I know it's early to be asking about this, DON'T FREAK OUT YOU GUYS. (also if I don't post this now I'll probably just forget all about it and have to wait until next year) I just wanted to see if anyone would be interested in a site-wide Secret Santa for Christmas--for us, not the characters. I'm just asking this far ahead in advance because I know some of us are broke and would have to scrape together some money and then allow for shipping time. We could even break it up into hemispheres to try to keep costs low. So what do you think? It'd be on a sign-up basis only, so no pressure for anyone to do it if you don't want to. I thought it'd just be a fun thing for us to do together as a group. --- EDIT: Yay people are interested! So far signed up we have: Natalie (me) Tristan Steve Lauren Si Gavin Olga Jackie Heather Jesse Alex Lindsay Daniel Malene |

Tennyson II CODENAME: Sherlock NICKNAMES: Xander CURRENT AGE: 17 DATE OF BIRTH: October 1, 1996 MARITAL STATUS: Single SEXUAL ORIENTATION: Hetero BASE OF OPERATIONS: Xavier's School TIME AT INSTITUTE: None yet REGISTERED WITH SHIELD? Yes HOMETOWN: Nottingham, England KNOWN RELATIVES: Alexander Tennyson, Father; Julianna Tennyson, Mother [Deceased] PHYSICAL APPEARANCE HEIGHT: 5’9” BUILD: Slight but athletic EYES: Hazel HAIR: Brown DISTINGUISHING MARKS: Xander has both ears pierced. CLOTHING STYLE: Xander has two very distinct styles of dress, depending on the activities he's engaged in. That is, everyday dress and skateboarding clothing. His general wear tends towards a classy business casual look. He favors dress shirts with the sleeves rolled up, in solid colors. Over the top he generally sports a four button vest that is either charcoal gray or a black pinstripe. He'll either be wearing well-fitted jeans, or dress slacks that match the chosen vest. To contrast this, he has a variety of brightly colored Chuck Taylor shoes. Skate time calls for a much more casual look. Here are the well-worn and broken in jeans with ripped knees and frayed hems. Tee shirts with energy drink and skateboard logos cover his torso. Holdovers from his years on the amateur circuit. UNIFORM: The general student uniform. POWERS GENERAL DESCRIPTION: Enhanced Senses/Sensory Focus: When most people think of the senses, they focus on the main five. Science has pinned down at least twenty. Xander has personally noticed about seven that he operate outside the typical human parameters: Sight: His eyes hold twice the number of rods and cones. This means that he perceives colors outside the normal visual spectrum. He can make out the infrared and ultraviolet spectrums, as well as a myriad of color variation in normal light that others just can't see. The world is a truly beautiful place. His night vision is like that of a cat. Colors fade in the dark, but he capable of seeing at near perfect clarity in the dimmest illumination. As long as there is not pitch black conditions. His iris and lens are capable of focusing his vision many times more than usual. While not as accurate as a hawk, he can focus on objects 3 times farther away than normal with good detail. Past that, things get blurry, fast. Hearing: Specialized structures within the ear allow him to pick up sounds outside the normal range. Concentration allows him to pinpoint sounds, and follow them back to their sources, like a primitive echolocation. The normal ear hears frequencies between 20 hertz and 20,000 hertz. Xander's ear works from 2hz, (a human heartbeat), to 80,000hz, capable of hearing lower frequency ultrasound. Smell: Xander's nose is sensitive enough to discern multiple levels of scent at once. Enough so that he can identify a person by their smell alone. He can differentiate multiple layers of scent, discerning a person's smell from the surrounding area, and the fried chips in their hand. This does allow him to track by scent, if the trail is very fresh. Touch Differences in the sense of touch are hard to define. In general, he is more receptive to sensations involving touch. He can read the print in a normal book with his fingertips, differentiate between temperature changes as low as 2 degrees. He can sense slight tremors and small movements through solid objects if he is physically touching them. Also, a really good kisser. Magentoception: This is the body's ability to sense magnetic forces. Typically, this translates into the ability to read the magnetic pull of the earth. Most simply put, a person's sense of direction. While Xander may not actually be a map, he can always tell you which direction is north. Extremely strong magnetic pulses will disrupt this sense. Anything on the scale of an EMP would cause sensory overload. Chronoception: Ability to sense the passage of time. He always knows exactly what time of day it is. Never