Evening (7:30 pm), Tuesday May 2nd, 2013
Location: Ariel Jensen’s apartment, Mutant Town, New York

Sahara did enjoy the summer time, slowly going towards autumn but still warm. Everyone that had been walking along the street in the enjoying the weather, it wasn’t predicted to rain that night but Sahara’s analysis of the weather patterns always kept her a bit paranoid of the possibility of rain, this was obviously shown by how she dressed for the evening. She looked different as well, as if some experiences recently had allowed her to mature in not just herself but also how she looked like she was more serious about life. She still held her position at Horizon Labs, however many occurrences in that area had caused her to miss going to work. She worked from home since then and had not made contact with others from her job since the incident at a shady bar a few days ago.

Locking herself up in her apartment gave her much time to think about how she lived her life. Sahara began to see that she should begin to look at things differently, as living obliviously as to what’s going on wasn’t working out here, sure back in Seattle it was perfect but here, in Mutant Town, it was different. She still held many of her opinions but remained friendly, still chirpy but obviously not taking nonsense as much as she used to and being more of a grown up. All these ideas and new views made her do something to show how she would’ve liked to change her outlook but not so insane that she was unrecognisable, after finally being convinced by a newly made friend she gave her hair a good bleach and cut with the help of her friend. People did have some trouble recognising her at first but clearly they liked her new look, large black pigtails were no longer a thing for her. She typically still held her favourite dress code of Goth-Scientist, one of the ideals that she would refuse to change.

Holding the brown paper-bag of goodies for the night, Sahara walked up the stairs towards the apartment of Ariel Jensen, a close friend that she’d never expect to become friends with so soon after being accepted to work in Horizon Labs. They became as close as sisters over time for they saw each other quite often before. However over time they had lost touch as they were far too busy in their own lives and drama over the course of a month or two. Now that their situations were somewhat relaxed for the both of them, they could finally catch up and continue where they left off.

Sahara approached the door to Ariel’s home and gave the bell a ring. She stood there for a moment, hearing Ariel move around inside. Sahara could see her breath begin to mist in front of her while Ariel drew nearer to the door. Ariel must have had control of her ability however Sahara was prepared to spend the night with Ariel in comfort, bringing her warmest clothing along, making her look a bit odd while making her way here, everyone dressed in their summer clothing while she wore her thickest jacket. She usually did this just to humour Ariel, she knew that her friend could change the temperature around her but it was always good to lightly poke fun at her just as Ariel would’ve poked fun at Sahara for being an oddball, it was all in good fun of course.

As the door opened Sahara let out a small scream of joy and immediately placed her belongings on the floor when she saw Ariel. Reaching out, she gave her a very excited hug. She began to realize how much she forgot how much she missed Ariel.
“OH MY GOSH! I missed you so much! Okay, before you say anything, I brought all the good stuff.” Sahara mumbled as she dug her hug deeper into Ariel before finally letting go and reaching for the paper bag. “Alright, I got some great films and the other goodies that we wanted.” She picked up the bag and looked at Ariel again with an extremely joyful smile.

Everything had changed… Ariel knew that much, but what exactly it was changing to she didn’t know and the mere thought of it scared her so much, that she didn’t feel like heading outside of her door. Which was why the blue mutant simply pushed the dark thoughts away and kept going like she had always done; she got up, went to work, did her thing there, headed home, talked to her cousin over skype, mailed some of her friends or texted them, waited to see if Anansi showed up that night or not, went to bed and repeated the cycle.

She focused on what she had to do, instead of what she would do in situations that she couldn’t possibly predict and this way of living had in a way isolated her from her friends. She hadn’t really seen any of them in a while and she hadn’t really noticed how much she missed being her social self until she had received a text earlier that day from her colleague and close friend Sahara. The scientist had asked if she was busy that night and knowing that Anansi was doing something Morlock related that night, the girl had quickly, without asking why answered that her friend was to be there with their usual junk at 7.30.

