July 28th Mutant Town 6:40pm ----------- If nothing else, the denizens of Mutant Town were unflinchingly resilient. Despite the atrocities committed, and the terrorism running rampant, they refused to cowtow to the mad whims of a select few. And, if nothing else, the sense of community and belonging that began to solidify on the streets of Mutant Town was becoming a movement in it of itself. The experiences they survived, though traumatic, served only to bring them closer to their neighbors and friends. It tied them together via a string of shared experiences and pride. It made it so everyday they survived without incident, they were truly grateful and happy, and made them appreciate the good times for what they really were. Which was probably why Mutant Town organized an unofficial ‘Rock the Block’ party for the afternoon. It was a grassroots community effort; just a collection of a bunch of people, a ginormous potluck of sorts. Small businesses set up booths to sell their wares at discounted prices. Bright lights, colorful cheery decorations were strewn about. And the music – the very best and brightest was playing through a rather large speaker system, a combination of new Dazzler in addition to whatever else was playing on modern radio. It was a melding of cultures and a coalition of people, all working together to support each other. So when Mel mentioned it’s existence to him, Roberto knew he had to be there. And he knew just who he wanted to bring along. And while it was unfortunate that she decided to bring along the urchin as well, Roberto wasn’t in a position to complain. Empath was as much a mutant as he was, he deserved to enjoy himself as well. Even if he was a right dick. “Aww, cool!” Roberto exclaimed enthusiastically as they wandered into the glorified block party, past a clown who’s trade revolved around blowing up balloon animals then making them fight each other using whatever mutant gift he had. This was exactly his sort of thing; any spectacle, any overstated thing with flair simply called to him. Brimming with excitement and the desire to in everything and anything possible, he led the crew through the crowds, his fingers intertwined with Mel’s as he moved along. "This was a good idea, wasn't it? C'mon, this is cool!" A mutant with three arms offered the quadrant of people lays, which Roberto took with a gracious thanks and a smile. And as he slipped his on, he turned around to bestow the cheap necklace to his other companions too. “Babe,” he called out affectionately, bestowing Melissa with the pink one. “’Mara,” he grinned, anointing her with a red one. “And…other.” He drawled out, less than enthused, as he merely handed Manuel his green lay. |

The block party was in full swing by the time they had arrived. It had started around six and lasted until nine, so it was still early enough for kids to be running around. It was a beautiful evening on top of that. The sun was going down and a strong breeze was coming in that was keeping it cool and removing the usual smell of the city. Melissa was perfectly comfortable in a pair of shorts and a black t-shirt that might have been a little too large, but it was in support of a local mutant rap group called DJ-amz. It was times like these though, looking at Roberto and his two friends, that she felt a little out of place with the X-men types. “I hope this will be fun,” Melissa said, looking over at Amara and Manny as Roberto went to grab some lays. “These kind of things sometimes turn out to be sort of lame, but it is for a good cause...” Mel paused as Roberto returned, fixing her hair so that it was over the lay, and then leaned forward a bit on her tip-toes to place a kiss on his cheek. Grabbing his hand again, almost as if she was more nervous than usual (and she was, being around Roberto's friends and X-men), Mel looked back to continue what she had been saying. “But yea, I think a lot of the proceeds are going to the community and what-not,” Songbird shrugged and then leaned into Roberto, nudging him with her body. She had never done that before. But again, she was acting a bit odd due to being around new folks. “Plus they have funnel cakes... and some carnival games if we get bored. Oh and that's not a carnie, that is Merle from the pizza shop down a block.” Melissa raised a hand to Merle and waved at him and he responded in turn, calling her by name as he greeted her. “Iiiiii eat a lot,” Mel said, leaving it at that. She then looked back to Roberto and Manny, having to look across Roberto in order to see them. “So how long have you two known Roberto? I take it that you are some of his best friends, considering he was pretty quick to say he knew who to invite along with us. Let me just say... you two make a cute couple.” |