needs winding. This is the most recent of Xander's senses to evolve. Currently, that is as much as it does. Photographic Memory: If he's done it or read it, he remembers it. This doesn't necessarily mean understanding. He could recite the Encyclopedia Britannica in German for you, but it wouldn't make any sense if he never bothered to learn German. (Which he hasn't.) It also doesn't mean that he can instantly dredge up pertinent information. Some things may be more buried in the impartial file cabinet that is his brain, and take longer to pull to the front. To a lesser extent, this extends to physical skills. Not like true muscle memory, or the ability to copy things he's seen. But he never forgets things that he's practiced. Once perfected, a 180 ollie is always a 180 ollie. A jab is always a jab. It's just the opposition that changes. WEAKNESS: ADHD/Boredom: One drawback to remembering everything you read or see is that you can never read or see it again without knowing it. Rereading things or rewatching them loses any thrill. Even the things you love become boring after a while. So it is that Xander feels the drive to push boundaries and seek knowledge constantly. To be still is to stagnate, which is the same as death. Sensory Overload: While having the ability to see and hear more than most people sounds great, it has a tendency to be overwhelming. When there is too much input at the same time, it can cause Xander to kind of short circuit. This generally leads to him passing out for a period of time. When he wakes up, his senses are dulled to what a normal person’s are. Sensory Deprivation: On the flipside, if Xander focuses too much on one single sense, the others have a tendency to dim. For instance, if he strains to hear a particular sound in the distance, he stands the chance that another sense will compensate by failing. He may find his sight faltering as he tries to catch that sound, or his balance may give way as he tries to see something far in the distance. Knowledge without context: Knowledge is power, but only if understanding comes with it. As noted above, just because he’s memorized something doesn’t mean he understands it, or can use the knowledge. Great at trivia games, though. PERSONALITY At his core, Xander is a man of simple tastes. He likes skateboards and heavy rock music. He likes mysteries and redheads; meeting new people and girls with foreign accents. Life is full of simple pleasures, just waiting to be enjoyed. New things around every corner to be learned and discovered. The eternal optimist, he refuses to let the world get him down. Not only is the glass half full, but he knows where they hide the good stuff to fill it up again. In his dealings with other people, Xander is friendly and outgoing. Other people are always interesting, once you get past the fluff that they wear as masks. Good or bad, well known or misunderstood doesn't matter. He refuses to judge anyone on the word of others. There is a tendency for him to come off as cocky and a little pushy at times. He prefers to think of it as confidence in himself and his abilities. It does occasionally put him at odds with those in positions of authority, as he has trouble following orders that he disagrees with. And busy work frustrates him. Xander's father is his personal hero, and he's done his best to assimilate the old man's moral compass as his own. His da, a classics professor at London University, believes that chivalry never died, and that there is still a place in the world for gentlemen. Seventeen years of this, and a steady diet of heroic literature has crystallized into a very firm code of ethics, and a belief that one person can change the world, as long as they don't give up on who they are. HISTORY: PRE-APOCALYPSE Xander’s birth was a wholly unremarkable affair. He was delivered without complications, presented to his mother and father, and christened as per normal. The first three years of his life were typical for a child, and he was happy. Shortly after his third birthday, his mother Julianna, was struck by a drunk driver. She died in the hospital, devastating Alex. Knowing he will be unable to care for the boy on his own, he takes a sabbatical. The University gives him a month to find a nanny and get his house in order. After several weeks of interviews, Alex had almost given up hope of finding the right person for the job. Then Samantha Claret arrived into their life. She found Alex as he was headed to the paper to place an advert, since the agency had failed him. Curiously, she was standing in line to place an advert as well, seeking employment as a nanny. Inspired by serendipity, or perhaps desperation, Alex hires her on the spot. It turns out to be the perfect solution, as Samantha and young Xander take to each other