After Not This Time

Her head was pounding. She slowly opened her eyes only to shut them immediately to shield against the blinding light shining right in her face. She tried again, this time opening them slowly to get adjusted to the brightness. “I would love it if you turned off the high beams, whoever the heck you are.” Jubilation tried to move her arms, but found them to be bound behind her back as she sat in an old, wooden chair. No problem, she could just burn her way through the rope. “What the?” She tried, but for some reason her powers wouldn’t activate. That’s when it hit her. That prick she felt in the neck earlier must have been a nullification dart or something. Jubilee groaned thoroughly frustrated with the universe. It truly was some big cosmic joke being played on her, a very unfunny one at that.

How many times now had she been kidnapped? The woman had lost count by now. Did she do something really terrible in a past life or something? This was ridiculous. Her whole life was big, jumbled up mess of pain and inconvenience. The death of her parents thanks to the betrayal of a friend, being snatched up and tortured by little green men, having people on her team not trust or even come close to respecting her for one reason or another. It was enough to make a woman wonder just why the hell she kept on trying to do good. Maybe everyone would be better off without her around. Yea, just maybe. Jubilation sighed heavily as she waited for the bastards that took her to make their presence known. “Come on enough with the theatrics, man. Just tell me why I’m here, your big plan, yadda, yadda, yadda.” She’d been around the block enough times to know how it all went down. “If you’re gonna kill me just get it over with. I don’t want to be sitting here on this splintery chair all damn day or night, whatever time it is.”

Craig had done good; not only had he done his job, he'd done more than that and caught one of the X-Factor people. The Asian one who'd thought it smarter to stay separate from the group. He'd gotten a nice payday for that catch, and because of his little injury in the line of duty, he could to spend that cash on a vacation. In a way, Zebediah couldn't fault the girls way of thinking, but it was one of those situations where you were set up to lose from the beginning regardless of what choices you made.

So something bad would have happened to her regardless he thought, just that getting captured by him was far less lethal than say running into one of the machine gun emplacements. He was eating a light lunch when the girl finally woke up. They had the floodlights on full blast, and he enjoyed it a little too much when she couldn't even keep her eyes open.

She said she wanted him to turn off the lights, which clearly wasn't happening. "Well see, we could do that. But we won't since...well you're clearly in no position to make orders or even suggestions for that matter." Even though she couldn't see him or his men, they could see her clearly, and he saw her flexing her fingers trying to use her little firework explosions.

"Oh yeah. Your powers no longer work, Jubilation was it? That's a dumb name; I can see why you just go by Jubilee." He chuckled and let her finish complaining. Saying that she'd rather he just tell her his plan or kill her and get it over with. "See, I already told your friends, Alix and Jamie in particular.

That this isn't some cheesy movie where the villain tells you all his plans simply because he's assured they're beyond failure. Now, even though I personally know that to be true. It doesn't mean I'm just gonna tell you what I'm planning."

He finished the last bite of his food and stepped in front of the light, casting a silhouette that showed the shape of his body, but no details beyond that. "And about killing you, well...I don't have a reason to, yet.

On the contrary, you'd be very useful to me. So I'll be keeping you around for a while. You may even find a better purpose here with me than back with XFI. Not like they ever trusted you to do anything back there, amiright?"

She wanted to jump up out of the chair, charge forward and lay the smackdown on the bastard. “Obviously,” she said in regards to her powers no longer working. Naturally she wondered just how long that null dart was going to last. She figured that it wasn’t going to wear off anytime soon otherwise this guy and all of his men would be in for a world of hurt. Many people loved to underestimate her abilities. Pretty fireworks were the least that she could produce. She had blown holes through metal on plenty of occasions. Now imagine what that kind of power would do to the human body. Jubilation often times held back when she was in a combat situation because, despite being forced to do so in the past, she was not a killer. She reached up to see if her fingers could touch the knot that held her hands in place. Damn, no luck.

It irked her when he called her name dumb. It wasn’t a traditional name which was what she liked about it. “What can I say? I was the best thing that happened to my parents.” She missed them everyday. As he spoke she went about looking around the floor for something close and sharp that could be used to cut herself free. Still no luck. The floor was smooth and level. “Ah well, can’t blame a girl for trying. You egotistical crapbags love to run your mouths so I thought I’d give it a shot.” She smiled coyly even though she still couldn’t see the guy. Jubilation was aware that it was the same bastard that the team had been after earlier due to the voice and manner of speech. She was a little relieved when he stepped into the light inadvertently keeping the majority of it out of her face.

“How about I give you one?” She jerked forward in the chair while trying to pry her arms free, but they stayed in place. She growled. What he said next actually made her think for a moment. How the hell was this guy so knowledgeable about XFI, specifically her? “What purpose would I have associating with a guy like you, huh? The way I see it only thing that’ll get me is an express ticket to Hell in the seat next to yours. Thanks, but no thanks buddy.” She didn’t want to think about how things were back at headquarters, but dammit she couldn’t help it. She was the kid, the sidekick, the one nobody really respected when it came down to it. Not only that, but because of that one time she lost control of her powers through no fault of her own she was the butt of jokes. That damn skrull imposter only made it worst what with her parading around destroying things under the guise of Jubilation’s head injury that caused the real malfunction.

Honestly, she was just tired of dealing, but didn’t want to give this bastard the satisfaction of knowing how easily she could be broken.
