GENERAL DESCRIPTION:
Alexanders powers are based on electricity, but his connection is only to vehicles, if it has wheels and an ignition, Alex can talk to it. His connection with cars goes back to his base training as a mechanic, he has spend a lot of time around cars, fixing them, tinkering with them and working out how they work. There’s simply no better explanation for this bond than that these cars seem to like him.

Alexanders brain waves are different from other peoples, they work more like little electrical pulses, connection in the beginning almost automatically with any car that was even near him. The way vehicles speak to him is through some noises that only he can hear and even if you could hear it, you wouldn’t be able to understand it. Alexanders brain automatically converts the communications into language, like the brain automatically converts our sight to be right side up. The communication is very limited though, cars aren’t Shakespearian poets and they mostly either comply or refuse, though Alexanders own car (which he has had for eight years) has become a tiny bit sentient from the exposure to Alex himself.

Alex can lock or unlock a car from a distance of about 20 meters, he can call a car to him at the same distance, he can remote-control a car within the same distance, and he doesn’t need to keep his hand on the wheel when driving. A simple thought is enough to control a car he’s in, he can weave through traffic like nobody’s business and push a car to its speed limit without even trying.

To be completely clear; Vehicles with electrical wires (trucks, cars, auto-campers with wheels, tanks, scooters, motorcycles, busses, planes) would technically be accessible by Alex. But only cars would be accessible fast, any other electrically wired transportation device would take time and they still need to be within twenty meters of him, and visible.

WEAKNESS:
Alex himself has not explored the full extend of his powers. He has played around with it a bit, but he has never tested exactly how far he can push it. He also doesn’t know anything about the science that allows him to do the things he does, it is one of the areas where he considers ignorance to be bliss.

Alex's ability to command specifically cars so easily stems from his knowledge of a cars inner workings, he knows what needs to change in a cars engine for it to be able to do as he commands. And because Alex has not received education on any other transportation device, commanding them does not come as easily. It's strenuous on his brain and will give him a serious headache, a nosebleed or could even possibly kill him if he tries too hard on a transportation device he doesn't understand. If Alex himself is unconscious or near unconsciousness he cannot communicate with anything; even extreme emotions can make it hard for him to connect with his target, with the exception of anger. Anger makes his powers go haywire and extreme anger will make every car alarm within a 20-meter radius go off. Over usage of his powers (even with cars) will gain him a splitting headache and as long as that persists, he cannot connect with anything – it’s quite literally his brain over-heating, and as long as he is over-heated he can’t use his ability. His power is also dependent on his sight, he needs to be able to see the appliance or vehicle, or with vehicles at least be aware that there is one, to be able to connect with it.

But Alex’s biggest weakness is that in many ways he is ”just a human”. He has the physique of a normal, albeit gym-going, 25 year old male. Even another human in a fight where that human has a knife, can take him down. If you cut his skin he bleeds and if you punch him in the face, it hurts him. He does have a certain experience with bar-fights, but would be completely outmatched by anyone with extensive martial arts training.

PERSONALITY

Alex likes to have fun. He doesn't like when things get to serious or dark and will always try to lighten the mood with a clever quip, he has trouble expressing his feelings and should the situation demand it he would rather lie a little bit than let anyone know he's deep than a teaspoon. He doesn't like to let people in, the many betrayals in his past have left him with a deep seated need to be invulnerable so he can't be hurt. When you’ve spent most of your childhood and teenage years being looked down on for being poor, and add to that mix a bit of identity issues with the whole mutant things, you tend to be careful about how vulnerable you allow yourself to be with other people. Mostly Alex is a big clusterfuck of a person, he drinks too much, chain smokes and contrary to how he carries himself; he thinks very little of himself. His self-confidence is all smoke no fire. Alex can be a stubborn ass when he wants to be and he hates being judged for his choices; he is his own worst judge and jury, he doesn't need anyone else coming in to tell him he screwed up his life.

Hatred for his father dwells in him as well, hatred for a man he never knew who abandoned his mother to raise him on her own. Anger towards the boy who killed his uncle and towards the unfairness of his life. In his darkest hours he drinks a lot of booze and seeks release from this anger and hatred through fights. He goes looking for them, goes to biker bars and picks a fight with the biggest dude he can find. All in all, Alex believes that life has given him a shitty hand and that's why he likes to keep his cards close to his chest.