Taking a shower, putting on her pajama joking shorts and a sports bra, Ariel looked into the mirror while she cleansed her face; her hair up in hair band. If you had asked her, she’d tell you she looked like a monster, but when asking Anansi, she looked like a natural and cozy beauty. The redhead smiled at that thought and sighed happily. The world was coming to an end, but at least her relationship brightened up everything and was going great. So great in fact that she had told her family about him and they were all excited to meet him some day… some day being the key word.

Ariel had applied to become an American citizen, had taken the test and had passed. She was no longer Danish in other ways than her heritage. She didn’t have a Danish passport any longer. And her family and she knew that it meant she’d stay in the USA forever and maybe visit once every second year or something like that. It had been her wish. There was nothing left for her in Denmark. She had changed. Even her accent was only audible once in a while or when she was really sleepy or drunk.

The bell sounded and she dropped everything she had in her hands and rushed out of the bathroom. Sahara was here! The excitement filled Ariel and she fought hard not to run to the door, but walking there slowly to build up the suspense. She slowly opened the door and grinned widely, until a shocking sight hit her. She didn’t have time to say anything because her friend screamed joyfully and jumped in to hug her. Ariel hugged back tightly and planted an innocent kiss, which she knew always made Sahara blush – oh how she loved to tease that girl and looked at her. “To tell with the junk! What happened to your hair!?” she asked and stepped aside to let her friend in before closing the door.

“Don’t get me wrong, it suits you and you look… amazing, but what happened to you hair!? Haven’t you learned by now that we don’t make enormous life changing decisions, without consulting each other?” She grinned, knowing Sahara almost blew up when she found out that Ariel was taking a citizen exam, without inviting her to be there when she ‘graduated’. It had been nice having a friend stand outside the door with balloons and flags. She took the bag and fetched the ice creams and movies out of it. “Cookies and cream! You know me too well!” she said and skipped into the kitchen to get the spoons.

She sat down on the floor with her back against the couch, placed in front of the tv – which was their usual ice cream spot and opened the ice cream buckets. “So tell me all about the hair!” She said and grinned widely, “Now that you have new hair, can we go get you a new wardrobe too? Oh I know this awesome chic place with kind of gothic slash popish look, that would suit you so well!” she said and stuffed a spoonful of ice cream into her mouth. “Oh! Have you noticed I’ve started training? I’m telling you, my muscles have been aching the past few weeks, but now it doesn’t really hurt that much.”

“You know, if we get you a whole new wardrobe, we can go out and get your some manmeat! I can be your wingwoman!” She gasped and clapped her hands, “Oh say yes, Sahara! It’d be so amazingly fun!”

It didn’t take very long for Sahara to get comfortable in Ariel’s apartment. She was already undressing and changing into her pj’s right there in the living room when Ariel went to go prepare the snacks that Sahara Brought along.

“You really think so?” Sahara fiddled with her shortened locks as she blushed. “Yeah I know, I was going to tell you about it but it all happened so fast that it was just as big of a surprise for me as it was for you.” Sahara reached into the brown paper bag and fished out some bubbly champagne.

“Speaking about life changing decisions, congrats on the passing of your exam!” With that Sahara popped out the champagne and poured it into the two glasses while they both went towards the living room with all their preparations. Sahara took a gulp of her champagne and scooped some of the sweet and cold goodness from her bucket into her mouth as she comfortably dug herself into the couch. The mixture of the two tastes somehow was heavenly when it swirled in her mouth.

“Okay, there’s a weird story about my hair, after I got into a bit of a mishap at this one bar while helping this investigator with a case, I made a new friend and she practically made me do it. I didn’t really try to resist, it was fun anyway.” She took another scoop of her ice-cream. “Anyway, we can’t do the changing of clothes. I am not getting a lot of cash in, with the workplace being a little demolished and in for repairs. So I am just waiting at home for now maybe doing other jobs on the side.”

“Also, now that you mention it, you do look fit.” Sahara proceeded to poke and prod Ariel with one hand and still sipping her drink with the other. “I would never do much working out; I am more of an only move when necessary, have you seen my rolley chair in my office? It’s there for a reason.” Sahara chuckled into her bucket of ice-cream; she sat on the couch cross-legged and revelling in the cookies and cream.