The party was predictable. It was....a party and, Manuel was not a partier. Not since that night anyway, not since the last party he went to. Walking through the area, with Amara by his side, he tried to push those thoughts away. He wasn't that person anymore. The boy who pushed those people, the popular kids who tormented him, to kill themselves, didn't exist anymore. He was a man now. He had things under control. He had himself under control, at least for the most part. Besides, this wasn't about him, about his feelings of insecurity. This was about Amara, and the fact that he was finally on a quasi date with her, even if she wasn't so clear on that herself. It didn't help of course that Berto was here, muddying up Empath's plans with his ridiculous and unnecessary presence. Even with his girlfriend there, the X Factor-ite with the strange hair, Manuel knew what was really simmering beneath the surface of Berto's mind. It was the same thing that was always there, the thing that Roberto had in common with Manny, and the reason they disliked each other so much; it was his yearning for Amara. "Yes it's...cool," Manny said sarcastically as Berto bounced around, immature as a child, as he took in the festivities. "I do hope you're enjoying yourself, my dear," Manuel looked to Amara. He was liberal with the pet names, but that was something he always did with Amara. It just felt right. He took the lay from Roberto and matched the man's sneer with one of his own. Though, when Mellissa mistook him and Amara for a couple, a huge smile broke out on the Spainard's face. Let's see how Berto likes that. "You think so?" Manuel asked. "We're not a couple actually, but I always say you have to trust what your eyes tell you." He looked over for Roberto. "And as for how long we've known Roberto. Some days it just feels like forever." |

Amara looked around, clearly joyed at the playful energy that seeped into the streets around them. Things were starting to get more adult but there were remnants of children running around. She was thankful that Manny agreed to go along with her. Though she never understood why, he and Roberto hardly ever got along. But otherwise this would have been quite a great deal more awkward with her as a third wheel. At least if she was abandoned for funner activities, Manny would be there to enjoy this party with her. Robbie stepped away and Mel spoke up expressing her hope that it would be a fun night. "I'm sure it will be great. At the very least spending time together is always enjoyable." He came back and she found it admittedly strage to her to see Roberto interacting in such a way with a girl. He'd been dating Mel for some time now and it was an impressive step. How serious things had gotten for him, probably more than she'd ever seen towards a girlfriend of his. She adjusted the red lay that was now around her neck and smiled up at Robbie, trying hard not to give him too much of a look at his interactions with Manny. She doubted the spaniard would care, but ettiquite existed nonetheless. "Ohh yes. I have had funnel cake before. They are quite good." She looked over at Manny with a broad grin. "I know it has just begun but I am. I hope you are as well. I want you to have fun tonight." Pet names weren't something that she found strange coming from her spaniard friend. Manuel was simply that way with her, and right now especially he was very important to her. There were few that had the ability to work with her through what she'd experienced, that could understand, but he did. Even if in different ways. He was an excellent friend despite what Robbie believed. "Me and Manny? Oh we ---" But Manuel answered the question for her. "I am surprised that Manny does not have a girlfriend of his own. He is a good person." She lightly squeezed the elbow that belonged to the emotion manipulating mutant, giving him a smile. "He is one of my closest friends." Roberto was an interesting subject, really. "It does. I have known Roberto since my first year in the United States. It has been around seven years on average. He was one of the first to speak to me once I was introduced into the classes at Xavier's." |

