The Park (anyone with trees and grass and stuff)
11AM
March 26

Jesse was silly. He felt silly. He had spent the last few hours contemplating just how silly he was.

Slightly more than a day ago, in the wee hours of the morning, Jesse had arrived in Red Hook via a cargo train and a lot of walking. He was daunted. There were no two ways about it; Jesse was not prepared for New York, not even a small bite size suburb like Mutant Town.

Jesse hadn’t slept that night, but he was young and one night lost sleep was easily pushed aside. Previously he had only ever seen one mutant, the one in the mirror. But in the hours since, he had seen many more – and those were just the ones he recognised as being mutant from a brief look. That was why he was here, in what to him seemed the Mutant capital of the world. But that was also a problem. They were people and little Jesse from the farm had no idea how to be social, how to walk up to a complete stranger and say “Hi, I’m Jesse, I’m a little lost, could you please help me”. He had never said hello to someone who wasn’t family in his entire life.

Jesse hadn’t expected the building to tree ratio to be so claustrophobic either.

A lot of his travel from farm to city, Jesse had kept himself faded from sight. Hitching train rides for the 500 mile trip would have been much harder had anyone seen him, and not as free. Once he had found foot in Mutant Town, he had dropped the invisibility. He couldn’t concentrate on being hidden and explore the mess he was in at the same time. Even in this place of all places, he stood out like a bull’s bollocks, but so far no one had run away screaming.

Purely by accident, Jesse had managed to find a library, and in all his shyness, that was where he had spent the entire previous day. The night too actually. He had simply walked in and when people realised he was not going to be loud or make trouble, they just ignored him. He felt like the proverbial kid in the candy shop. Jesse’s mum had always brought home books fro Jesse to read, he had never gone to the library itself. Nevertheless he knew to respect books and libraries, and so he curbed his enthusiasm.

He promptly found himself in the sci-fi section and spent the whole day reading. As the library was closing and he had nowhere else to go, Jesse faded from sight in a quiet corner and waited till everyone had gone and the library was locked shut for the night. When it became too dark for even him to read, he went in search of a flashlight in the lost and found but found zip. So he curled up amongst the cushion in the kids’ corner and dozed off to sleep.

When night turned to day – about three hours ago – Jesse snuck out of the library, going invisible once more. Once he was back in the open, he unfaded so he could concentrate on other matters. His hunger led him to a bakery where he bought and consumed three pies alongside a high grain loaf of bread. Half the loaf went to the pigeons in the park where he’d spent his last couple of hours.

Sitting on a park bench surrounded by pigeons going coo, Jesse rested his head in his hands contemplating. He was thinking how silly he was for being so damn shy in a city of several million. He would need a job soon enough, maybe at a butchery but that would mean talking to someone. Jesse was also thinking that eventually when he was utterly broke and starving, that then he would go ask for help or something, when his shyness and social ineptitude would cave in the face of necessity.

For someone who could see so much, he had completely missed the community centre near the library that helped idiots like himself. Had someone pointed it out, he would have felt silly for not even thinking to look for it.

Anansi had spent most of the free time he had doing random jobs around Mutant Town for anyone that needed a hand. Moving things, building things, hauling hell anything anyone needed. Basically anything to get cash Anansi was doing. While he was still keeping up with his duties in the Old City, he was also on the lookout throughout the tunnels for a new place to set up shop. He had found a few tunnels near the storm drains into the Atlantic that could prob habitable. Of course they would have to build stilt huts over the water and thankfully X-Factor had offered them their help.

It would need lots of wood and that didn't seem to really be problem since wood wasn't really hard to get ahold of. The tools to build the walkways and huts would need some help but they could do it. He still needed to talk to Callisto about it but it seemed like a pretty good plan if they could get established. Those were some thoughts running through his head currently as he walked through Mutant Town heading towards the park to get some of his daily exercise in.

