Mel and Roberto came back over and she was happy that the XFI girl seemed to be able to calm him down. She herself smiled and offered a pleasant question to Manny... but now that anger finally seemed to get to the other X-man. He stated that things weren't good and then grabbed her hand, causing Amara's eyebrows to pull together in concerned confusion. "Manny..." Why was he telling Roberto and Mel that they'd be having rough times? This.... whatever this was it was not going to be a good thing. He moved towards Roberto and she had to take a few steps with him to not be pulled awkwardly. His words at Roberto were curt, sharp, and accused him of not only being more of a child than a man but of hurting Mel as well. When he turned on her, though, she honestly hadn't been expecting that sort of admission. Something so simple and complicated as 'He's in love with you.' Amara wanted to deny it outright, wanted to state how utterly ridiculous that it was that Robbie could be in love with her. But the words wouldn't reach her lips, wouldn't go past that part of her mind. She looked over at Roberto, after what felt like an eternity but wasn't more than a few minutes. There was part of her that knew that right now, there was no lie in Manny's words. That might not be the only reason for the animosity between the two men, or at least she hoped it wasn't. This.... this wasn't right. None of it. No matter what the situation was between them, between her and Roberto. Between Manuel and Roberto, this fun outing was not the place for it. This was a revelation through spiteful anger between the two men. It was something that wasn't meant to be known right now. Amara pulled her hand back from Manny, clearly not looking happy. "Manny. This ... this was not the time for this." No matter how this situation ended, it would not end well. There was no big gesture of clarification, no loud and adamant denial. And unfortunately it made the odd way that Robbie had been acting tonight make so much more sense. But what was she supposed to say? "I..." She took a short breath in. "I think it would be best if I left. I'm taking Manny with me." She looked over to the other woman, not sure of what was a proper thing to say aside from... "Mel. It was nice to see you again." Her skin brightened to where she would be hard to directly look at and after a moment, from somewhere unseen, pieces of earth came gliding in. One formed underneath Manny's feet and the other under hers. She couldn't shift into her Magma form outside of her uniform without destroying the fabric that currently covered her. If Manny wanted to, he could step out of the cradle hold that the earth held around his feet and stabilized. He wouldn't fall off if he remained, but they would go straight back to the school. |

[ JP with Mel ] Was it okay? Well, it’d have to be. Roberto wasn’t pleased with the situation, and he wasn’t happy with how things threatened to pan out, but what could he do? He wasn’t willing to abort the outing, nor did he want to spend the rest of the night in an agitated, defensive state. He had conceived of the night for the sole purpose of entertaining everyone. He needed people to have a good time, and clearly his churlish behavior was getting in the way of that. So the Brazilian sighed, defeat in his tone, and allowed his hand to be taken up by Melissa’s with a bittersweet smile. “You’re too good, d’you know that?” he grumbled out playfully, leaning over to deliver a sweet kiss on her temple before he followed her back to their compatriots. “I’ll be cool. So long as he’s cool.” Turns out, he wasn’t cool. High off the confidence of Roberto’s emotions, or perhaps simply suffering from momentary madness, Manuel refused to allow the moment to diffuse. Instead, he purposefully fanned the flames, slick as oil as he oozed his way, chest to chest to Roberto, righteous indignation in his cold words. Already that prompted Roberto’s shackles to flare up in defense – there was aggression in Manny’s body and language, and Roberto responded to aggression in kind. But just as he was getting sufficiently angry, just as he was about to lash out, indignant about the accusations being slung in his direction, Manuel dropped an emotional bomb. One simple phrase, five meager words, and suddenly the air was chilled. Roberto’s heart stopped beating, seized in fear, as his deepest, most private secrets were laid bare to the world, raw and naked. His eyes flickered towards Amara – a blur of gold – before he fixed them on Manuel again. His mouth was dry. “W-what?” Melissa stood there, feeling like a spectator as the events unfolded before her. Manny's words hit her hard and she looked to Amara as the woman proclaimed that it was time to leave. The way Amara reacted, the way Manny acted, and the way that Roberto was reacting all told her that there was truth behind it all. A dull feeling rose up from the pit of her stomach that made her feel a bit nauseous and she stood there stunned as she watched Amara and Manny turn to go, riding upon some things that Amara had conjured with her abilities. That dull feeling moved up her throat and into her head, making the sound of the fair around them seem dull. Her fingers, toes and lips felt numb and everything suddenly felt clammy. It felt like forever as she watched Amara go, but when the woman was out of sight, Songbird flicked her eyes towards Roberto and slowly turned her