No HOMETOWN: Akasaka, Tokyo, Japan KNOWN RELATIVES: Mushigi Manabu - Adopted Father Mushigi Akemi - Adopted Mother Ashida Seiji - Father (Deceased) Ashida Suki - Mother (Deceased) Ashida Noriko - Sister PHYSICAL APPEARANCE HEIGHT: 5’5” BUILD: Average, but a bit soft from irregular exercise. EYES: Brown HAIR: Black DISTINGUISHING MARKS: CLOTHING STYLE: Keitaro tends toward the ‘prep school’ look: very crisp and clean. Collared shirts, sweater vests, ties, polished shoes and pressed pants are included in his wardrobe without a trace of irony. UNIFORM: POWERS GENERAL DESCRIPTION: Heat/Fire Manipulation - It appears that he can absorb energy in the form of heat and store it in mutated cell reservoirs similar to those seen in his sister, Surge. Observations show that contact with large amounts of heat or long-term buildup of heat (say a bonfire as compared to sunlight) causes a dramatic spike in both core and surface body temperature, to the point that his body actually ignites. This makes him difficult to approach at close range, and any objects in contact with his person are reduced to ash almost instantly. Recorded tempuratures peak at 2,700 degrees. He has also shown the ability to superheat the air in order to create balls of flame which he can then control, though these don’t appear to continue burning when his attention wanders unless there is an outside source of fuel. Invulnerability to Fire - Keitaro can’t be burned by fire or other types of radiant heat, and is able to adapt to breathe in environments with relatively low levels of oxygen; however as of now this power extends only to him. Fire under his control will still burn bystanders. Electricity Conduction - Despite being incapable of manipulating electricity in any way, he is capable of channeling it harmlessly through his body without any apparent ill effects. This may be because of the mutations in his cell structure. WEAKNESS: His control of fire is tenuous at best, limited by his focus, line of sight, and physical proximity, with a relatively tiny range of only a few feet. His abilities are stunted by lower levels of oxygen and long periods in areas with low ambient temperature. (“Low” being defined as below fifty fahrenheit.) Less oxygen can be overcome; prolonged low temperatures will cause him to enter torpor similar to that of a reptile. In order to maintain normal energy levels he must double or even triple his required calorie intake to make up for the lack of energy drawn from heat. Other than mentioned resistances, his body is as vulnerable to harm and telepathic attack as an ordinary boy of his age and build. PERSONALITY At first glance he might be any meek, cheerful young man, but like most people appearances are far from everything. Growing up in the shadow of the struggle between his father and sister, he developed a stubborn streak a mile wide and a taste for mischief of all kinds. He has a quick smile and a thirst for knowledge that drives him above and beyond many people his age. Keitaro isn’t content with memorizing rote facts, but loves to acquire deep understanding in any subject that catches his interest. This doesn’t guarantee an excellent student, but in addition to a natural inclination to orderliness and a cultivated work ethic, he’s a quick student at almost anything he wants to learn. Despite being fairly insightful, he doesn’t always realize he might be unwelcome, and a slight self-absorbed streak is a stumbling block he is only slowly learning to overcome. His brilliance can also make him seem patronizing at times, since he often underestimates people that don’t fit his definition of intelligence. HISTORY: PRE-APOCALYPSE Keitaro is youngest child of Ashida Seji and Suki. His father was a businessman that owned a successful chain of electronics stores, and it was always a given that his only son would be the one to take over the when he finally stepped down. He was the golden child, at once incapable of any wrongdoing and crushed under his father’s high expectations. While Noriko was punished harshly for even minor infractions, no matter how he tried to rebel it was brushed off as “a young man stretching his wings” or “a phase all great men go through” or other things of the sort. After a while it made him feel his actions didn’t have any real meaning, while his sister seemed to move mountains in her frustration. Like many children that grow up with siblings with dramatically different personalities, much of his self-image was defined by his ever-defiant sister. His people-pleasing nature made him many friends, but Noriko was undoubtedly his best and closest. She was one of the few he didn’t feel he had to please, but also the only one in his family that really listened to anything he had to say. She was his childhood hero. He’s still deeply guilty about the unequal treatment they received and how little he could do to correct it, though he’s never said so to Noriko. Then Nori’s flareups started, and things went from bad to worse. Noriko became a pariah in the world, in their school, and in their own home, and Keitaro was her one and only friend. It was a lot of weight for a young boy to bear, but he did his best. Despite Seji’s temper, Keitaro loved his father and craved his approval. However what happened that night would drive a wedge between father and son for the rest of their lives. He blamed his father and his father alone for what happened. That night, Ashida Noriko disappeared. Keitaro searched for his sister covertly for months, scanning faces on the street and carrying the most recent picture of her in his wallet. Needless to say he never found her – she was easily as smart as he was, and if she didn’t want to be found there was little hope a kid could find where she went. DURING APOCALYPSE (April 7th through April 12th, 2009) [You need to cover what your character was