Nicole slipped through the endless data that made the world wide web, able to maintain her code and shield herself from the torrent in which the infinite river of data. She kept seeing a single entity show up, over and over again, almost more than anything else; SHIELD. They had access to everything, eyes in everything, and some of the most advanced code she had seen in a long time. It didn’t take long to find a bit of code and trace it to its origins, the strand of data easily isolated, decrypted and unlocked… a message to someone from a very interesting man named Nick Fury. Even within the depths of the web, her queries weren’t given much information to go off of, so, she decided to go see for herself. Before that though, she carefully repackaged the message in its protective encryption, and sent it on it’s way… likely completely unnoticed, considering it had only been a full second in the real world, easily interpreted as lag.

The firewall and protective measures were very impressive once she arrived at her destination, but to Nicole, it was a challenge; a small cliff to scale with the appropriate hand holes hidden. Still, she was careful, as she had been through a few firewalls, and if they picked up on the fact that you were there, they could slam shut. Instead of risking that, she decided to try something else; she once created a copy of herself to talk to, as the infinite space of the internet was often very lonely… perhaps she could do something with that idea. Creating a small copy of herself, she programmed it to find the man named Nick Fury, and ask his permission to speak to Nicole directly, which would require a secure open channel. She included answers and all manners of conversation within the code, as he likely would have questions before permitting anything, but she would not be able to have even a fraction of the power Nicole now wielded.

After about 30 minutes in real time, Nicole reached the top of the cliff with the skill of a ninja, and her copy, which looked identical on a visual screen, but lacked her actual intelligence, was sent in a segmented data burst, nothing traceable and immensely stealthy, into the system. It would make the request, and if given consent, open a channel to the real Nicole. Then she could talk, and ask her questions. Perhaps someone would finally recognize her as a real person… instead of simply bits of code.

Nick Fury was a busy man, so busy, in fact, that there was suspicion that he deployed LMDs to handle various matters in order to maintain the illusion that he was everywhere and saw everything. Those suspicions were half right. He did indeed have a fairly substantial contingent of Life Model Decoys, but rarely did he use them to handle work that he could do himself. They were mostly required for missions where it was deemed too dangerous or too sensitive for him to complete it in person. No. Nicholas Joseph Fury was a hands on sort, and always had been. His record showed it. His position showed it.

Now, however, even Nick Fury had to eat dinner, and while, on occasion, he ate in the commissary, this was not one of those occasions. Given the current state of alert they were all in thanks to the supervillain cabal that called themselves "The Villains' Illuminati," he had far too much to do to engage in idle chit chat about what agent was dating who and whose sister was having a baby, or whatever the agents discussed in the public areas. The nature of SHIELD was that the left hand was often kept ignorant of what the right was doing in order to prevent compromising or breaches in the strictly maintained confidentalities of this or that. The commissary was branded a 'no work' zone, and so the talk within tended to be light and fluffy.

His dinner order had been sent to the kitchens, as he crossed the length of the helicarrier, approximately 1,500 feet, usually on foot, though there were gold cart sized transports within the helicarrier. He walked because he believed that a leader must be visible to those he led, and while he could beeline through the vehicle that was his home in about three minutes, he tended to meander a bit on his way to and from, so that he could meet with this scientist or that technician, so that the agents who requested a review or a face to face could get their five minutes. His dinner would be waiting when he got to his apartment, and the work he needed had already been transferred to his computer, which was why he was initially unsurprised when he stepped into his quarters and found his computer on and running...

... until he realized how hard it was running. A data transfer from one interconnected desktop to another should not produce such activity.

Tapping off the sleep mode, as he set his dinner tray down on his workstation, Fury was not greeted by the familiar rotating SHIELD emblem that was the standard screensaver for all system network computers on the official channels. He instead found himself looking at a digitized avatar of a female face. Calmly, he ticked the ship-wide communications systems, "Director Fury to Sub-Commander Hill."

"Hill here, sir," Maria said, her voice succinct and sharp as always. She'd refused to take a medical leave after the Skrull Invasion, and Fury admired her for it.

"My computer systems may be compromised," Fury said, "Inform Pilot that I need my connection isolated from critical ship function and all top levels of security."

"On it, sir," Hill said, "Do you need me to initialize data dump?"

