The country side, he had spent the last twenty years there. All twenty years of his life. It was all he had ever really known and he missed it dearly. He missed how the midnight heavens very littered with stars in unimaginable numbers, whiles the light pollution of the city overwhelmed and clouded from even his vision. He missed the fresh air, the smell of pollen and sunshine and bovine flatulence. The smog here filled his nostrils with their acrid stench. He missed the sounds of crickets chirping their mating calls as he was assaulted with car-horns and voices beyond count. New York was not a hospitable place for those born to a different life, and yet here he was.

Jesse? Jawsome? He wasn’t really sure where one ended and the other started this night. But he knew he was here because he chose to be. The country was not enough for him, not his destiny. He hadn’t found his destiny here either, not yet, but in his hope he could here her calling his name. Tonight destiny was not calling very loud at all and in his restlessness, he had gotten homesick.

He was a quarter ton of muscle and bone and armour with wicked teeth and claws who could see better than near any other creature on planet Earth – and he could turn invisible. To then see him stalking only flower petals, under a tree in the park, on his belly…well it made the world seem safe and well. He wasn’t really stalking flowers but he was watching this one.

Jesse had come to the park an hour earlier, to the best place he could find in the suburb to think of home. He lay on his belly under a tree with his massive arms propping his head. Under the flower in question was some sort of beetle he did not know by name. It was struggling to consume the peanut Jesse had so thoughtfully provided. He had plenty more for any creature of the park that so desired a midnight snack. There come two now.

Sure there was plenty of light in the park, even at midnight. It was Las Vegas but they did have street lighting. But Jesse didn’t need any of that. Simply rolling his eyes upward he spotted the two warm fuzzies coming down from the tree. Their movements were skittish, wary and otherwise very normal for the pair of Raccoons. They didn’t belong there in the park, but there they were. They were vary of the shape below them at the base of the tree but not scared. Jesse didn’t smell like any predator their raccoony instincts fretted about. What they could smell was the peanuts he carried.

All was going to plan. Jesse had spotted their warm shapes in the park a week earlier. Some patient spying had spotted their hidey hole and now he simply waited for their appearance. Most mammals were smart to a degree better than the other animal groups, and Raccoons especially so. This still didn’t stop them from being prey for large carnivorous patient reptilians. A little bit closer on the part of one raccoon snuffling around for peanuts and Jesse could have it for supper. It never came to that though.

Jesse much preferred veal. He wouldn’t dream of munching small woodland creatures. Slowly he released his stash of peanuts to the pawing of the small mammals and let them have their snack. They found the bug too and ate him as well as his peanut. The pair of raccoons scampered over Jesse body and sniffed all around for food. Dissatisfied with their findings, they left in search of tasty titbits in trash bins. Jesse watched them go, smiling his toothy smile. If two little raccoons could find a sanctuary in this city then he could damn well make one for himself and other right here too. He missed the country side but he wasn’t going anywhere soon.

Maybe Jawesome didn’t belong there but there he was. For better, not worse.