Alex is the type of man who has a lot of friends, but no best friend. It's not that he can't make deep connections with anyone, he just hasn't yet and is less than likely to with the crowd he's running with now. Another of Alex's main traits is that he wants to be good, he wants to do good; for his mother, for uncle Marv. He's loyal to his friends, he believes everyone should have equal rights, he wants to help if he can and he is not sadistic and he doesn't want to be. But he can be tempted by wealth. If the right person was to offer the right amount of money to a person with Alex background of poverty, he could be persuaded to drop his morals completely.

HISTORY: PRE-APOCALYPSE
Alexander Mackenzie was born twenty-five years ago, just around when mutants were exposed to the world. Although the knowledge took a bit longer to not just be considered a “government lie” or “a publicity stunt” in Tonganoxie, Leavenworth County, Kansas. A small town with just about 2000 registered people living there at the time. Irene Mackenzie was completely ordinary with a high school diploma and not much else to her name, she was working at a road-side dinner on a trucker route a little way out of Tonganoxie when she met Alex’s father. He was a charming stranger with cutting wits but he seemed to have something wounded about him, a sadness that Irene just couldn’t seem to pierce even with her dimpled smile. They spend the night together and in the morning, he was gone. Nine months later, in 1988, a baby boy was born and later named Alex.

Irene Mackenzie raised her boy alone on tips and her waitress pay when she was only nineteen years old. Her had kicked her out when they found out she was pregnant. With what little money she had to her name, she bought a mobile home in a trailer park. When she wasn’t able to be home with Alex, she left him with her best friend Marv who had a job with the only mechanic shop in town. Marv soon became “uncle Marv” to Alex and he followed him around constantly as soon as he was old enough to walk on his own. He would toss around a football with the kid, take him and his mother to church on Sundays and was all in all the only father figure Alex ever knew. When Alex was young he never knew they were poor, he thought the mobile home was the coolest home ever (it had wheels!) and he didn’t know they were eating leftovers from the dinner most nights.

In school Alex was an average student, he was good at some things and bad at others. He particularly excelled in math, science and music class but was bad at things like reading and writing; in those he could never rise above mediocrity. He was popular amongst his peers, despite his poverty and well liked by his teachers. He had a certain potential when it came to baseball and could probably have gotten a scholarship on it, if he had pursued the interest into high school. But high school changed everything for Alex; over night everyone seemed to become aware of how poor he was and subsequently, so did he. They started treating him differently and only a few friends stuck by him through the abuse of his used-to-be friends. They made fun of his second-hand clothes, his holed shoes and said he smelled even though he showered regularly. All of this drove him to hate school, he hated the people and he hated being forced to be there. Alex started skipping school and instead going down to the mechanic shop that his uncle Marv now owned, and Marv let the sullen and broody teenager deal with his angst through working on the cars there. And Alex was never happier than he was when working on a car but when he was half way through high school, tragedy struck. Uncle Marv was killed.

It was a late Saturday night, Guns and Roses where playing on the shop radio and Marv had just finished up on a crap box of a Toyota, and lit himself a cigarette while trying to get out of Alex who he was asking to prom. Alex was trying to get him to mind his own damn business when a boy in a hoodie stepped into the shop, visibly pale and clutching something in his pocket. Marv asked him what he wanted, the boy wheezed ‘all of your money’ and drew out a small gun with a shaky hand. Alex was frozen to his spot but Marv tried to talk the boy down, and when he couldn’t, he tried to wrestle the gun away but it went off with a loud crack and the boy ran away scared as uncle Marv bleed out in his garage. Alex called nine-one-one but even with the pressure he tried to put on Marvs stomach, he was dead before the ambulance came. Alex's powers manifested on that night, his grief and anger activated cars up and down the street outside mechanic shop. He told his mom, but none else.

DURING APOCALYPSE (April 7th through April 12th, 2009)
Alex had just finished high school a year earlier, as a slightly less than mediocre student a year ago when the apocalypse happened. A lot of it seemed like ‘just something that happened to other people’ to Alex, in the beginning he was tempted to go join the x-men save the world, but his mother made him promise he would stay out of it. The news coverage was nightmare like though, and although Alex had seen death before, he had never seen death in this magnitude. Irene couldn’t handle it at all, and finally they just listened to the radio through it and left the television off. The storms on the 12’th knocked over their mobile home and destroyed almost everything they had to their name, but Alex made it out with his mother and sought refuge at the local church which was lit with candles because all of the power had gone, even battery controlled radios where off.

POST-APOCALYPSE
For awhile there, Alex and his mother were homeless, living in designated shelters for victims of the storm. In the end Irene moved in with Alex’s grandparents, but since Alex had never forgiven them for kicking his mother out when she got pregnant with him, he couldn’t live under their roof. In the end, he packed up his car and went to New York to find work and start a new life.