“You know, if we get you a whole new wardrobe, we can go out and get your some manmeat! I can be your wingwoman!” She gasped and clapped her hands, “Oh say yes, Sahara! It’d be so amazingly fun!”

Sahara spewed her drink over immediately when Ariel said this. She couldn’t help but burst in uncontrollable laughter at the thought of dating someone right now. Quieting down for a moment she replied, “Manmeat... well can’t say that is necessary right now maybe later. Not like there are any good ones on the market.” Sahara surveyed Ariel’s apartment and caught the site of a pair of male boxers. This meant that Ariel was hoarding a new man friend or that she was into a more free clothing style. “ So, speaking about ‘manmeat’ what is this...” Sahara stood up and picked up the male’s boxers and looked at Ariel with a devilish look. In a teasing and playful tone, “Haven’t you learned by now that we don’t make enormous life changing decisions, without consulting each other?” She grinned and took another sip of her drink, leaving a small amount left.

Ariel grinned and took the glass taking a big gulp ”Yeah I think so. When have I ever lied to you? Well… other than the time where I told you I totally didn’t eat the last bit of ice cream…” she chuckled and leaned her arm on the couch and rested her head, looking up at her friend. “And you were there when I passed it, dork. Why are we celebrating again?” she asked finishing her glass with a second gulp. “Not that I mind. You know I love our bubbles.”

She took another big scoop of ice cream and enjoyed the taste of champagne and cookies and cream on her tongue while Sahara explained the hair. After listening to it, she frowned and pointed at her with the spoon. “Hold on. You went on a mission, without me… and you got a friend? Am I supposed to be jealous and feel threatened? Do I have to find that girl and go all ‘male possessive’?” she burst out laughing, not capable of holding the mask.

“And we can totally do the wardrobe thing! It’s not that expensive and you can owe me? It’d be so much fun. Come oooon.” She begged and placed her head on Sahara’s knee giving her the puppy dog eyes, “Pwetty pweaaase.”

She laughed as she felt ticklish when she was poked, “You should tag along. It’s not that hard to work out and come on… It’d make me feel better if I knew you were capable of running more than five meters, if anyone should attack.” She said and winked playfully. Yes, Ariel was joking, but she was also a bit serious. She was very worried for Sahara; she would be defenseless if anything happened, like it had a small time ago and she was there.

Ariel jumped away a little when suddenly a bit of champagne was sprayed out from the scientist’s mouth, “Yes, manmeat…” she laughed and wiggled her eyebrows. “Oh come on! Don’t be so picky! You need a good fuck. Who said anything about a relationship?” Once again the blue mutant started laughing again and shook her head, “Man… I’d pay to see you have a one night stand.”

She followed her friend with her eyes in curiosity and blushed a bright purple when she saw her friend hold the boxers that she had bought for Anansi, which he had forgotten there. “Uhm…” She looked down at her hands “I am surprised I never told you… Those belong to my boyfriend. We’ve been together since before you and I became friends, actually. His name is Christian, he’s a spider mutant and… well, I think he might be the love of my life. Though it’s a bit too early to tell. We’ve only been dating for four months…”

“I just felt that we should just celebrate...again. The first occasion didn’t seem very festive, you know ‘cause we had to cancel halfway through for work and other things”. Sahara gave a playful smirk. “...and like you said, I know you love your bubbles.”

Sahara chuckled at Ariel’s remark about the whole hair situation; she could barely take Ariel seriously if she was trying to be mad. She gave small bouts of laughter till Ariel begged to assist in the changing of her wardrobe. “Nope, no wardrobe change, I like, my clothes. I am happy with it... maybe I am... okay maybe I’m not happy...yeah I am not happy.”Sahara stood there, listening to things about manmeat “C’mon, I don’t need that, I don’t want to sleep with any guy off the street, think of the diseases they could be carrying, or worse, they could want a relationship from me!” Sahara acted and responded so loud and seriously that she paused for a moment and looked at the expression on Ariel’s face, causing her to snort through her nose with a laugh. “Besides, I’d doubt there would be a guy that would be into me, I think some or even most guys don’t really like a girl with a brain and also listens to ‘Metallica’ at 5.00 am.”