instantly. They move to an apartment in London proper, placing his da closer to work. Samantha becomes part of the family eerily quickly, but no one questions it. Up to this point, there have been no outward signs of any mutation in the boy. At the tender age of seven, Xander falls in love for the first time. Her name is Matilda: she has four wheels, loose trucks, and black grip tape. She’s the birthday present of a lad down the block from him, and he trades the unathletic youth a game boy for her. The two are inseparable for three years, and several sets of wheels, until she breaks. He mourns for a week before buying a new skateboard. By the age of ten Xander is competing in junior amateur events in and around London. There have been a few minor spells of disorientation, and several teachers have remarked on his ability to retain information, but nothing truly out of the ordinary. On the back of a skateboard, he’s considered a prodigy. Pictures with Tony Hawk are taken, and there is talk of him being the youngest person allowed to compete at the pro level. Before the events of April 7th. DURING APOCALYPSE (April 7th through April 12th, 2009) Xander was visiting his father on campus when the Death and the zombies came. Samantha, unusually perceptive as always, ushered them inside just before everything went to hell. Barricaded in Alex’s third floor office, they listened to radio reports of the chaos outside. They survived on the tins of meat, crackers, and bottled water in Samantha’s enormous purse. Alex begins to have suspicions about the nanny, but before he can question her other things pop up. Xander’s powers pick now to slam into the fully locked position, and the sudden sensory overload sends the boy into a near epileptic fit. He quickly passes out, and is unconscious for more than a day. He wakes just as things are clearing up outside, and remembers nothing. Alex, ever attentive, starts to have suspicions about the color of things, and does a little digging on the side. His research forces Alex to come to terms with the fact that his son may indeed be a mutant. Samantha catches him one night, poring over webpages late into the evening. The next day, while Xander is at school, she confronts him about it. She demands to know if the fact that Xander may be a mutant affects his feelings for the boy. He adamantly denies this. His only interest is being able to help his son be safe, and healthy. Satisfied with his honesty, Samantha admits that she, too, is a mutant. While her ability is small, a minor karmic manipulation, it has gotten her fired on more than one occasion. Again, Alex denies any bigotry. She agrees to stay on, and help Xander cope, if it comes to that. POST-APOCALYPSE London is a resilient kind of town. They’ve bounced back from two world wars, terrorist attacks, and soccer hooligans. And they recovered from the havoc caused by Apocalypse, as well. Though it was a slightly different London than it had been before. There was a little less trust. Fewer hellos were shared amongst strangers. For the now teenaged Xander, things were getting more interesting. If, by interesting, one means full of bright lights, loud sounds, and oodles of headaches. Oodles. For the most part, he manages to keep it from teachers and other students, but they suspect something. Considering his hobbies and the people he runs with, they all assume drugs. He would have laughed. The only drugs he had any interest in at that point were aspirin and BC powder. Not that they did much but keep the edge off. Alex kept a close eye on his son during those months, waiting for something to either confirm his fears or assuage them. When Xander passed out in the middle of a Newcastle United match, screaming and clutching his head, it was enough. Trying to avoid causing a scene, he snuck Xander home and confronted the boy. Xander confessed that he was afraid of the same thing; that he was a mutant. Alex comforts him, confident that he will still be himself, even if he is a mutant. Samantha starts tutoring Xander on ways to control the effects of his powers. She focuses mainly on meditation techniques and breathing exercises to keep him calm, and in control. There is little she can teach him about the actual usage of his abilities. For that, all he has is experimentation, and time. PURIFIERS The reports of anti-mutant violence scare the whole household. Alex decides to pull Xander from school. The boy is having more epiodes that are difficult to hide. No longer passing out all the time, but he's prone to staring into space. Seeing and hearing things that others don't will always make you stand out. Not in good ways. It is also decided that Xander won't be joining the pro circuit. SKRULLS Samantha and Xander both notice something is amiss, though neither