If Roberto noticed that Melissa was nervous, he didn’t call attention to that fact. He was perfectly willing to indulge in the little assurances that seemed to ground and console her. He stuck close, faithfully at her side, with her hand in his in order to give her strength. In short, he was following all the trappings of a young man in a relationship. And what was strange was that not only did he look not bothered by the old ball-and-chain; he looked happy. Happy that he was there with Melissa, happy to indulge in the little gestures of togetherness and affection. Happy to consider someone else in addition to himself. That was significant growth, when it came to the young man who refused to even entertain the idea of ‘settling down’ not even a year ago. “S’nothing wrong with eating,” He offered in support of the pink-haired girl, offering a grin over to Melissa along with an affectionate squeeze of her fingers. “But, I’m curious. How many of these folks do you actually know? D’you help them all?” Community was a strange thing; and the community of Mutant Town was much more expansive than the one found at Xavier’s. He couldn’t even fathom dealing with everyone all the time. “Yeah. I mean, it’s not the same as sitting in your room, all alone in the dark, but it’ll have to do.” Roberto commented with an edge, looking to Manuel almost competitively. The Brazilian hadn’t even wanted him to come; so he wanted Manuel to know that he wasn’t going to let the Empath ruin what was supposed to be a perfectly good evening with his miserable, curmudgeonly existence. Melissa turned her attention to his friends. He let out a snort of amusement when she assumed that they were his best friends. Well, she was half right. But he doubted airing the truth of his loathing would be taken well by either of the females, so he followed that thinly masked civility he had set the precedence with earlier. “Something like that, Mel. I’ve known them for ages. You know, we all went to school together, and Amara and I are X-Men. Manny here’s…doing something. What is it again, buddy?” Although, the insinuation that Amara and Manuel was a couple struck him like lightning. And for a moment he looked bewildered, taken aback by the mere suggestion, before he found himself lunging to rectify it. “No!” He clarified, softening the decisiveness of the exclamation with a laugh as an afterthought. “No, they’re just friends. Dating in the school’s hard, y’know. Everyone knows you, no privacy, you’re always in each other’s business. It’s not the best policy to dip your pen in company ink, if you know what I mean.” He felt a residual weirdness, an awkwardness lingering even after his hasty cover-up. So he dealt with it the only way he knew how. “Oh look, shiny!” He exclaimed, physically tugging Melissa over by their joint hands towards a novelty booth in order to distract her. It seemed to be one of those pitching challenges, replete with various prizes. Reaching into his pocket, he pulled out a twenty. “Lemme try this.” |

Initially, she thought she had made the right assumption about Amara and Manny being a couple, judging by Manny's large grin. But she was quickly corrected by everyone, leaving her smiling and nodding as they offered up explanations to show that the two of them were not together. Her eyes lingered on Amara for a moment, thinking that the woman talked a bit strange. But maybe that was just her. “Seven years on average, huh,” Mel repeated, nodding. “Well sorry, you two just came together and... yea, my mista-...” She was cut short as Roberto gave her a tug in the opposite direction, pulling her towards some ball throwing game. The game was always fun, but it wasn't enough to satisfy her curiosity about Roberto's hasty answer. For now, she let it drop. It seemed like Roberto wanted it that way. “I wouldn't say that I know everyone,” she said, watching him slap down a twenty. The guy working the stand put a few balls down in front of Roberto and then tipped his hat to Melissa. “Heya Ron. Anyways, not everyone. Just a lot of these folks work around here and I see them as I go out and about around Mutant Town.” While Roberto proceeded to play the game, Melissa turned back towards Manny and Amara. “So what is it that you do exactly Manny?” she asked. “If you aren't an X-man, I mean. I know some people work around the school and stuff. Teach, maybe?” (sorry for the delay) |

What was shaping up between the quintet was less of the double date that Manuel had hoped for. No, being anywhere with Roberto was not high on the emotion manipulating mutant's list of favorite things. But if the double date had Amara by his side, he would have gladly grinned and bore it; especially since watching Berto squirm would have been so much fun. But Berto's girl was too quick to force the point and Manuel had to shoot down the idea of a relationship with Amara point blank. There was no sense in admitting his feelings for Amara here, not right in front of of Berto. Besdies, he knew for a fact (in the way only he could) that Amara didn't feel the same way about him. Sure, there was a warmth there, but if there would had been anything romantic to her attentions, Manuel would have felt them. Amara squeezed his elbow and called Manny her friend. Great, he had been friendzoned. He patted her shoulder and returned the sentiment. But it didn't take long for Roberto to start throwing verbal jabs, picking at Manuel for his position within the team. When Songbird asked, Manuel was ready to spin it to his advantage. "I'm on the Legacy team actually. It's a faction within the school designated for the most promising of the next generation. The younger people need good role models, people who exlemplify what it means to be a successful mutant living in today's social and economic climate." He shot Berto a look. "You see, I came from very humble beginnings; nothing really. I pulled myself up by my boot straps. I didn't have the economic boom that others take for granted." He shot him another look. "All that I am, I made for myself, with no help. And I think the X Men want to show that the younger generation as an example of what can come from hard work and determination. And I am more than happy to assist them, even if that means that, in some people's eyes, it may look like I'm taking a back seat." |