Sahara looked back to the boxers that she held. “About your business with man meat, I feel you need to speak a little more about this”She dangled the delicates before dropping them to the floor and trotted towards the couch with her glass for a refill. She picked up the bubbly bottle and continued “I have been left in the dark about your small adventure with your boyfriend whom I’ve never met, and will meet soon right?” Sahara gave a questioning but also teasing look as swung the bottle around and folding her legs back onto the couch to get a little more comfortable.

Ariel gave her friend a grateful smile and poured more champagne into her glass, “Well, let’s toast then! For us; the sexiest women at Horizon Labs – a crazy scientist and an ice princess! May our lives be filled with wonderful challenges, amazing opportunities and many more nights like these.” She grinned, clinked her glass gently against Sahara’s and took a large gulp.

She took another spoonful of ice cream, “See? You’re not happy. Look, I know you! I know you love to be different and that you like your alternative style, but it’s so outdated for you. We need to get you another alternative funky style. Something pop’ish mixed with a dash of goth, a hint of punk and a sprinkle of hipster! Oh please, Hara! It would be so awesome. And I bet you’d be happy.” She pushed on knowing she might get her way if she kept going.

“Oh man… a relationship?” she wrinkled her nose “Yuck! Who needs that? All I know is, you’d be happy with the attention. Doesn’t mean you have to do anything ‘bout it. Come on, smukke. I’m tired of being the one stared at when we go out! Take this burden off of my shoulders! Let’s show the world what a hottie batottie you really are!”

She snorted and sent a glare “I’m not too fond about the loud music at 5 am. Doesn’t mean I don’t accept it about you, right?”

Ariel sighed and leaned against the couch “Fiiiiine! I’ll tell you all about my man business.” She agreed and threw a gummibear from the table at Sahara, “He caught me when I fell out of my window in my old apartment. He spent the night – nothing happened. And we just started hanging out together and go on dates, you know? Then the 14’th of January… we hadn’t seen each other for a little while because of something that happened to the Morlo- his family… and I was busy with the whole New Years disaster… so we bumped into each other… went for a cup of coffee… caught up… and he asked me to be his girlfriend.”

She explained and smiled to herself when she remembered the day, “We’ve been together for four months now… and we love each other.” She looked up at Sahara and grinned, “On our first month anniversary, we went on a date… you know… it was Valentines Day… And he went home with me and we got a little freaky. It was absolutely amazing! I was a little scared that his mutation had… you know… affected his penis, but nope. He was totally human down there and I can honestly say that he’s turning me into a better woman. I used to care about looks… but when I see him, I only see who he is, not how he looks. “

Ariel got up and went over to her desk where her computer was standing and took a picture frame, “We took this picture together on our second month anniversary.” She said and showed Sahara a picture of him holding her with all six of his arms and kissing her cheek. “I didn’t really believe in love… but now I do. He has made sure of that.”

Sahara clinked her glass against Ariel’s, realizing it’s nearly empty she set it down, and poured another bit of champagne into it. “Okay look hun, I will consider changing some of my clothes, and I am not going to look like one of those moronic tweens that prance around in those ridiculously short things.” Sahara said firmly but with a smile behind it. She did enjoy her originality and wouldn’t want to entirely change it. It was indeed time for something new and refreshing but not a complete makeover.

“Maybe we can go out to a bar, maybe I’ll meet a nice guy, and I still won’t sleep with him. You of all people know I don’t really want to do anything insane with a guy. I am really not that type.” Sahara reminded herself that she was inside for most of her life, studying in her room or a library. She was in fact rarely social with anyone who did not circle the same areas she had. Elementary school didn’t last very long for her, neither did high school to meet a guy. She pretty much attacked through the work in college. If a guy even tried to make contact her, they would not even be able to fit much of a word in while she was busy. Ariel would seemingly be the one opening Sahara to a more social lifestyle.