PURIFIERS
After Alex came to New York, he couldn’t find a job anywhere. He knew he could have sought out special organizations that help mutants get work, with his knowledge of cars he could’ve probably even gotten a job at Xaviers. But he also knew what that would mean, that would mean getting registered and from what he knew of the school and it’s students, it would be practically impossible for him to get a job there without getting involved in the mutant cause. To him it seemed that Xaviers was an all or nothing deal, you couldn’t just join half way, no strings attached. Desperate and frustrated with his situation he wound up joining a local car-theft gang consisting only of humans. The media had made him paranoid about using his abilities, so even though stealing cars with his ability would be a piece of cake, he refrained. Alex himself wasn’t touched by the Purifiers, he got his information from the news which was heavily colored by every news stations standing on whether mutants where good or bad. The only time he was actually confronted with the purifiers was during a shoot-out in downtown New York between a few mutants and a couple of purifier sympathizers, a biker gang. The Purple Skulls, Alex’s car theft gang, joined the shoot-out and started firing at the mutant kids. Red-hot anger made bile come up in Alex’s throat as car alarms down the street went off, in some sick, noisy orchestra of ear-piercing noise. Random cars started attacking the purifier sympathizers, and The Purple Skulls, broke up the fighting and scattered the attackers. Alex fled from the scene before anyone could figure out his involvement. When the enormous robot attacked New York, Alex was a part of the masses fleeing the city. He drove with his heart in his throat, as fast as he could, to get away from the giant.

SKRULLS
After the purifiers, Alex was done with The Purple Skulls. Instead he joined their rival gang, The Dirt Roses who were car thieves too, but they also did a bit of burglarizing making Alex their get-away driver. The Dirt Roses were a mixed human and mutant gang so Alex figured there wouldn’t be any problems like with the last gang.
When the complacency wave hit, turning everyone into almost will-less zombies Alex got hit too. Nothing happened to him during the time he was under the wave but he still remembers the creepy feeling of being completely complacent. When the wave-signals got destroyed and the enormous alien spaceship took over the sky, Alex went outside. He was mesmerized by the sight, but the following fight snapped him out of it and into action. Although he made sure to stay out of the x-men’s way, he did help a lot of civilians take cover and took as many injured as he could to the hospital.

CURRENT HISTORY
As for more recent events, Alex is still on the sideline looking in. He has been careful not to get involved and though the news get harder and harder to watch every day, with illuminatis killyourheroes campaign to get the public to turn on those who have saved them before and threatning the entire city. More than once Alex has considered getting the fuck out of dodge and leaving New York behind, but now he doesn’t have a choice anymore. The Dirt Roses found out his secret and suddenly it became clear to him that the few other mutants in the gang weren’t there by actual choice. The higher management of Dirt Roses was holding their secrets hostage to keep them in the gang. It’s stay with us, or we tip off the state about you. Meanwhile Namors declaration of war upon the surface world, followed by the rising of the king of Atlantis in the New York harbor on a huge seamonster had The Dirt Roses busy. They were looting houses, destroying property and in general not making the situation any better all the while running from any sign actual danger, mostly with Alex behind the wheel. Running down and running away from the parasitic creatures left by the Leviathan. Alex was spared from most of the mad-bombs, super hero, and insomnia craziness because he was hospitalized during a run in with one such of these parasitic monsters.
As the world goes crazier and crazier, Alex is starting to wonder whether his mother would still want him to keep his promise to stay out of it, if she knew it might mean his death anyway.

SAMPLE RP POST:

It was on every channel. ‘The End Is Near’, or some variation of it, read as the headline on every channel, showing footage from the war-zones, the fighting and the destruction. Some channels had brought in priests to pray for the world on live television. They were calling it the apocalypse and mutants were smack-dab in the middle of it all. One minute they were reporting that mutants were the ones attacking and the next, they were saying mutants were trying to save the world. Alex tried his mother again; the dial tone was stressing him almost as much as the fact that she wasn’t picking up. She had gone to work in the morning, like she did every morning but now it was the end of days and she wasn’t picking up her phone. When the dial tone turned to her voicemail he threw the phone against the wall, shattering it and kicking the coffee table for extra measure, it hurt his leg but he barely felt it as he resolved to just go get her, even if the news were advising not to go outside. As he was digging out his car keys, the door swung open and Irene stepped in, her hair was a mess, she had left her jacket behind and she was out of breath as if she had been running.