doing during Apocalypse in this section of the application. The summary can be found here: http://z4.invisionfree.com/Xrevolution/ind...?showtopic=4495] The Ashida family home was destroyed when their building collapsed during the first onslaught on Japan. Both Seji and Seiko disappeared that day, and their bodies were never recovered. Keitaro was significantly further inland at his part-time job, and he survived with only minor injuries. Even so, he was child alone in the chaos and destruction of his homeland. It was something he would never forget. POST-APOCALYPSE With the bureaucratic process decimated by the disaster, twelve-year-old Keitaro spent several long weeks in a series of refugee camps and shelters, where he saw firsthand how ruthless desperate people could be. He proved ill-equipped for the experience. Eventually he met what was left of the Mushigi family, a husband and wife named Manabu and Akemi who lost contact with their only daughter during the Apocalypse. In the wake of the tsunami they were forged into a family unit, and they legally adopted him three months later. When their daughter was officially declared dead, he mourned their loss though he never knew the young woman personally. He occupied himself with school and some new friends, with the same level of excellence that was now a habit, though there was no one to rage if he failed. He was a less happy child than he was a few years ago. Though he cared deeply for his adoptive parents, he was always aware of both the sister he never met and the sister he hadn’t thought he would ever see again. It was a stroke of luck that he saw her – it was unmistakably Noriko - mentioned on a news report. To this day he couldn’t tell you what the report was about, the only thing he got from it was that his sister was still alive. For the remainder of the year Keitaro pulled every string available to him and his new family and eventually got a letter to Noriko. He’s not ashamed to say he cried when he got her reply. Some of his old brightness returned to him, Keitaro doubled down on his schoolwork, and took every English class available, including a foreign-language club in addition to his usual extra-curriculars. He was determined to visit Noriko someday, and like the geek he was, was unwilling to go ill-equipped. Of course, his new-found peace didn’t last long. Keitaro was captured by a human-trafficking ring on his way home from a get-together with some of his friends. It was a dark and terrifying time for the young man, more than even the events of the Apocalypse. For a time he was convinced he would never be found, destined to be chattel. But he was. Noriko and the X-men came to his rescue in heroic fashion and cemented his positive outlook on mutants. PURIFIERS Fourteen-year-old Keitaro exchanged irregular letters with Noriko since they regained contact, but he always suspected she toned down the stories of her adventures for his benefit. He was proved right when he watched the events of the Purifiers unfold on the news. Horrified and lost in the wake of a tragedy for mutantkind – this was a struggle that was very personal for him, given the suffering he’d witnessed firsthand as a child – he found himself looking for an answer, any answer. He started reading anything about the x-gene he could get his hands on, and studying biology texts in his spare time. Surely this violence came from fear, a lack of understanding, rather than inherent cruelty? SKRULLS Keitaro spent the Skrull invasion brainwashed along with the rest of the population of the earth, and was released in the same way. Needless to say he was not thrilled at the idea of crazy alien mind control, but the world was getting weirder and weirder and he had to weirdify along with it. CURRENT HISTORY Following Noriko’s attack on his school, all hell broke loose. Many students died due to mutations their bodies couldn’t support or powers that went out of control. Unlike some of the abominations that Noriko unwillingly created, he survived because he was knocked out and didn’t present an obvious target to his maddened schoolmates or the soldiers brought in to deal with the issue. Eventually Keitaro was interviewed by members of Horizon Labs and kept under what amounted to quarantine while his powers were tested and measured. Finally it was agreed that he would attend the Institute, at least until he was no longer a danger to himself and others. Once his papers were cleared, he was null-cuffed and shipped to the school in all due haste. SAMPLE RP POST: Akemi was sobbing into her hands. “It’s okay, Mother.” Keitaro wrapped his arms around his shoulders and press his cheek to her hair. He was struck by how fragile she seemed, in a way that he hadn’t seen for years. She reminded him of his birth mother in her softness, though she had a steel that Ashida Suki would have found distasteful. “I’m not leaving forever… and I promise to write often.” Manabu – his father – had the large, rough hands of a man that worked with his hands for a living. One went to Keitaro’s shoulder and the other to Akemi’s, with excessive gentleness as if he or they might break if he used too much pressure. It was different from his birth father, whose love was possessive and controlling as it could be generous. He hated himself just a little for preferring Manabu’s gentle guidance. Keitaro hugged them both tightly, and then pulled away. “Thank you for everything, I couldn’t have done this without you.” He almost wanted to detail every way they had made his life better, but that would take way too long, and he didn’t have a lot of time. He fiddled with the cuff on his wrist, looking for words that could say… everything. There weren’t any, of course. “I love you." He hugged them each one last time, and had to pry himself from his adoptive mother's hands. It broke his heart. "Goodbye.” |