Sahara listened to Ariel’s touching story of her boyfriend, she wasn’t bothered in the slightest that he was half spider; she found it rather awesome that he was half spider. Sure it would be weird to make out with him but she supposed if he was as good as Ariel said. Why should it be an issue? “That is so sweet”, Sahara squealed as she held the picture and looked at the cute couple. Sahara smacked Ariel semi-lightly on the arm, “You jerk, why didn’t you want me to meet him sooner?” She looked back at the picture, “Damn, we should totally pay him a visit. Where does he live exactly?” Sahara scanned over his face, “Does he have any cool spider powers, does he climb on walls or shoot web or have a venom thing going on?” Sahara looked at Ariel with curiosity and excitement whilst saying this and at the same time directing her attention to Ariel’s glass and motioned to refill her glass for her, without confirmation she proceeded to carry out the task without allowing Ariel to even answer her series of questions.

Sahara got up off the couch while speaking and headed for the brown paper bag, she grabbed the movies and spread it over the coffee table so they could have their pick. “Oh, and when we’re done speaking about you and Romeo, we should get to watching these, the video store gave me a discount today.” She sat back into the couch and took a deep sigh, “Wow, okay, no seriously, I can’t believe this, if I had a boyfriend I would totally let you know.” .Sahara thought for a moment, was she overly picky? Was she too harsh on the general male population, thinking that most of their decisions were made via genitals; she should probably lighten up a bit about it. “Is he like an ass though? I mean sure he is a great guy but does he act like a douche?”

Ariel raised her hands in victory, ”Yes! I get to help my nerdy friend to become the hot, original, nerdy friend!” she said excited and smiled at her. Ariel knew very well that Sahara liked to be unique. She knew that the girl was rather antisocial, heck sometimes Ariel believed that her friend was more scared of the world than just antisocial. But it wasn’t something she said out loud, just simply tried to help the scientist to see that it wasn’t as bad as you’d think.

But it was rather hard showing someone just that, when all hell had broken lose with the whole ‘kill your heroes’ shit that was going on and whatnot.
“I’m not saying you have to do anything with a guy. But flirting, going on a date or two, without it being serious can be fun. And I’d really like to hear you describe insane. I tell you about how I froze the eye of the big giant water monster from the depths of the oceans and you light up like I’m talking about this awesome chocolate fudge.” She grinned and winked.

Ariel raised an eyebrow as she was smacked and shrugged, “He has a lot of spider powers. He has six arms. He has a whole lot of eyes – it can be difficult to see which eyes he’s using at which time, but I’ve gotten the hang of it now. He has small hair all over, where you normally have hair. You know, arms, face, legs, chest. He can climb wall and he’s super strong. I’ve never asked him about the web, though I really should… He has venom… Oh and he has super reflexes.” She smirked a bit, “Having sex on the ceiling is an experience that I can only recommend.”

Ariel started fiddling a bit with her glass and sipped a whole lot, “Look… Sahara… I haven’t told anyone about him… I’ve told Lucy and he was at my birthday party… but… I don’t want people to know, because I want to protect him and his family. With all the things going on and my big mouth, you know I can easily get enemies. I don’t care if they go after me – you know that much… But if they went after him or you… my family… I couldn’t bear it.” She explained herself and gave her friend an apologetic smile. “And we can’t really visit him. He lives… well, let’s just say I haven’t even really seen where he lives. He has never taken me there. We’re usually here. I can’t tell you too much about it, because there’s more than just him involved and I don’t want to out them.”

She sat down and looked at the movies, “I wanted to tell you. I really did. But I guess the opportunity just never really opened. And you better tell me, because I have to do the whole interrogation on the B to the F of yours, when you get one.” She winked before picking up a movie. “Dead Silence, eh? Hmm… A widower returns to his hometown to search for answers to his wife's murder, which may be linked to the ghost of a murdered ventriloquist. That doesn’t sound so scary, does it?”

She looked at the pile and took another one up “ A Nightmare on Elm Street Now here’s a movie that sounds scary. Listen to this; A re-imagining of the horror icon Freddy Krueger, a serial-killer who wields a glove with four blades embedded in the fingers and kills people in their dreams, resulting in their real death in reality. Imagine if a mutant had that kind of power? Ugh! No thank you! I’d rather have my dreams untouched!”