"Robbie." Amara said, her tone hinting of warning. There had always been bad blood between the two men to a degree. A lot of bickering. But she wanted that to change despite all of that. Before she simply accepted it as it was, but now.... she wanted her friends to understand. Maybe she did as well. But right now what she wanted was for the two grown men to behave at least for now, to bury the hatchet so to speak. "You don't need to apologize, really. I would be lucky to date someone like Mann--" Roberto seemed very intent on the fact that the two were not a couple but Amara simply rolled her eyes as within a handful of seconds he was pulling Mel to look at the 'shiny' he'd been so distracted by. His odd behavior wasn't unnoticed. Of course she caught on to it, but there were few things that Roberto didn't speak about. For the most part the guy was an open book, or at the very least he was easy to read. But right now it was a bit different. There was an awkwardness to it that she could only assume Mel contributed to. After all, they'd never really seen him with a serious steady girlfriend the way he was with her. She moved with the sort grouping to the game that Robbie had drawn money for and seemed so excited to play. Amara smiled in amusement at his excitement but she kept close to them. "There are quite a few accomplished X-men that are assisting the younger generation. A few of our friends as well. The Legacy Squad is one that has great strength and promise in it." She guessed Mel would know little of their odd groupings of squads, but Robbie was clearly taking a strike needlessly. |

“What?” Roberto inquired, either oblivious or playing ignorant at Amara’s warning call. Twenty dollars awarded him quite the excessive amount of balls, but it was for the best of causes, and the Brazilian wasn’t exactly strapped for cash. Besides, it gave him something to occupy himself with, something to distract the whirring machinations of his mind and work towards. He tossed a ball into the air, feeling the value of its weight in his palms. He felt the cool breeze caressing his skin. He calculated his target, years and years of advanced combat experience bolstering his trajectory recognition. He wound up and with a confident throw, knocked down 5 of the 9 cans. He frowned, disappointed. Another ball was plucked out of the queue as he made a few mental adjustments, only partially listening to his companions. Manuel’s description of the Legacy Squad was inspired. Naturally, Roberto had nothing against the squad, but due to its only representative in the group, his estimation of its worth at the moment wasn’t very high. He let out a snort, barely audible but derisive, before winding back and tossing the ball to the cans. This time, he successfully scattered the pile, a smug smirk appearing on his features as a result. “Yeah, Manny. I heard you did quite a lot of things before joining us.” Roberto spoke, innocuous on the surface, but his tone hinted that there were more sinister identities hidden within the catchall phrase of ‘things’. “You must be real proud to have come so far. Hey, Mel. Choose one!” He gestured to Melissa to pick out one of the cutesy stuffed animal prizes, excited as always, in an attempt to move the topic of conversation away from his contentious rival. But he still had three more balls open to lob. In a show of good faith, he snatched up the blue one and held it out before Manuel, offering it to the Spaniard with a smile. He could play nice too. The smile never quite met his eyes. They were focused, intense; the look more commonly associated with competition than it was altruism. But then again, the two weren't mutually exclusive with Roberto; so many things were a competition to the boy, so many things an opportunity to prove himself. And Manuel was the Gary to Roberto's Ash - or was it the other way around? “Want to leave your bootstraps be for a while and give it a shot there, Manny?” |

