Things were never easy, at least not the things that mattered.

And especially not when dealing with men such as Fury. He was the consummate military man, who he answered to and his reasons for virtually everything he did was all classified as far as Domino was concerned. She answered to him, not the other way around and she had known that when she’d arranged their little meeting.

To say that it was uncomfortable would have been a gross understatement. There were few people that really made Domino nervous, but as he sat across from her and looked at her with a cold glimmer in that one visible eye she knew for sure that he was one of them. And though she’d managed to keep her cool, though she’d managed to state her piece with an unwavering voice and make a very plain argument for her point of view she had to admit that as he looked back at her in contemplative silence before she answered that she felt a small quiver deep within her. It was an alien feeling to her, and she detested it.

But in the end he’d consented, though in the end it had come off as his own idea.

Martinique Jason was too valuable to leave in a SHIELD prison. With ties to both the Hellfire Club and the Brotherhood, she was an extremely valuable asset to SHIELD. And who knew her better than Domino to be her primary point of contact? She might be a new agent, and might actually still be under her own brand of surveillance, but in the end it was agreed that Martinique Jason could most definitely be of some use to SHIELD.

The doors to the holding facilities opened up and Domino walked in. Security had still been fairly tight on Marty, though had relaxed somewhat over the last week or so. Right now Domino walked in without the accompaniment of any guards. That was definitely a change. She stopped in her tracks and looked at Marty, giving her a half-hearted smile and then coming over to sit in the chair across from her. This wasn’t exactly something you jumped right into without a little verbal foreplay after all. She wasn’t really sure how Marty would react to what she was suggesting.

“How are you feeling today?”

With the cuff around her wrist, Martinique had grown bored and tired. It was hard not to hear anything else but her own thoughts. Her own thoughts were so damn boring! And so she flipped through the book they allowed her to have - Moby Dick - and tried to read. Martinique wasn't any sort of academic and many of the words and themes simply escaped her, but she did what she could to pass time. All she really wanted was a few soap operas or telenovelas to watch. At the very least, she could have just escaped into something she could understand and maybe even relate to.

It was better to just lay on her cot and stare at the ceiling until someone came by to talk with her. That didn't happen often enough, either. Martinique knew that she wasn't a very important person, but she was shown enough as she would watch the guards start to dwindle down to one and then they weren't around as often as before. And then out in the hallway, she could see agents walking around, going into other cells. Just not hers. So, Martinique took that to mean that she wasn't important at all. No Brotherhood rescue. No father coming for her. Nothing. Well, at the very least she had Neena and if she was going to waste away in this jail, then she could beg Neena for better books and maybe a few videos to watch.

When the doors opened, Martinique sat up in the bed and stared. She knew well enough not to rush into Neena's arms and kiss the woman she loved, but it was hard to hold back. She smiled and glanced around. No guards here, either. Of course, they had cameras and all sorts of surveillance devices. This wasn't a private meeting no matter how many guards there were not there. But, maybe, just maybe, she could reach her hand over a bit and touch Neena. Just a little. So, she sat fully up and placed her feet on the floor, looking over at Neena and offering a smile back.

"Much better. Much better. Do I look better?" This was usual Marty and she turned her head sideways so that Domino could see where her scars had healed and her hair was starting to grow back. Thank goodness for Sahara.

“You look great,” Neena said with a genuine smile as she inspected the scar. She scooted closer, even going so far as to touch the side of her hair lightly as she purposefully took the time to really look. And to be honest, she really did. The hair was growing back. It might be a while, but it certainly looked like once the hair did grow back it would be difficult to see any sign of this wound at all. She leaned back again and caught her eyes. “No, you really look amazing.”

It was somewhat amusing to her that the first words out of Marty’s mouth were about how she looked. She put far too much emphasis on that feature-when she had so much more to offer the world than just her stunning appearance. Maybe she didn’t know that yet.

“I have to talk to you,” Neena said with a little more seriousness as she prepared for the shift in topics. “But first things first…” She reached out and took hold of the cuff that was strapped around Marty’s arm. With a clicking sound the clasp popped open and she pulled the nullifying bracelet off and set it on the table. “No more null cuffs. No more lockdown. No more..boredom and loneliness.” She smiled at her. “I’ve convinced them, at least in part and at least for now that you are not a hardened and violent terrorist.” Even hearing that title in reference to Martinique sounded patently absurd and made her laugh a little. “Hell, compared to me and how I used to be you’re a regular angel.”

