CHARACTER INFORMATION ![]() Cobie Smulders. CANON OR ORIGINAL: Canon. AFFILIATION: SHIELD - Sub-Director. FULL NAME: Maria Hill. CURRENT AGE: 35. BASE OF OPERATIONS: New York Hellicarrier. HEIGHT: 5’8 EYES: Blue. HAIR: Dark brown. UNIFORM: Basic SHIELD uniform. POWERS: N/A. Baseline human. HISTORY Born in Chicago, Maria’s upbringing was not ideal; her mother died giving birth to her, and her father could not recover from the loss, taking his resentment out on Maria. He never let Maria forget that her mother had given her life to bring her into the world. As she grew older, rather than being beaten down by her difficult relationship with her father and the absence of her mother, she developed a self assured inner strength that is still evident today. Once she had graduated from high school, Maria had no interest in staying in her father’s house one moment longer than she needed to, and opted to join the United States Army. After her training was completed she was earmarked as a potential recruit for SHIELD, and she was approached by an agent to discuss the opportunity. Maria did not take much persuading to join SHIELD’s training programme rather than continue in the Army. Maria began a second round of recruitment training and testing, this time with SHIELD, before becoming a junior agent. From there she worked her way up the ranks, gaining a large amount of experience. She was generally considered to a highly competent agent, and was given every opportunity to improve her position within the organisation. When Apocalypse hit, Maria was in New York, and faced off against War and his converts. It was during this fight that she found herself isolated and overwhelmed, eventually becoming a convert herself. She was saved by Volt, who managed to fry the nano tech coursing through her body, restoring her to her right mind and body. Later, she flew a Quinjet to the Mansion to help Volt evacuate some of the younger X-Men and assorted other mutants. On route to Graymalkin, the hurricane became too dangerous to continue flying in and Maria chose to dock at a nearby fuelling station. After the EMP shut down the electrical systems which kept the station hovering in the sky, Maria worked with the various mutants on board to stop the station from crashing down to earth. Following the defeat of Apocalypse, Maria continued on with SHIELD, under the leadership of Cameron Hodge. When Hodge was killed by the Brotherhood, Maria was a little surprised to find that she had been nominated to take over as the Director of SHIELD. She did her best to reverse the damage done by Hodge while ensuring that her agents remained focusing on policing and protecting the citizens of the world. With the rise of the Purifiers, Maria’s job became that much harder, trying to keep the peace between humans and mutants. She clashed with Mayor Risman when Wanda Maximoff erected the dome around Mutant Town, and revealed that she was not a puppet he could pull the strings of. When the dome finally went down, Hill approached Wanda Maximoff, along with Mayor Risman to secure a truce. During the riot that followed, Maria authorised her agents to keep the peace, strictly prohibiting lethal force in the hope of preventing the situation from escalating further. She then tasked Captain America with bringing an end to the madness when it was revealed that the entire situation was a set up. After the eventual defeat of Risman, Stryker and the Purifiers, Hill had little time draw breath before she was taken captive by the Skrulls. Held in an isolated high security cell in Skrullos, Maria had no idea what was happening on Earth, as the Skrull Queen took on her form and launched an invasion. Once she was freed from captivity, Maria returned to Earth in time to find that the Skrulls had been beaten back and Nick Fury had reappeared. In the aftermath of the Skrulls, Maria willingly stepped back from her role as Director, allowing Fury to take over once more, with Maria shifting into the position of Sub-Director of SHIELD. Currently she is continuing as Fury’s right hand woman, facing the emerging threat presented by the Illuminati. |
