with more than enough evidence to convict him. Gambit laid low when the Brotherhood came to assist its fellow mutants in the wake of the suicide bombing of the Xavier Institute. He felt his skills and powers wouldn't be of much use anyway. A stolen Red Cross semi truck full of supplies and medical equipment was inexplicably abandoned right outside the triage grounds, however. SKRULLS During the Skrull invasion Lady Braddock enlisted his services. He fought alongside Psylocke and Longshot to rescue the Max Coleridge from the hands of the Skrulls. He attempted to make contact with X-Factor to join the fight against the alien invaders, but the team appeared to be under a strange complacency of some kind. Fearing that the Bella Donna and his beloved Thieves' Guild might be in trouble, Remy defied his banishment and returned once again to New Orleans. When he got there a similar enthrallment possessed his people. Everyone he knew, everything he had known and loved, now seemed to be lost. Gambit went back to New York and managed to sneak aboard the SHIELD helicarrier where the Skrull Queen commanded her forces. He had charged the engines with kinetic energy and was about to detonate them when he heard "Agents, report to annihilation stations. Protocol Last Defense has been initiated..." come over the intercom. Snooping around he was able to ascertain that the ship had been reclaimed and the Skrulls defeated. Unprepared to answer questions about how he infiltrated a restricted government base or his preparedness to destroy the place out of a thirst for revenge, Gambit discretely departed without ever being noticed. CURRENT HISTORY After his brief stint as a White Knight and his nearly disastrous vendetta mission, Gambit went into hiding. He wandered alone, keeping a low profile and staying one step ahead of Brotherhood and assassins. Everything he had been put through in the past years began to weigh on his mind. To hone his skills as a thief back to peak performance he spent his time performing several major burglaries of various gangsters. He amassed a great deal of money and lavished in luxury attempting to escape his personal hell. This spending, however, attracted the attention of the Brotherhood. Tired of running, Gambit turned to his old allies in X-Factor. SAMPLE RP POST: It had been quite a while since Gambit had practiced his original calling. As the thief alighted atop the roof of the Metropolitan Museum of Art he felt it all coming back to him. “Like riding a bike” he said to himself with a crooked grin. He peered carefully through a nearby skylight, confirming he was directly over his target. He winked his right eye, causing the bionic replacement cornea to cycle into night vision, then repeated this for infrared and thermal spectrums. He pressed a single finger to the glass and waited as pink flames spread across the pane. Pulling back his hand, he waited as the glass slowly burned away in the heatless glow. With the grace of a panther he dove through the hole in the skylight and fell a full twenty feet to the floor below. He made only a faint thud as he rolled into his landing. He stood, and there before him on the wall was the object he had come for. “Mon Dieu, she’s beautiful” he whispered to himself. His jaw slackened as he stared into the piercing eyes of Alba, the Eastern Woman painted in 1848 by Alexander Cabunel. Returning to his senses he reached into the pocket of his big leather trench coat and withdrew two small metallic discs like suction cups. He gently held one against the wall on either side of the painting and clenched his eyes as he pressed them hard at the same time. A bright light flashed. The EMP generators detonated, taking out the sensitive electronic alarm sensors Gambit knew were embedded in the wall. He deftly unsheathed a dagger and pried the wooden frame apart at its joints. With inhuman grace he pulled the canvas free and held it under one arm as his other hand clipped a lead weight over the broken frame. Stepping back he looked at his watch. “Perfect” he thought. The whole exchange had taken only moments and the emergency backup generator would have come on only a split second after he was clear. The weight, perfectly calibrated to match that of the painting, would prevent the detection of the theft until morning. Gambit had done his homework on this one and so far it was going off without a hitch. He rolled up the canvas into a case and slung it on his back. Suddenly a sharp pain struck him in his shoulder. He recoiled with pain as he reflexively grabbed his arm. An arrow was buried in his flesh, its black shaft pointing back toward his assailant. A large reptilian form emerged from the shadow. Humanoid features were twisted in a combination of hate and glee. Remy thought the creature seemed familiar but couldn’t place it. His confusion must have registered on his face. “You don’t remember me, do you?” hissed the fiend. “Well it looks like you never will” it said as it reached for another arrow. The Cajun braced himself for the ensuing pain, gripped the shaft of the arrow and tore it out. As he did it erupted with a bright pink flame. He was no longer smiling. With a jerk of his body he the flung the projectile back into the lizard man’s face. It exploded in the creatures eyes, blinding him just as he was about to nock another bolt. Briefly Remy considered a hasty retreat. It would be wise to evade the beast while it was stunned. But he quickly decided he could not afford to allow this unknown enemy to ever resume its hunt for him. Without wasting another moment, Remy lunged at the