can put their fingers on exactly what. Nothing could prepare them for the wave released by the Skrulls, and they fall victim to it the same as everyone else. This time is a blur, until everything is suddenly back to normal. Everyone agrees that it would be best for Xander if he were to go somewhere else, and learn how to use his abilities better. Xander agrees, mainly because he believes it will be safer for his Da and Samantha. Xavier's is contacted, and Xander is accepted as a student. ILLUMINATI Xander joined the classes of the Xavier school while it was still housed in the Savage Land. Utopia was a shock for the boy, just becoming comfortable with the fact that he was a mutant. Being suddenly surrounded by people who thought that his accent was more bizarre than his powers was unnerving, at first. But the acceptance he found at Xavier's was invigorating, like the big family he never had but always wanted. It was like being on the skateboarding circuit again, only better. Here, he didn't have to hide who he was. Then reality came crashing in on his pretty little life. He was confused and terrified by the events that unfolded in the Savage Lands, and the subsequent move back to America. The world was covered in a darkness that was both figurative and literal. His curiosity warred with his common sense, begging him to go forth and find clues. But instead, he stayed where he was, and helped comfort and care for the younger students. For a moment, the darkness lifted, and it seemed like all would go back to what passed for normal. Then Cyclops, teacher and role model, was killed on the grounds of the Institute. Xander was not immune to the shock and dismay that came over the school. He mourned with the rest of his fellow students, and felt the real grip of fear for the first time. The previous events had been scary, true. But this had happened on their front lawn. Everything prior had almost felt like it wasn't real. This was unavoidable. CURRENT HISTORY Before it had happened, Xander hadn't had any real plans for where all this was leading him. He'd thought maybe he would go back to England when he had control of his powers, maybe use them to better the world. Now, however, he felt driven to use them to help uphold the dream that Cyclops and other had died for. Whether he would do that as an X-man, or part of the investigative team he'd heard about remained to be seen. SAMPLE RP POST: Xander stood on the roof of the apartment building, his eyes focused on nothing in particular. He was taking in the view one last time; drinking in all the sights, sounds, and smells of his town. London. She was the greatest city in the world, as far as he was concerned. Nowhere else would have these exact colors, or these sounds. The air wouldn’t smell like this anywhere else he went. Chip shops and lorries, late evening fog and the faint scent of the swamp that lay beneath it all, forgotten. The access door creaked, and the aromas of ink and Turkish tobacco joined the mix. “Heya, Da,” he said without turning. He heard the old man chuckle quietly and light a cigarette before sauntering over to join him. For several minutes they simply stood there in amiable silence, taking comfort in each other. The only conscious sound was Alex’s expulsion of smoke through his nostrils, twin dragon streamers. It was the surest sign Xander knew that his father was troubled, though the old man would never admit it. “I’m going to be fine, Da,” Xander said, looking at his father from the corner of his eye. “You worry too much. You always have.” He watched as his father crushed out the cigarette and looked out over the neighborhood. There was sadness in his eyes, but pride in his voice as he spoke. “I know, son,” he said. “But it’s my job to worry. You’re all I’ve got.” He surprised Xander by pulling him into an awkward, but fierce, sideways hug. The man had never been much for physical demonstrations of affection. It just wasn’t his way. Never once, in his seventeen years, had Xander ever doubted that his father cared for him. But he was very British. “So,” he said, his voice unusually gruff, “what are you looking at up here?” Xander shrugged, leaning momentarily into the embrace. He drank in the familiar smells that defined the old man; old ink, worn leather, wool sweaters and hand-rolled cigarettes. Plus the indefinable smell that was simply Dad. “I’m just taking it all in one last time,” he said, eyes unfocused. “It may be a while before I get to see it again.” “I’ve never asked,” his dad said quietly, “but what do you see out there?” Surprised, Xander stood, looking directly at his father. The man had been a rock throughout everything that had happened, stable and supportive. He’d accepted his son despite the media’s paranoia, and the neighbor’s hatred. Never