head towards him. Like him, her mouth was dry. “Is... is that true?” Melissa asked, already feeling like she knew that answer. But she just needed to hear it from him. There was a part of him preoccupied with Amara and Manuel leaving. There was a part of him incensed – how DARE Manny pull a stunt like that, what right did the Spanish degenerate have to go around revealing the contents of hearts to all the world? He wanted to hurt Manny, to hurt him badly for speaking out of place, for unequivocally ruining the evening. He wanted to be angry, and spiteful and hateful. Because if he was angry, he would have no room for the hurt. And without Manny to be angry with, he was left with nothing but the broken visage of his girlfriend. And boy, did that hurt. It felt like a stake going through his heart, the pain in her eyes. “Mel, he was just trying to hurt me,” he protested quickly, his brows furrowed in clear concern, in an almost desperate way to rationalize what had just happened to Melissa. After all, he might have loved Amara due to their long and extended history together, but he cared for Melissa deeply. It had been for Melissa that he decided to buckle down with – it was with Melissa he was building a life around. She held a rather large portion of his heart as well, and to lose her would be painful to everyone involved. “This is what he wants – to ruin my life! Baby, it’s you I’m with. It’s you I care for, I’m committed to, I chose!” Melissa's fingers straightened out and then spread apart enough to pull her grasp free from Roberto's hand. She turned towards him and that surge of emotion that spawned with Manuel's words finally reached the surface, causing her eyes to mist over. She wouldn't cry though. That wasn't possible. Not after all that Spiral and Creed had put her through, there was no way she would cry over this. Melissa raised both hands up and put them on Roberto, grabbing his shirt and gently pulling herself closer to him so that her body was pressed up against his and they were nose to nose. “That isn't what I asked you,” Mel said calmly, pushing aside the emotions that were trying to bubble to the surface. It would have been so easy for him to lie to her. She didn’t want to hear the truth anymore than he did – one deft flicker of his tongue could have possibly post-poned the inevitability of their breakdown for weeks, perhaps even months. But this was it; this was judgement day. There was to be no shunting of the truth until a later date, no denying what really was in favor of convenience. Not this time. It hurt to look into her eyes. To watch them water with emotion, to know that he was the cause of all this unhappiness. He only ever sought out to alleviate her pain, not compound it. Miserably, he spoke. “…Maybe. Yes. I didn’t....” Ask for this? Want this? Want to hurt her? All of these were right, and yet none of them felt right. He wanted to hold her to him and never let go. He feared that she was slipping away with every passing second. “Mel…” As Roberto confirmed the news, Melissa turned her head away from him, letting her long hair fall between her eyes and his to provide her a moment of privacy. For a moment, the white hair was all she could see and it reminded her of one thing. Or rather, one person. Spiral. The woman had pulled her away from everything and stripped her of everything that she was pretending to be while at XFI. Creed had broken her physically and Spiral had broken her physically and mentally. That month or so she spent in Spiral's custody, it had gotten downright primal, as they forced her to look within herself to find some way to survive. There was a side of Melissa that she had hidden away. The act that she put on in order to be released from SHIELD custody, to be accepted at XFI, to keep up such a fun and happy attitude all of the time; Spiral had stripped that away and made her be the person that she was trying to hide. When she returned to XFI, she had felt lost and out of place. But then there was Roberto. She had met him before her abduction and they had a sweet moment together. Seeing him again after Spiral had reminded her of this and it had helped her to find the person that she wanted to continue to be. A nice girl that did good things for people, who worked at XFI and provided help to those that needed it, and a good girlfriend to a guy that she loved... “Fuck, I loved him,” Melissa said quietly to herself, though their close proximity probably allowed Roberto to hear. And now she felt like she were laying on the floor again with Creed and Spiral standing over her, talking about what horrors to put her through next. Emotions disconnected and Melissa felt even more alone than before. Here was this X-man, Roberto, a billionaire who could probably be a male model, a hero to the world, and she was foolish enough to think that he would love her back? She was nothing. She had nothing. She had no one. She was just a pawn in this game that Roberto was playing, and that Spiral was playing, and that Creed was playing, and that Jamie was playing, and that SHIELD was playing. Everyone used her for something. Melissa turned her head back towards Roberto, raising a hand up to brush the hair out of her face and behind her shoulder. The misty eyes were gone, and she looked at him in a way that she never really had. Her eyes seemed to flair with a bright pink, though there was no indication that her powers