monster, taking out and extending his staff as he did so. The first strike landed on the crown of the lizard man’s head with a sickening crunch. The reptile man fell to the ground screaming in agony and terror. The Cajun did not relent in that moment, years of pent up anger flooded his mind. He’d been misjudged, used, attacked, abandoned, beaten, and even tortured. His red eyes fairly glowed with rage as he continued pummeling his foe with crushing blows, the lizard-like frame caving in and shuddering under the savage beating. Finally its cries stopped, and so did Gambit. Straightening himself, Remy ran his fingers through his hair. He inspected the tear in his coat sleeve, cursed “L’enfern” and gave the scaly pile of meat a swift kick in his frustration. But the thief composed himself, adjusted his bandanna, and jumped up towards the breech in the ceiling. He caught the edge of the window frame and nimbly pulled himself up and out of the museum. He made good time getting home. While not a speedster he was fleet of foot and his power allowed him to maximize every long step. The coolness of the night was refreshing so he took the long way returning to his apartment. He bounded like a deer over a railing. He somersaulted over a parked car. He took the next corner twirling around a street light as he went. All the while Gambit kept to the shadows mostly, but paused briefly under a lamp post to take out the painting and admire it. He felt like a child with a new toy. When he arrived at his temporary apartment the first thing he did, even before bandaging his wound, was tack the painting up on the wall. He sat and stared for several minutes before he finally did tend to his arm, then returned to sit down on the couch. He poured himself a triple shot of Johnny Walker and lit a cigarette. The rest of the night Gambit gazed into the mesmerizing eyes of the lady in the painting. He thought about his tumultuous childhood, the innocent lives he cost, his life as an outsider in the mutant community, and all the chaotic events he had been involved in recently. He often thought about such things, but the hypnotic gaze of the lady in the painting gave him an unusual feeling of peace about it all. Until tonight he had not been sure of his future. As he basked in the presence of the masterpiece he realized exactly what he was going to do. He had drained almost the full bottle of scotch now, though his metabolism and high tolerance kept him from feeling its effects. As the sun rose over the city skyline his cell phone rang, waking him from his trance. He answered it without bothering to check the ID. Only one person had this number. “Oi, ma chere” he spoke jovially into the speaker. “Gambit gon’ be dere tonight, don’ you worry now.” The call ended and the Cajun stood up, lit his last Marlboro in the pack, and walked out the door without taking so much as a glance around. He knew he was wearing everything he needed and that nothing about the apartment could be traced to him. As he closed the door behind him, the sudden draft jostled the painting free of its tacks. It drifted to the floor and lay face down in the empty room. |

Hey Jeremy, I’m sorry about the delay; things have been kind of busy and we’ve all been rushed around. Mostly this is fine, but I have a couple of things to cover so bear with me. 1. Powers are mostly fine, but the part where you say he can’t get drunk is completely inaccurate. He would need the metabolism of Wolverine or Quicksilver to not get drunk – I am pretty sure Olympics athletes get drunk all the time when they’re not training. 2. Personality is fine aside from where you seem to be referencing the X-men and him being on the team for years without them knowing his real name, and then about Xavier not being able to read his mind. Is this left from a previous app of yours? If it is, remember to go back and make this all fit with XMR. Also, it is his name or it isn’t. As far as I’m aware, there is nothing in canon that suggests his name is just an alias, even if it was the Guild who named him, it’s still his name. Take it out or show me a comic reference to keep the fact he has a ‘real’ name. 3. History – Everything is mostly fine until after Apocalypse. Remy was the only person to be vomiting up the maggots, everyone else who was present had to go with him to help him out. Your WWX history and the fact Remy had to break cover is in the Purifiers history section, when it needs to come before. During WWX he also became good friends with Spitfire and he was one of the first people she talked to about seeing someone outside of the Brotherhood, which eventually spiralled into a bigger situation. It’s minor in terms of the overall app but the friendship is of some significance to my character so I’d just like to be sure you’re aware of it. Similarly, your Purifiers history is in the Skrulls history section and you need to get the timeline fixed here. You’ve not done a bad job in getting all the facts together, but it seems a bit rushed here and there and you also need to make sure you’ve contacted everyone still in play character wise (such as Alix, Havok etc) to make sure all the details are correct and for any additional useful information. Mostly, this is all just a case of refining details and getting facts in the right place. You’ve crammed a lot in, but I need to see a little more finesse that shows you understand the plots that have gone on, beyond just being able to right the basics about them. You have my AIM if you need to talk, otherwise respond to this with a reply when you have made edits, thank you :) |