once had he asked what it was like, or demanded proof of his son’s differences. Everything was exactly what it was supposed to be. A thoughtful frown pursed Xander’s lips. “It’s hard to explain,” he said, turning his attention once more to the skyline. “I can remember what the night used to look like, what the world used to smell like. But I never paid it much mind. Too young, I suppose, for such things. Now, stars twinkle, and they glow in colors I don’t have names for. There’s the blue that’s almost green, but also kind of red. It’s not aqua, it’s not purple. It is blue-green-red, all at the same time. But over here there’s another one that I can’t even describe, because there aren’t any references for it. It is its own color. I wish I could show it to you, Da. Just once.” His hands moved expansively as he spoke, pointing to the stars in question. One day, he truly hoped to find a way to capture this view as he saw it. It’d make a very fitting gift for the old man. A thank you for everything he’d done, and everything he’d given up to make sure Xander was taken care of. For now, though, he’d focus instead on paying it forward. It was, after all, the Tennyson way. “Come on, Da,” he said, tugging lightly at the old man’s sleeve. “High time for us Irregulars to get some sleep. Tomorrow is a big day.” |

Telepathy (I'm not a bloody ninja)

Hey Succurro, sorry for the delay on this. Thanks for taking the time to apply and for trying to get as familiar with the site as possible. Bear with me as I have a little feedback and if you need help, you can contact me or another staff member and we’ll answer any questions. 1. To link an image, you need to first load it on to photobucket or imageshack etc, then place the link in [IMG] tags. 2. Why (or rather how) has he got so many tattoos at the age of 17? It’s not massively important, but it is illegal in the UK to tattoo individuals under the age of 18, unless it’s for medical purposes so I want to see a little justification other than the obvious thing that it looks cool. 3. The powers are good, but some of them either need culling or defining better. For example: May be influenced by large magnetic pulses nearby, but he hasn't had a reason to test this. He either is or he isn’t. It’s fine that he doesn’t know, but we need to know. Nociception: The ability to sense pain. Or, in Xander's case, the ability to turn off certain pain receptors. Handy at times. Again, which pain receptors? This sort of thing extends to all areas of his powers. Even if he doesn’t really understand how, why or what, you the player need to show it in the app so we know you’re not tossing things randomly into game when the occasion calls for it. As for never falling by accident, how would this transfer into a fight situation? Is he going to be untouchable? I’m not sure I’m entirely comfortable with the intuitive reasoning right off the mark, as that could be seen as an unfair advantage. Maybe down the line with a lot of in game learning and practise he can develop this, but as a new student he’ll have to be toned back a little in the interest of being able to learn with the rest of the student body. I know you’ve tried hard in the weaknesses to balance him so I want you to understand I’m not saying forever no, just for the time being. 4. History - why does his mother vanish? Who exactly sent Samantha as a plant, as this is kind of odd and does not fit with much else that has happened on the site before. it just seems a convenient plot device so someone can teach him about his powers. Purifiers - Why was he pulled from school? The vast majority of the Purifier attacks were in New York City and the surrounding area. This doesn’t make an awful lot of sense. At the time of the Skrulls, the school was within the Savage Land but even so, he would not have been waiting around 18 months to be accepted. That isn’t how the school operates. Why so much tension and paranoia? It reads to me like you have a whole hidden story under this app and again, we might not know in character but out of character, we need to know things. You need to try and add some things about the Illuminati plot as well, if you can. Unfortunately it has not been added to the site history thread yet, but you can find details in the Weekly Story Updates section or you are welcome to ask about it. Things to think about are the London Mad Bombs, the Dark X-men, Namor’s attacks, the Darkness that was launched globally etc. This isn’t a bad app, but in some places you’re just lacking that little edge of detail and explanation that would make it extra good. By detail I don’t mean length, so don’t worry about giving me a novel. But you do need to explain yourself a little more. Again, if you need help just ask, or post when you’ve made your edits. |
