The world was going bananas right about now. Every good citizen beneath a mask or wearing an X on their chest had become targets to the very people that they swore to protect and serve. Villains of all types were starting to get in on the action to take down as many good guys as possible. It was a damn good thing that Everett’s sister did not live in New York and that no one knew about her, otherwise she could have been in some serious trouble just to get to him. The villainous types loved to use people’s family against them, one of the setbacks to be on the good side. With things relatively cooled down at the mansion now after Prodigy’s little psychotic episode Everett felt that now was a good time to hit up the city to check in on those he cared about, namely Paige. Since she left the institute, the two of them had spent very little time together. It seemed like the only time they ever did was because of some kind of threat to the world.

It was ridiculous that that had to be the reason for their little reunions. Today he was not alone in the trip. His teammate and friend Kim Parker decided to tag along which he was perfectly fine with. With the way that everything was right now traveling in pairs was a damn good idea. One could never know when something outrageous would happen. As they strolled through Mutant Town heading toward the XFI headquarters, Everett looked over to the blonde beauty and struck up another conversation. “Humanity is something else ain’t it? I mean I understand the whole self-preservation, but turning on someone that would jump in front of a bullet to save your life is just dirty. If the roles were reversed, I’d be trying help out people like us, not kill.”

The world was truly a messed up place when people started listening to a deranged woman that had already tried to kill them several times over.

“Humanity is something else ain’t it? I mean I understand the whole self-preservation, but turning on someone that would jump in front of a bullet to save your life is just dirty. If the roles were reversed, I’d be trying help out people like us, not kill.” Kimberly looked over to synch with an odd look in her eyes. Everything had placed the starlet squarely on edge, since her face was particularly recognizable. But it was a lot more than that. All of her friends from growing up were scattered around the world and she had no idea if they were okay or not. She exhaled and finally took a moment to respond to him.

"Its not surprising at all. And I wouldn't give either of us the benefit on the doubt on that one. It's not hard to vilify people. Not hard at all. Once you make them more than human, it becomes second nature. Even to mutants." Kimberly wasn't even attempting to act like an airhead today. Today was do or die. The last month had been do or die. When she took the time to consider it, there had been more time in recent memory where it was do or be done than not.

Kimberly had been notably stoic the last few days. She couldn't conjure the persona that she had lived with for so long in front of the world. What had once been second nature was now so obscure and foreign to her that she felt herself constantly on edge. She just wanted to do what she could to make everything go back to normal.

Now they were headed to the XFI headquarters. Kim was hoping that everyone there was okay still. It wouldn't long before complete hell broke out. Currently the streets were completely empty. For how long, that was completely up to the will of the fates and the whim of the universe.

Or whichever asshole of the hour would try to gundown the two heroes.

“Yea you’re right. Just pick out the one person in the crowd that has something unique or different about them.” Everett would never truly understand why the world operated like that. It had been the same way since pretty much the beginning of humankind. There were countless examples to show that if someone stood out or went against the grain they were labeled as enemy. They were to be feared and reprimanded. Perhaps one day in the distance future humanity, mutants included in that, would stop picking at the little differences and unite against the real enemies. It would probably never happen in his lifetime unfortunately that much he was certain of. There was not a lack of faith with the man it was just that his eyes were wide open to reality, and reality was a dirty son of a bitch.

Everett glanced around at their surroundings. This was the lowest activity rate that he had ever since in Mutant Town. There were police officers and SHIELD agents scattered throughout to keep the peace just incase, but the civilians were all but gone. Every now and again they would pass someone on their way to wherever, work probably. “The streets have a strange vibe about them when there aren’t any people bustling.” With what was going on though, it was probably a good thing. Scattered people meant fewer targets for anyone that had a mind to cause trouble. “It’s kinda like in the movies where you only see a couple of people in a place that is usually alive. You know something bad is about to happen, just not sure what.” Hopefully that was not the case with them. He did not feel like bothering with any kind of riff raff today. All the man wanted to do was check in on his friends and be about his business.