She took another one up, “Ah. Here’s a classic. The Blair Witch Project. We’ve watched this one once too many.” She grinned. “What do you want to watch?”

“I guess let’s go for The Blair Witch project., I just rented these for a pretty good discount so I won’t be surprised if some of them are scratched.” Sahara frowned while making the decision. “Also I just think if Freddy Krueger went into your, he’d just see your Romeo.” Sahara teased.

She got up from the couch and made a quick clean of the area, picking up the boxers from the floor and tossing it into the hamper, in the bathroom. Glancing at the mirror in the bathroom gave her a chance to see how she looked; she actually couldn’t recognize herself for a second. Her mother would have a small fit to see that all her lovely thick hair had been shortened, however she would’ve approved of the color change, a lot of people did. She had been getting more looks lately however this made her more socially anxious than usual, she loved being nice to people but had recently become a little more cautious than afraid of who she spoke to. The whole ‘Killyourheroes’ ordeal made her weary.

“Alright...” Sahara said with a disappointed sigh, she respected Ariel’s response. Sahara placed a hair found on Anansi’s boxers, she always liked to keep information on people, sometimes she was asked to update several databases with information of mutants and Anansi would probably require an update and profile in her database, one could only get so much information from a single hair.

It was killing Sahara inside to find out where Ariel’s boyfriend lived and why they couldn’t meet at his place actually once Sahara could get home she would access old security camera logs and other data files to see any information regarding a spider mutant, also trying to track his location to an extent but Ariel would fit if she found out. Sahara was also aware that Ariel knew that she could find most people who weren’t trying to conceal a lot; the last case Sahara worked on was proof of that.

Ariel knew a lot about Sahara’s profound skills in hacking and investigation via networks, computers and a variety of other devices and would trust her friend to not get into it to find out information of her boyfriend, at least this is what Sahara assumed and it would eat her up inside if she went for the guilty road, so she had to refrain.

Sahara walked into the kitchen and heard the movie’s line of trailers begin. “Want some popcorn!?” She pulled popcorn out of the microwave, noshing into a handful. She quickly trotted over to Ariel and snuggled in next to her with her bowl, offering it to Ariel as well.

Ariel smiled ”If Freddy Krueger tried to go after Christian, he’d have a reason to be afraid himself. I don’t take too nicely to people going after those I love.” She went over to the tv and popped in The Blair Witch Project. “You know we’re gonna shit bricks, now.” She chuckled.

Ariel would be lying to the world if she said she couldn’t suspect Sahara of looking up information about Anansi, but she quickly shook such thoughts out of her head. Sahara was her friend and she’d never do anything to betray that kind of trust. She looked at her friend and gave her a grateful glance, “Thanks for accepting my wish. I promise you’ll meet him, soon.”

She sat down in the couch and thought for a moment “He may even let you test him, if you ask politely. Maybe. He just doesn’t want to feel like some experiment, you know? It’s kinda like me. I’ll gladly let you test my body and powers, as long as you treat me like a person and not one of those labrats.”

She watched as Sahara headed out into the kitchen, “Yeah! And bring in the bottle of cosmopolitan in the fridge!”

When Sahara came in again, she snuggled into her and took a handful of the popcorn enjoying herself and feeling at ease and safe.

“Meh, I don’t know. I don’t really get that scared of junk like this but hell, might as well.” The beginning credits rolled in and the scene began to set. Sahara already thought the film was pretty lame, probably more to play on the mind than being gory, she enjoyed a good gore film; she should’ve went for Nightmare on Elm Street. The movie played on, slowly getting creepier by the minute as greater and random occurrences happened all through.

It was completely dark outside now; the moon was in its third quarter. Apartment lights began to switch off by now, only a few remaining lit in the street aside from the street lamps. Ariel’s apartment flickered with pale lighting that came from the television and the stale background music of the horror film caused an ambiance of paranoia. Sahara shifted along the couch and placed her arm along the couch, using it as a support to hold her head whilst watching the film. During some points of the film, it became awfully annoying as to how it didn’t make much logical sense at some points, causing Sahara to burst out in a few fits of irritation towards the film’s plot line. She had to be calmed down and finally be convinced it’s just a movie. Sahara did begin to feel the effects of fear as the movie continued, nearing the end.