The avatar's eyes suddenly opened and a synthesized voice said, "My original, Nicole Green, would like to speak to you, but requests your consent to access your systems in order to do so. Do you consent?"

Fury turned his good eye on the computer screen and said, "No, I don't think that will be necessary, but run a background check on the name Nicole Green, against all known terror cells, criminal databases and missing persons reports."

"That's a common name, sir, it might take some time," Hill said. "Can you give me anything to cross reference?"

"Give me five minutes," Fury said, "Just isolate my line."

He ticked off the communication and turned to the computer screen, taking his seat in front of it and said, "I give my consent. Nicole Green, you wanted my ear, you got it. What can I do for you, Miss Green?"

Nicole waited patiently beyond the firewalls for the response, and suddenly there was a flurry of activity. She didn’t want to pry, but being bored and capable of an ungodly amount of processes per second, curiosity quickly won the fight, and she found out that it was because her duplicate had been tagged. They were trying to find out information about her, so, knowing full well that she had nothing to hide, she provided the information to the sender directly, giving her every bit of information she had on herself, which didn’t take long to collect considering she knew her own social security number, and even filled in the bits about the circumstance of her disappearance, most notably that she had been sucked into the internet and then torn asunder initially, then pieced herself back together.

Once that information had been sent, she stopped prying as her duplicate sent the confirmation for her to enter. Using a much more concentrated data stream, she decided to only project her presence into the system, that way she didn’t fry anything by overclocking their processors. She weaved through until she isolated the computer her duplicate was inhabiting, and deleted the code, noting that he had given permission almost immediately, but the request for information on Nicole had come from Mr. Fury himself, as an order. She immediately made a query, and found out that it was an advanced form of military system… maybe this had been a mistake. That was fine, nothing risked, nothing gained.

A new avatar emerged on the screen, the old one fading and ceasing to exist. The new avatar was very similar, but the way it walked in from the side of the screen, and an odd look in the eye that represented that this was not just a program, but a living being. “I’m sorry. I interrupted your meal… please eat, I promise I won’t do anything bad,” she started, holding up her hands in a way that any normal person would if they were afraid they offended someone they didn’t mean to.

“My name is Nicole. To put this as simply as I can… I want to do something productive. I live in the internet, and I keep seeing SHIELD everywhere I go, so, I was wondering if you knew a place where I could work, or at least keep me from getting bored. I am capable of more processes per second than your computer systems can generate in a minute… so not doing anything is not something I can really do anymore.”

She paused for a second, allowing this to sink in for a moment, which was hard. She could think about something, play a hundred games of chess, and construct a skyscraper through a Computer Aided Drafting program in the blink of an eye, so she had to consciously time herself pausing to ensure that she didn’t seem like she was rushing him.

“Also, it seems like your system has a lot of military type stuff in it, so I don’t think I will go poking around unless you want me to. I would hate to see something I shouldn’t and offend you.” That was hard for her too… she craved information, and it seemed like she could probably learn a lot by simply rummaging through the systems and learning as much as she could, but there was likely fail safes to ensure that didn’t happen, and she had just met the man, she didn’t want to test him.

Instead, she rendered the image of her ‘zooming out’, an optical illusion of the screen, as she rendered her full body on the screen. Her brown hair was braided, and her clothing was a simple pair of Sweatpants and a sweatshirt, hot pink running shoes on her feet. Nothing could really be taken offensively by the outfit, and she had been meaning to work on her digital wardrobe. Perhaps she would do that afterwards, but for the moment, she was focused on Mr. Fury completely.

Fury listened to the plea, while his one eye fell on the communications system, Nicole Green's information scrolling up almost instantly, too quickly and too pinpoint to have been anything but information given by this Nicole herself.

"Nicole Lee Green, born April 1st, 1992 in Wasilla, AK. to Rose and Brian Green," Nick said, reading off the information, "Reported missing as of..." he looked at the scrolling words. "Mutant, clearly."

"So, Miss Green," Fury said, "You break into my systems, without so much as a by your leave, and you expect me to point you in the direction of a job? If you have been seeing our name everywhere then you clearly understand what sort of organization I run here, but let me spell things out for you very clearly. We are the Strategic Homeland Intervention, Enforcement and Logistics Division, we are the eyes and the ears of a world that's changing faster than we're ready for. This isn't the sort of job we offer to summer interns for college credit, you understand."