Kimberly listened to Sync, keeping her focus. She was making sure that noone was going to get a jump on them. Particularly in how she had been walking. Her stride was markedly slower than normal. She was humidifying the surrounding area while they walked. Doing so would allow her to pull moisture from the area around her faster than it would have had she been grasping at it blindly. She didn't want anyone full on surprising them. And with the current climate of things, she was certain someone was going to make a go at them.

"Knowing us, a hoard of mutant haters will rain from the skies with rocket launchers. Summoned here by Zeus." She rolled her eyes at the thought and then stopped. Just mid stride. Kimberly stopped and started laughing. At the absurdity of the idea and how in all actuality it wasn't so far fetched. She had been whisked away to other worlds. So were mutant haters from the skies with bazookas such a far-fetched concept? Nope. Not at all.

"I am sorry." She took a deep breath and smiled at Ev. "I have been a total stick in the mud all day. Total miss grumpy boots." She started walking again, pushing some of her hair back behind her ear.

Everett laughed a little at the mutant haters comment. In the world that they lived in that was not completely an irrational thought. Pretty much any and everything was possible. Worlds had collided, people transported to alternate dimensions, aliens, hidden dinosaurs, and being turned into giant bugs serving a genocidal queen. Nothing should ever surprise him again. “Nah, you’re alright. You have every right to be ‘miss grumpy boots’ as you put it with all the crazy that’s been going on. Besides, your grumpy face is pretty cute.” Everett gave her a friendly nudge on the arm. While the duo traversed the streets of Mutant Town, something strange began to happen. There was a slight vibration in the ground beneath their feet. The smile on Everett’s face was dropped for a concerned expression. “Hold on a second,” he said. “You feel that or am I just imagining things?” The intensity of the vibrations began to increase at a steady rate.

“Yep, definitely not my imagination.” The ground started to shake more violently until it cracks in a straight line for them. As the crack in the ground began to quickly split, Everett pulled Kim across and held her close as a chasm formed. He stared into her eyes for a moment that seemed longer than needed before taking a step back. “That was close, too damn close.”

“Heroes!” someone shouted.

Oh great, this was exactly what he had wanted to avoid. Down the road from them stood a man wearing all black clothing, face hidden beneath the hood of this jacket. Everett sighed, immediately synchronizing his aura with Kim’s.

“Today is the day that you die.”

“Is that right?” Everett asked.

“Oh yes. I’m not about to let you spandex-wearing jackasses kill the rest of us. Boys! Take them down!” The man slammed his hand into the ground, sending out a shockwave of seismic energy that ripped the street ahead of him to shreds. At the same time three other men emerged from their hiding spots with death in their eyes, death they intended to inflict on the X-Men.

Everett grumbled as he moved out of the direction of the concrete shards that sprang from the ground. They needed to come up with a plan of attack here. Four on two was not the best of odds, but manageable for people like them. Clearly one of the men was human or did not have an offensive ability given the glock in his hand. He would be target number one to keep any stray bullets from hitting anyone. “Kim!” he shouted over the rumbling of the earth. “Take care of tall, dark, and dumb over there. I got your back.” Everett stepped out into the open for a moment only long enough to draw fire and move into cover. Several bullets flew pass him. “Good thing that guy’s no marksman,” he said to himself.

Kimberly was thankful for Synch, flirtation and all. Because her mind had been a million miles away when the jackass ripped the street apart. If he had not reacted so swiftly, Kimberly might not still be standing.

When she was safely on the ground, a gigantic smirk crossed the blonde's face as they made their speeches. They had knocked several pipes under neath the street loose, and they were spewing fresh water and sewage into the gap below. Water. It was all Kimberly needed to get a solid handle on the situation.

"You jackholes just opened up your own can, and I am in a particularly prickly mood this afternoon." She pulled her hair back and formed a band of ice around it so it was pulled back in a ponytail and out of her face.

Synch offered his instructions to the blonde and she began to act immediately. Water spewed out of the chasm that had been opened to trap them. It spiraled around Kimberly, looking almost as if it was alive; an extension of Aqua's mind. "Thanks for the present." She flicked her wrist and a blob of water shot out, wrapping itself around the human's hand and forming a very solid and very dense ball of ice around his hands and the gun. The ice wouldn't be letting up any time soon.