A rustling occurred outside the window of Ariel’s apartment, a small intruder decided to venture inside through a small opening in the window. It stalked behind furniture and hopped onto a table without the girls noticing. It explored each room and different dark spaces where dust had collected. Eventually it came back to the living room and hopped onto the dresser, sliding behind the different trinkets placed neatly along it. It bumped an antique glass vase accidently, the vase shook along the dresser and swayed left to right, competing with gravity before it fell to the wrong end, falling over the edge and finally colliding into the floor. It shattered into hundreds of pieces and without sparking a sound either. The animal freaked out and screeched in horror of not knowing what was going on.

Sahara jumped off her seat, completely freaked out with a scream from the random noises, especially after watching the film. She darted for one of the room and picked up the side table lamp for defense of whatever was intruding the room, the plug was removed from the wall in her yanking of the light.

"What the hell was that!" Sahara screamed. The animal jumped around the room, from the desk, to the kitchen counter and towards Ariel. It looked terrifying behind all the fear and paranoia that they had just gathered from the film.

The room was still completely dark, and little light had entered the room, except from the television that was now showing its long list of end credits. Sahara frantically looked around and the room suddenly felt colder. The intruder slowed in its movement and eventually stopped completely, it’s groaning and hissing stopping entirely. Sahara looked at the poor animal, as it was completely frozen solid. It looked like a cat, judging from the silhouette that was encased within the ice. It was apparent that Ariel had frozen the cat right before Sahara’s eyes.

"Holy shit Ariel! You froze a fucking cat!" Sahara said wide-eyed.

Ariel wasn’t the most logical person; she was very passionate despite her cold powers and features. As she watched the movie, she was too sucked in to notice any of Sahara’s annoyed and irritated outbursts. She was scared, she getting paranoid and the flickering light didn’t help. She didn’t notice anything around her other than the movie and she was biting her hair wide eyed and felt her heart was speeding.

She was so distracted that she didn’t notice the intruder, but she did feel the presence of something that wasn’t supposed to be there and it sent what would have been chills, down her spin and she flicked her eyes a bit around the room, feeling more paranoid than ever.
Had Anansi been there, she’d have felt more at ease as they were two mutants that could protect themselves and fight whatever came around, but Sahara couldn’t do that.

Then she heard the shattering of her vase and she jumped up and turned towards the noise. Something was moving towards her. It was dark, she couldn’t see what it was, it seemed bigger than anything natural and louder. Fear overtook her and her hands started to glow with mist and her eyes turned completely blue as she used her powers. A wave of frost that was approximately -28 degrees shot from her and hit the creature that froze in the midst of a jump and fell solid to the ground.

She screamed and jumped backwards hitting her table and sat down flat on it. “What the hell was that!?” she asked and grabbed her left chest as she felt the adrenaline pump through her.

"Holy shit Ariel! You froze a fucking cat!"

Ariel widened her eyes and looked from Sahara to the creature and as her eyes got more used to the darkness in the room, she realized that it indeed was a very dead and frozen cat that laid on her floor.
“Oh fuck!” she burst out and got up raising towards it. “Oh no, no, no, no, no! I killed it!” She lifted it by its tail and showed Sahara that it was solid.

If it hadn’t been for how tragic and horrible this was, the girl would have laughed from the situation. Maybe they’d laugh at this some day, but right now panic gripped her. “We gotta get rid of it! Get rid of the evidence!” she said and looked around before tossing it to Sahara. “You do it!”

“We gotta get rid of it! Get rid of the evidence!” Ariel said and looked around before tossing it to Sahara. “You do it!”she shouted when she tossed the frozen feline carcass to Sahara.

“I’m a scientist not an undertaker for the mafia!” cried Sahara before the cat left Ariel’s hands.