But this was just part of getting the good news out of the way, wasn’t it. It was fairly clear that there was more to come, but Neena didn’t want to plow forward with it just yet. She wanted to see how Marty reacted to the first part, so she paused and put a hand on Marty’s knee.

Smiling broadly, Martinique ran a few fingers through her hair and then shook her head a bit. She didn't like the fact that her hair wasn't all that fashionable at the moment, but it was as good as it could get without her using her illusions. Speaking of, however, Neena pulled the cuff of of Martinique's wrist and immediately, everything seemed to rush back. The voices in her head, the illusion of herself ... it had been so long (or at least it felt like it had been so long) since she had the ability to color herself the way she wished to be seen that immediately she wrapped herself in the illusion of the beautiful Martinique - the bombshell model - but still in her SHIELD-given clothing.

With a squeal, Martinique jumped up and wrapped her arm around Neena's neck, hugging her tight. "Oh, you see? You see! I knew you would say so - I'm not... I wasn't myself and you know that and they know that. See?" Before Neena could either blush - did she do such a thing anyway? - or push Martinique away, she pulled away and sat down, weaving her illusion so perfectly that it was hard to believe a more bedraggled and haggard woman had been there in her stead.

Laying her hand atop of Neena's, Martinique smiled and said, "So, do we get to go home? I've got a lot to do, you know. The flat... I left it a mess. It's probably overrun by creatures!" She paused and then inhaled sharply, saying "Oh! And Father! I have to tell him that I'm alright! He's probably been worrying so much..." She swung her legs back and forth on the cot, thinking of all the things she could do when she was released.

It was impossible not to laugh a little when Marty leaped across the room and gave her a big appreciative hug. It struck her just how few people would actually dare to do that in the first place. Domino didn’t really come off as warm or fuzzy in any way shape or form. Furthermore, if nearly anyone else had tried it she might have followed through with an elbow uppercutting into the nose or a well-planted boot heel to the solar plexus when they got close.

Instead she reached her arms up and returned the gesture gladly. “I know, you didn’t have to convince me. I knew all along,” she said. But she had to keep objective. It had killed her, even the thought of having to pretend like she didn’t think that Marty was completely innocent in all of this nonsense. She watched her sit down, silently mourning the loss of the contact she’d been craving for what seemed so long now, and marveling at how quickly Martinique had covered her appearance with illusion. She’d looked good all along. Marty had a kind of natural beauty that made Domino wonder if she could ever not look good. But now she was immaculate, her hair perfect and she even seemed to have the most exotic smelling perfume on.

Domino smiled and sat back a little as Marty went on. The smile faded immediately at the mention of her father and her fingers curled into a fist. “Oh yes, I’m sure he’s so very worried,” she said in even tones. “Perhaps I should go visit him with you?” Her words were laced with enmity and unspoken threat. She tried to smile to take some of the edge off, and immediately changed the subject.

“But we shouldn’t make too many plans yet, dear Marty. There’s more to the story,” she said. “You are free, of course…absolved from your dealings with the Brotherhood to a degree. But there’s more.” She paused, hoping the sobriety in her tone would help Marty to pay very close attention to what she was about to say. “You have some very important knowledge and who you have known and who you have met has become incredibly…valuable and significant in terms of the security of…” Taking in a deep breath she let it out in a sigh and hung her head.

“Look Marty, we’ve always been straight with each other. I’m not going to sugar coat this bullshit. You’re not a prisoner anymore. What you are is an asset to S.H.I.E.L.D.” She held her gaze for a long moment and shrugged. “And I…I am your handler.”

Though Martinique could read Neena's mind, she didn't. She put a block up for the other woman for the most part so that she wouldn't read anything she shouldn't see. It was something she did because of the way she felt for the other woman and it wasn't something she often did - not even for those that requested (or demanded) it from her. For Neena, things were different and that's why she could turn her face and press a kiss to the woman's cheek before pulling back. To the outside, it might all be a bit European for their taste, but Marty couldn't help and offer a hint of affection.

Though she might come off as a ditz and her beauty would definitely lead one to believe that she relied more on it than any smarts, Martinique knew the tone Domino was using when she mentioned her father and she nodded slightly and murmured, "I'm not sure if you'll get along..." But she was changing the subject and so Martinique would as well. She could feel the animosity toward Jason in Neena's tone without looking below the surface and knew she didn't want to subject her father to anything more than a slap on the wrist for not coming to Marty's rescue.