As he drew closer his eyes caught sight of a large reptilian like creature sitting on a bench completely oblivious to the pigeons that were gathering around him. His large frontal eyes stayed in the normal colour spectrum, while his left smaller one switched in infared and his right smaller one switched into thermal. It was interesting to see in so many ways and yet he wouldn't do anything to prevent it from happening. Drawing closer he stuck his middle and lowest set of arms in his pockets while crossing his top set. Coming to a stop in front of the large man he looked down at him, parting his mandibles to speak a little easier and to be heard.

"You look like you are deep in thought there my friend, anything I can help you with?" he said through his mandibles. It was nice to see another different looking mutant which was a nice change to seeing more of the smooth skin like mutants around M-Town. Taking a seat beside him after shooing away the pigeon he patted the guy on his large shoulder. "Name's Anansi friend and you look like your somewhat lost. How can I help my fellow altered mutant comrade?" he asked with a smile growing under his mandibles.

Given the current climate, the danger, the loss, and all the other things that had begun to take hold on every single person's life-- Alix was exhausted. Scott's death. Spiral's device. Layla's engagement. threats. They were all things that were weighing down on her constantly and, eventually, it'd been too much. But she was also far too proud to flat out admit that it was all too much for her to handle, and while Jamie did all the usual things that kept her far from falling into despair (just as she did for him, of course) There had to be more. The MMA meetings were one such thing-- though she'd never attend openly. There were too many people in the community that relied on her to be alright. That looked to her and the others as guidance of strength in a time where things were definitely reaching a pressure point.

So, she sat outside and she listened in the means that had once been-- when she'd been very young-- the way she'd learned. She always went to the early morning sessions before most of the others were even awake and more often than not she was back in time for breakfast. Today had been a delay-- though she'd counter acted it with sandwiches and a walk through the park that serve as the gathering point for so many young mutant families. Sometimes-- on her off days-- watching these normal, happy people was everything that she wanted.

Other times, the scene that leveled into view was what found her. Of course she first noticed Anansi-- whom she'd grown to know better after the first not-too-stellar meeting that they'd had well over a year ago. And, with a quiet smile that was knowing as ever, she noticed the new mutant. Anansi was-- true to the nature of Morlocks-- offering help. Alix was as always willing to help, regardless of appearance.

"Hello" she smiled without fear or reticence.

"Anansi, how're you?" For now, she kept things without the pressing of assistance or the approach of any subject beyond friendliness. It was far easier this way, really.

Jawesome watched as moment by moment, the world passed in front of him. Every heartbeat, one more second slipped from the future and into the past. Unnaturally large eyes watched on, kept watching as another Mutant – as different from humanity as he was – approached. Those large green eyes widened as…Anansi… sat down next to him, introduced himself and even offered help.

Jawesome was nervous but even more so excited. He sat up but still slouched a little. A babble of thoughts overwhelmed his sensibilities for a few moments. Someone friendly. Someone as different as he. Help coming to him so he didn’t have to search it out. Physical contact. Friend.

He clung to that last thought like a lifeline as he pulled himself together. “Anansi, hi, I’m Jesse. And yes I am lost.” He qwuickly thought for a moment sorting out the word he wanted to put forth. “I just moved here and so I’m looking for home and work”. His tone was full of warmth though his lack or relaxation was quite apparent.

That was actually quite easy for the little lost farm-boy. He had no idea why he had worried so much. Because he was silly.

It was easy until the female approached, she seemed quite nice and friendly, and she obviously knew Anansi. Jesse had no idea if she was mutant or not, but she was attractive but most modern standards. Now he had no idea what to do.

Anansi sat and looked at the large crocodilian like man sitting beside him. After saying his part, the spider sat back and watched the man react to him. Being a master of observation Anansi could tell that his comment had a direct effect to the man. He subtlety sat up straighter and he seemed to gain some confidence. When he spoke he seemed to be nervous and yet still confident. The man introduced himself as Jesse and how he was lost and looking for a home and somewhere to work. Nodding in understanding Anansi looked at the creature sitting beside him with his side eyes. Ah the glory of having multiple eyes.

"Well nice to meet you Jesse and I definitely know that feeling," he said as he sat on the bench beside him "It can be very scary moving into this city looking especially like we do. Though I come from a group of other physically altered mutants that live away from prying eyes under the city. It allows us to survive without being persecuted and if you want you can always have a place there." Catching sight of a woman walking towards them he focused his eyes on who it was.