were in use. “Manny said that I was kind and good,” she said bluntly, dropping her chin a bit as she looked at him. Melissa, her hands still on Roberto's chest, then pushed him away from her as hard as she could, which resulted in her pushing herself away more than anything. “He's fucking wrong. You're fucking wrong. Every person that has put trust in me is wrong!” she said, her voice raising and causing people that were passing by to look their way. “You acted like you cared about me?! Well fuck you, Roberto! All of this is a fucking act!” Melissa continued, taking a few steps forward in order to shove at him again. “I know exactly who I am and none of you would give two shits about me if you knew the truth. You can take your perfect little sheltered life and your perfect everything can go fuck yourself!” Melissa said, her voice growing even louder as her anger level rose. But then her voice dropped low as she said, “You didn't choose me. I'm just something to keep you entertained until you acted on what you feel for her.” She moved forward to shove him yet again. “Right?!” She had so much rage, pent up and finely tuned. Her gaze pierced through him in a manner that was not at all comfortable, that made him want to recoil, but he didn’t. He wouldn’t rob her of the satisfaction of taking it out on him as he deserved it. Around them, the escalation of their voices and their situation was beginning to summon a crowd. It was a messy situation at best, and conflict entertained. But Roberto didn’t even notice them; he only had eyes for Melissa. Melissa Gold used to be a mutant. But right now, she was a fury. “No, that’s about the only thing he was right about!” He insisted fervently. She shoved him back, but he was so much larger than her, all her shoves only seemed to illicit a stutter step backwards. “I do care about you, Mel! So much; this isn’t an act! I’m not an act, I’m not a liar!” The shoves kept coming, though. And they kept pushing him back, bit by bit, growing louder, more forceful, and more intense with every word spoken. Until finally she stopped. With chilling calmness she laid out her final words, and they cut deeper than anything else. Could she have been right? Could that been what he was doing? He liked to think no, that he’d never do something like that. But… “No, Mel,” he insisted, pleading with her softly. “You’re everything to me…you’re my girlfriend.” “No,” Melissa said, clenching her fists at her side and glaring at him. “You like everything to be about you. I would have done...” she paused, having to take a breath through her fury in order to see straight. “I would have done anything for you. I was even thinking about coming to the X-men to see if they could use another person like me, just to have a chance to fight and train along side you. To be some kind of hero like you. But fuck that. I have only met one X-man that wasn't a complete jackass or bitch and frankly I don't know Rho that well enough to judge it. Maybe there are some good ones, but you three?” Mel motioned to where Manny and Amara had been standing. “You three are all sacks of shit that don't care about anyone but the little drama you are creating for yourself! I'm just a fucking joke to you all, obviously. Amara didn't even stick around to face up to this shit and Manny just spouted that shit out like he was helping me out or something. And you? You have been playing me this whole time,” Mel said, her voice raising yet again. “I'm not your girlfriend, Roberto. I'm what I have been from the start. Nothing! So go chase that bitch back to your fucking mansion and I swear to God...” Mel paused again, taking a step or two towards him in order to draw close. Her whole body seemed to shake due to anger, and he might think that it was all because of him, but really Songbird was more mad at herself than anything. She was mad that Spiral was so right about everything. “If I see you again you better have friends, because I will,” Mel paused yet again, catching herself before she threatened Roberto's life. She didn't even think that she was capable of doing it, but whatever confidence that Spiral had put into her was flaring up in a bad way. “I will personally kick your ass out of Mutant Town, you lying... manipulating... sack of shit!” Songbird looked down towards the ground between them and opened her mouth. Amara can make a mutanty exit? Watch this. Pink energy pulsated out of her mouth in a sudden sonic boom, sending out a shockwave around them that sent several people to the ground and shattered nearby windows. The sonic boom also sent Melissa into the sky, massive pink wings forming behind her in order to catch her from falling. Another scream shook the world around them and Melissa shot out of sight, zipping away at a speed that would be hard to catch. This time, there was no ‘toughing it out’. This time, she knocked him flat on is keister, sent him hurtling to the ground along with everyone who was standing around to catch the show as she unleashed one of her trademark sonic screams. She took to the skies like a harbinger from greek mythos and with another heart-piercing screech, she was gone. He didn’t get up at first. He placed his hand over his eyes, cradling himself on the floor, until one of the law enforcers appeared. He was calmly escorted up and out of the premises. And it was with the heaviest of hearts that he walked home; walked until his feet bled. |