She inhaled and then turned her gaze to Domino, listening now that she silently demanded it. After that, she listened to everything the other woman had to say, her brows knitting together in a frown as she tried to make sense of what was being said.

"An asset?" That was the first question. She wasn't an asset to anyone - save for Neena and her father, of course. Perhaps Exodus had first thought her an asset, but she never got that power boosting thingy and immediately it made her feel as if she weren't. So this 'Shield' thinks that she's an asset, do they? Because of who she knows and who she's met? Interesting.

"My handler?" That was the second question. The only sort of 'handler' that Marty was familiar with were those that handled circus animals of some sort. Was she a circus animal? She worked against the temptation to peer into Neena's mind to find out more of what she was saying. Instead, she did it the normal way. "Okay, but what does this all mean? Am I going to live at my flat? Am I 'Charlie's Angels'? Are you 'Charlie'?" To that she smiled and flipped her hair a bit, the fringes falling like Farrah Fawcetts before settling back to Marty's usual curled coiff.

Her confusion was more than a little understandable. Marty came from a world of glitter and gold, camera flashes and paparazzi, she wasn’t used to the subterfuge and the danger inherent in the circles that Domino had run in for oh so long now. She was a smart girl, no matter how much she thought it was beneficial to pretend otherwise sometimes. She would understand this fairly easily, of that Domino was sure.

And so she let Marty go on for a moment, smiling lightly at the mention of Charlie’s Angels. “You can look at it that way if you like, dear.” She took a deep breath. “But essentially it’s like this…you have a lot of information in your head. Things you might not even know you have, and it puts you into a very special category. You’re not guilty, so we can’t lock you away. And in talking to them I seemed to convince them that you are actually quite valuable.”

Which she was in so many ways.

“So it was decided that you really can’t just leave either. There will be people looking for you. The Brotherhood, whether through pride or other means does not let go of their assets quite so easily. If they capture you again I guarantee they will make sure you either do more damage in the name of their ridiculous cause or they make sure you are of no use to anyone.” She paused there and let that sink in. “So yes, we will be working together. I’m sort of a contact point for you, but I believe more than that…I will be working very close with you.” She didn’t hide the subtext there. “Keeping an eye on your every move if you will.” Her smirk was teasing. “Even if I have to go deep, undercover.”

And there you had it.

She smiled broadly and put a hand on Marty’s knee. “I guarantee you it will not be dull.” And then she stood. “Now come on, let’s get you out of here. Your flat is secured for now, but I’ll head over there with you just to make sure.” There was almost no mistaking the undertones now.

After all, it had been so long.

Again... to be valuable... It was an important thing. It was something that could thrill Martinique and make her happy and the fact that Domino could help bring it to her, well... Her face was speaking volumes in her lip-biting grin. She listened to everything the other woman said and tried her best not to start giggling at the last part of it. Really, it was the best way for any of this to end up, wasn't it? Oh, Martinique didn't think that any of the Brotherhood would come back for her - what did she matter anyway? In fact, they had told her that she'd have to forget everyone and everything for them, what was the difference now? The names had changed, but the company was much more preferable.

"I can't believe all of this, Neena." Martinique murmured and then lifted up again to wrap her arms around the other woman. This time, she was slow and deliberate, but didn't go overboard. She knew that people were watching and Neena kept a lot of her insinuations under the radar, so other than give the woman a hearty hug, she could simply press her lips to Neena's ear and murmur what she wanted only the other woman to hear. "I never thought that you felt this way... You are saving my life, are you not? I'll never be able to repay you, but I'll try."

She pulled away and stood next to Domino, looking down at the seated woman. She honestly didn't know where the two of them had stood and the injuries to her mind muddled everything so awfully. Now, Martinique had no doubt as to what she meant to Neena and it made things a lot clearer for her, as well. No, she had never been much of a one-woman girl, but things could change, right? Domino, Remy, Sahara... They had all helped Martinique when she might not have deserved it. She had a lot to be thankful for, a lot to contemplate, but she also seemed to have a lot of people she could lean on. That was something of a surprise to a woman who not so long ago was ready to sell her soul for the chance to be something to somebody.