It was Alix, the normally telepathic woman from X-Factor. Yet something had changed her, had altered her to be able to speak normally and it was a little weird to the spider mainly because he didn't think that things came for free. There was always a cost later down the line. "Hello Alix, nice to see you out and about," he commented to her with smile "Things going well for you? I don't see you very much these days. Then again we all kinda do our own thing so we never really know whats going on. I was just talking to my comrade Jesse here. Turns out he's a little lost."

On some level, it was an amazing new thing to be mistaken as normal. Before-- literally just months ago-- she wouldn't have been mistaken as a average person. Even with strange eyes, it was easy now to imagine her, perhaps, as some young 20 something going about an average life. Maybe in graduate school. She definitely had that sort of look about her that suggested a dedication to studies.

None of these things, however, were the truth-as Anansi knew-- and so she smiled at Jesse apologetically.

"things are-- well I guess they're things." She didn't elaborate on anything. There was too much pain, too much loss, too much alot of everything to even begin to desire to talk about it. Especially in front of someone who was so obviously new. Plus, she could see the thoughts already trickling through Anansi's mind. It was best to let things go.

"How's things below?" Always non-specifics. It was far safer, really, and she never could know just who was lurking around anymore. It was paranoid, perhaps, but then anytime she dropped her guard everything seemed to come crashing in. On the outside she looked every bit pleasant and friendly. But underneath it all? There'd be that ball of nerves and fear, aware of everything and everyone and ready in a moment's notice. The guns in the holsters hidden in holsters at her shoulders only gave some level of comfort.

Jesse's nervousness pulled a warm, understanding smile from her regardless and vaguely, she apologized.

::I'm sorry-- that was rude. I'm a mutant as well.:: she lowered the aviator sunglasses to show a pair of strange eyes before replacing them.

"I'm Alix, and.. well, I'm a telepath. And I guess you could say that I'm kind of.. all over the place. But if there's anything I-- or I'm sure Anansi here-- can do, we'd be glad to help." There was a vague level of pleasant authority and ease that she spoke with, calm and enduring while never bordering on anything near forceful.

Right there, what Anansi had just said – other physically altered mutants…under the city…have a place there – it was like Jesse had rolled a natural 20 for his destiny check. It did occur to him just for a moment that Anansi might be taking the piss, the setup sounded awfully like a cartoon. In his naivety though, such thoughts passed quickly. Anansi’s words may have sounded cliché but the tone of voice to Jesse at least sounded reassuring.
“Just clarifying ‘ut you live under the city somewhere and just like that, you’re inviting me to join? I was led to ‘believe that New Yorkers weren’t so nice.” There was obvious hope in his voice, rising above the nerves which were slowly falling to the wayside in the wake of Anansi’s friendly demeanor.

And suddenly there was a voice in his head, and none of the usual ones that all spoke with his own voice, but a lady voice. Jesse was quick to recover from his surprise. Telepathy was one of those things that Jesse, despite never having met one, was reasonably versed in – well he thought so. Certain sci-fi books he had read had usual telepathy as a central tool of the plot. What he had learned was that although Telepaths could read your mind and maybe even twist it, they rarely did so. If you were an attractive twenty something female, would you want to read the mind of every barely adult male? No sir, I don’t like it. From another book he read, apparently nine tenths of the mind was penguins anyway. Go figure.

Politeness though, that’s what’s comes first when meeting ladies. Clearly something good had stayed with him despite everything else. He had never really had a chance to practise social etiquette but now was a good opportunity to start.

“Alix, nice to meet you, I am Jesse.” That sounded about right didn’t it? He tipped his head in respect to her.

Jesse didn’t really understand the “revealing strange eyes” gesture. Compared to Anansi or himself, they were outright normal. What was the point in hiding eyes like that in a place like this, or if she was wearing sunglasses because it was bright, was there some significance in the gesture he had missed? Was she activating some super awesome mind powers?