Melissa couldn't help but to notice Amara's tone when she said Roberto's name. She turned her head towards Manny as he began to explain Legacy Squad, but her eyes lingered an extra few seconds on Amara. Her eyes flicked to Manny as he moved on to saying that he came from humble beginnings and he had to earn what he had – unlike some. Mel smiled and nodded, shoving both thumbs in either pocket of her jeans in a casual way. She related to Manuel in that, though he appeared to be more successful at it than she did. “I know just what you mean,” Mel said. “I pretty much came from nothing. And... well, I still don't really have much in terms of possessions or money. But I have made a lot of great friends and landed a great job at XFI. I'm getting some good experience there. More than I ever anticipated, really.” She looked to Amara. “So Legacy Squad is kind of the people that are going to move up to the X-men or something like that? I guess once they like... prove themselves or something. It is kinda like that in XFI, though not so official. I've been working with Guido a lot, getting the hang of this private investigator thing before they send me out to do anything on my own. But really, I almost prefer being with a friend it's real...” Melissa stopped short as Roberto interrupted. He wasn't acting normal. It was like he was trying to distract himself with the game and was barely paying attention to the conversation. In truth, it wasn't all that often that Songbird had the chance to talk to a few X-men, outside of Roberto, so she was enjoying it. But he was acting strange and he interrupted with another jab towards Manny. It wasn't an obvious jab this time at least, but she had been around Roberto enough to know when he wasn't acting normal. As Roberto told her to pick out a stuffed animal, Melissa turned her head towards Amara and Manny and gave them an apologetic smile. Somehow she was the one feeling like she was missing out on something and though it was Roberto acting differently, she was the one feeling awkward in this situation. “Uh... sure,” she said, pointing towards a stuffed dog. “I'll take the little Scooby Doo.” She took the small dog and looked down at it, using it as a distraction in order to think about what was going on here. Why would Roberto invite a guy out here just to poke fun at him? It didn't seem like something he would do. When Roberto offered Manny the ball and took another jab about pulling up his bootstraps to take a throw, Melissa shook her head. “Excuse us just a second,” Mel said, glancing towards Amara and Manny before reaching up and grabbing Roberto by the arm. She gripped his arm and then walked a few steps away, pushing him along with her until she felt like they were out of earshot. She knew that Roberto was competitive and all that, and that time with Shatterstar was cute, but this wasn't cute at all. Melissa then whispered, “What is wrong with you?” |

Manuel's description of the Legacy Squad had just the impact he had desired- and then some. Amara's declaration; that she would be lucky to date someone like him, sent Manny's heart into his throat. It was now, in moments like this, that he was glad his emotions weren't on display the same way everyone else's were. He would have had to hide his face in shame and embarrassment if Amara would have been aware of just how happy the offhanded comment made him. And he knew it was an offhanded comment. He could tell from her emotions, or lack there of. Still, there was warmness there; warmness that could easily be shaped into something more. FOr the briefest of instants, Manuel entertained the idea of doing that, of manipulating Amara's emotions. It would be easy. Emma had showed him how to do that and more. Amara would never know that this twist in her feelings was actually his doing. But no. Manny would know. When you could change the way someone felt, it made their feelings playthings. But Amara was no plaything, and he would not treat her as such. He steadied his heart and cleared his mind just in time to hear Songbird talk about some of the comparisons between she and himself. She seemed nice and, though he didn't care to dig, the sheen he got from her emotions said she was genuine. How could someone like Berto get a girl like her? Manuel shrugged. Perhaps she had self esteem issues. "It seems that we have much in common," Manuel smiled at Berto's girlfriend. "I've heard good things about them, and even got a little help from one of your teammates." He thought of Alix. "Alix is quite lovely, and I'm in her debt." The nice mood was interuppted by ROberto (as all nice things seemed to be). His tone was dismissive. His words were barbed. Manuel had expected nothing less; not after what Amara had said to him. Still, a pinprick of anger spread in the Spainard. He couldn't help it; he let it spread out of him as well. It would be soft, almost unnoticable; but the others might feel it; might become a little angrier themselves-get a bit more frayed. Manuel grabbed the ball from Berto's hand; hiding the sneer he wanted to show and replacing it with a smile. "He's quite funny. Isn't he, ladies?" Manny took the ball; still pulsating with anger. He threw it. He wasn't as coordinated as Berto. His training was not of the physical sort. So the ball wavered in midair and only partially struck its target. It wasn't enough to win a prize, but the man at the station had a change of emotion and offered Manny a prize anyway. What were the chances? "What would you like, Amara?" He asked, hoping she would appreciate the gesture. Songbird pulled Roberto away and Manuel took the chance to be alone with Amara, even for a second. "I don't understand what's going on with him?" Manuel leaned into Amara. "I've tried very hard to get on his good side. Perhaps it's all been in vain. I can't imagine why he dislikes me so much." Except that he's in love with and is a complete bastard, Manny thought to himself. "Oh, there's an eyelash." He leaned in and brushed the stray hair off Amara's cheek. "You look very nice today," he added. "Very nice." |