“Ma,” And then she was hugging him, like she hadn’t hugged him since the day Marv had died, like her life depended on it and he was everything holding her together. She smelled like the dinner and cleaning supplies, she was everything that was home to him. And she was okay. He let her cling to him for as long as she needed. “You didn’t pick up your phone” he said feebly. “I was coming to get you”

“It all went so fast, I must’ve left my coat at the dinner when I ran home,” Her hands were shaking and he grabbed them in his. They used to be smooth, he remembered his mother being young once but somehow she seemed much older now than she had this morning. Had she always had those lines around her eyes? And has she always been this tiny?

“… Civilian casualties are unaccounted for, but it’s estimated to be in the hundreds, we go now live to Herman Reese for the hourly update” Alex had almost forgotten that the television was even on in his relief that his mom was okay but now his focus shifted to the television. They are hurting my people, Alex thought. He had never felt a connection to the mutant society, he had never even met another mutant, but in that moment he couldn’t help but feel like he should be doing something, anything, to help. But what could he even do, he could start a fucking Toyota from a distance. That’s what he could do. Irene saw the emotions play across her sons face and grabbed his face with her hands, turning it away from the television.

“Don’t you dare boy.”

“Ma,”

“No, you listen to me! This is not your fight. I will not have my son run off to try to be some kind of hero!” Her pale blue eyes dug into his green ones, his hands came up to hold her arms.

“But ma, I’m one of them,”

“You are but it’s not your fault you were born this way, you shouldn’t be a soldier in a war you don’t even understand. You don’t know anything about what’s going on out there and you are MY son, and my son will not be killed for someone else’s war.” Her voice got weaker as she spoke and water welled up in her eyes, until it spilled over and tears ran down her cheeks. “You were my baby before you were one of them.” She couldn’t bring herself to actually say the word. Mutant. “Promise me Alex, promise me you won’t be a part of any of this! You find yourself a nice girl, fall in love and be happy, okay?”

“Ma-“

“Promise me!” she croaked, shaking his head.

“Alright, ma. I promise.” He could do that much for his mother. She had done everything for him, she had been alone all his life and since uncle Marv died, he was all she had left. Irene worked herself to the bone for him, he had taken her youth from her, and every penny she had ever earned had gone to him and their life together. For that, he would promise her anything in the world.

Hey Rose.

I’m going to call you Rose as I assume that’s your alias (the section for name above your IM details is meant for what we call you the player btw). First off, thanks for applying to the site the app process is always a little different from player to player, so if you get confused at any time please contact me or another member of staff.

1. Is there a reason he’s bi? We have room for all (legal) sexual preferences, but we like to see them because they’re a genuine character trait and not a gimmick so characters can flirt with whoever they want to be. This has been a problem in the past, along with people using their characters as a soapbox so we just like to make sure everyone is on the same page.

2. In terms of the powers, is he limited to cars/vehicles or isn't he? I’m getting a slightly conflicting message here to be honest.

What about his human weaknesses as well? Try not to write your weaknesses like a list either.

3. Personality - while technically there’s nothing really wrong with it, he’s a little old to be hung up by something that happened in high school and he comes across as a kind of shallow jerk in places. You say he just lets people think he’s as deep as a tea spoon, but aside from the daddy issues, he kind of is . You don’t have to change anything, but think about smarting him up. I have to say the last paragraph especially lets him down.

4. History - Kansas wasn’t attacked by Horsemen. They’d have heard about it on the radio/tv and they’d have been hit by the worldwide EMP and severe weather on the 12th. It’s fine if they run but avoid saying things like they saw things that could not be unseen, then not saying what. It just skims over the plot like it was a mild inconvenience.

Your Purifiers section is a little confusing with this gang fight that suddenly seems to have Purifiers involved. I’m not sure you understand what this plot was actually about. The Purifiers were religious fanatics who believed that mutants were impure and wanted to eradicate them. Mostly that involved firebombing and shootings.

Alexander being in a gang is fine, them getting caught up in the middle of Purifier violence is fine, but it just needs to be a little more carefully laid out. There was also the sentinel attack on the city at the very end of this plot. It’s a big strange if he didn’t at least notice 20 foot killer robots unleashed on NYC.

As for Skrulls, he would have been impacted by the complacency wave and he would have had some sort of reaction to the huge alien ships above the city and the subsequent huge fight.

As for the current history, you need to pay some kind of notice to the sitewide plot, at least the action that has gone on in NYC. Use this link for a rough idea:

http://z4.invisionfree.com/Xrevolution/ind...showtopic=13913

I know it seems like a lot of work, but you need to show a little more understanding of some of the plots. That doesn’t mean we need to see loads of paragraphs, but right now it’s just a little shrugged off. As for the gang involvement, that is also a little shrugged off like it isn’t a big deal, like he isn’t in danger or potentially going to be in a lot of shit with the law. In all that makes him read more like a teenager than someone in his mid twenties.

