Maria Hill
Unregistered

Date: 22 September
Location: Briefing room on the Hellicarrier.

Aaron was with Northstar. Cloak and Dagger were inbound. He hadn't gotten ahold of Nemesis yet but he wouldn't have been terribly surprised if the megaminds at Horizon sent someone over, given there prowess for broad thinking in tight spots and their newfound connection with the international agency. All they needed now was a bit of SHIELD's data web trappings to go on and they could get a move on licking this thing before it became too huge of a problem. Not that it wasn't already huge. Darkforce in and of itself was a corruptive, unpredictable form of energy-matter and he'd seen it turn bright souls dark and violent just as much as he'd seen the faintest touch of it wither away youth and vibrance. Nasty, terrifying, unpredictable stuff.

Also good as a parasol, apparently.

"Deputy Hill." He said as he hop-skipped through the door of the small briefing room he'd asked for a moment of her time in.  "I'm sorry to take you away from your bridge but this is more than just a few dark hours and some inconvenient maneuverings. I feel like, at this point in the game, something is incredibly rotten in regards to the stink wafting off of this entire affair."

The Illuminati had played yet another card, and SHIELD were no closer to working out what the end game was, let alone what the rules were. The smallest glimmer of hope had come with the capture of Exodus, but that had soon been completely obliterated when the Brotherhood had freed their leader, along with other prisoners. Maria hated being so obviously on the back foot, simply reacting to whatever crisis came along and doing the best to plug the holes in what felt like a sinking ship. Now she surveyed the latest piece of Illuminati handiwork from the large vista provided by the windows at the front of the Helicarrier; an unbroken sea of black. Though there had been no global proclamation, there was little doubt who was responsible and SHIELD was once more scrambling to catch up.

“Dr McCoy has arrived, Assistant Director.” Maria turned as the voice sounded in her comms link and made her way towards the briefing room McCoy had requested. “Keep me informed.” She ordered, perhaps unnecessarily, as she left the bridge, but she was in no mood for being left out of anything. The briefing room was empty when she entered and she had time to pour a glass of water for herself before the doors slid open, allowing the X-Man to enter.

“You can smell that, too?” She questioned, deadpan. “Please, take a seat.” She indicated towards a chair in the room and sat down herself. Though she felt too agitated to be sitting for too long, Maria wanted to exhibit some level of calm and control, however unlikely it was that such an act would fool McCoy. “How can we help one another, Dr McCoy? I assume that as you’ve come all this way you have something to offer me and we have something that you need.”

"I do." He said. "And I do."

Maria Hill wasn't what he'd describe as prickly, exactly, but she wasn't the warmest person to talk to. Still, she was a more noble sort than most of the people he'd met that had had the dubious honor of running SHIELD. Hodge was a lying, two-faced bastard. Fury was a lying, two-faced bastard of slightly less questionable morals. Despite the run-in with the Skrulls he couldn't help but think Hill would be the straighter of the three, honesty-wise.

"This is darkforce, as I'm sure you and yours have noted. It's non-corruptive, as well as non corrosive, at least not to the extent of various others. This has led me to two theories. The loss of Exodus noted in the SHIELD reports from a month back noted the loss of a handful of other prisoners..."

He wondered in that moment if he was supposed to have known about that. Oh well, no secrets, right?

"One of whom was Maria Siegel, codename Erebus, an old Hellfire Castoff. That can't have been coincidence, but this stuff is quite similar to her stuff, if you'll excuse me speaking in layman's terms, and on the off chance that her 'liberation' isn't somehow connected, her capacity to manipulate Darkforce is almost directly derived from that of another skidmark on the underpants of life, Max Coleridge."

He slid a flash-drive across the table at her. "As I'm sure you know, neither of these are particularly desirable people. Those are our files on both as well as the readings I took from over the Institute early today. I have a theory, and a strategy in mind but I need your resources and Horizon's minds."

Hill could have questioned how McCoy knew about the escape of Exodus and the other prisoners, but frankly there seemed little point in it. The X-Men had always been far more informed than many in SHIELD gave them credit for. While they were on largely amicable terms it would likely cause more damage than it would good to start making an issue out of the situation. Her more pressing concern was who else had the same information, but that was all for another time.

Maria nodded slowly as McCoy laid out his theories, noting two possible culprits, both of which had been placed extremely high on SHIELDs wanted list, with Coleridge topping the bill. “They’re both strong possibilities. Coleridge is Hellfire and we know they are connected to the Illuminati. Siegel has made off with Exodus and the Brotherhood as far as we could track them.” As she spoke she reached across the table to pick up the USB, turning it over in her hands. “Personally, I’m inclined to go for Coleridge; he has the tech, the brains and the money for this kind of thing. Siegel is a loose canon, just another mutant turned weapon.”

Reaching out, she pressed a discreet button on the side of the table and the surface sprang to life as essentially a large version of a tablet. Entering her details and authorization code, Maria was given access to SHIELD’s files. She pulled up some recent documents and with a swipe of her hand sent a few images upwards, so they were now being projected onto one of the walls. “Right before our sensors got taken out completely they picked up on the wave of Darkforce so we have a vague idea of where it is coming from. And I stress the word vague there. We have been trying to set up more detailed searches but it’s difficult, as I’m sure you can appreciate.”

Plugging the USB into a port on the table, Maria extracted the files McCoy had provided, flicking through the documents. “So, your strategy. What is it and what do you need from us?” Hill questioned, looking up from the files towards the mutant.