Mel and Manny carried on a very normal, pleasant conversation about what they had in common and she couldn't help but be happy about that. Manny brought up Alix and she piped in. "I agree. I've met her a couple of times briefly when I would visit Paige. She was quite nice." When Manny took up the challenge from Roberto she knew that it would not go well. Either Roberto would make fun of him for not being as athletic as he had been, or he would make up some reason to be spiteful about the fact that the nice game-master felt bad for the challenge and allowed the Spaniard to pick a prize. When he offered it to her, she looked to him with surprise. "Really?" A bright smile spread over her face and she looked at them briefly. "I'd like the monkey." She glanced over to Mel, eyebrows pulled together for a moment as Mel took Roberto to the side, not really sure what to make of the way her friend was acting. Clearly it was enough for Mel to take notice, nodding politely though knew it wasn't polite to interrupt them. Perhaps she could talk sense into him since Amara clearly could not. And it was enough, clearly, for Manny to speak up about it. "I'm honestly not sure. I mean, I expected him to be competitive but this is the worst that i've seen him." She exhaled, clearly frustrated with how he was acting. Manny brushed the eyelash off of her cheek and she gave a steady smile to Manuel. "Thanks. I am glad you came with me. I'm sorry that it's starting to go badly. If you want we can leave. I don't want to make you do anything you don't want to, and I don't think things will be peaceful." She lifted up the little stuffed monkey and pressed it lightly to her cheek like a little hug. "Too bad cute little stuffed animals can't fix your argument, hmm?" |

The moment that Roberto had been anticipating all along reared it’s ugly head when Manuel only managed to strike down part of his target. Instead of picking himself up and attempting another throw like Roberto had with his first failed attempt, the mutant known as Empath seemed to use his dubious charm to convince the employee at the station to reward him anyway. Immediately, Roberto flushed with anger, aided by the emotion resonating off of the Spaniard already. This was what he meant; this was what Manuel did, and no one knew it better than Roberto. He had been subject to and witness to the tricks of the wily European; he recognized the seemingly innocuous for what it was; a flagrant disregard for agency. He twisted and perverted the emotions of others around him to suit his needs with no regards to how it affected them. He didn’t even consider the money he had just stolen from the charitable organization by unjustly taking his prize – and what was worse, no one else did either. There was a strict moral code of conduct that Roberto adhered to. This divine righteousness, this sense of right and wrong, just and unjust, was the motivation behind his life and his choices. So seeing such a flagrant breach of that line before him was bound to incite the lad, even without the added incendiaries of pride, love, and boyish rivalry. He balled his hands into a tight fist, jaw setting in the most bullish of manners, but before he had his chance to explode at the Spaniard, Melissa took it upon herself to actually physically drag him away from the situation. Once they were out of immediate earshot, she spat out her query. And Roberto was absolutely flabbergasted by the accusatory tone she held; as if he had done anything wrong! He hadn’t, had he? No, no, of course he hadn’t. “Nothing! I didn’t do anything!” Roberto replied defensively, frowning to Melissa. He never did do well with criticism; his initial reaction was to pull his arm out of her hold and cut off all physical contact to the girl, crossing them over his chest. “He’s the one that literally just emotion-fucked that dude into giving him a prize! He’s cheating!” “He’s just an asshole, is all. I hate that she hangs around him. He’s bad news, I know he is!” He looked across the crowd, his eyes fixated on the figures of his two teammates. His lips pursed with distaste at how cozy they were behaving. “She’s going to end up hurt again. And I’m going to have to pick up the freaking pieces.” With a sigh he turned his attention back to Melissa. His jaw was jutted in a manner that said he would not apologize, not to Manuel, but it wasn’t Melissa who he wanted to take out all his pent up rage with. Deflated, he lifted a hand to rub at the back of his neck in an almost sheepish manner. “D’you at least like the doggy?” |