Also don't forget to work on the RP sample as I mentioned to you earlier.

This is not a bad app really and I am not trying to slam your efforts. We just need to see a little more understanding. If you need help just ask, otherwise post a response when you’re done with the edits. Thanks.

Hi Siryn
My name is Malene, I had just missed the fact that the topper part was only player information, it has been corrected accordingly.

The reason that Alex is bisexual is that he was made this way five years ago when I first had him on another page. You could say that he was "born this way" and it's just a trait that hasn't left him on any of the other pages I've had him on since. I can understand why you ask, but the problem is that my only answer would be "he is because he is". Alex is such an old character that, like a person, he tends to change less and less over time - he develops more good and bad character traits yes, but the ones that stick with him (like the fact that he can be an ass) are the ones that make him HIM to me. If you sincerely believe that this would be a problem, I will put him more firmly on either side of the fence, but I honestly wouldn't know whether to make him gay or straight. I've had a lot of awesome plots with either side and I don't currently know which side he would prefer to be on.

I've corrected the bits I, at a second look, could see be conflicting but I'm not sure I caught all of them. If there are anymore specific bits that are confusing, please let me know.
The weakness part has been completely rewritten to not be so list-y and I've added the fact that he's not super-human body-wise, I'm hoping that's what you meant. If not, please elaborate.

This one left me a bit conflicted. I usually like to keep Alex a bit shallow in the beginning of a new rp that I'm in and then make the waters deeper as I go with him, but I got what you meant about him being 25 years old now and I've added in a bit more and deleted a few sections. As for his smarts, while Alex is not really meant to be the sharpest tool in the shed (he's mostly just a tool xD), but I took out the final paragraph because I didn't mean to make him seem downright dim.

4. History

I've revised most of the history now, from the apocalypse and up. If there are more conflicting bits or too site-plot less sections, let me know - I've still chosen to keep him aware but out of most of it though, I mean to join the plot with him after approval but would prefer it if I could still keep him a little oblivious to what's been going on, because he's not exactly been in the loop

Also don't forget to work on the RP sample as I mentioned to you earlier.

It's been redone, hopefully better now. You gave me the note to let you see more of his personality in the sample, so I chose a moment he had with his mom - I hope it shows as much of his character to you as it does to me :)

As for a final note, don't worry about giving me notes for an app, I'll mope around for a few hours after being given constructive criticism but I always come around to see it as just that; constructive. I hope I have redone it to your satisfaction and enjoyment, after posting this I'm going edit one thing I forgot to do, but after that I won't touch it again until I've heard from someone.

Cheers!

You still have some rough patches here and there in your history/personality but most of it is better now and a lot of things you're going to have to learn in game. Especially about crime/behaviour etc.

However, its the powers I just want clarification on. You need to be way more specific about things that aren't cars as it sounds like he could talk to say, a microwave etc, when it was convenient to the plot. With computers etc, what if someone DOES break into one. Then what?

I know you say he has no luck for most of the time, but it's the rest of the time I want to know about to be absolutely sure that nothing random is going to spring in at any time.

If it makes it easier, you can detail this sort of thing as an underdeveloped aspect of his power that you can potentially access later in game after training/development or simplify it by just cutting it down to cars/other vehicles OR consider instead of referencing microwaves/phones etc, different categories of vehicles, like bikes, trucks, HGVs etc.

It sounds fiddly, but we have had a LOT of technopaths come and go and stay as well, so we need to be careful making sure you're going to be unique yet also useful.

I have removed appliances from his abilities, since it isn't really relevant to his story. Instead I've cooked Alex's abilities down to transportation devices, added in a few more pesky weaknesses that come with that, and clarified a bit on what transportation devices. I hope it's clearer now.

That's better. As I said before, you have some bumps that will iron out better in game. So far he might have gotten away with things, but don't expect that in play.

For reference in regards to one small section though, keep in mind Xaviers the school was not public until after it had been destroyed in the Purifiers plot so while he'd know about the X-men, he would not know about the school.

Other than that bear in mind that another mod might ask you to change more.

So long as (like Lauren said! <3) you understand there will be in game/in character repercussions for criminal activity, I'm good on this. If you need help getting started in game, feel free to drop me a line! I play a member of XFI, which would likely be the easiest faction to get some interaction with outside of Others.

Other than that, Welcome!