Out of sight of the computer monitor, though frankly, he wasn't entirely certain if she was able to see him the way he could see her, and if so how, his hands flew over the keyboard of the communications system, secure in the knowledge that this digital entity was contained within his personal line, one that had been isolated from the rest of the helicarrier intraweb. He was directing his technicians to trace this line and to entirely lock this girl into the system if she was broadcasting from an outside source. He wanted a trace on her.

"Explain to me how you live in the internet," he said, stalling techniques to keep her talking until they were able to trace her, "You're a digital file? I'm an old man, Miss Green, despite my rakishly youthful looks. Computers are voodoo and witchcraft to me, so I take what I can, and I leave the rest to my competent and much younger technicians. So, explain to me in the most simple terms what exactly you've become and why I should trust you in our highly classified systems, if you'd be so very kind."

His voice was almost entirely calm, unflappable maybe would be a good word. He worked alongside gods, legends and superheroes. A computerized valley girl wasn't anything he couldn't handle.

Nicole listened to his response, carefully grabbing each word and processing it through her systems. The moment that she realized that she didn’t understand the phrase ‘by your leave’, she researched it in an instant. Without asking permission, an old phrase that began in early 19th century, one of the earliest printed use from The New-England Magazine Volume 3, September 1832. This was something that she had anticipated, and had carefully calculated her response for. She also noted that he was doing something else, and while he wasn’t sure exactly what, she did realize that her connection was becoming more and more isolated. He didn’t trust her, and he had a fair enough reason for that.

He wanted explanation of herself, and claimed to be a caveman in comparison, although she honestly didn’t believe that for a moment. Anyone who was supposed to be a head honcho of something that she could be compare with Homeland Security was likely well versed in technology, but he wanted a simple explanation. Still, something seemed off… perhaps he was stalling. She then felt the probe that was querying her for an address… a small bit of code that had no purpose aside trying to locate her… and she let it try. She had no true location.

“Mr. Fury, you’re not going to have any luck finding me. When I say I live in the web, picture it as a fish in an aquarium. I am constantly moving, the tide of the internet pushing, pulling and flowing in ways impossible with actual bodies of water. The only difference is that I am finally not at the tide’s mercy. No system in the world could house my complicated being in a single location, so the internet is my home. In regards to trust, I could have easily dug through your files and found out more information about your agency… or simply bypassed the formality of my emissary requesting permission into your system, but I didn’t. I chose to request your permission, and I have been good and haven’t done anything in regards to you tightening the space in which we can talk, even though I could easily tear the code constricting me line by line asunder.”

She paused, trying to make him realize that she wasn’t nearly as incapable as she might seem. She also liked using the word ‘asunder’… old words like that are something that she liked to use as a simple personal preference… and they sounded more menacing. She might start using ‘by your leave’ as well. Fun words.

“I’m not asking to be an agent or whatever your subordinates are labeled… I don't even have to be allowed information or work here at all if you don't trust me that much, but I simply want to do something that might be useful. I want direction, a task, before the brand of boredom turns to something more troublesome.”

The plea had a little more desperation in it this time, as she was unsure how much more idle time with no tasking she could take before she started just breaking into places for no reason. She had to do something... anything...

The girl started to boast about the intricacy of her program, and Fury would have rolled his eyes if was prone to dramatics, "Yes, Miss Green, I understand you are a unique and special snowflake. Let me explain something about humanity vs a computer. You're bragging to me about how complex you are, and how incredibly powerful you are, speaking about how lucky I am that you didn't decide to just break into my systems and do a great deal of damage, but no matter what it is you decide to do, the fact of the matter is, if you were to crash my systems, crash all the systems, if you thought you could just pull the plug on technology, the human race would continue to survive, it'll struggle but we will rebuild. I doubt you'll last very long without electrical input. So, while I understand you aren't making any threats, I want you to get clear that you aren't running this show. So, you want my help, you're going to have to bear with me."

He steepled his fingers beneath his chin and said, "You came to me, rather than a mutant faction, why? The only thing preternatural about me is my long life, and even that comes out of a syringe once a week. I don't entirely understand mutants, the evolutionary characteristics don't seem to make sense. Men who can fly, women who can shoot fireballs, little girls who get themselves sucked into computers. How exactly is that supposed to enhance our race?"