Melissa frowned as Roberto yanked his arm away and seemed to back away from her touch. This wasn't like him at all. He was wanting everyone to come and have a great time while letting her meet some of his close friends, but this was anything but that. Instead he was acting a bit childish, blaming the fact that the guy running the game only gave Manny a prize because he was being manipulated by Manny's powers. But still, she remained a good girlfriend, despite being annoyed, and listened to Roberto complain about Empath. “Look, you just gave the guy twenty bucks. These things probably are barely worth a dollar,” Melissa said, holding up the Scooby Doo. “I think maybe he is getting the better end of the bargain by letting Manny have one too.” Mel stepped in closer to Roberto while crossing her arms over her stomach, too. She was 5'8”, which put her just a couple of inches shorter than Roberto, so she didn't have to strain her neck at all in order to get nose to nose with him and look him in the eye. “I'm just sayin', alright? If he did manipulate the guy, if he didn't, we don't know for sure so let's just chill and have a good time.” Melissa glanced over her shoulder towards Amara and Manny as the two of them spoke about something, and she couldn't help but to notice that Amara seemed pretty comfortable around Manny. She looked back to Roberto, still blocking his way to get back to his friends, and looked him in the eye with a nod. “Okay? Amara seems real sweet and she looks like she trusts him, so that is enough for me,” Mel continued, moving as Roberto did so that she would stay in front of him to look him in the eyes. “She is a big girl and I'm sure as an X-man she can look after herself... you shouldn't have to pick up anything,” she said, attempting to be reassuring about the situation, but perhaps she didn't understand Roberto's point of view on it all. Melissa then reached down to Roberto's hand and took it, giving him a gentle pull back towards Amara and Manny. As she approached Roberto's teammates again, she smiled, looking between them. “Sorry about that, I had something to tell Roberto but I think we might be good now,” she said, glancing over at Roberto as she said it and hoping that he would listen to her. Whatever had gone on between these two she would find out later, but right now, she wanted to have the good time that Roberto had made this out to be in the first place. “So,” Mel said, looking to Manny with a smile. “You like funnel cake?” |

Empathy

"I'm sure," Manuel said as Amara confusedly lamented the way things were going. " I know exactly why he hates me." Anger was coarsing through Manuel now. Apparently, being in control of the emotions of others didn't mean you were always in control of your own. He watched Roberto and Mel talk. It was terse at first, but then the woman softened. Pfft, and Roberto always accussed him of manipulating people. Seemed like Roberto was doing a good enough job of that himself. This wasn't right. How could Manuel get the reputation of being a bad guy and Roberto was knee deep in the squeaky clean brigade when this was happening? He was lying to her. He was stringing this X Factor chick along. He had no intention of being serious with her. How could he, when he was in love with Amara? He dug into Roberto's emotions. There it was; that burning sensation that was always around when Amara came by. He wanted her. He loved her, and sooner or later, this lovely Mel girl would suffer because of that. "Oh I don't think we are good," Manuel said when Mel and Roberto came back over. Anger was still running white hot in his viens. "I mean, we are good. "He took Amara's hand suddenly, even though she had given no indication that she wanted him to. "But you two, I think you've got some rough times ahead." He stepped closer to Roberto. "How could you walk around, prentending to be a man, and do this to people? You are no man. A man would be honest. A man would not intentionally hurt someone as kind and good as her." He pointed to Songbird. "Just because he was afraid to face the truth." He shook his head. "It may not be my business, but it certainly is both of yours." He turned to Amara. "He's in love with you. He always has been. When he started this relationship with that girl, he was. And he still is. THat's why he hates me, Amara; because he's in love with you, and he's jealous that we're...close." |