Sahara was not prepared for this, not only did she suck at sports in school, but she also was a butter fingers, add that with a frozen cat to catch and you have a messy outcome. It was if it went all so fast. Ariel tossed it into the air, it flew quite gracefully, and one could think that you heard ‘Ave Maria’ playing in the background as it drifted to Sahara. The sight was a spectacle indeed. It flew to Sahara, smacking it with one hand to the other several times before gravity finally decided to end it. Much like the vase, the cat came crashing down, breaking into several pieces because Sahara had horrid hand to eye co-ordination.

Sahara looked down at the different pieces of iced cat all over the flood, what had she done? Actually what had Ariel done!? “Oh shit!” , cried Sahara throwing her hands into the air before bending down to pick up the cats name tag. A tear rolled down her cheek, from fear and also from a little bit of sadness. “It’s name was Allejandro, who names a cat Allejandro and worst of all, who lets their cat out to wander in to people’s homes?!” she questioned with a lump in her throat. Sure it was ridiculous to get all welled up about something like this, but it was the shock and paranoia that led to unnecessary consequences.

“Okay, considering we can’t really return the cat in pieces, we’re going to have to get rid of it now.” Sahara stated, calming down a bit. Sahara stepped over the cat remains and left to the kitchen to get a plastic rubbish bag. She couldn’t help but giggle a bit in the kitchen before coming back, thinking about the over-reaction. She still felt scared though, that film did not leave a very good impression on her.

Ariel watched with open mouth as the cat was tossed from hand to hand as Sahara seemed to have absolutely no control over the situation and even before it happened she knew what was to come. She closed her eyes and heard the crash on the floor and she opened them again to see a shattered, dead, frozen cat all over. “Oh my God, Sahara! You broke the frozen dead cat!” she said and felt a strange urge to burst into laughter.

Ariel walked over to Sahara and looked at the name tag, “Let’s hope it was someone who never really wanted the cat and treated it horribly…” she said and tried to push the image of an old lady sitting by her window and worrying about old Allejandro or a small boy crying at night because Allejandro didn’t come home.

She stood up straight and walked over to close her window – which she always had open in case Anansi crawled by. “Okay… where do we get rid of it? It will defrost in approximately 7 hours and with the warmth tomorrow, it will stink gruesomely.” Ariel felt like a villain. Like she was trying to cover up a murder. This was a total ‘I know what you did last summer’ moment and she widened her eyes, “What if the cat comes back to haunt us and kill us?” she asked and quickly stepped away from the frozen bits.

“I can’t believe it worked though… I can freeze blood!” Ariel stated and made a small victory dance, “My powers are evooooolving. My powers are evooooolving!” she sang as she booked a bit. She then stopped and cleared her throat, “Sorry… not the time and place to celebrate anything.”

“That’s great Ariel, but let’s just get rid of this poor thing.” Sahara gestured to the floor with a dustpan, brush and bag. She got down to her knees and started sweeping up frozen cat remains. She was not expecting to have to clean, especially at someone else’s house. “I think the best place is in a dumpster, lots of things die in dumpsters so hopefully that will cover the soon to be awful smell.

The sweeping was done in a few minutes and the remains were placed inside the black bag. Sahara placed the bag by the door and got her slippers. “Okay luckily it’s not too cold outside, well not a problem.” ,mentioned Sahara. “So let’s just get going, I don’t want to be seen with a dead cat while we walk through the building.” Just as Sahara picked up the bag and opened the door, everything went completely dark. From the corner of her eye Sahara could see small strips of light coming through the window of the moon. After some quick analysis it was quite obvious, “Oh great, the power is cut.” Sahara said with exasperation. She walked to the window, the only source of light in the room and peered outside. “It looks like the whole block has been cut, and where did everyone go?” .

Sahara felt a shiver go down her spine, realizing that they would have to walk around the quite neighbourhood to find a dumpster to get rid of damn cat. “Are you sure we can’t do this when it’s a little brighter, I mean you could just freeze it again if it melts.” Sahara questioned as she turned around, trying to find her friend’s silhouette in the dark. “Where the hell are you, are you even there?” Sahara said waving her hand around in the dark as her eyes haven’t completely adjusted to the dark yet.