She pleaded again with him to be allowed to do something before her boredom turned dangerous, and Nick turned to his dinner tray, "Now, that, Miss Green does sound like a threat, and since you're attempting to get my help, I'm going to pretend I didn't hear you say that. That proves to me, however, that you don't need my help, but you do need someone's. What is it you think you can do for me, for any of us, that we can't do ourselves with a keyboard and access to google?"

Nicole seemed to be hit by Fury’s words. Her avatar didn’t seem as vibrant as before, and she looked towards her feet. The truth of the matter was that she wished she could be a part of humanity, regardless of her power within the internet. He questioned about the mutant factions, and almost immediately she began to do some digging into the various ones available. There was sparse mention of a few various ones through the internet, but most of the information was in secure servers. Her avatar shuffled around a bit, listening to him talk, until he talked about how she had just threatened him. She looked up quickly and held her hands up.

“That’s not what I meant at all! I’m sure that you and Homeland Security and all them help a lot of people… and I definitely don’t want to do anything to slow you down. What I mean is that most of the time that someone smart doesn’t have a goal, they start trying things that usually wind up getting them in trouble.” She paused for a moment, considering her next words, and still using a lot of her processes to look into the various mutant groups that were available and find out anything that was public knowledge about them.

“I know that I don’t hold all the cards. I wish… I wish I was just a regular girl, living at home, and going for a run every morning. I didn’t choose this. And to be honest, I don’t know what all I can do while I am stuck like this. The reason I came to you is because there is no one more thoroughly spread through the World Wide Web like SHIELD, so I thought that it might be the place where I can do the most good. Maybe I was wrong, and if you want, I’ll go.” She paused again, and crossed her arms, finally looking up towards the man she was addressing. She would find someone to find her humanity, even if this man wouldn’t. She was more than just a program, but she wouldn’t let it show how much his perception had hurt her.

"Good you might be able to do, but not until you have some degree of control over your powers," Fury said, "My Agents, my ship, my systems may be of the highest order of technology, but not everything is done within an arm's length of a computer monitor, not by half. I applaud your desire to want to do what's right, to help the world, believe me, far more than not take the other path, but I need my people to be of a more rounded profile."

"Sir," Maria came back on the comm, "Your network has been isolated from the Shield intraweb. If she's really in there, we can do a data purge and flush her out maybe. I've alerted Pilot to..."

"Belay that, Sub-Commander," Fury said, "Open a line to the Xavier School. This isn't a terrorist attack, it's a mutant kid in need of power control."

"Sir, the Xavier School?" Hill frowned, "Since Summers's death and the start of this Killuminati nonsense, they haven't been very... open."

"Until some other mutant school is founded, they're going to have to do," Fury said, "So, if you would."

Hill went about following his orders, and Fury turned his attention back to the young lady in the computer, "I'm going to open up some files for you to access regarding the Xavier School. You want to learn how to use your powers, these are the people to do that. You want to regain a physical form, these are them. You want to do some good in the world... well, despite the occasion disagreement my people have with theirs, this is the place you need to be. You want me to point you a direction, Miss Green, this is it."

Nicole stayed silent, still a bit annoyed and wondering if she was going to be brushed off like some sort of annoying gnat, but he didn’t. He seemed to finally come around and listen to what she had actually been saying and the intent behind it, but she wasn’t what he needed in whatever organization that he actually ran. She listened in this time as a woman came on the line, saying that she could purge Nicole out of the system, and while a tiny part of her wanted to see her try, just to find out what it was like, she would have been lying if she didn’t have a subconscious sigh of relief when Fury addressed the situation properly.

The moment that he mentioned Xavier School, she started focusing her processes doing research into that particular task. If she was going to be referred somewhere, she should be able to find out more information about it than SHIELD had offered on the public data streams. Publicly Established in 1998 as Xavier’s School for Gifted Youngsters, and from there had been a place where young people had gone. Everything in the school’s description was very carefully worded, never quite saying ‘mutant’ but certainly hinting about it. When doing a generic ping trying to find the servers that were based at the location provided, it came back with nothing, which was both curious and slightly frightening. She could start looking for packets with their name on it, but that hadn’t exactly worked well in regards to SHIELD, even if it had achieved her goal.