Kimberly started in the direction of the three mutants. A scowl on her face. "Synch, I am filling the street." She wouldn't normally take this tactic, but Synch would be as in tune with the fog as she would be. She wanted to be certain there were no mutants waiting in the wings to gang up on them.

The water she had tanked thus far, all 90 gallons of it unfolded around her. It was an unreal sight to watch water hovering in midair sublimate into fog, but there it was. Expanding and warping into a thick blanket of fog filling the city street.

Even at her most untrained, Kimberly had always been able to feel water around her. If a figure even breathed inside her fog, the fog was displaced. It gave her a sort of sonar.

More water shot up from the broken pipes in the chasm, spiraling around Aqua. "No more surprises boys. Make a single move and I will pin you down where you stand." And to make her point clear, several spears of ice shot out of the fog to where each of them stood. The ice was dense enough to pierce the concrete. Kim was pissed.

The two of them had caught a very lucky break with this one. The mutant with the seismic powers had ripped up the streets which caused several of the pipes below to split open, providing them with more than enough water to work with. As Kimmy began her attack on the man with the gun, Everett pulled a stream of water from one of the busted pipes then sent it spiraling toward the main antagonist. He had expected the powerful stream to send the guy flying backwards, but that was not the case here. The man used his powers to create a shield of earth and concrete in front of him. The water slammed into the shield all but harmlessly. “Hmph.” Everett reached out to the water, causing it to freeze over the shield. Several shards of ice extended toward the mutant in an attempt to snag him, but he jumped back in time.

"Synch, I am filling the street."

“Gotcha!” Soon, the water in the air began to thicken into a blanket of fog. Even without the use of Kimmy’s powers he would have still been able to navigate his way to the enemies through the thick fog. He could clear as day see their auras shining bright.

“Ha!” said the man in black. “You think this is going to work? Not a chance in hell, bitch!”

“Hey watch your mouth, asshole,” said Everett.

Once again the ground began to shake violently along with several of the buildings in the vicinity. The man had every intention to drop the buildings down on top of them. That was one hell of a way to end a fight, but Everett was not about to let that happen. He ran forward through the fog, streams of water orbiting his body. One of them lashed out and ensnared the mutant’s arm. Another twirled around Everett’s before forming into an oversize fist made of ice. He yanked the man toward him with the snare, and once he was in range Everett drove the fist straight up into his gut. Saliva flew from the guy’s mouth on impact as he was bent over the appendage. “Goodnight.” He finished him off with a hard uppercut. Before the unconscious body could even hit the ground properly, a beam of hot energy struck Everett in the back, knocking him face first into the cracked street.

There was now a large, sizzling hole in the back of his shirt and scorch marks on his back. As quick as he could Everett snatched off the shirt and tossed it aside. “Aqua, watch out for that bastard.” He winced at the pain coursing through his back; hopefully the burn was only first degree.

"Synch! Are you okay?" She would normally have rushed in his direction, but Kimberly needed to hold her focus on the men in the street. If she let Synch's injury become a subject of her attention, they would be worse off. With Synch warning her about the beam shooting mutant Kimberly spun on her heel in the direction of the shot. It had shoved a great deal of her fog out of the way, and even though he couldn't see her, to the best of her knowledge at least; and she couldn't directly see him, she knew exactly where he stood.

"I tried to be nice. So don't call me a bitch!" She snarled. Spears of ice formed around her and she aimed one of them at him. The spear rushed through the air, piercing him in the shoulder and pulling him against the wall behind him.

"Seriously, stay down before I have to do serious damage." She wasn't sure why it needed saying, but with their numbers clearing, she gathered the fog back up around her into a sphere of water. It folded in on it self, warping and stretching around her like a gigantic amoeba.

She turned what remained of her spears on the third man. "Don't make me, please. I dont get much joy out of pinning down untrained mutants to the ground."

She didn't turn to synch, keeping her eyes locked on the third of the men, but she did call out. "Synch. Are you okay?"

“Yea, yea I’m fine.” As fine as a man with a red hot back could be. Everett looked back down at the leader of the group, still unconscious from the previous attack. To make sure that the guy did not get up to cause more trouble, Everett pulled the water from the ground and air around him and covered the mutant’s body from head to toe. The water then formed into an ice prison that kept him pinned to the ground. The only openings were the nose holes so the guy would not suffocate. He turned around when he heard a guy yell out in pain. He saw a spear of ice sticking out of the guy’s shoulder and pinning him to a wall. That must have been the bastard that took a shot at him from behind. Everett wanted to run over there and punch the living daylights out of the guy like he did his body, but Kimmy had him handled.

As the fog cleared he set eyes on the human. The man was beating his hand against the wall, trying desperately to break the thick layer of ice around it so he could use the gun. Everett sent a powerful torrent right at the guy and watched as it slammed into his chest, but that was not the end of it. The torrent lifted him up into the air about a good twenty feet before changing direction, mimicking Everett’s arm movements. It then slammed him back to ground level, knocking him out instantly. Certainly the human was going to be out for quite awhile which should give SHIELD plenty of time to get there and clean up the mess. Now there was only one more aggressor to take care of and Kimmy was already on him. Everett walked over and stood by her side. The guy looked scared, like he wanted nothing to do with what was going on. It was too late for that. He was the one that decided to take up arms against them. Now that his buddies were out he wanted to run.

“Look guys I didn’t want to do this in the first place,” he said. “It was all their idea.”

“But you went along anyway, why?” Everett asked.

The man took a couple of seconds to think then shrugged. “I don’t want to die, man. You saw what that bitch with the crazy eyes did. You heard her.”

Everett sighed. So many people had given in to their fear. Events like this would only continue happening unless the people grabbed a hold of themselves which was highly unlikely.

Kimberly stood there. The weight of the words the grunt sputtered out slamming into her. Her hand was raised to her face and massaged her temple as she tried to formulate some sort of response. But there wasn't any. She would be on the other end of this if she was still a human. Or maybe if the school hadn't reached out to her in the first place.

If she had been left to her own devices who would she possibly be? Aqua as a name was there to give her a healthy reminder of a world without heroes like her. Her counterpart a world a way was lost before she came and visited here.

"Dude." Kimberly started, leaning down at the man and leering at him.

"If it werent for people like us, there wouldn't be a world for that woman to even threaten." Kimberly spun on her heel back towards XFI headquarters, flipping her blonde hair behind her ear and rolling her eyes at the entire situation.

She was trying so hard to keep all doubt out of her heart about where this was going, but when you were just outside the eye of the storm, it was really difficult to breathe, let alone see the light.

"You okay Synch?" She looked over her shoulder at him as they continued forward.

What Kimberly said was the truth. The world needed people like them to keep it safe from dangerous and evil forces. Without the heroes, everything would be utter chaos, destruction everywhere one looked. Sure it was true that people still died every single day from violent crimes, but it was not like they could be everywhere at all times. The X-Men and teams like them stopped the small threats whenever possible, but their focus was mainly on the threats that ordinary cops could not handle in a million years such as this Illuminati nonsense. Everett hoped that the crap that the shadowy organization was kicking up would not last long. He did not know who exactly was in charge or even a part of the group outside of the public faces, but he wanted every last one of them in chains or in coffins. It made no difference to him at this point.

As Kimmy turned to leave, Everett punched him as hard as he could to knock him out cold. Agents of SHIELD were arriving to take care of the criminals that would have killed them and destroyed the neighborhood if not stopped. He caught back up with her. “Yea I’m fine. My back is a little sore, but nothing I can’t manage.” He had been burned before during the time the Purifiers attacked the mansion. The pain was not new to him, but it was still felt and stung like hell. He did not want Kim worry about him though so he pushed on through. “Come on let’s keep moving before SHIELD starts asking questions that I really don’t feel like answering right now.” He did not hate the organization like a lot of the X-people did. They were just men and women doing their jobs. But that did not mean he wanted to get the fifth degree from them.