Nick Fury then promised her some information regarding the school, and her avatar seemed to visibly brighten, as though the thought that she was going to get some information was a welcome idea. The truth was that she thirsted for information the way most people eat or drink. The more information she had, the more prepared she could be, and the less that she would get caught off guard. She queried on ‘Summers’ as well, but there were a LOT of Summers, and the roster for the school was not available unless she tried to dig, and he had promised information, so she would be good and wait. ‘Killuminati’ didn’t register many reliable results either.

He addressed her again, and she remained silent and listened. She quirked an eyebrow at the ‘physical form’ aspect, unsure if she should start putting a hope that it was possible. The entirety of the internet had not been able to give her much in that regards, so she wasn’t sure if that was something she should put her faith in, but she would note it and query on it later.

“You have been infinitely helpful, please allow me to return the favor. I will leave an icon on your desktop, my name and face. If you ever need help breaking into something or finding something in this ungodly fishtank, it will open a direct connection to me, and I will see what I can do. I am in your debt.” She finished with an award winning smile, and patiently waited for the promised data, curious of it’s contents.

The files were simple, since Fury was damned if he was going to give her classified information like the school roster, the types of mutants there, the powers they had, the families they came from. Those were not matter of public record because for the most part the student body was made up of minors and juveniles and without authorization from their parents and guardians, he was not going to put a target on their head anymore than their genetic code already had.

And, it wasn't his place to out them as the headquarters and home base of the some times governmentally sanctioned but usually vigilante superhero group, the X-Men.

So the files were basic, history of the property the school was built on, the writings and papers presented by the last familial resident of the ancient homestead, Professor Charles Francis Xavier, the brilliant geneticist and tireless advocate for the rights of the growing mutant population. There were news articles regarding his work and then his disappearance. There was the mention of the school being taken over by the members of his first class. Attacks on the building and the student body. The outting of the school after the bombing by Scott Summers at the trial of his younger brother who had confessed to being the Horseman known as War. The reopening of the school, with the press conference where Scott had announced that they were going to continue to educate mutants and by doing so hopefully teach the humans a thing or two as well. There were a lot of files and there was a lot to sift through. Xavier's School for Gifted Youngsters was not something to be overlooked.

Once the files were sent, Fury said, "Their headmaster was recently murdered, Miss Green, and we don't know by who or why, but it is apparently in connection with these attacks by the so called Illuminati, as far as we've been able to determine. Mutants are high on the Illuminati's kill list, so the school is maintaining strict security. You want to make a good impression, you want help, you want to help? You show them respect, you knock politely, and you do what they want to make them feel comfortable."

She mentioned the icon, and Fury smiled, "Miss Green, you take care of yourself first, and then when you are under control and completely trained in the proper usage of your powers, you look me up. I have a digital girl, already, but I am a cautious man. I like to know there redundancies in the system."

The files were sent to her through the connection, and she quickly poured over the contents, absorbing the information like the desert did rain. It was nothing too specific, so this must have been the information that was non-classified, but it was a start none the less. She compiled it with the other information she had been finding around the internet, and had a dedicated file to this particular topic. It wasn’t much to go off of beside what was probably most obviously public knowledge and a façade to keep things under wraps, but it was more than she had a few minutes ago.

What wasn’t was the attacks that had come to the school’s doorstep. Apparently, trying to help people made you a target for all manners of bad people. She wasn’t sure if she could help, but if she could, she certainly would.

He spoke again, telling her what to do in order to make a good first impression… and she took serious note of those suggestions. The last thing she wanted was to step on toes in a place where she was seeking help, and wanted to help out, so she started coming up with ideas that would allow her to give them the space they needed while still securing a line of communication. Text comms seemed like the most plausible route.

“Your help has been invaluable Mr. Fury. Thank you for everything.”

Without another word, she retreated from the system, the only evidence that she had been there at all being the small icon on his desktop with her name and face. She had no doubt that he would notice it, but she doubted highly she would ever call upon her, especially if he already had someone with similar abilities. She then began to surf the ebb and flow of the net, collecting more data about the group of people that she had a little information on, adding and compiling data for the next few days, and creating a simple text communications program that wouldn’t intrude on the systems that they had in place.
